areas there are common features and
trends that are pushing Barco into
developing leading edge visualization
tools and systems for complex
systems management. Companies in
this market often invest in large
systems with very long lifetimes and
as such need to work with suppliers
who have values like sustainable
growth, long term customer
relationships and ease of integration.
This fits well with Barco’s vision and
profi le. To date we have been
successful mainly due to the direct
relat ionships with end-users,
integrators and partner vendors.
Together with these partners we
jointly provide world class, reliable
visualization tools to keep most of the
world’s basic infrastructure running,
from the operational control rooms in
a power plant , to the production
rooms in oil and gas towards the
dashboard applications in business
suites.
Reading through this newsletter, you
will learn more about how integrators
are using our years of experience to
grow their systems value using large
displays and distributed visualization.
Also you can f ind out about our
successes in two of the fastest
growing countries in the world, India
and China, where we have been
present for several years and are well
respected as a partner for the local
industry. You will also learn about
some not so common control room
concepts in a real global industry like
the automotive industry where Barco
is contributing to the business in more
ways than our traditional simulation
and design systems. Featured will be
Barco’s design services for control
rooms supporting end-customers in
making the right decision on the
technologies used for their control
centers.
The newsletter starts with one of the
most interesting projects of recent
years, which proved Barco capabilities
to lead a purely visualization project
taking charge of a refurbishment of a
mimic diagram of one of the largest
oil producers in the world. Barco used
all its skills and knowledge to provide
the most economical solution giving
the customer maximum performance,
ergonomics, best viewing quality,
versatility and the most useful human
machine interface in the industry.
I hope you enjoy this issue of

be delighted to hear from you.
Dear reader,
Welcome to the 3rd issue of the
ControlZone newsletter, dedicated to
process visualization solutions in the
utilities and process control markets.
This is one of the key vertical markets
for the Barco Control Rooms division
where new approaches and
technologies continue to lead the way
users visualize complex systems. This
market includes also the automation
industries and is growing on a global
basis.
It is a very broad market covering
businesses areas such as power,
water and gas utilities to automotive
and logistic processes. Within these
The video wall is thelargest used in thehydrocarbon and power industry. "The map-board information isdisplayed in a global format, which iseasy to view at all times, and thisallows us to quickly detect problemsbefore they reach a critical condition,"said PMT Senior Project Engineer SalehAl-Saikhan. "It also helps us find vitalinformation very quickly during fieldemergency situations."
The displayed image on the video wallis the controlling computer screendisplay. Operators can switch betweenmultiple displays, where each displayprovides additional useful information.
Representation of excellence andreliabilityThe new OCC video wall serves as anerve center for all Saudi Aramcooperations and displays allactivities in real-time. In short,it integrates the criticaloperations in oil, gas, shipping, pipelinesand refining thatdefine Saudi Aramco.
Jum'ah said that theOSPAS facil ity is asource of pride for SaudiAramco. "It has been one ofthe best representations of ourvalues of excellence and reliability,"he said."This project is a significant step in ourcorporation's continuous efforts to bebest-in-class and to provide anunmatched level of reliability to ourcustomers in the Kingdom andoverseas."
In September 2005, president and CEOAbdallah S. Jum’ah started a new erafor the Operation Coordination Centerof OSPAS Aramco introducing the useof a large real-time data wall. Theimpressive curved row of video screens- totaling 67 meters in length andthree meters in height - is divided intofive sections, each representing amajor area of the company operations:• Refined Product Network• Terminal Planning and Scheduling• Crude Network• Gas and NGL Network• Electric Power Distribution
The Operations Coordination Center(OCC) is part of Saudi Aramco's OilSupply Planning and Scheduling(OSPAS) Department . "OSPAS is acentral planning organization thatmanages and optimizes hydrocarbonsystem capacities and inventories todeliver quality products to thecustomer at the right time and rightplace, with maximum net revenue toSaudi Aramco," said OSPAS ManagerAdel H. Al-Dossary.

