The new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy is all about giving students across NSW a taste for healthy foods and to make healthy choices easily available.

All NSW public schools are required to transition to the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy over a three-year period (2017-2019) and non-government schools are strongly encouraged to participate. The Food and Drink Benchmark underpins the Strategy and provides an outline for a healthy school canteen. It applies to all food and drink provided in NSW school canteens and vending machines.

What’s changed?

• Two categories (Everyday and Occasional food and drinks) will replace the three traffic light categories.

• There will no longer be two ‘Red’ food days per term. However, at the discretion of the principal, a school may choose to invite the canteen to cater for a special event, such as a school fair, or school celebration.

*Sugary drinks are not to be sold in NSW public school

A range of practical resources has been developed to support schools to implement the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy and Food and Drink Benchmark.

Healthy Kids Food Exhibition & Training Day 2017 The Healthy Kids Association is proud to host its Food Exhibition and Training Day on 1 August 2017, 9:30am to 2:00pm at Qudos Bank Arena, Homebush.

This event gives the food industry the opportunity to showcase products to canteen managers, staff and volunteers. All products at the expo must fit within the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. As well as a food exhibition hall, Healthy Kids will host seminars, workshops and cooking demonstrations to help advise canteens on operational issues, as well as give advice on serving and preparing healthy, nutritious food.

Healthy Kids members receive two free tickets to this year’s expo (call us to check if you’re a member on 02 9876 1300). Non-members can purchase tickets online for $35

The Primary Schools PDHPE (personal development, health and physical education) Network is a professional development opportunity available to all primary school teachers from schools in Sydney Local Health District.

The network aims to improve the confidence of teachers to deliver quality PDHPE lessons, raise the profile of PDHPE as a key learning area, and provide the opportunity for teachers within the region to network and exchange ideas.

The format of the network meetings is practical and provides an opportunity for teachers to learn and practise quality games and learn skills that they can confidentially replicate in their school environment. The theme of our last meeting was Gymnastics with Limited Equipment run by Michelle Olson. Michelle Olson is a former national team member of the Australian Institute of Sport and runs the PLC Sydney Gymnastics Program. Teachers who joined us at the meeting a lot of fun and also picked up many new tips and skills.

The topic for our next meeting will be on Cricket Skills. Details will be coming soon.

Eat It To Beat It is a program developed by the Cancer Council aimed at encouraging parents of primary school-aged children to eat more vegetables and fruit.

Parents are encouraged to join the program, as a healthy family diet during these important years can have a big influence on their child’s future health and wellbeing.

The program offers free sessions and workshops for parents, providing ideas and inspiration to get the whole family eating more fruit and vegetables. A lifetime of eating adequate fruit and vegetables every day can help protect against some forms of cancer, overweight and obesity, heart disease and constipation.

The Eat It To Beat It website is a great online resource providing simple, healthy recipes, meal planners and behaviour reward charts.
