What does this mean to us:

All of our production sites are ISO 9001 and BRC/IoP grade A certified.

Every individual component within the base film (monomers, catalysts, slip modifiers, anti-oxidants, print coatings, etc) and every component in the heat seal coating (monomers, slip additives, antifog, antiblock, adhesion modifiers, etc) has to be fully compliant with EU food contact legislation and tested to conditions laid out in the Plastic Implementation Measure Regulation (EC) 10/2011.

All Packaging films are externally tested at independent accredited labs to extreme worst case conditions:

OML testing

• Simulant A (hydrophilic foods), 4 hours at reflux • Simulant B (acidic foods), 4 hours at reflux• Simulant D2 (fatty foods), 2 hours at 175°C

SML testing

• is carried out as appropriate in relevant simulant

Additionally we have tested for 2 hours at 220°C in simulant E based on customer requests.

The films we have recommended for use in conventional ovens are fully compliant with the tests covering 2 hours cooking at temperatures above 175°C.

Mylar® retains most of its mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures and is suitable for use in frozen applications. The melting point of Mylar® is 255°C but we would not recommend the use of any of our films at oven temperatures above 220°C. The majority of the Mylar® 850 and OL range of products have been tested and approved for use at high temperature but please refer to the product specific food contact statement for any specific temperature, time and product restrictions.

Testing and compliance

Safety is one of our core values and is at the heart of everything we do.All of our packaging films comply with the Food Contact Framework Regulation (EC) 1935:2004, which stipulates they must not:

Cooking with Mylar®

• Endanger human health• Bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food• Bring about deterioration in the organoleptic (taste) characteristics of the food

Ovenable Films for pre-made bags and pouches

Pre-made bags and pouches were one of the earliest uses of Mylar® polyester films for oven cooking and are still widely used today.

Cooking with Mylar®

Packing in pre-made bags delivers an efficient way to pack product in store, and also a low cost way to test the concept of Cooking with Mylar® without the need for significant capital investment.

Mylar® 852 has unique slip characteristics for trouble-free bag manufacture, ease of opening and product loading.

Pouches are easily heat sealed with a broad seal window from 140 – 200°C, and Mylar® will run on most standard vacuum bag equipment.

Extended shelf life for fresh protein can be achieved by incorporating the Mylar® CB range of products into the final structure.

Cooking with Mylar®

Traditional skin pack films are polyolefin based andare not suitable for use in high temperature applications, but based on proprietary technology DuPont TeijinFilms have developed a film which combines thehigh temperature properties of polyester with“skin-like” behaviour.

Mylar® SKIN has a draw ratio of 3:1 which is suitable for most packs, but less than traditional non ovenable skin films. For more information on draw ratios and for advice on tray design and machinery compatability please contact your DuPont Teijin Films representative.
