Inspired by the 1973 theatrical film, “westworld” stars anthony hopkins as the creator of an old west theme park where well-heeled clients can live out their wildest fantasies, serviced by humanlike robot “hosts.” george dickie speaks with hopkins and thandie newton, who plays a host, about their characters and the series.

12-13 A race through history — to prevent a villain from altering it — is the theme of “Timeless,” NBC’s sci-fi adventure series premiering Monday. Star Abigail Spencer and executive producers Eric Kripke (“Supernatural”) and Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) tell Jay Bobbin about putting a modern sensibility on events of the past.

14-15 A former presidential first daughter gets a chance to make up for questionable actions by using her know-how as an attorney in an elite New York law unit in “Conviction,” an ABC drama premiering Monday. Stars Hayley Atwell and Eddie Cahill and executive producer Liz Friedman tell Jay Bobbin about the show.

17 The apocalypse is treated in an unusually cheerful way in “No Tomorrow,” a CW series premiering Tuesday. Stars Tori Anderson and Joshua Sasse and executive producer Corinne Brinkerhoff explain the concept, inspired by a Brazilian series, to Jay Bobbin.

Editor's choice story

By george dickieas theme parks go, westworld is about as adult as it gets.

as portrayed in the new hBo drama series “westworld,” inspired by the 1973 michael crichton feature film and premiering sunday, oct. 2, it’s a place where monied clientele get to live out their fantasies in an old west setting.

want to take down a desperado and his gang in a saloon shootout? you can do that. torture a confession out of a bandit? you can do that, too. Bed a prostitute? yep, as many and as often as you want.

your every fantasy can be indulged without fear of repercussion, injury or death. the only limitation is how deeply you want to explore your own desires.

of course, all these characters in your fantasy are actually very humanlike robots known as “hosts,” which cry apparently real tears, bleed apparently real blood and die apparently real deaths.

that is, until their theme park overseers and programmers haul them in, clean them up, wipe their memories and put them back out to service the next group of paying “guests.”

the only problem is some are beginning to malfunction, some due to a faulty update to their programming, others for reasons unknown. and that could mean danger for the guests – and ultimately everyone at the park.

heading westworld is its founder and creative director dr. robert Ford, a brilliant, taciturn man played by anthony hopkins, who likens his character to another famous theme park creator.

“he’s like a walt disney,” hopkins says. “he’s created this theme park and he lives and he breathes this theme park. ... it begins to run out of his control and he knows there’s

something amiss because these robots, these hosts are beginning to act out on their own. they have their own motives, and Jeffrey wright’s character reports to me, ‘there’s something going wrong.’ ... he discovers that ... these robots are beginning to think for themselves and turn against the humans.”

the task of discovering what is going on with the hosts and fixing

it falls to head programmer Bernard lowe (wright, “confirmation”), whose

keen observations of human nature drive the creation of these artificial people.

among the more problematic are dolores (evan rachel wood, “true Blood”), a beautiful and kind rancher’s daughter who begins to discover the true nature of her existence; and maeve (thandie newton, “mission: impossible ii”), a madam with a knack for reading humans, who begins to go rogue.

Filming the first season’s 10 episodes proved to be an emotional experience for newton, who had to consider her own existence in creating a robot prostitute with problems.

“we had to really consider everything because every detail of our existence as robots – but also potentially the humans, too – is going to be questioned in the series,” she says. “so understanding the simple baseline was crucial – you know, where we were sort of springing from. so i didn’t know whether i was going to have to speak with a funny voice or whatever.

“(series creators Jonathan nolin and lisa Joy) were saying they wanted us to be as human as any human, to totally relax into it,” she continues. “that sort of seems liberating but actually it complicates it even more because then the moments where we do have to separate and behave when we glitch is almost more difficult to do because we’re so natural and human. ... to suddenly introduce something robotic really stands out. ... they’re subtle and they are very disturbing.”

