Pictured: Paul Wilson would like see an organised graffi ti clean-up take place in Mount Cook.
By Nikki PapatsoumasThe popular Keep Newtown Clean day may
soon spread into Mount Cook, if they can fi nd the manpower they need to get it off the ground.
Mount Cook resident Paul Wilson says he believes graffi ti is an on-going issue in the community, and he would like to do his bit to help out.
He says when he moved to Mount Cook two years ago, the amount of tagging and graffi ti was terrible.

Cook Strait News is very pleased to announce that we have offi cially opened the doors to our new offi ce in Kilbirnie.
Our new offi ce is based in Kilbirnie Plaza and we invite the public to call in with their news stories and tips.
This is the fi rst time The Cook Strait News has been in the heart of the com-munity since 1994, and at this time the paper was published by APN, Capital Community Newspapers.
The paper has been based in Johnsonville and Petone over the last two decades.
Publisher Les Whiteside, who took ownership of the Cook Strait News last April with his wife Katrina says he has chosen to open an office in Kilbirnie to be closer to the community.
“We have been actively looking for more than six months,” he says.
“I believe by having an office based in the Kil-
Cook Strait newspaper opens local offi ce

moved here, but the council and contractors have started to do a great job and it has notably improved.”
Paul says after taking place in the successful Keep Newtown Clean programme he got in touch with organisers to see if they could look at extending it into Mount Cook.
Keep Newtown Clean takes place on the fi rst Saturday of every month, and sees mem-bers of the community come together to clean up graffi ti and tagging in the area.
Paul says it would make sense to join up with the current programme in Newtown, be-ing a neighbouring suburb, and because it would allow them to make use of their database which keeps track of tagging and paint colours.
Keep Newtown Clean or-ganiser David Wilcox says he was happy to help when Paul got in touch.
He says people from all around Wellington have re-alised how successful the Newtown model is and are looking to roll it out into their own suburbs.
“ W e a r e a l l
Wellingtonians and it’s about helping each other to keep Wellington clean.”
“The model we use is right, it’s working and it is not just achieving cleaning up the streets, it’s empowering the community to be able to achieve things they usually wouldn’t be able to do.”
With the green light from Newtown organisers and free paint supplied from Resene, a monthly clean up in Mount Cook is good to go.
Paul is now looking for locals that want to jump on board.
“We are all set to extend it into Mount Cook, we just need to get some residents from the area to volunteer their time.”
If you are keen to volun-teer, email Paul at [email protected]

A local man will celebrate his 77th birthday with the opening of an exhibition which will display his life’s work.
Hataitai resident Peter Coates’ exhibition, A Retrospective in Paint and Film, will showcase a small fragment of the large amount of paintings and fi lms he has produced over his successful career.
Coates has lived in the same house in Hataitai his whole life, and the self-proclaimed “genuine Wellingtonian” is well known to many as a successful TVNZ arts producer.
In his life he has produced 350 documentaries covering a vari-ety of topics from all around the world, and 35 of these fi lms will be shown as part of the exhibition.
As well as this, a collection of around 50 of his large oil paint-ings will also be on display, which Coates says have been inspired by his life.
“I am an expressionist because my intention is to express feelings not photographic representa-tions,” he says.
“It is an opportunity for other people to come and explore their imagination as well.”
While working an arts producer for TVNZ Coates had the op-portunity to visit many countries including Russia, Tokyo, London, Fiji, Hong Kong, Burma and America.
He says his art and documenta-ries are a response to the experi-ences in his life.
“My art is the response to my environment which includes Wellington.
“It refl ects my life, the experi-
ence of my life, my family, and the visually inspiring things I have seen.”
His exhibition will be running at the All Saints Church in Hataitai, in both the newly completed hall and the church.
Coates says he chose to hold his exhibition here because he would like to see the church become a cultural centre in the community which will help to expose the creativity of the area.
“The new hall and enthusiasm from people about the new hall has allowed me opportunity to play with this idea.
“It will bring a lot of people here that wouldn’t normally go into a church.”
The exhibition will run at the All Saints Church from today until March 23, from 10am to 4pm daily.
Each night a different documen-tary will screen in the church.