From data to informationAramco’s drive to perfect visualization of data
Oil rules the world, knowledge makes it happen. Aramco is the largest producer in
the world of crude oil and literally every second that the pumps are not working it
costs millions of dollars, so Aramco needs to ensure that the pumps never stop
bringing up the black gold. It is for this reason that a great vision is required to
control and monitor this process. The operations group of Aramco has this vision.
The previous display system composed of tiledmap-boards with LED readouts

• More than 3000 real-time data points• 50x3 OVERVIEW CDR+ 67-DL modules• 50 x TRANSFORM A18• APOLLO management software
The video wall can also displayinformation from several systems, suchas an e-map, drawing managementsystems, real-time control systems, andlive video from sources such as plantsurveillance cameras.
Very clear symbols and colors show therelationship between the refining, shipping, and oil and gas operations.
This flexibility allows the control centerto closely monitor every activity alongthe control chain of Saudi Aramco'shydrocarbons. There are thousands ofremote terminals that monitorhydrocarbon activity and relay data tothe OCC . In addition, OCC staff
members are inconstant contact withemployees at plants, refineries, gas-oilseparation plants(GOSP’s) terminalsand elsewhere.
Barco, together withtheir local partnerSamir PhotograpicProducts in Jeddah, were chosen for theimplementation ofthe new visualizationtool.
The reason for the choice was Barco’svast experience in visualizationtechnology and the proven track recordwith large size projects combined withSamir Photographic’s local strongpresence in the Kingdom.
The challengesAramco was looking for a visualizationpartner who would help them to lift uptheir visualization tool without touchingtheir existing automation software, andthen possibly integrate other tools toimprove the situational awareness ofthe different operators in the room. The challenge was three fold. Firstly, itwas about the physical aspects ofhaving a seamless display wall fromfloor to ceiling and wall to wall in acurved setting, covering more than 210square meters that needs to run for 24hours, 7 days a week in the mostreliable way. Secondly, this wallcontains more than 196.5 million ofdiscrete pixels that need to be drivenin a controlled and correct way. Thethird and final chal lenge was thecontent on the wall itself. It needed to visualize hundreds of datapoints real-time in a single processview aggregating different legacysystems covering hundreds of datapoints and visualizing themdynamically, while integrating video.

technology in the workplace, the OCC's operations are more

Aramco was looking for a way tocreate a common and unified view ofthe different operations within theroom in order to improve the look andergonomics of the visualization. Barcoalso took the opportunity to improvethe efficiency of the real-timeprocessing needed to run and showthe applications.
Barco created an extension to theirwall management software knownas APOLLO. This application is generatingan aggregated view designed to coverthe total large display and provides theoperators the overview they need withthe capability to zoom into some of thedetails, such as valves or pumps.Barco’s scoop is purely a monitoringfunction and uses its API together witha single graphic (SVG) to visualize thestatus and data coming out of SCADA ,DCS and historian databases.
Physically fitting a 50x3 seamlessdisplay wall in the existing room wasnot easy as the room had to stayoperational. The large display wallconsists of 150 OVERVIEW CDR67-DLmodules with SXGA resolution, dividedover 5 logical displays. From left toright they are organized as follows: theelectric power distribution has a 8x3matrix, the crude oil network a 13x3matrix, the gas and NLG network a13x3, the terminal planning andscheduling a 8x3 and the refinedproduct network another 8x3.
Every logical display shows a differentgraphical application and is driven by aseparate Barco graphic controller, being the TRANSFORM A with Raid 5 andOMNIBUS with each 2 Quad Video and 2Dual RGB insertion cards.

Immediate troubleshooting &disturbance recoveryThe network control center is like aspider's web – al l information isgathered there. If the power fails atany location, fast fault detection, isolation and service restoration isessential. Today's technology helps tovisualize the sometimes complexscenarios. The error location, which hasbeen identified by the control system,is clearly visualized. The defectiveequipment is isolated from the healthynetwork either by remote control or byfield crews working under instructionof the control center.
Tandem workplacesThe distribution management centerconsists of four control rooms. Each oneis responsible for a part of the 10-, 20-and 30-kV medium voltage network. The four control rooms share a singlecontrol system, therefore any locationcan be controlled out of any controlroom. Network control and monitoring –around the clockOne of the most important tasks of thecontrol center is the continuousmonitoring of the networks and theircontrol. This process is carried out bytwo procedures. The strategy is to“control central ly – act local ly“,therefore the 4,000 square kilometersarea is controlled from the centralcontrol room ZNL, while field crewscarry out the work. The ZNL monitors and controls thecurrent power flow as well as thevoltage in the distribution network.Overloads and limit violations areimmediately corrected by appropriatemeasures, such as reconfiguring thenetwork . system provides redundancy at theweakest spot – the lamps. Therefore, alamp failure will not result in any lossof image.
High performance and future proofsecurity conceptThe technically innovative networkmanagement of the ZNL includes anelaborate security design. A distributedmultiprocessor system provides thenecessary redundancy.
This system is set up at two locations. In case of a loss at the Esslingencontrol room, the operations can betaken over by the second location atany time.
The security concept includes also thecommunication between the ZNL andthe substations. Redundant network connections usingindependent routes are provided at thislevel.
Today's technical capabilities allow fiveolder network control centers to bemerged into the ZNL , ensuringmaximum efficiency. The benefits arethe increased availability of the powersupply to the customers and reducedcosts.
The other four distribution controlcenters of EnBW Regional AG in Baden-Wuerttemberg – Oehringen, Wiesloch,
Tuttlingen and Ravensburg – will collectthe information in databases and relaythe data to the ZNL. Looking to thefuture, a structural reform is planned. The 110-Kilovolt high voltage networkis presently controlled from Esslingen,Daxlanden with Karlsruhe and Engstlattwith Balingen, and may be mergedinto the control center in Esslingen.