Taraji P. Henson

Mariah Carey is a guest star in the Oct. 5 episode of “Empire.” How did you find working with her?she was great. i mean, she’s fabulous. she’s beautiful to look at. wish i could wear a leotard like that, and those heels. i mean, she brings a sense of ... what mariah brings to the music industry, she brought it to our show. i’m grateful that she spent time with little ol’ us.

Much of “Empire’s” drama remains driven by you as Cookie and Terrence Howard as Lucious. Does playing out the conflict between them still feel fresh to you?this friction between these two characters, sometimes they can when you read it, it seems mundane – but then it challenges the artist to make it new and fresh each and every time, to peel back yet another layer of this complicated, complex relationship. so it’s challenging for all of us.

What do you think is Cookie’s main driving force at this point?i think at the core of her very being is her family, her boys. anything, any decision she makes, anything she does, it’s for the good of her family. i don’t know what parent doesn’t understand “by any means necessary” when it comes to your children. something just takes you overshe may make decisions or choices that a person who doesn’t have a child couldn’t even understand. her deciding to go to jail for 17 years to save her boys from being statistics, that was a conscious choice she made. she could have ratted lucious out. she could have said, “he was just as dirty as me.” But he was the talent, and if she’d gone to jail, how were her boys going to eat? who was going to save them from being another statistic from the ‘hood? so everything she does is for the greater good of her family.

Lee MAjOrSDid you get soaked in blood just like your fellow “Ash vs. Evil Dead” castmates while shooting Season 2?

yes, i got indoctrinated fairly quickly. all my shows and series, we never could use a lot of blood. you know, back starting with “the Big Valley,” if we shot somebody it wouldn’t barely show any blood. even going into (“the six million dollar man”), “Fall guy” and all that, the three networks – you could only dabble a little blood on somebody. But this one, yeah. (series star Bruce campbell) was chain-sawing somebody and it splattered all over me. i didn’t know they had this machine and they stuck it right down about where my belt would be. and when the chainsaw started going (laughs), this machine started up and it just threw it all over me. i didn’t have a chance to even close my eyes. it went in my eyes, my nose, everything.

So it was delivered with velocity then?

yeah. ... they have this cannon that shoots it at (the actors), too. they can make different splatters, whether it’s a big, wide one, which you want the wider (because) the more it splatters, the less it hurts you. if they shoot a big wad of blood at you, it really will sting you a little.

Aren’t there fine sprays, too? yeah, that’s what i got. it wasn’t that fine. i mean, when you see it on screen it was bloody (laughs). But it was so damn sticky and you walk around in it all day and ... my shirt would dry up and it would stick to my skin and it felt like cardboard, almost like they had to peel it off of me.

george dickie’s Q&a

Your videos of random fan encounters on the Web are hilarious. Are you doing many of them?a little bit here and there, sure. i’ve done (them) leaving the racetrack a few times this year and then once again not too long ago. we were just kind of tooling around the motor-home area where the fans are at and saw another fan that had stickers all over their motor-home with 18 (Busch’s car number) and stuff on it, so i signed their motor-home.

What’s the funniest encounter you’ve had so far?i would say definitely the woman that was there on that video that went viral, where she just kind of lost it and got a little loopy there. But she’s really cool. she’s fun. she actually was a guest of ours at another race a few weeks later than that video was shot. so we got to meet them up close and personal and i know them quite well.

In winning the Sprint Cup series title last year, did that experience make you a better driver?oh no doubt, definitely. ... i feel like being able to win the championship last year, it sort of relieves a bit of that same pressure i felt years beforehand, where you had to win your first championship. everybody expected me to be able to win a championship and they were just always kind of waiting for when that would happen. and so this time around, being that i’ve already won that championship, we can kind of relax a little bit and work as though we’re kind of racing with house money again.you take a little bit of the pressure off and you gain some confidence knowing that (since) you’ve done it once before, you can do it again. and sometimes the racing gods are with you, they’re on your side and they’re going to help you through it and other times they’re not and it’s not your year.

story

The focus is on technique in Season 4 of ‘Lidia’s Kitchen’to speak with lidia Bastianich, even over the phone, is to be inspired to cook.

indeed, the chef, author, restaurateur and host of pBs’ “lidia’s kitchen,” which returns for its fourth season saturday, oct. 8 (check local listings), is also a teacher at heart who will casually rattle off the steps in preparing one of her recipes for anyone who asks, the goal being to get people into the kitchen and try making one themselves.