The Cook Strait News cel-ebrated the achievement of one of their own last week.
21-year-old Emily Elliott, who works at Wellington Suburban Newspapers in the production department, was awarded with the Massey University Pro Chancel-lors Prize for Feature Writing and Free lancing.
This comes after she submitted
a feature article about a Victoria university student who is in the process of developing a toy for children with autism.
“It stuck out to me because she’s not only a designer, but a university student who is really putting her front foot forward, and is going out there to do something new and challenging.”
The Newtown local says the award came as a complete shock.
“I was very, very surprised. I
was not expecting it at all. I just submitted the article as I would with any other assignment, not expecting anything back but a grade.”
Emily is in her final year at Massey University, where she is studying a Bachelor of Com-munications and Design.
She hopes to one day be the editor of a magazine.
Congratulations, Emily!

Bus Rapid Transit through central Wel-lington is the best solution for a high quality public transport spine through central Wel-lington, the Regional Transport Committee decided on Tuesday.
The spine will run on a dedicated corridor along the Golden Mile, Kent and Cambridge Terraces, then around the Basin Reserve, along Adelaide Road to Wellington Hospital.
A joint Wellington City and Regional Council and NZTA project team will work over the next year or two on the detailed planning and design of the Spine.

The Wellington Curtain Bank spent last week preparing for their upcoming season with a working bee.
In preparation for their upcom-ing season, which will begin on April 1, Curtain Bank staff, volunteers and members from ANZ engaged in a working bee last Wednesday.
Together they sorted through 400 pairs of curtains, taking measurements so they could then be sorted into piles, ready to be distributed to their new homes.
The Wellington Curtain Bank provides low-income families in need with pre-loved curtains which are donated from mem-bers of the community.
Community projects man-ager for the Sustainability Trust, Christina Bellis, says that since opening in 2010, the Curtain Bank has seen 600 per cent growth in client numbers.
She says last year alone they provided 1500 curtains to 500 families across the Wellington region.
Curtains prepped for busy season ahead
inbriefnewsSports festival for children
Children’s garden under way
Christina says utilising the Curtain Bank is very easy, and clients even have the op-portunity to come in and choose the curtains they want from the banks wide range.
“Clients can come in and pick what they want. They can pick ones that go with their décor, or things they like.”
Christina says as well as pre-paring to distribute curtains to families across Wellington, they are also looking for more donations.
She says they are always happy to take good quality curtains to pass on, they are even able to replace the lining if need be.
“We always need more cur-
tains. The same amount that is coming in is going out.
“It is great to see the service being used and to know that things are warmer and healthier for all.” For more information on how to donate curtains, or how to apply for curtains, head to www.sustaintrust.org.nz
From left Sahara Eagle and her mother Silila Tuiletufuga from ANZ and Curtain Bank coordinator Erika Grant were all part of last Wednesday’s working bee.

A local man is perplexed by a large lily which has flowered in his garden over summer.
Kilbirnie resident Alan Murphy says he was given the bulb by his friends six years ago.
He says he believes the fl ower is a Muldoon lily – but says he cannot be too sure of exactly what type of fl ower it is.Although the plant has fl owered
each year, he says he has never seen it bloom like this before.
“This is the best it’s ever looked,
people that have seen it when they come over say that it’s a freak,” he laughs.
“I really am very proud of it.”Since recently retiring Alan says he
would like to spend more time in the garden. He says the lily has 40 or 50 fl owers on it, a far cry from the usual dozen or so.
HELPAre you able to identify the larger than life fl ower growing in Alan’s garden? If so contact [email protected] or 387 7160.

Primary school children will have a chance to learn from the big names in New Zealand sport at the annual Pelorus Stadium Sports Festival be-ing held on Tuesday March 18 in the Westpac Stadium.
Sporting legends will pass their experience onto Year 5 and 6 students, who will have the opportunity to "have-a-go" at sports they may not generally experience.
This year a record 67 schools have applied to attend the regional event, of which only 20 spots were available.
“An extremely strong level of coaches, former internationals, professional coaches, and experience will be on hand to help Sport Wellington staff and volunteers give the kids a taste of diff erent sports,” says organiser David Fa’atafa, from Sport Wellington. “It’s exciting these sports are able to come together to expose their codes at a grass-roots level."
For the first time in the festivals history, 20 different sports will be delivered at the event, including AFL.
Ten companies from across New Zealand and Australia are competing to design a new Children's Garden at Wellington's Botanic Gardens.
The garden, which will be on a hillside near the Treehouse Visitor Centre, will be a living classroom where children can learn about plants.
It will cost $1.5 million to build and $1 million for an educational programme, and will be designed with input from children.
Botanic Garden Manager David Sole says, "We want city kids to make the connections – to know where our food comes from, that we use plants to make our clothes, the houses we live in and for medicines."
Construction is due to start in Novem-ber and be completed by the middle of 2015. The garden will be open by February 2016.

