The Convergence Series evinces the influence of time spent in Thailand and other parts of Asia. The concept of the wholeness of self motivates the mid-size and large canvases, which feature a contrast of semi-precious stones (mostly garnets) and acrylic paint. The balance of these elements, providing a rich, incan-descent palette, evokes a slow, luminous eruption. The series evokes the intuitive self and seeks to capture the serenity of the transcendental soul.

This painting addresses the transcendental quality of the spirit’s consciousness, the manner in which the spirit comes and goes, slipping away, then returning.

“The Convergence paintings...seem to come from a more interior place, a place within Alston’s consciousness - what she calls a “found state of being”- rather than within the shaped consciousness of humankind.”

Alston’s paintings Oval of Gold 1, 2, and 3 were influenced by her visit to Thailand. She visited many of the temples throughout the country and watched the higher-evolved monks in their practice, much as she did when in Kyoto, Japan. The spirit of the Thai people had a great impact on Alston. She found Thailand to be a fascinating place, filled with a free spirit – perhaps the result of the country never having been occupied by a colonial power.

These paintings are mainly created by the use of the semi precious stone garnet, pumice gel, and acrylic paint. Most of the media is applied and tooled with various instruments.
The garnet is sometimes painted, but other times left in its natural state, which con-ducts natural light. Exposure to light is the most important aspect while installing one of Alston’s garnet pieces. When placed in indirect light, the media transcends to a higher luminous state. The optical experience features a drastic transformation ac-cording to light. One collector installed a work of Alston’s garnet so when she awak-ens, the painting is taking on the characteristic of a resplendent glow. As the time of day changes, so does the optical experience.

Rebecca Alston CD. Human Habitat Under the Oceanc. 2006-07
Prisma on Paper8” x 16”
20.3 x 40.6 cm
The fascinating thing about the ocean is that it is similar to what one may experience in space exploration. They are frontier environments due to the extreme physical conditions and the vulnerability of the human individual within the environments. There have been few that have had the opportunity and desire to push the boundaries in these areas.
When sciences found light under the ocean, sometime ago, it sparked new possibilities. Conceptually this drawing “Human Habitat Under the Sea” was created circa 2006-7 as an idea generation, that there is the possibility of creating a human habitat under the ocean. Imagine how fascinating it would be for the human to have this experience as a possibility for entertainment or for living. I envision this as a large-scale environment that could accommodate a large number of people. This seems like a real possibility with the water level rising and the population growth increasing. This would be an ingenious project to create an environment using a lot of transparent materials that would enable the individual to experience the ocean environment from a different perspective.
With the use of light the ocean life could be viewed from a completed different perspective, areas could also be maintained as a dark environment that would offer the viewer an experience at the depths where the creatures generate their own illumination. Of course the pressure and forces created by the ocean would be something for the engineer and scientist to deal with. This would be a major undertaking. Drawing the heat and energy could be drawn from the core of the earth.
