Cool of the Day
Welcome Letter
Dear Friend—
Thank you for reading this. And before you go very far, I want to be clear about something
important. This started out and remains a ministry plan. The first objective of this plan is to
facilitate a large number of people becoming excited about Jesus Christ, and having their
relationship with Christ deepened and solidified if they already know him. The fact that this
is a business is critically important, but it grows out of the first objective, which is exposing
people to Christ and helping them know him more completely.
As I have planned this enterprise over the years, and as God has shaped my experience and
desires toward the accomplishment of this plan, I have come to the conclusion that a for-
profit business structure is the most conducive to carrying out the ministry objectives God
has in mind. This is because the plan in its execution will create a viable brand with unique
and valuable products that will be widely appreciated by the spiritually-seeking public and
by ministry professionals. There is a demonstrable and viable revenue stream that will be
created by this ministry that will allow it to be self-sustaining and will position it for growth
immediately, so that it need not rely on charitable donations for its start-up or long term
viability. Its price points are low and its value proposition compelling to people seeking low-
cost entertainment and inspiration in these recessed economic times. The revenue and
expense plan for this ministry is justifiable and allows for it to be profitable at an early stage.
The “for-profit” business structure will allow us the greatest flexibility in decision-making
and responding to the needs of the public who will be ministered to. Being a business puts
us in the same category as many Christian publishers, broadcasters and media producers
who have entered the commercial arena to accomplish ministry objectives, but who are
creating products with economic viability and who therefore seek the independence and
flexibility that a for-profit structure affords.
With that said, it has long been my feeling that whoever joins us as a financing partner
should possess the qualities and motivations of a true partner in ministry with us. It is my
firm belief, as I have tried to demonstrate herein, that we can provide a compelling rate of
financial return for our partners, and from a fiscal point of view, it will be the number one
priority of this business to see that funds entrusted to Cool of the Day are treated as
precious resources--that they be nurtured to grow and produce.

Cool of the Day
Welcome Letter(cont., p.2)
At the same time, it is my belief that the accomplishment of our ministry objectives, which
would mean blessing and encouraging many people and the inclusion of many more lives in
the kingdom of God, will bring an added and priceless dimension of satisfaction to our
financial partners, so that the combination of financial and spiritual reward can become a
source of deep fulfillment for all involved.
Please know that any funds extended towards this business will be treated as if given to the
Lord, with a deep respect for the sacrifice and trust that those capital resources represent.
Every aspect of this business will be nurtured to realize maximum effect from our
expenditures, and you will never be out of our thoughts in the consideration for how our
finances are to be utilized. It is my desire that the Lord should say to all of us, when this
venture is accomplished, “Well done, for how you invested the resources that were
entrusted to you,” and it is equally my desire that you should feel inclined to say the same
to me whenever we report back to you with repayments.
My commitment to you is complete transparency and accountability with the funds we
utilize, and that expenditures will never be significantly re-directed from the plans contained
herein without an open and timely communication to you about our progress, our decisions,
and our rationale for any such decisions. I invite you to join us in what I expect to be a
deeply rewarding and Christ-honoring venture for us all. To God be the glory for the things
He will do. And may you feel deeply glad for having decided to be a part of it.
Sincerely,
Kevin Cushing

Cool of the Day
Our Name
“Cool of the Day” is a phrase taken from the Bible, in the third chapter of Genesis, where it
says that God was walking in the garden of Eden “in the cool of the day.” It stirs up images
of intimacy and access, of approachability to God. It suggests that before the fall of man,
God could be easily found and directly conversed with, surrounded by the beauty of the
garden He had created for man to occupy.
Today, God still makes himself available for refreshing interactions every day, though our
challenge is to look past the many distractions that compete for our attention, the things
that tempt us not to listen for God’s voice.
The promise of the Cool of the Day organization is that we create programming and
resources that invite people who are seeking God to find him within settings that are
relevant, memorable and refreshing.
We try to open up space in people’s lives, creating appointment-worthy radio, audio
resources and public events, where they can have dynamic interactions with God. This will
be mostly accomplished through an innovative daily radio program, “Cool of the Day,”
broadcast five times a week on Christian radio stations. It is carried forward in our audio
and printed resources that spin off from the program, and will be ultimately realized in a
three-times-yearly public festival event that will be held in different regions around the
country.
We also seek to conduct our business in a manner consistent with our mission. We want to
drink from the same fountain that we are offering to the public, to be daily invigorated by
God’s presence and let that refreshment flow towards our audience, our vendors, our
employees, and our financing partners.