Island Bay residents can cel-ebrate having a new place to go for a drink and a laugh.
Andrew (Will) and Jamie Williams opened Brew’d last Wednesday and have brought in Helena Gill to manage the community pub.
Helena says she is looking forward to providing a fun experience for everyone in the area.
“Island Bay has been crying out for a new place,” she says.
Will says Brew’d is the sixth local pub he and Jamie have bought.
The two old school mates bought their fi rst bar in 2007 and have been going strong since.
This is the second Brew’d they have opened, and Will explains that the name emphasises their focus on providing quality beer.
“We’re just trying to take it back to beer and the beer experience.
“We’ve got home brew kits where customers can brew their own beer.”
Will says he is pleased to bring Helena on as manager because she is friendly and organised.
She was the operations man-ager at Miramar Pub, and she is looking forward to the transi-tion to running her own show.
“It’s a lot smaller than what I’m used to,” she says.
Helena says she would like to take advantage of the small size to get to know people in the bar better.
“It’s intimate and community based.”
Will and Helena stress that the pub has something for everyone in the community, whether people want to have a few drinks with their mates or bring their kids along to have a pizza.
They say the menu is simple, but they aim to deliver qual-ity food and drink with every order.
Will says the pub is all about bringing Island Bay together, and hopes people think of Brew’d when they want to pop in for a drink.
Helena says, “I hope to do well for myself and everyone.”

Trustees of the Island Bay Natural Heritage Charitable Trust, who are the administra-
tors of Paekawakawa Reserve in Island Bay, welcomed locals to discuss their vision and plans for the Reserve.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the community to fi nd out
about what is happening in the Reserve, and learn about projects planned for 2014.

members of the community are invited to come along and get involved.

A long standing Island Bay resident has not let his age stop him from continuing to play an important part in the community.
85-year-old Ray Clegg helps to organise the University of the 3rd Age, and uses his connections with local rest home Kilmarnock Heights, to encourage senior members of the community to take part in local activities.
Although he still lives at home with his wife, Ray attends the day activity pro-gramme at Kilmarnock every Wednesday, and says he enjoys the companionship and friends he has made.
“It is relaxing, I enjoy it here and I have made friends with some of the other residents. They are great people here.”
Kilmarnock Heights Home embraces the Eden alternative. This is a model of care, practised across Enliven Central rest homes, which aims to ensure residents feel engaged, connected and purposeful.
As part of this philosophy residents are encouraged to maintain links and ties with
their local community, and other residents from Kilmarnock now join Ray at weekly meetings for the University of the 3rd Age
He says although he is getting older, he still likes to remain as busy as possible.
Each week he attends a local probus club, Thai Chi classes and organises guest speakers for the University of the 3rd Age.
“I still have a longing to be involved in things that I have been involved in my whole life.”
Ray spent 30 years working as a Salva-tion Army offi cer, and says because of this he still likes to have ties with members of the local community.
In particular he enjoys organising weekly guest speakers for the University of the 3rd Age, however he says he would not be able to do it with support from other members of the committee.
“Without them I wouldn’t be able to do it.”
The University of the 3rd Age runs every Thursday evening out of the Island Bay Community Centre.
Kilmarnock Heights Home resident Louis O’Neil (front) is just one of the residents who attends the University of the 3rd Age with Ray Clegg.

Evans Bay Intermediate School....
The new school year got underway at Evans Bay Intermediate with the whole school having a week to GO WELLINGTON. This is a biennial event for EBIS students.
Every student in the School got to spend 5 days doing different outdoor activities. Popular with every student was the day at Fergs Kayaks and Rock Climbing. The day on Somes Island was also a wonderful day where students went by ferry to the Island. For a high number of students, this was their fi rst time going on a boat like this. Hitting the high ropes at the Adrenalin Forest in Porirua, was another exciting adventure where students got to see how much they were willing to challenge themselves.
“The parent helpers that we had quite simply were amazing. They did a fantastic job accompanying every group and helping to ensure that students were supervised and safe.” Ed Trotter Assistant Principal said.
“There was a good variety of things that students got to do. They have had a very valuable time of learning. I have no doubt that they will be talking about the experiences they enjoyed, for a long time to come.” Ed concluded.