Saar Ferngas AG is a gas supplycompany located in Saarbrücken. Viaan efficient transportation networkapproximately 1750 km long withapproximately 400 interchange pointsand an underground gas storage, 50power suppliers, 20 industrialcompanies and power stations aresupplied with natural gas in a deliveryarea of approx. 13.200 km2.
Future-proof architectureIn the middle of 2004 the existingcontrol system from 1990 was replacedby a modern PC-based system. Anopen and flexible architecture willguarantee the versatility of the systemand abil ity to meet futurerequirements of the enterprise. SaarFerngas AG chose the control systemCS7 from Siemens. From twoworkplaces two dispatchers supervisethe entire gas network and control thegas delivery according to existingcontracts with suppliers and customersoptimally. Additional ly, externalnetworks and the head officeinfrastructure are all supervized and allinquiries taken up outside of thenormal office hours.
Siemens’ approach for efficient visualization solutionsDuring the last 30 years of cooperation with the different divisions of the Siemens
AG, Barco Control Rooms’ display walls have been coupled with nearly all of the
control and automation systems from Siemens. The result is hundreds of installations
world-wide in which the systems of Siemens and Barco display walls form the
efficient and ergonomic human machine interface around the clock. In order to
ensure that these solutions fulfill all requirements for maximum satisfaction,
integration possibilities and interaction concepts are often harmonized and tested
between the development departments of Siemens and Barco even before the order
is placed. The advantage of this close co-operation for the customer became obvious
with two very interesting projects in the gas and water industry, in which Siemens
CS7 and Barco’s display walls were combined to efficient visualization solutions.

The Wasserwerke Westfalen GmbHoperates eight water works in specialwater protection zones along the Ruhr.Annually more than 100 million cubicmeters of drinking water of highquality are prepared by artif icialground-water recharge with surfacewater from the Ruhr.
The water works, including fourhydroelectric power plants whichsupply the energy for the waterextraction, are supervised andcontrolled from the central controlroom in the Wasserwerke Hengsen inSchwerte. Additionally the monitoringand control, the process control systemSIWA-PAS CS7 developed by Siemensfor the water industry, takes over thearchiving and preparation of the datafor the processes of the waterproduction, preparation and distribution.
Personal display wallsThe control room is equipped with twoworkplaces arranged next to eachother, which specialize during normaloperation in the sub processes waterextraction and water production. Eachdisplay wall shows the same range ofinformation. Each workplace isequipped with monitors and a 3x2OVERVIEW mDG50 display wall, on whicheach operator can display overviewand situation-specific detailsindependently.
If required each of the two operatorscan also gain an overview on the subprocess visible on the neighboringdisplay wall and even intervene. Eachoperator can switch his local mouseand keyboard to each of the twodisplay walls. The personal display wallthereby becomes the commonoverview wall and remains so duringthe one-man operation with full accessfor the remaining operator.
Fast information accesses bylayoutsAs with the previous project , inaddition to the overviews of the subprocesses and the detail pictures fromthe CS7 system, video signals can bedisplayed. These video signals anddetailed pictures do not remainpermanently visible on the wall, butare only displayed on demand. Sincethis situation-specific information isfrequently needed very fast and in thecorrect combination, layouts wereprovided, which take over this task. With a single click several video signalsand/or pictures from further computersystems, which are integrated withSIWA-PAS CS7, can be displayed andautomatically arranged in the pre-configured arrangement. By continuallyusing the same arrangement of theinformation it is also guaranteed thatwindow contents can be assigned fastand free of errors.

