Control Systems
A good control system should:– be flexible so managers can respond as needed– provide accurate information about the
organization– provide information in a timely manner
![Page 7: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

8-8
Types of Control
• Feedforward Control– Control that allows managers to anticipate
problems before they arise• Concurrent Control
– Give managers immediate feedback on how efficiently inputs are being transformed into outputs so that managers can correct problems as they arise
![Page 9: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Types of Control
• Feedback Control– Control that gives
managers information about customers’ reactions to goods and services so that corrective action can be taken if necessary

Financial Measures of Performance
• Profit ratios– Measures of how
efficiently managers convert resources into profits
– return on investment (ROI).
• Liquidity ratios– Measures of how well
managers protect resources to meet short term debt—current and quick ratios.
8-12
![Page 13: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Financial Measures of Performance
• Leverage ratios– Measures of how much
debt or equity is used to finance operations—debt-to-asset and times-covered ratios.
• Activity ratios– Measures of how
efficiently managers are creating value from assets—inventory turnover, days sales outstanding ratios.
8-13
![Page 14: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
8-14
Organizational Goals
• Goals should be specific and difficult, but not impossible, to achieve (stretch goals).
• Goal setting and establishing output controls are management skills that are developed over time.
![Page 15: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

intend to allocate and use resources– Resources are controlled by managers in order to
attain organizational goals effectively & efficiently– Each division is evaluated on its own budgets for
cost, revenue or profit
![Page 17: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

8-20
1-Direct Supervision
Managers who:• Actively monitor and observe the behavior of
their subordinates• Teach subordinates the behaviors that are
appropriate and inappropriate• Intervene to take corrective action as
needed
![Page 21: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
8-21
2-Management by Objectives
• Management by Objectives (MBO)– A goal-setting process in which managers and
subordinates negotiate specific goals and objectives for the subordinate to achieve and then periodically evaluate their attainment of those goals
![Page 22: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
8-22

system of rules and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that shape the behavior of divisions, functions, and individuals.
8-23
![Page 24: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
8-24
3-Bureaucratic Control
Problems with Bureaucratic Control• Rules easier to make than discarding them,
leading to bureaucratic “red tape” and slowing organizational reaction times to problems
• Firms become too standardized and lose flexibility to learn, to create new ideas, and solve to new problems
![Page 25: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

organization by shared values, norms, standards of behavior, and expectations
![Page 27: Control, Change and Entrepreneurship Chapter Eight Copyright © 2011 by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. McGraw-Hill/Irwin.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de85503460f94ae2787/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Adaptive vs. Inert Culture
• Adaptive Culture – Culture whose values
and norms help an organization to build momentum and to grow and change as needed to achieve its goals and be effective
• Inert Culture – Culture that leads to
values and norms that fail to motivate or inspire employees
– Leads to stagnation and often failure over time