Cool of the Day
Demolishing Strongholds
In the gospel of John chapter four, Jesus predicted that a time was coming when God would
have followers who worshipped Him “in spirit and truth.” This suggested a new type of
worship was coming—one that engaged the whole person—their intellect as well as their will
and emotions. Cool of the Day exists to facilitate that kind of complete and satisfying
experience of God’s presence.
We’ve coined a phrase for what we do—”the emotional apologetic.” We create
programming that addresses people’s intellectual needs to understand God better, as well
their desire to have their emotions and humor touched and addressed. We employ the latest
music and cutting edge comedy to penetrate the heart emotionally even as we’re delivering
a content-filled message. We’re striving simultaneously for artistic validity, cultural
relevance and mind-changing content. We feel it is at the meeting of the mind and
emotions that the Holy Spirit is invited by individuals to do its most effective work.
From a mission perspective, we seek no less than the “tearing down of strongholds” that
hold themselves up in opposition to God. These strongholds exist in most of our lives, in the
form of mistaken beliefs about God, resistance to God’s entreaties, a sense of defeat,
failure, perhaps anger in relation to God. A lack of knowing who God is in His entirety.
These are all battlegrounds where Cool of the Day will engage, not with fierce or brow-
beating tactics, but with the cool refreshment of truth told artfully, humorously and
beautifully. We write and perform, not with superior wisdom, but with a demonstration of
the Spirit’s power. Our comedy is written and inspired from the point of view of Colossians
2:15, where it says that Jesus disarmed the “powers and authorities, making a public
spectacle of them.” Our intention, by making people laugh in our program, is to expose
various tactics of the enemy that are at work in the world today and to hold those tactics up
to scorn, disarming them of their power.
At the end of the day, we keep in mind that there is nothing particularly special about us to
deliver this package, but there is unending power in God’s ability to use us. We answer His
call and bring into play amazing tools and people that he has put at our disposal—and that
includes you, our financing partner. This is a mission that will change lives and yield
kingdom-sized results. There is no work more urgent, no result more rewarding. We look
forward to the partnership of like-minded servants of God.

Cool of the Day
The Show
Cool of the Day will deliver a 15-minute daily radio program (five days a week) to Christian
radio, recorded in front of a live audience in Southern California, utilizing a house rock band,
a core team of comic actors, quality musical guests, and significant readings from Scripture.
Imagine the warmth and familiarity of “A Prairie Home Companion,” but with the musical
and comedy edge of “Saturday Night Live,” then seasoned with deep Biblical messages.
(Although the program is just 15-minutes a day, we will record four programs in one session
in front of a weekly audience, and each 15-minute program will contain the elements of
comedy, live music, devotional material and Scripture.)
But let’s back up. Did we say, “significant readings from Scripture?”
How does that fit in with comedy, rock music, and a fun atmosphere, you may be thinking.
Our answer--it will fit seamlessly, when we execute the show according to the vision God
has for us. Cool of the Day will turn on a dime from provoking laughter to touching
emotions, from outrageous to serious, from tearing down pretensions to building faith.
In fact, we mean to read through the entire New Testament every four years on the show!
(approximately 15 verses per day.) What is more, the public reading of Scripture will be a
common theme woven through both the festival events we will produce as well as the radio
show of Cool of the Day. We believe when people are exposed to God’s unfiltered word,
delivered in beautiful and entertaining settings, their hearts will be opened to a fresh
experience of God’s voice speaking to them.
Cool of the Day is a new type of Christian entertainment. A hybrid of a cutting-edge rock-
based comedy show with the heart of a ministry vehicle. People who attend the show live or
listen on the radio will find themselves alternately propelled with laughter, swept away by
intimate musical performances, and moved and awed by a fresh presentation of the
Scripture, that will be thematically woven through the entire show. It will become a daily
“must listen” for those who are seeking original entertainment with a Christian perspective,
or who simply want to hear from God in a fresh relevant format that is not available
anywhere else. For Christian ministry professionals and worship leaders, it will become a
major