Large display network overviewOptimal overview and fast reaction aremade possible with a Barco displaywall, which replaces the existingmosaic wall. For the display wall aspecial overview of the transportationnetwork was developed, whichensures a fast diagnosis of the networkstatus and possible disturbances. Itsown CS7 Client controls the displaywall, so that besides the networkoverview all other details, developedfor monitors, can be displayed. To facilitate this, two dispatchers areable to work on the display wall andaccess all available information withthe mouse and keyboard by means ofthe so-cal led "remote pointer"function. Pictures for monitors anddisplay wall are maintained by theoperator by means of the picture editorof WinCC, the visualization system ofCS7.

Products and systems forinformation technology
PSI develops and integrates software solutions for challenging tasks in network,
production and information management. As a control systems software
producer in the German-speaking market, their core business consists of
providing control systems for energy suppliers, industry and public institutions.
Through customer, they acquired a unique know-how from customers’ value-
added processes. This is an interview with Dr. Adams.
Throughout your professional life youseem to be a pioneer and missionary. Why this drive?I love challenges. This was the reasonwhy I joined in 2003 PSI AG. The PSIManagement had the plan to start anew business, offering large-scalecontrol systems for the manufacturingindustry. Today I am CEO of the businessunit called “PSI-Manufacturing”, withfirst successful projects at Volkswagen.Other opportunities are in theautomotive industry , mining and road-traffic applications. The commonheadline of these projects can becharacterized by: “Monitoring and controlof (geographically) distributedautomation systems”.
PSI AG When did the company PSI AG startand what is in brief its history?PSI was founded in 1969 and enteredthe business of large scale control
systems in 1974. In 1994 PSI became astock oriented company and wasregistered on the German StockExchange in 1998, now listed in thePrime Standard. Today we employ 1.100people. The revenue in fiscal year 2004was 115.2 million Euro. There are threemain fields of activities: networkmanagement, production managementand information management.
Could you give me some details ofthe focus and the main products inthese business fields? In the field of network management wedevelop software for energy, telecommunications and transportcompanies. As the market leader incontrol systems for transmission anddistribution of electrical energy, gas andoil we count almost all the majorGerman and international energyproviders amongst our customers. Wealso provide solutions for maintenancemanagement, network utilization, retail
and sales. When deregulation started inGermany, PSI was one of the first toprovide systems for trading electricalenergy and natural gas. In the telecommarket we offer products and servicesfor network and service management, infrastructure, customer care and billing. Our offerings for transport companiesinclude control system applications fortransport systems and transportoperations and cover all areas ofoperations from the maintenance andstorage facility up to routing and station.
PSI-Manufacturing, supplies solutions forproduction management, logistics andsupply chain management. WithPSImcontrol we monitor and control themajor processes, integrating all involvedsystems, being third party and PSIsystems. PSIPENTA offer solutions formid-size manufacturing industries andwith PSI-BT we are market leader inproduction planning systems for steelindustry.
I13
Last but not least there is the field ofinformation management. We enablepublic authorities and service providersto offer proactive services to citizens orcustomers.
This is an impressive number ofactivities. Do you see special growthareas, both in markets as well asgeographically? A number of our activities belong tolarge scale civil infrastructures. Besidesthe need of maintaining theseinfrastructures there are also legalimplications coming from nationalauthorities. So there are two mainstreams generating new business: dueto deregulation and privatization ofinfrastructural activities, the companiesinvolved have to care for efficiency incost and operations – to achieve thegoals, they invest in appropriate IT-systems; and there are a number ofcountries which are on the way toimprove or even establish thementioned infrastructures. One of themost impressive examples in Asia isChina. By opening two offices in China,we already paid attention to theupcoming chances there. Anotheranswer to the growing internationalchallenges is PSI-CNI, a 100% PSIcompany, focussing on the markets inEurope and world-wide.
One of the recent systems put intooperation is the TNB-project in KualaLumpur, Malaysia (Tenaga NasionalBerhad). Three existing control centerswere replaced by one single controlcenter with PSIcontrol and Barcodisplays.
But there is also growth by innovation. Two years ago we finalized a majorstudy in the automotive industry andstarted to market a solution namedPSImcontrol. The innovative part with
PSImcontrol is to offer the manufacturingindustry the possibility to have acomprehensive view on the processes.
To put it into a nutshell: we turn datainto information and information intoknowledge. The people involved are ourmain focus, not the “automatedprocedures”.
Visualization parts Marcus, you mentioned visualization.Where do you see the importance ofvisualization in the automotive ormanufacturing market?Above all, visualization is not limited tocertain markets. Man is a visual-orientedbeing. But there is indeed a certainimportance of a new quality ofvisualization in the automotive and othermanufacturing markets. The new qualityis what I just named “thecomprehensive view”. Today there are a number of systems, specialized in certain tasks like survey ofmachinery, monitoring stock levels, tracking quality data etc. The results arenumerous single data, single views – noinformation integration!
There is no doubt: the specializedsystems will remain and continue toremain, due to better handling andmaintainability. But the data theyproduce should be integrated and putinto relation to each other. Graphicalrepresentation of information offers thebest access for the responsible people.Besides being able to see “The Factoryat a Glance” the operators are able tosee trends and tendencies. This is a veryimportant precondition of the very oftenrequired acting “proactively”!
In which other markets is a largedisplay a real added value?I will give an impressive example on
which PSI is working currently:Representatives of the mining industrywere looking for better maintenancesolutions. Since the working conditions“underground” are not the mostcomfortable ones, they were looking fora solution offering different views onvarious aspects, inclusive thegeographical view on what is exactlywhere and what the best access is to adevice to be repaired. Starting from the maintenance point-of-view, we are working on integrating fourdifferent mining control rooms into one:the underground mining process, theconveyor system, the ventilation andunderground air conditioning andwater/waste-water/power infra-structure. All four aspects are vital forthe safe operation of mines.
In all examples mentioned here –automotive, manufacturing, mining - theadded value of large screen displays isat least twofold – besides being a veryrepresentative installation. Firstly, there is the possibility to monitoran operation as an entity. Secondly, and very important in themanufacturing industry, there is theteam-oriented approach. There is nosingle factory where the different tasksare is concentrated on one singleperson. The tasks belong to differentdepartments with their ownresponsibilities and costs. Hence large screen displays are one ofthe most appropriate MMI-solutions youcan offer for a multi-disciplinary team ofpeople. This is not science fiction – this isreality!
Dr. Adams, thank you very much for theinteresting discussion. I want to wish allthe best in business and I am sure thatPSI and Barco will enjoy more mutualsuccesses in the future.