“this season, we’re really focused on technique,” she explains, “and what we included ... is a master class. so one of the recipes has a master technique, and i take that technique and i kind of recite it for them step by step: ‘in making this dish up, this is important. choose the right rice. have a great stock. the ratio of rice to stock takes one cup of rice to make two cups of finished risotto, and it takes about three cups of liquids to get there and about 14 minutes.’ and so on down the line. you know, i kind of will recite the whole technique of what i’m going to show them.”

probably the simplest technique that anyone can use to turn out a professional quality meal, Bastianich says, is searing – especially with shrimp. For this, you need a good, hot cast-iron pan – and some patience.

“when you do this technique do not overcrowd the pan,” she says, “because if you overcrowd the pan you get cooking and steaming and they’ll release their waters and then that’s finished. you want, whatever you put in that pan, to have enough space to get a crust. so if you do shrimps, do it in two or three batches. Just put them individually in in the hot pan, turn them around quickly because shrimps take two or three minutes to cook and then they’re done. scallops you can do that and so on down the line.”

got that? now get cooking.

strange as it may sound, peyton list had never heard of the movie from which her new cw series is reimagined. and when she finally did check out the 2000 dennis Quaid/Jim caviezel drama “Frequency,” she was pleasantly surprised.

“i don’t know how i missed it,” says the 30-year-old Baltimore native and star of the hourlong drama of the same title that premieres wednesday, oct. 5.

“everyone else saw it. i don’t know what happened.

“i remember they told me in the breakdown of the pilot that it was a remake from a movie in 2000, and i was like, ‘oh. i consider myself a total movie junkie. i don’t know how i missed that but i’ll check it out after i read the script.’ and i read the script and there were certain things that were clearly throwbacks and homages to the movie that i didn’t pick up on, and once i did finally see the movie i was like, ‘oh, that’s cool.’ and it was so wonderful.

“like i talk about it like no one else has seen it. i’m (telling my friends), ‘this is a great movie. you should go and see it,”’ she says with a laugh. “and they were like, ‘yeah, we know. we saw it when it came out.’ ”

in the series, list plays the female version of the caviezel character, raimy, an nypd detective who discovers she can communicate via ham radio with her father Frank (riley smith), a fellow cop who died 20 years earlier when raimy was 8. unlike the movie, raimy didn’t have a happy relationship with her dad, who left her and her mom (devin kelley) behind when he went deep undercover, got corrupted and got killed – or so the official story went. But few people knew

about the secret undercover sting operation Frank was really involved with. meanwhile, raimy is left with a lot of feelings of betrayal and resentment.

“Forging a relationship when you believe that your parent is somehow a negative influence on you,” she says, “... i think that adds a different element to this relationship as they try to proceed and get to know each other, the fact that it’s not

story

By Jay BoBBinclearly, one of the big concerns of the new television season is time.

traveling across it is the theme of several debuting series, including two movie spinoffs: the cw’s “Frequency” (premiering wednesday, oct. 5) and aBc’s “time after time” (due at midseason). it’s also the thrust of nBc’s science-fiction adventure “timeless,” which marks a teaming of two successful creator-producers – eric kripke (“supernatural”) and shawn ryan (“the shield”) – as it starts monday, oct. 3.