The Show(cont., p.2)
supplier of original worship drama and worship concepts that they may utilize in their own
congregations. It will break new musical artists to the public, and introduce future hit songs
to Christian radio. Cool of the Day will become a national phenomenon, and it will
eventually play on hundreds of Christian broadcast radio stations (of which there are over
2000 in North America). It may even play well as a weekend package on many secular
stations in the Bible belt, because of its fresh use of sketch comedy and the latest music.
People tuning in for their weekly dose of Cool of the Day will experience something akin to
the joy God wants his people to feel when they gather in community and celebrate His
presence even while they struggle with real issues throughout their week. Cool of the Day
will be something unique in Christian radio. A show that embraces real issues, real life pain
and dilemmas that people are experiencing, but it will explore them with a passionate sense
of humor and a continuing focus on the perspective of God’s word.
We expect those tuning in to feel that they have truly heard from God each day, in what will
become the most unique daily devotional on the market. We want listeners to feel that God
has spoken to their individual circumstance and that within the community of God’s people,
they have found a place of delight, of refuge and celebration--a place found only in “the cool
of the day.”
Cool of the Day will become a national brand, representing the finest in innovative and
entertaining Christian devotional content.
Throughout the year Cool of the Day will also offer live, festival-type events that
encourage people to experience the presence of God in a public setting through innovative
presentations of Scripture reading and music, set among multiple venues within a particular
city or region. Because of the uniqueness of both types of programming, they will support
each other in gaining publicity and brand awareness.

Cool of the Day
Kevin Cushing
Having a pastor for a dad and a radio talk show host for a mom, Kevin grew up comfortable
in front of audiences—and with a passion to convey God’s truth in fresh and relevant ways.
By the time Kevin reached college, he had already appeared in dozens of plays, including
numerous productions of Shakespeare. His versatility in adopting widely different
characters and voices had already established him as a sought-after character actor and
lead.
By the age of 21 he had written, directed or produced numerous original productions for a
church of 2000 members, as well as for a local high school. By 23, he wrote, directed and
produced the award-winning Christian film “Heavensent” which was nationally distributed by
Gospel Films, and which garnered three “Christian Oscars” including Best Children’s Film.
His documentary “Conceived In Liberty,” a $500,000 production that he produced and
directed at age 24, was aired nationally in primetime on PBS.
In his late 20’s Kevin worked as a licensing administrator for famed Hanna-Barbera
Productions, during which time he secured numerous professional acting and voice-over
roles, including nationally aired commercials and announcing jobs. He even once filled in as
the voice of Boo Boo in a Yogi Bear cartoon!
Kevin went on to be a Director of Development at Paramount Pictures, developing television
and feature film scripts for a star actor under contract to Paramount. Later he worked in
both operations and development for Matinee Entertainment, a children’s entertainment
company owned by Malaysian media giant Astro Entertainment. During his time at Matinee
Kevin briefly headed up game show development, and produced two half-hour television
pilots in Kuala Lumpur for shows his team developed.
During Kevin’s time in the entertainment industry, he remained heavily involved in teaching
and developing original worship concepts for his 2500-member church in Orange County,
CA. He helped launch an original contemporary service for the church, and contributed
much sketch material, comedic and dramatic, to multiple services for this innovative church.

Kevin Cushing(cont., p.2)
Having spent much of his career on the creative side of management, Kevin went on to pure
operations management for a leading media asset management company, Preferred Media
in Burbank, CA, serving clients such as Paramount, 20th Century Fox, HBO, E-TV, CBS and
others. In this capacity, Kevin aligned the operational procedures between the company’s
Los Angeles, Chicago and New York divisions, writing a unified operations manual for the
company.
For the last five years he has headed up the Southern California operations for Corporate
Express Business Interiors, the largest contract furniture dealer in North America, and now a
subsidiary of Staples. Kevin held GM responsibility and P&L accountability for a $30 million
division within an $8 billion company, prior to the Staples acquisition. Kevin refers to this
last five years of his career as “like earning a practical M.BA.,” adding rigorous management
experience in a multinational corporation to his skills as a producer and performer of
entertainment.
Kevin is known as a skilled manager of people—able to establish processes and clear goals
and lead a team to the accomplishment of measurable objectives. Kevin is adept with
managing a P&L profitably, and yet retains his ability to create distinctive entertainment
tinged with deep ministry messages. Recently Kevin was recruited to be General Manager
of Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, completing five interviews around the
country with Feld Entertainment before concluding that the intense travel would not suit his
family.
However the desire to lead a creative and diverse team in the execution of a live
entertainment enterprise, (and in the case of Cool of the Day, one containing the
opportunity to lead people closer to Jesus Christ) is a mission that Kevin is driven and
qualified to fulfill.