Control room design services Sharing knowledge of Barco’s experience in control room visualization
It is common to introduce the idea of ergonomics, and the importance of the human
factor, by referring to one of a number well publicized disasters in which major loss
of life and great commercial costs occurred – from Flixborough to Bhopalfrom Three
Mile Island to Chernobyl, from Piper Alpha to Ladbroke Grove. It seems the only way
to emphasize the importance of an ergonomical correct design of a system, being
this the automation or monitoring system in software or the design of a control
room. Implementing a large display wall is a great change into some of the
operations that most of our customers look for support in the design and
implementation of the control room ensuring the highest pay-back of their
investment. As Barco has a long track record in providing equipment into this arena,
we can pass on our knowledge and experience to our design team who share this
with our customers, being those consultants, integrators or end-users. For these
groups of people, Barco can provide specific concepts concerning the
implementation of visualization tools for control rooms. A very strong return for
Barco is the input from the design team on their experience with ergonomics into
the product management, learning about the real needs for the product
development.
Product drawingsBarco provides product drawings withoverall physical dimensions like heightand weight in a very early stage of theproject so that customers can integratethe product in the most efficient way. Also considered are maintenance andservice areas, cooling paths, connectionareas, wire connections, etc.
Implementation drawingsBased on the customer’s control roomsdrawings, we will make an assessmentof the room and integrate the displaywall in the best way or even in theposition specified by the customer. Anyremarks from our side on theergonomical correctness or usability ofthe wall wil l be reported to thecustomer. As Barco draws everything in3D, we have an advantage of creatingdifferent views from different points. Inthat way, we can point to any possibleobstacle in the viewing line of theoperators. At this stage, we can alsouse our 3D data to render an animatedwalk through, giving the customer anextra visualization tool of their project.
Control room designIn the latest category, Barco wil lprovide support with the design of thetotal control room and can even help inspecifying or assessing the building forthe control room. At this stage, Barcouses a methodology that is looking tothe past, present and future of thecorporation and control room so that agood program can be implemented. Inthis case, Barco can take the designlead if this is requested by thecustomer.
Deliverables can go from a completecontrol room concept to shop drawingsand as-build drawings. In this case, theexpertise of Barco will not only belimited to the visualization technologybut wil l expand to the use of thecorrect lighting, the acoustics of theroom, the circardian aspects of theergonomics in a 24/7 room, themarketing side of the room, plus manyother factors.
CategoriesBarco’s services can be positioned in 3categories which depend on theproject size, project constellation andexpertise needed. Barco brings extra
knowledge about the latesttechnologies inside control rooms willnever replace an architect or consultantinside a project but will work withthem to provide the best solution.