“timeless” unites a history professor (played by “rectify’s” abigail spencer), a delta Force veteran (“90210” alum matt lanter) and a scientific engineer (malcolm Barrett, “the soul man”) to use a tycoon’s (paterson Joseph) secret, literal time machine to pursue a villain (“er” veteran goran Visnjic) who wants to change the course of history. their first stop: new Jersey circa 1937, in the moments before the german airship hindenburg explodes there.

that’s just the first of many planned, very famous destinations for “timeless.” ryan says, “we think one of the things that makes our show unique and different is that we are going back to the assassination of president lincoln ... (and) to 1962 las Vegas. we’re going to go to the alamo. we’re going to go to watergate. we’re going to go to germany during world war ii. we’re going to the space race the day we landed on the moon. those things, i think, essentially are the heart and core of our show.”

the catch for the heroes of “timeless” is that in trying to stop the enemy, they can’t do anything

to change events of the past. the potential ripple effect could alter many lives, as

spencer’s character lucy learns vividly by the end of the opening hour, and the actress recalls a big lure for her was ryan and kripke telling her that she would “never be bored” making the show.

“as an actor, that is such a delicious treat,” spencer says, noting that for an episode set in 1865, “i am in the most glorious get-up of all time, with the hoop skirt and the pantaloon and the corset. and then i’m going to be in 1960s wear, so it’s really been a beautiful process ... but what i’m most interested in is the mystery that’s going to be revealed over time, so we’re keeping some things close to the vest.”

the time-traveling trio naturally brings modern sensibilities with them into the past. the “timeless” creative team intends to highlight that aspect frequently, as in the pilot when rufus (Barrett) cites michael Jordan and michael Jackson in yelling about black history at a prejudiced 1930s foe who wouldn’t know of those later legends.

“there’s so much untold history from a minority perspective, from a female perspective,” kripke reasons. “and i think there’s a very intentional, conscious decision that of our three time travelers, one is african-american and one is female. we’re really looking for a door in to not just tell the iconic history that everyone’s heard before, but to tell a really exciting and fresh history that isn’t dusty and isn’t a school lesson, but is violent and exciting and very current – and allows us, frankly, to make commentary on issues that are really happening today.”

By Jay BoBBinFor evidence that careers can advance even under trying circumstances, “conviction” fills the bill.

premiering monday, oct. 3, the aBc drama series casts hayley atwell – fresh off her two-season run on the network in “marvel’s agent carter” – as hayes morrison, an attorney and member of a former presidential family who has succeeded in alienating her loved ones. her actions could land her in jail and derail her mother’s political ambitions, unless she agrees to work with a new york district attorney (“csi: ny” alum eddie cahill) in a newly formed unit that probes suspected cases of wrongful conviction.

“it’s very unlikely that we really get to know the ins and outs of people’s kind of unresolved family issues within a very public realm,” atwell says of her new character’s background, “so that obviously was not available to me. i looked at just watching people in positions of power, and the faces that they have to put on and how they choose to work a room.

“you can see that with ceos or movie stars or politicians across the board, and i think that is a really interesting part of who hayes morrison is, that she can do that,” adds atwell. “she’s been trained. it’s in her dna to know how to do that, but then, what makes it interesting as an actor is to find where the chinks in the armor are, and the triggers of where she might just mess it

up and the kind of underlying vulnerability ... kind of the cost of having to be on form all the time, and what that kind of does to her own psyche.”

“conviction” weaves that persona into a theme that executive producer liz Friedman (“house,” “elementary”) deems increasingly prevalent. “i think we are at a really unique social moment where it’s clear that the legal system, which we all rely on so much, has these key flaws in it,” she says, “and we are trying to figure out how to make sense of that for ourselves. we need the police, but we are now seeing them as people, and we are seeing that there are mistakes made there. and how do we correct that and go forward? what’s great is to be able to have some of those conversations in the context of these great mystery stories that we are telling.”

hayes fits into the scenario, Friedman reasons, as “a very troubled, sort of iconic woman who had been in the public eye and had made missteps. what’s it like for her to look at people who have made missteps or just been put in a bad situation in their life, and they are paying this huge price that she’s never had to pay because of her privilege? instantly, i knew that’s who it had to be.”

with mark gordon (“grey’s anatomy,” “criminal minds”) also among its executive producers, “conviction” also features series veterans shawn ashmore (“the Following”), merrin dungey (“alias”) and emily kinney (“the walking dead”). the show gives co-star cahill a chance to refine his screen image from “csi: ny’s” streetwise detective don Flack – and even rachel’s (Jennifer aniston) hunky assistant tag on “Friends” – as he now plays the more sophisticated d.a. conner wallace.

