WINTHROP UNIVERSITYCONVOCATION
August 24, 2020Dr. George Hynd, Presiding
A convocation is a formal assembly of designated individuals brought together for a specific purpose. The word comes from the Latin phrase “to call together”
and throughout history has been associated with religious or academic gatherings.
At Winthrop University, Convocation is a tradition dating to the presidency of founder David Bancroft Johnson. In these early assemblies, President Johnson
gathered the student body together, welcomed them to the institution and provided expectations and words of encouragement to mark the beginning of the school year.
Today, as in the past, the inauguration of a new academic year brings this formal assembly. Dr. Hynd has convened you and all members of the entering class to provide an official welcome to the campus community. Representatives are on
hand to offer greetings from the City of Rock Hill, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and student body. After today’s installation, you will be a full member of the
Winthrop community of learners, with all the rights, privilegesand responsibilities entailed therein.