People across the Wellington region will be delighted to wel-come Prince William and Kate Middleton when they touch down in the country on April 7.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince George, arrive in Wellington on a Royal New Zealand Air Force air-craft, followed by a ceremonial welcome at Government House,
including a powhiri, guard of honour, and 21 gun salute.
The Queen reportedly gave special permission for the two heirs to the throne to travel on the same plane so Prince Wil-liam and Kate could bring baby George along.
The royals will travel around New Zealand for nine days as part of their down-under excur-

They will be based at Govern-ment House in Wellington but will also visit Auckland, Ham-ilton, Cambridge, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown and Blenheim.

Seeing the people I love having a great day and achieving things they never believed possible.

Meat, it’s so hard to choose though, roast lamb & crunchy roast spuds or the amazing crackling on my roast pork. Now I feel hungry.

Wellingtonians have an opportunity to catch a glimpse into the life of a marine biologist this Saturday at an open day being held at Victoria University’s Coastal Ecology Laboratory.
It is the only day this
year that the public will be able to visit the state-of-the-art marine rese-sarch facility.
Visitors will be able to see marine creatures up close, learn about the bi-ology of marine animals and plants, and talk to
marine scientists about their research.
Director of the Coastal Ecology Laboratory, Dr Jeff Shima, says there will be something for all ages, from interactive displays to touch tanks with marine life.
Experts and specialist researchers will be on hand to answer questions.
The open day on Sat-urday March 8 is part of Seaweek, an annualo event aiming to bring New Zealanders together to celebrate the sea.
The Laboratory will be open from 10am to 3pm, and is located at 396 The Esplanade, Island Bay. For more details about Seaweek events and activities, visit www.seaweek.org.nz/wellington.

Renovating can be costly and inconvenient, but can also increase the value and enjoyment of your home.
There are two main reasons why people renovate; to add to the comfort, use and value of the home, and to tidy it up to sell.
Before you launch into renovations, take time to consider whether the expense and disruption is justifi ed.

If you intend staying in the home you may want to:
- Add extra space to accommodate an expanding family, or simply to add a sense of spaciousness.
- Change the confi guration of the house for better fl ow, ease of use or orientation to sun and views.
- Update and remodel to give the house a fresher, more modern look. This could involve major changes such as taking out walls to enlarge a room, putting in a new kitchen, or installing new wallboards and ceilings. Or it could simply be a matter of painting or wallpapering.
- Restore the house to its original style (while adding modern features in some areas, like the kitchen and bathroom).
- Add value to increase your investment. If you are renovating to sell, it is likely
that you’ll want to give the house an inexpensive makeover to freshen it up and make it more attractive to buyers. For example, repainting, repapering, or changing dated or damaged fi xtures, such as a cracked basin in the bathroom.
Consider the tastes of potential buyers, which really means keeping everything fairly neutral to appeal to a wider range of people. Not everyone likes bright feature walls or pink bathtubs.
Renovations that will increase the appeal of your home may include painting the kitchen and bathroom, or putting in some decking to give an indoor-outdoor fl ow and an increased sense of space or some landscaping.
Don’t spend money that you won’t get back in the sale price. Ask a real estate agent for ideas to increase the house’s appeal, and how much you should spend without overcapitalising.

Gateway Baptist Church has had a new cross erected on the top of its building, thanks to help from a local building company, after the old cross fell down during a storm last year.
The existing white cross had been on top of the building since it was constructed in 1972, and after 40 years of Wellington wind and weather, the timber had rotted, causing it to fall during one of the big storms in October 2013.
Senior Pastor Phil Coates says above all they were relieved that no-one was hurt when it came down, as it landed on the footpath in several large pieces and came close to hitting several parked cars nearby.
Since then, a number of peo-ple from the community had noticed the cross was broken and had come into the church asking what had happened to it.
He says the church quickly received quotes to replace it, but there was concern it was going to be expensive, because it required hiring a scissor lift
to install it. Pastor Phil says luckily May-
croft Construction Ltd was next door to the church, build-ing Wellington City Council's Marshall Court housing com-plex, and kindly offered their help.
Site foreman Dan Bartrum noticed that part of the cross had broken off and offered to get Maycroft Construction to erect a new one, using the scissor lifts they had on site for construction.
This meant the church only had to pay the cost of materials for the cross.
On Thursday February 27 the new cross was erected by May-croft Construction Ltd, much to the delight of the church.
“We’re glad to have the cross back on our building, as it identifi es our site as a church, just like a hospital has a cross or McDonalds has the golden arches” says Pastor Phil.
He says the church is grateful to Dan and the team at Maycroft for their help.