“he aspires to be who she is, or covets what she has and maybe where she comes from,” cahill reflects. “he’s politically ambitious.

i think he’s very bright, as is she. hayley had a really nice way of summing up their attraction, saying, ‘they give each other mental orgasms.’ i feel like there are these two sort-of prizefighters who are constantly figuring out how to best each other ... and in that, i think there’s respect, i think there’s attraction, and i think there’s a real will to win at all costs.”

By george dickiemodern science tells us that homo sapiens first walked the earth 200,000 years ago in eastern africa. how the species managed to migrate to all seven continents, adapt to extreme environments and dominate the planet is the subject of a new documentary airing this week on pBs’ “noVa.”

the two-hour “great human odyssey,” premiering wednesday, oct. 5 (check local listings), uses interviews with historians, anthropologists, geneticists and archaeologists to paint a picture of a species that progressed from a few thousand hunter-gatherers living a precarious existence in africa to populate every corner of the globe, along the way teaching themselves survival skills such as language, hunting, diving, weapon making, boat building and ocean navigation.

But how did they acquire the tools that enabled them to survive and thrive even in saharan heat or an ice age? anthropologist niobe thompson looked at the methods of primitive modern-day cultures for clues, such as a group of nomadic reindeer herders in the russian arctic, who in the film appear quite comfortable in temperatures of minus-40 or lower. For them, reindeer are key to their survival system, supplying them with food from their meat and clothing from their skins.

“one of the things that you soon discover is that the winter is a resource,” thompson says. “the cold is a resource. it’s not an enemy. the cold keeps things frozen. it’s easier to travel over the tundra when it’s frozen. the

reindeer, which are your walking larder of food, are more comfortable in the winter. the insects aren’t bothering them. so, if you have the technology to survive in that kind of world, it’s actually much more comfortable than summertime, which is wet, hot, and buggy. right? so winter is the good time. and what we tried to do with this film is show what a wonderful way of life it is.”

through genetic testing of remains, scientists posit that humans migrated from ethiopia to europe and asia about 100,000 years ago. From there, one group moved to north america on the land bridge across the Bering sea while another went south across land to what is now the pacific islands. From there, another group sailed east to south america.

tens of thousands of years later, these peoples all share much of the same genetic coding that our ethiopian ancestors had, whether asian, african, european or from the americas.

“the diversity of colors, the diversity of language, and everything that you see has happened very, very recently in human history,” says paleontologist dr. Bernard asfaw, who appears in the film. “we are at least 7 million years old, our species, our genus ... but homo sapiens are the late comers and the last ones. and the diversities that you see in the world, it is very, very, very recent. and the difference between us as it’s been proved by the geneticists, it’s almost minimal. that minimal difference in the one that you see, all colors, that some of us try to capitalize for nothing.”

By Jay BoBBin it would be hard to find a more cheery take on an apocalypse than “no tomorrow.”

premiering tuesday, oct. 4, the cw series has an offbeat take – to put it mildly – on a possibly impending disaster that could wipe out all of civilization. the perfectly ordered life of quality-control worker evie (tori anderson, “killjoys”) is turned upside-down when she meets and falls for the liberated Xavier (Joshua sasse, “galavant”), who inspires her to throw all of her planning to the wind and live for the moment ... especially since he’s convinced an asteroid will destroy earth in just over eight months. while trying to determine if he knows what he’s talking about, she considers making and following a bucket list, as he’s doing.

inspired by a Brazilian show, “no tomorrow” was co-developed for u.s. television by executive producer corinne Brinkerhoff, creator of cBs’ summer drama “american gothic.” she reasons there are “certainly plenty of ‘apocalyptic doom’ kind of shows, and we wanted an ‘apocalyptic joy’ kind of show. and as paradoxical as that might sound, i think that there’s something that we all fundamentally understand and relate to about thinking, ‘well, what if it’s true? what if his math really all checks out?’ and it may very well.