Expertise and project knowledge
Designing control rooms is aboutconverging different expertises intoone project. This includes interior andoffice design to lightplan and workanalysis. Barco does not have all theexpertise in house but has built up,over the years, a network of specialiststhat can be part of the team whenrequired. We have access to a lot ofcase studies and installations such asthe design of the WHO situation room(Switzerland), the Asian Games(Qatar), Traffic Wales (UK), ShanghaiSecco (China) and many others.
Workshops and benchmark
As Barco wants to share its knowledgeinside a control room project as muchas possible, we are using formats to dothis in the most efficient way. One ofthe formats is the deep dive workshop. This is a one day workshop at thecustomer’s site focusing on the controlroom concept. It generates a lot ofidea’s on control room design. The goalis to have a representative of all thestakeholders in the project, includingthe sponsors, the operators, the projectmanagers, the facility managers, thearchitects, and possibly many others. Having these people in the sameworkshop facil itates shortcommunication lines and fast decisions
on key aspects, and will provide theparticipants with an overall view onthe scope of the project and itsboundaries. Second part of theworkshop is a benchmark of controlroom designs and pictures. The resultof this workshop is a written reportabout the design requirements for thecontrol room / center including 1 or 2concepts for the control room design aswell as some general specifications.

There are clear strategies set by governments to keep up with investments needed
to grow GDP at the rate they want to. Dealing with legacy systems in Europe and the
USA does not always speed up investment and technology growth. In emerging
economies, the infrastructure is built almost from a new blue print, allowing newer
concepts and technologies to be used. The next two cases show that these new
visualization concepts improve the overall efficiency of the transmission operations.
Situational awareness is improved by replacing the semi-static overview picture of a
mosaic will with a real dynamic projection wall using dynamics in color changes,
animations, dynamic lay-out changes depending on the real time situation. The two
examples shown here are the National grid in the UK, with help of Barco’s partner
TEW showing GE’s EMS system 21xA and PLN in Indonesia, using Siemens EMS
system Telegyr.
National Grid (NG) dispatches andtransmits electricity currently generatedby over 128 generators to supplierswho meet the demands of over 28million customers throughout Englandand Wales.Since April 2005 NG have expandedtheir operation to include Scotland andthis has necessitated an upgrade andexpansion of the existing facilities tomonitor and track the usage ofelectricity.
Barco acknowledges TEW’s expertiseand considers TEW a prime utilitypartner in the UK. The fundamentalstrength of TEW is the ability to provideclients with a total solution and this isone of the key reasons they wereselected by the National Grid for thisproject. Their total solution approach ismade possible with in-house facilitiesthat cover al l aspects of design, manufacture, testing, installation, commissioning and training. TEW arealso able to provide a lifetime ofsupport and solution upgrades and thishas certainly been of benefit toNational Grid over the years. Barco Control Rooms division extensiveexperience within the utility andprocess control industry extends farbeyond the provision of the display. Aswell as working closely with TEW onthe implementation of this project,Barco is also able to provide an allembracing on going support servicedirectly to NG. Richard Spencer, Chief Executive at TEWstated “We get particular satisfactionfrom turnkey projects such as the oneat the National Grid where we have theopportunity and privilege to work witha long term customer and provide themwith a technology refresh and developand expand their facilities to meetfuture needs.” Spencer continued “TheNational Grid were very confident withthe Barco solution following visits toother Barco customers and thecustomer center in Belgium makingBarco and TEW the perfect combinationfor them”.
TEW were awarded the contract toinstall a new and dynamic Barcodisplay solution that would enable theNG to extend their coverage to includeScotland. TEW Engineering Ltd providesa unique combination of experienceand capabilities in the provision ofcontrol and information systemsthroughout the world. TEW havespecialized in the control roomenvironment for the last thirty yearsand are widely recognized as a marketleader for the design, manufacture andinstallation of systems for a widevariety of market sectors.