Strathmore resident Terry Shore has completed his newest album, Poly Rhythm 2.
Terry released his debut album, Poly Rhythm 1, back in 2010 and hopes his new album will surpass the success of his fi rst record.
He says he sold 78 copies of his fi rst album, and 44 copies of Remem-brance, a 2012 EP.
Terry lists Duran Duran and Michael Jackson as his two primary infl uences.
“My music is generally infl uenced from 80s pop,” he adds.
The album features Terry on guitar and vocals, his two musical specialties.
Terry says he got his start as a schoolboy and has a quarter century of experience.
“I’ve been playing guitar and singing for 25 years.
“We had a good music teacher at my school and I also did choir.”
Terry began performing at a young age and says he now has been doing gigs for 18 years.
He has a launch party on March 22 at the Fringe Bar, and invites everyone to come along.
“I am also performing with my good friends the Cook Strait crew and Shan
Jordan.”Terry will be performing songs from
his new album as well as his new EP.He says people should arrive around
8pm in order to get a good seat.Terry hopes to sell a few of his copies
at the show in addition to the copies he has sold on iTunes and record stores across Wellington.
In listening to his album, Terry says “expect something to pop.”
“It’s something a little different.”
People can also check out www.soundcloud.com/terry-shore to hear more of Terry’s music.

The 2013 infl uenza immunisa-tion campaign was launched earlier this month by Health Minister Tony Ryall who himself received a vaccination.
“We want more New Zealand-ers to be protected against this serious disease, and this year the goal is to vaccinate 1.2 million people,” says Mr Ryall.
Around 400 New Zealanders die, directly or indirectly each year from infl uenza. Last year the disease put more than a thousand people in hospital and nearly 50,000 people visited their GP with infl uenza like illness.
“Last year over one million New Zealanders had a fl u vacci-
nation-around 23 percent of the population. However we want more people to be protected, and I encourage you to get your fl u vaccination, especially if you are in one of the at risk groups,” says Mr Ryall.
The infl uenza vaccine is ap-proximately 80% effective in preventing infection with infl u-enza A and B viruses.
Vaccination again infl uenza is needed every year as protection lessens over time, and infl uenza can be caused by different types of infl uenza viruses that are not represented in the previous year’s vaccine.
Strike before infl uenza does
Take a visit to your local GP to be vaccinated against infl uenza before it stikes this winter.
Tinnitus is a physical condition, experi-enced as noises or ringing in the ears or head when no such external physical noise is present.
It may be an intermittent sound or an an-noying continuous sound in one or both ears.
Its pitch can go from a low roar to a high squeal or whine. Prior to any treatment, it is important to undergo a thorough examina-tion and evaluation by your audiologist.
An essential part of the treatment will
be your understanding of tinnitus and its causes.
One of the preventable causes of inner ear tinnitus is excessive noise exposure. In some instances of noise exposure, tinnitus is the fi rst symptom before hearing loss develops, so it should be considered a warning sign and an indication of the need for hearing protection in noisy environments.
For more information about Tinnitus contact your doctor or audiologist today.
Are your ears ringing?
Winter is just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean our Summer glow has to leave with the long, warm days. Here are four simple tips to help you stay healthy.
Eat Well Make sure you get at least three servings of
vegetables each day, and two servings of fresh fruit. In addition, opt for whole grains when you can, and make sure you’re taking in at least two servings of milk or yogurt each day.
Wash Your HandsWash your hands with hot, soapy water
every time you use the bathroom and before
every meal.Get Plenty of SleepTo make sure your body is fully capable
of fi ghting off illnesses this winter, create a consistent bedtime routine. This should include going to bed at the same time each night so that your body learns to anticipate sleep.
Take a Multi-VitaminThis simple daily step can play an important
role in keeping your body healthy. Get into the habit of taking a once-daily multi-vitamin.

After a day of howling storms that battered the capital, last Thursday was a stunner that capped off a fun-fi lled golf fundraiser for Mary Potter Hospice.
Around 60 golfers enjoyed a perfect day on March 6. By chipping shots into a paddling pool, challenging a golf pro to tee off on his knees and “buying” some talented golfing
prowess (also known as cheating), they were in to win some great prizes and help an iconic local charity at the same time.
Provisionally, $3200 was raised and this total will increase when fi nal donations are counted.
Wellington companies TDM Consulting, Pacifi c Consulting and Blackyard Consulting hosted the tournament.