Earth

“what are we all needing to do more to better seize the day and stay in the moment?,” adds Brinkerhoff. “i think we all fundamentally know, on a gut level that the clock is ticking and that there’s no guarantee of any time. what if you embrace that in a way that felt joyful and spontaneous, as opposed to doom and gloom? that’s really what we love about the show.”

as the series’ heroine, anderson allows that it helps for the character to be intrigued by someone who believes the end is coming. “it’s whether or not she thinks he’s certifiable, or if that matters, if it means just living your life more fully,” the actress reflects. “it might be something that she struggles with and grapples with, but i think at the end of the day, he’s so intriguing and so captivating that she’s drawn to him, no matter what ... because when you fall in love, you can’t help who you fall in love with.”

in playing the object of that affection, sasse appreciates the live-for-now theme of “no tomorrow.” he maintains, “that’s totally my vibe. i just think it’s wonderful that a tV company like the cw has picked this up and is running with it because, especially in today’s world, i think this is a really important message to grasp. i’m a big advocate of putting your phone down and doing something with your day.”

nobody in baseball currently throws harder than the chicago cubs closer aroldis chapman. the best teams in the national league are about to find that out as major league Baseball’s playoff rounds begin this week. Barring a historic collapse (chicago entered september with a 15-game lead in the nl central division), the cubs and eventually chapman will take the field when the national league divisional series begins Friday, oct. 7 on Fs1 and the mlB network.

this is chapman’s third team in the past year. after defecting from cuba he signed a six-year contract with the cincinnati reds and by early 2012 was the team’s closer. along the way he amazed everyone in baseball with his 100-mph fastballs, which helped make him one of the most effective closers in the game. the reds made the post season in 2012 and 2013 but have fallen on hard times and are rebuilding.

prior to the 2016 season chapman, who was suspended for 30 games over a domestic dispute, was traded to the new york yankees. the yanks, however sent him to the cubs prior to the 2016 trade deadline. his presence has helped reinstall confidence in a team that opened the season on a roll but stumbled mid-season, but still has a pitching staff among the league’s best.

a free agent at season’s end, it’s anyone’s guess where he’ll be next season. But this october he has a chance to help the cubs overcome one of the longest championship droughts in sports history.

it’s always interesting to see two of the screen’s newest stars team up, and that’s certainly true of the drama “the light Between oceans” – from director-screenwriter derek cianfrance, who delved into similarly personal tales with his earlier works “Blue Valentine” and “the place Beyond the pines.”

michael Fassbender (“steve Jobs”) and recent oscar winner alicia Vikander (“the danish girl”) play a couple whose relationship has plenty of hurdles, right from the outset. he’s a world war i veteran deeply haunted by what he saw in combat, and a lighthouse-keeper job promises him the isolation he wants.

however, just before starting it, he meets, falls for and marries the Vikander character ... and off they go together. they soon want to start a family, but find they’re unable to become parents themselves, a sad revelation that ultimately makes for some of the film’s most resonant moments (handled quite commendably by the actors).

they then see it as something of a sign when a baby turns up in a rowboat along with a deceased man, prompting the wife to claim the child as her own, though the husband is prone to report the situation to those who

should know about it. his mate talks him out of doing so.

if you guess that will come back to haunt them later, you win: the spouses eventually encounter a woman (played by another oscar winner, rachel weisz) who turns out to be the child’s biological mother, still wondering what became of her relatives – and leading to a showdown over whose custody the youngster will end up in.

Based on a novel by m.l. stedman, “the light Between oceans” is a simple story of emotions both concealed and laid bare, and it’s up to what’s put on that very basic framework to make it compelling cinematically. luckily, it has the right talents involved to do that, and the sum is worthy of the parts.

that result isn’t splashy nor showy, but it’s literally lovely, thanks to its bounty of coastal scenery ... as well as to the deeply felt performances by Fassbender and Vikander, who now are an off-screen couple, too. a serious-minded showcase for dedicated artists, it’s just the right kind of project to help set up the fall movie season.
