Converting Survey Points to 3D Contours
Firstly insert field survey data points into Autocad (See Recon to Autocad Guide) Then create feature outline e.g. ditch outline, slots, baulks etc.
Save as a .dxf file and select the points required for the 3D contoured area (select tools tab after selecting save as .dxf and tick select points box)
Then open the .dxf file just created and the isolated points selected should only be present
Open the program Dxf2xyz 2.0, select the .dxf file just created and then click save (file name).xyz in the upper right corner
A conversion complete message should come up in the lower left message box
Before you convert to the xyz format you should make sure the points box is selected in the Entities window
Now open Surfer (this version is Surfer 8) choose the spreadsheet form and select Import from the File pulldown menu
Select All Files from the Files of type line Then select the newly Created .xyz file and Open
Select the above options in the export tab
Now choose the New option from the File pulldown and select Plot Document
Now choose Data from the Grid pulldown
Open the newly created .dat file which should be accompanied by a Grid icon
Kriging method should be selected and I choose to deselect the Grid Report box
Select the Grid file required to produce the contour map
A sparsely occupied contour map should now have been created
Double clicking the map will display a Contours Properties window
Tick smooth contours and select high amount
Click on the Levels tab and reduce the interval for the creation of contours to 0.01m
The Contour Map should now be more detailed Deselect the Axis boxes in the Object Manager window to the right of the screen
Choose to create a wireframe map from the Map pulldown
Deselect the Axis boxes as well as the Wireframe box in the Object Manager window before selecting Export Contours
Save the 3D contour map as a .dxf file