The Island Bay and Berhampore Community Orchard is getting ready to celebrate its 1000th day on March 23.
Orchard trustee Bronwen Newton says the orchard will hold a low-key celebration and the whole commu-nity is invited to come along.
“We will be roasting marshmal-lows and there will be forts for the kids.”
Bronwen says she is proud of the progress the orchard has made - from the time the seeds were planted as an idea to the fi rst physical seed being placed in the ground.
“1000 days ago, we had a vision and now it’s here.”
Since the success of the orchard, Bronwen says she has been focused on sprouting more community orchards and gardens in the area.
“We want our offi ce to become an umbrella organization.”
She says she has been most re-cently been working with a woman who wants to grow another orchard in Berhampore.
Bronwen says the community orchard is always looking for new volunteers and people who aren't too busy with their own gardens can feel free to come along and help out.
In addition to the trees in the orchard, Bronwen highlights the importance of continuing to plant trees.
“As the old Chinese proverb goes, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.”
Bronwen says she encourages peo-ple to get out and enjoy themselves at the orchard on March 23.
“Come along and hang out.”The celebration will take place
from 2-4 pm. For more information, head to the
Berhampore Island Bay Community Orchard Facebook page.

A day full of chanting and record breaking points helped St Patrick’s College Town win its third successive McEvedy Shield title in Newtown Park on Tuesday.
St Pat’s Town won by the biggest margin in the last decade with a total of 228 points, compared to runner up Wellington College’s 179 points.
St Pat’s Silverstream 88 points and Rongotai 55 fi nished third and fourth respectively.
St Pat’s Town Rector Neal
Swindells says there was lots of pressure for his college leading up to the event.
“There was a pressure for us to take it out and the boys have been talking about three in a row, and to win by quite a margin was wonderful,” he says.
“It has an amazing history that the student and the staff are really keyed up for and it’s wonderful to win.”
St Pats Town McEvedy captain Daniel Buttar talks of the emotion of winning the McEvedy shield.
“The win meant a lot to me because McEvedy is one of the
most important sporting events for the school in the year, so to lead the team to victory meant the world to me.
“Running the last relay and seeing the boys so happy about the win, I felt very privileged.” Buttar says.
Matt Eagle who is a teacher at Rongotai College has been part of the McEvedy Shield for 33 years as a student and a teacher.
“It’s challenging and dynamic day because it’s a slice of New Zealand culture and society,” Mr Eagle says.
Marcus Karamanolis, who is
year 13 at St Pat’s Town, broke the 1500m record that had lasted for almost 50 years and the record for the 3000m, which had been set by Rongotai’s Phil Starr in 1992.
Karamanolis recorded 4:04.31 for the 1500m, inside the 4:04.60 recorded by a Scots College athlete in 1966, while his 3000m time of 8:45.27 was comfortably inside Starr's record of 8:50.20.
Dave Mackenzie from College Sport Wellington acknowledged the hard work that went into the day but was disappointed by the behaviour of the supporters.
“There is a huge amount of
time and energy that goes into preparing for such a big event and the athletes and coaches from all schools should be acknowledged for the work they do for their school and community.
“It was however disappointing this year that the non-competitors from some of the schools directed too much attention on themselves rather than acknowledging the tremendous accomplishments of their athletes.”
“It is a fi ne line balancing patri-otic support and being disrespect-ful,” Mr Mackenzie says.
St Pat’s Town win McEvedy Shield…AGAIN!
Patricia Reilly’s Brooklyn Rem-buden Karate & Fitness School is offering self-defense classes for people who are pressed for time.
She says, the ideal for self defense is regular practise of a martial art, however it does not suit everyone’s busy schedules or lifestyle choices.
“Self defense isn’t just learning about defensive moves to save
you when or if you are attacked, that is part of it, but there is much more to it than that,” says Patricia.
“It is about a state of mind.”Patricia says self-defense re-
quires you to be grounded in the now, so that you are aware of what is going on around you so that you can react to it instantaneously.
In traditional karate training there is a lot of repetition in order to program the brain to react automatically.
“The action becomes a refl ex action by the body, more fl uid.
“Eventually no conscious thought is involved - only ac-tion.”
Patricia says her classes can teach people to be aware of
their surroundings and be smart about potentially threatening situations.
Patricia says people should attend a self-defense course that will teach you some simple practical defensive moves, give you assertiveness training and teach you about the places and situations you should avoid.
In April holidays Brooklyn
Rembuden is running evening self defense coursse (6 sessions).