Cool of the Day
Radio Syndication
There are over 2000 Christian radio stations in North America. A great majority of these
stations accept programs, sometimes the majority of their programming, on a fee-for-time
basis from Christian ministries. Some of the stations are non-profit and some are
commercial stations selling ad time in addition to accepting fees for ministry programming.
Many of the commercial Christian stations are music-formatted, with local or syndicated
deejays. Many Christian stations (both commercials and non-profit) are talk-formatted, and
carry a combination of local and syndicated ministry programming.
Most of the popular Christian talk programs (such as Focus on the Family, the Bible Answer
Man, Truth for Life, Turning Point) appear on your local station due to fees that they pay the
station or its parent company in exchange for air time. These ministries in turn support
themselves by offering resources to listeners in the form of books, pamphlets or CDs, and/or
by soliciting donations directly. If enough listeners feel benefited by the programming being
offered, then they support the program through direct contributions, or through responding
to offers to purchase resources that the ministry produces. Or the listener may make a
contribution and receive a resource as a thank you.
The plan for the Cool of the Day weekday broadcast is to include an offer at the conclusion
of each of our 15-minute programs, directing listeners to our website, and focusing their
attention on a variety of resources offered there. It is our plan to produce many compelling
audio and printed materials from the substance of our recorded devotional entertainment
program, and our expectation is to receive on-line orders of these products sufficient to
cover both the cost of radio airtime as well as the overhead of producing the shows and
conducting other ministry activities. In the section that follows this we describe the range of
product that will be offered through our website (www.cooloftheday.org) and highlighted on
our program. Our revenue projections are realistically conservative, estimating that only 1
in 400 listeners will regularly purchase resources. A big part of our strategy is to create
loyal subscribers who purchase not just a single resource (although CDs and books are
available for individual purchase), but who will subscribe to ongoing resources as they are
produced monthly or quarterly. Following are some figures giving examples of air time
costs and expected revenues for an average time period in a sample month.

Scripture Tour
Five years ago, my family and I were traveling in Italy, and were moved by the gorgeous and
massive cathedrals we saw at Pisa and Florence. As we moved through these heavily
visited tourist attractions, I thought of the faith of the anonymous people who had built them
and I wondered how often true worship was still taking place within their magnificent walls.
I saw the impressive podiums, like small buildings in themselves, from which the priests
would read the Word of the Lord, and I wondered how often God’s word was still proclaimed
from their heights. One night during that trip, as I lay awake still not having adjusted to the
time change, I felt an assurance from God that someday, I would be involved in reading
Scripture in large public settings—that I would facilitate an experience whereby Scripture in
its purest form would be disseminated meaningfully to live audiences in beautiful ways.
Making Scripture meaningful and personal and important to people had become a passion in
my life. I had started off as an actor at an early age—doing Shakespeare—learning how to
take texts that were powerful but not necessarily accessible to the average listener and
making them entertaining and relevant by virtue of their delivery and staging. In recent
years I had become fascinated with the verbal reading of Scripture, and I noticed that while
many audio versions of Scripture had been recorded by talented actors, many with gorgeous
speaking voices, most actors diminished their performance by treating the words with too
much reverence and not entering into the life of the text. The result was a performance in
which it is easy to be lulled by the beauty of the voice but to miss the life-changing and
personal relevance of the message that was being read. In my development as an actor in
my 20’s I had taken training that had helped me get me away from the posturing,
presentational delivery of a stage actor and freed me to give performances that were
natural, conversational, and didn’t feel like you were reading from a prepared text.
In my public Scripture reading, my approach has become to enter into a personal interaction
with the text and to let it carry me naturally into its meaning—it’s thoughts, emotions and
convictions. If I can read Scripture and cause people to not hear “words on a page,” but
living, active thoughts inspired by the mind of God and relevant to us all now, then I
accomplish what I set out to do. In a sense now, when I read Scripture in public, I try not to
read the Bible so much as to let it “read me,” and let it carry me where it will. Additionally, I
have discovered the power of teaming with talented musicians to draw out the text in a sort
of improvised duet that further showcases the text and its meaning.

Cool of the Day
Scripture Tour(cont., p.2)
All of this eventually evolved into a concept whereby I imagined that the New Testament
could be read to an entire community over a span of three weeks, or 22 nights, with
talented musicians, featured songs, beautiful graphics and an inspiring setting, imbuing the
event with meaning and a sense of the presence of God.
Originally I thought the vision of the event would end there, but as I considered how to make
it further appealing to every possible attendee, I knew that I wanted to create an
atmosphere where people could feel free to get up, leave, and re-enter to make the event
more free-form. Out of that notion evolved the idea of making this New Testament reading
more like a festival event, where the main room would house the Bible reading
performance, but where people were able to explore other forms of testimony about Jesus
Christ simultaneously. The idea was to create numerous experiences that could be taken in
on the night at the venue, so that people could take in portions of the Scripture reading, but
also exit to see a Christian comedy sketch in another room, to hear difficult questions being
discussed by an apologetics expert in a different room, to hear a personal testimony of
people from all walks of life about what Christ has done in their life in yet another room, to
hear a set of music, to grab a bite to eat, and to go to a prayer room where they could
personally speak to God either by themselves or with the help of a counselor.
In arriving at this concept, it solved for me many of the questions I had had about the
effectiveness of the event. People could be attracted by the novelty of hearing the entire
New Testament read by one person traveling throughout a region in 3 weeks, but they
wouldn’t have to stay for all or even a large portion of it to have a really rich experience in a
variety of ways. This festival, multi-venue format also answered the concerns I had about
how to give people opportunities for prayer and to make decisions for Christ. Rather than
having a traditional altar call, people would be made aware through multiple
announcements and signage that they are free to pray and be prayed with at any point
during the evening. They may listen to 15-20 minutes of Scripture, see a 10-minute drama,
hear a 10-minute testimony, hear 15 minutes of an apologetics lecture, and it allows God
the setting to shape each user’s experience to be what He wants to reach that person’s
need in their individual circumstance.