Work on site commenced in September2004 with the provision of a temporaryscreen being installed in front of theexisting mimic wall and two Barcoprojectors were used to provide acontinuous display of the networkstatus. The extensive work involvedremoving the original equipment andbuilding of the new wall and duringthis time the control room remained infull 24/7 operation negating the needfor any operators to be re-located. Thiswas a significant factor to the NationalGrid.
Before the new wall could be built TEWundertook an ergonomic review of theroom and decided that the new wallshould, in fact, be slightly curved. Thecurved wall had implications on theroom infrastructure and design andmeant quite a few changes to thebuilding layout that TEW eagerlyundertook , again, causing minimaldisruption to the operation of theroom.
The new display wall comprises of 40(10x4) Barco OVERVIEW 67” rear-projection cubes with dual lamptechnology and SXGA resolution - 1280x 1024 pixels. The total wall resolutionis 12800 x 4096 pixels.
The JCC is located in Gandul, a suburbof Jakarta. As the national controlcenter, it is responsible for monitoringand controlling the interconnected500KV transmission grid within Java-Bali as well as maintaining theinterconnected grid frequency stability. The JCC also monitors the 150kV and70kV networks that fall under theoperational jurisdiction of four areacontrol centers within Java, via inter-control center links. The peak load inthe Java-Bali control area was recordedat 14821MW.The Java-Bali Control Center projectreplaces the existing VAX VMS basedElenas (Cegelec/Areva) SCADA EMSwith the latest SUN-platform basedSINAUT Spectrum SCADA EMS 4.4 toprovide the following critical real-timeoperation functions:• Supervisory control and data
acquisition to collect and control real-time data from 400 high voltagesubstations across Java-Bali.
• Data archiving and reporting toprovide long term archiving andretrieval facilities for critical historicaldata.
• Automatic generation control tocalculate generation MW correction toregulate the grid frequency to 50Hzand to monitor the system MW andMVAr reserves.
• Network analysis and optimization tocalculate and analyze the networkload flow in normal and contingencycases; and to provide control settings

station Java-Bali control center system
to achieve generation cost andnetwork security optimization.
• Dispatcher training simulator toprovide a replica of the real-timesystem in a simulation environmentfor training new dispatchers and tosimulate various normal andcontingency operational scenarios.
The hardware and software systemwas factory implemented and tested atSEMIS Singapore in 2004. It has beencommissioned on-site where real-timeconnections to all 500kV, 150kV and70kV stations within the Java-Balinetwork have been tested. The newsystem has gone live to take over thereal-time operational Java-Bali ControlSystem in August 2005.

CLP (Hong Kong)Barco provides total flexible solution for China Light and Power
China is for a lot of companies known for its big opportunities as well for its unknown
business culture. Not for Barco, as Barco has been present in China for decades,
through partners as well with local offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong
Kong and other provinces. Barco is recognized as a strong brand for large display
solutions in different markets, especially in the utilities market. Because China has
the chance of building the energy infrastructure almost from scratch, the power
generation companies take care to use technologies that are top tier and ready for
the long term operations. As a result, Barco has been included in several key projects
like the famous Three Gorges dam project, where we have provided display wall
systems inside several control rooms. The focus and dedication of our Chinese sales
people and partners result in very nice and impressive projects like the System
Control Centre of ‘China Light and Power’. This impressive site is key in the growth of
a major city in China, being Hong Kong. CLP was going through a major
refurbishment including merging from the existing mosaic board to a real dynamic
display when they approached Barco for its help and support.
The display wall system inside theArea Supply and Power Grid ControlRoomBarco, the expert for providing completeturnkey solution for control rooms, hasreceived the order to replace the mosaic-based map boards inside the Area SupplyControl Room, Power Grid Control Roomand the System Operation TrainingSimulator Room of CLP Power’s SystemControl Center at Tai Po. Barco will alsoinstall a new display wall system insidethe Backup System Control Center locatedin Sha Tin. Barco combines its knowledgein mechanics, optics, electronics andergonomic designs into a comprehensivedisplay system. In turn this will ensureexcellent performance for CLP Power’sSystem Control Centre and enable CLP tomonitor the EMS, DMS and othergraphical information of CLP Power in24/7 operations. This project consists of59 rear projection modules in total. TheArea Supply Control Room was equippedwith a Barco display wall system solutioncomprising of 8 x 3 67” rear-projectionmodules. The Power Grid Control Roomwas equipped with 7 x 3 67” rear-projection modules. The SystemOperation Training Simulator Room wasequipped with 4 x 2 50” rear-projectionmodules and the Backup System ControlCenter was equipped with 3 x 2 50” rearprojection modules. All the Barco displaywall systems are controlled by Barco’shigh performance controllers.

Video use in utility andprocess control centersMixing graphical and textual data information with video information is
also becoming common practice in an automation environment as a
picture says more than a thousands words. Following are some of the
more obvious reasons.
Verification of sensor behaviorWith the use of camera’s pointedtowards critical components in theprocess like switches, transformers, water in/outlets, it is possible to havea remote view on the cause beforepeople are dispatched to check it. Thisincreases the speed of the sensorbehavior reaction.
Clarify safety clearanceAfter maintenance work has beendone when part of the grid has beendisconnected from power, there is aneed to ensure that nobody is aroundbefore that part is going back intooperation. This is usually done overradio communication but a visual checkfrom the control room can give thefinal security approval to start theprocess again.
Remote CommunicationWhen a remote crew is on site to fix aproblem, camera images can bedispatched to several remote expertsto show the parts that need to bereplaced or researched. Using this onedirection visualization tool and thetelephone/radio as audible commu-nication, it is possible to takeadvantage of the existing infrastructureto have an efficient video conferencetool. Experts in the control room canthen easily support the crew in thefield to make the correct choices androot causes be detected moreefficiently in multiple faults or in reallyremote and spread out power grids.

Security and asset surveillanceThe most obvious use of cameras is forasset surveil lance but how is theinformation of property intrusion andor violent attack being used from thecontrol room? How does it affectoperations?• When it is obvious that it was an
attack, there is an understanding thatthe crew that will be dispatched needto have a security .
• It is also proven when there is aterrorist attack on the power or waternetwork, in most cases this won’t bean isolated attack as the objective ofthe terrorists is to take out completeparts of the operations. With this inmind, precaution has to be taken innext steps of recovery.
• The control room is usually the placewhere the calls come in after anydisturbance so correct reporting is

Control room solutions for
Traffic Management CentersThe challenge in traffic management has traditionally been one of flow control.
From managing trains to port vessel traffic tracking to airspace management to car
traffic, Barco’s visualization solutions have excelled in providing the control centers
of such operations with three key operational enhancements.
Operational enhancements provided byBarco’s visualization are as follows:• Large display overviews for
collaboration of operators and toanalyze and track complex systemsresponses
• Visual integration platform tosimultaneously view different signaltypes from disparate sub-systems(e.g. CCTV and Traffic Sensors)
• Universal digital streaming media forinter-jurisdictional information sharing
Traffic management is morecomplicated than traditional processflow management because there areindependent ‘actors’ involved (e.g.drivers who can make their owndecisions). Therefore, to manage andoptimize such systems is necessary tohave a very good representation of thesystem and to be able to have tools tointeract and manage its responses. Intraffic management , the controlcenters rely on Barco’s solutions to
visualize their complex systems andmix the signals from various differentsensors to generate a consistent andup to date overview of their currentsituation.
The control centers worked well whentheir systems were small and stoodalone in their operations. As theirsystems grew both in scale and scope, once independent control centers nowhave to interact with each other toensure proper and efficient operations. For example, the traffic light systemsof two adjacent cities meeting up atthe city limits. Scope increases can beseen in the need to coordinateinteractions of passengers from trainswith the taxi system and thus impact

Secondly, Barco’s networkedvisualization solutions have developedtools to interconnect various overviewdisplays to one another as well as tooperator workstations to enable directinter and intra control roomcommunications of graphical and videodisplays. This allows one control centerto see what the other sees verbatim. With this, the operators and decisionmakers can save time oncommunications (e.g. ‘a picture isworth a thousand words’) and mayeven generate new perspectives onthe issues of concern (e.g. extra ideasor better resource deployment).
In traffic management , Barco’svisualization solutions are designed toenable the once independent controlrooms to collaborate and interact toensure that the overall system cancontinue to expand and interoperatesmoothly both in scale (size) andscope.
the flow of traffic roads, or of containerships and trucks on highwaysapproaching the ports, and mostobviously of security concerns inairports with road traffic around thearea. Therefore, as the scope and scaleexpands, inter-control communicationswil l be vital in maintainingcoordination and effectivemanagement.
To this end, Barco’s networkedvisualization capabilities are designedto enhance interoperability. Barco’ssolutions achieve this with two keycapabilities. The first is the UniversalDecoder which allows each controlcenter the ability to view (primarilyvideo) signals directly from otherjurisdictions provided they have theconnections. This enables directinformation sharing, as well as servesas a backup between control centers inthe event that one of them isimmobilized (e.g. evacuated ordamaged).

Get your legacy screensinto the big picture
Using the latest technology in streaming media, Barco allows older
legacy workstation and servers to be visualized over a wide range of
screens into a network. The hardware solution puts an RGB encoder
between workstation and monitor and allows even remote keyboard
and mouse control over the same IP network.
With Barco’s transform SCN, any computer graphics source can be
transported over an IP network without the need for extra software
installation on the computing platform. This allows better security,
requires less processing power and provides remote viewing of the
graphical source.