Scripture Tour(cont., p.3)
I believe that the power of this approach will be thrilling to explore, and it may provide a
new template for large evangelistic events. These will be the first crusades with no
preaching—just God’s word, beautifully presented, with music, drama, testimony and a
spotlight on apologetics.
I chose a 22-day format because it allows us to begin and end on the same day of the week,
such as on Sunday nights, and it gives us the ability to read the entire New Testament in
about 90 minutes a night, with multiple musical breaks.
Also, the concept is to choose a city or geographic region and move progressively through
many tour sites within that region, operating for one to three nights in each of several
different places, drawing out the diversity represented in each city site. If for example, Los
Angeles is our first tour event, we could visit churches within West LA, South-Central LA,
East LA and the San Fernando Valley. Ideally each venue would have a major church
sponsoring and providing volunteers. The requirement is that each church be evangelical in
orientation, but there would be a wonderful opportunity for interdenominational cooperation.
Also, as these Scripture tours grow in their execution, and as budget permits, we will
attempt to place them in beautiful public settings—museum squares, parks, concert halls,
rather than in church buildings, and so to maximize their public accessibility.

Opportunity Summary
As indicated in the opening letter, this plan has been formulated with the expectation that
this venture will take the structure of a traditional business. With that in mind, the intention
would be to create an L.L.C. upon the first receipt of investment funds and to raise an initial
sum of $300-350k from one or more investors, and to equate that total amount raised with
35% of the value of the company.
There are other structures which would also be possible. If the founding investor wished to
support this as a non-profit ministry, we would be very much open to creating a non-profit
corporation and inviting significant donors to take seats on the board. (We have identified
one of the leading non-profit attorneys for Christian ministries in Southern California to be
retained if such a structure is desired.) It would even be possible to incorporate as a non-
profit and then to fund the start-up in the form of flexible debt financing from its donors, in
which the contributor could expect to receive a stated rate of return for their funds over
time. In such a scenario there might be an initial period in which interest accrues but no
repayments are made, followed by a period of interest-only payments, followed by
payments of principal and interest on an amortized schedule. If such a format was desired it
would be possible to have such a loan administered by a 3rd party who handles all collection
activity and returns payments directly to the lenders’ accounts.
In summary, there are a number of ways that an interested party could fund this ministry
venture. We are open to the direction and inclination of our founding partners and we look
forward to working with you to bring life to this exciting vision for Cool of the Day.
To summarize the goals of this start-up:
--To produce what will become, over 2-5 years, the most listened-to program on
Christian radio. A program that is both broadly entertaining and that ministers to
people daily in personal and culturally relevant ways.
--To produce a new paradigm for live event evangelism. One that places God’s
word in a showcase and that re-establishes the Bible as central and relevant to
providing the answers that people seek.

What We Believe
We believe in God as revealed in Holy Scripture;
He is Father over everything, all powerful, all knowing and eternal.
He made the earth, the universe and everything within it.
We believe in Jesus Christ, that He was in very nature God, that He is God’s only begotten
Son, the agent through whom the physical universe was created, and He is our Savior.
He was conceived in the virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit,
He lived a sinless life, blessing and healing many people, but was mocked and abused by
the powers of his day.
He was crucified, died and was buried, and after three days rose bodily from the grave.
He ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father, and he will return
to earth some day to render justice to both the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the third member of the triune Godhead,
We believe in the church universal, that it is Christ’s body active in the world today. We
believe that all people claiming salvation through Jesus Christ are united in a common
fellowship.
We believe that all people can and should seek the forgiveness of sins that has been made
available by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, and we believe that all who have received
Christ’s forgiveness will experience a bodily resurrection and receive eternal life in the
presence of God.
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament were written with the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit and are without error. These Scriptures are completely reliable
in all matters of which they speak.
