The cold curing properties of the ContraFlame® JF120 passive fire protection
system allows direct application to process pipework and equipment.
Uses of ContraFlame® JF120
Hot risers
Hot three phase separators
Hot slug catchers
Under decks, insulation/
protection. Top deck protection
Flare stacks
Steel structures that are subject
to thermal shock, e.g. LNG plants
Process pipework and equipment
Resin Base JF120
Phenolic materials are widely used in
high temperature applications, such
as brake lining and heat shields, and
have excellent performance when
exposed to fire with regard to both
durability and low smoke or toxic
fume emissions.
Phenolic resin is the acknowledged
first choice resin system for elevated
temperature service conditions
and therefore Advanced Insulation
chose it as the base of the entire
ContraFlame® JF120 system.
Syntactic Phenolic Foam
The heart of the new ContraFlame®
JF120 system is the improved version
of our ContraFlame® C50 cold curing
syntactic foam. ContraFlame® C50 has
a closed cell structure, so it is highly
resistant to water permeation in the
event of any accidental damage and
exposure. Other advantages include:
Low cured density 270 -
330kgm-3
Low thermal conductivity of
0.05Wm-1K-1 at 25°C
Excellent fire stability
Wide service temperature range
from -196°C to 185°C
Low water absorption
Excellent impact resistance
Resistance to extreme thermal
shock (ΔT = 300°C in 10 minutes)
Excellent resistance to marine
environments.
Phenolic Laminate Topcoat
The ContraFlame® JF120 system
includes an all-phenolic two-part
topcoat developed by Advanced
Insulation. It comprises 3-5mm of
glass reinforced D2004 phenolic
resin system. This composite top
skin is applied to the surface of the
ContraFlame® C50 foam forming an
extremely robust outer skin with
high resistance to jet fire ablation.
The ContraFlame® JF120 system is
normally finished with a decorative
paint finish.
Both ContraFlame® C50 and D2004
are cold curing systems.

Corrosion Resistance
Phenolic resins have been used
in high performance corrosion
resistant coatings for many
years. ContraFlame® continues
this tradition by displaying
exceptional chemical resistance
to sea water, oils and solvents
as well as acids and other
aggressive chemicals.
Designed to Perform in Extreme Conditions
Fire Testing
In order to demonstrate the
reaction of ContraFlame® systems
to fire in terms of integrity and
smoke or fume emissions, the
systems have been extensively
tested in various modes in both
our in-house facilities as well as
at external locations.
Fire Laboratories
ContraFlame® JF120 system has
been exposed to the jet fire
resistance test (ISO: 22899 OTI
95634), the most aggressive and
demanding fire scenario, at the
HSE laboratory facility in Buxton
and at GL Noble Denton’s facility
in Spadeadam.
Jet Fire Performance
ContraFlame® JF120 system has
been tested for jet fire resistance
for both planar and tubular steel
structures and has been certified
by both Lloyds Register, DNV
and ABS.
The main function of jet fire
passive fire protection, such
as ContraFlame® JF120, is to
prevent the tensile strength
of the substrate material from
falling below the design stress
during elevated temperatures.
The permissible protection
time provided by passive fire
protection is limited by the
temperature rise produced during
the fire, superimposed on the
operating temperature of the
substrate at the start of the fire.
ContraFlame® JF120 has been
successfully tested for 120
minutes on planar steel and for
90 minutes on tubular steel at
a total application thickness of
34mm. In both tests the steel
temperature remained well
below the critical temperature of
400°C. Thickness of application
can be reduced to meet specific
levels of fire protection.

Jet Fire Resistance
This represents the most demanding condition by simulating a closed
vessel application. The test specimens in both cases also included a repair
joint through the full thickness of the ContraFlame® JF120 system enabling
certification of a system repair as well as the ‘as new’ condition.
The very low temperature rise associated with the ContraFlame® JF120
system makes possible operating temperatures as high as 185°C whilst
still ensuring safe substrate temperatures during the jet fire.
After the test, the ContraFlame®
JF120 system was found to be
substantially intact with the
remaining char being at least 70%
of the original system thickness.
The D2004 topcoat remained as
a protective skin over 95% of the
surface of the test piece.

of the coated steel surface and to aid adhesion during
application and service. The tie coat is applied with paint
rollers at WFT 150-300 microns.
ContraFlame® C50-400 layer is overall 75mm thick and
split into two separate applications of 35mm and 40mm
separated by an overnight cure and with a tie coat bonding
between each layer.
Additional half shell rings (15mm) are then bonded to the
existing 75mm half shell rings for the final layer of the
C50-700 grade.
The 3rd layer thickness of C50-700 foam is applied slightly
in excess of the half shell ring (15mm) and smoothed out
with the stainless steel rolling pin to achieve a concentric
finish to the specified overall thickness of 90mm.
The D2004 Laminate system consists of a combination of
5 layers of 450g/m2 Chopped Strand Mat, a single layer
of Silica Mat 600g/m2 and a double layer of 450g/m2
Biaxial woven cloth impregnated with the D2004 Phenolic
resin, followed by a resin flow coat to provide a resin rich
protective and aesthetic finish.
The complete ContraFlame® JF120-200 coating can be
coated with additional paint systems to meet specific
project colour codes. (optional)

ContraFlame® CSP and PFP
Key Features
The ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
System has been developed
to provide both cryogenic spill
protection and combined passive fire
protection. The system is quick and
easy to install because of the tile size
and shape, allowing integration with
decks in providing suitable coverage.
If damage to the tile occurs, the tile
can be easily replaced, minimising
maintenance time.
Material
ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
systems are made to order according
to the bespoke design specifications
of each
Typical Colour – Green and Brown
Typical Thickness – 34mm
The ContraFlame® CSP Tile/
Modular system is a dry fit
system with removable sections
The ContraFlame® CSP Tile/
Modular system is simple and
quick to apply only requiring
bonding with adhesive to fix
the tiles directly to the primed
deck. The relative simplicity of
the application process makes
ContraFlame® CSP Tile/ Modular
system an ideal material for
application using local labour
with suitable training and under
the supervision of AIC technicians
Construction
ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
System is a multi-functional
composite system based on unique
C50 phenolic syntactic foam and
phenolic reinforced laminate tiles.
The ContraFlame® C50 used as
the insulation foam inside the
tile is high performance syntactic
phenolic foam, designed and
manufactured by Advanced
Insulation
The ContraFlame® CSP Tile/
Modular System thickness is
34mm thick
ContraFlame® CSP Tile size is
0.5m x 1m
ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
System will be 16.2Kg per tile of
32.4Kg/m2
ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
System is a high performance
thermal insulation and fire
proofing system designed to
provide thermal insulation, jet
and hydrocarbon fire protection
and corrosion protection
Suitable for use at continuous
operating temperatures from
-40°C up to +150°C
Tested to withstand thermal
shock down to -196°C in LIN
spillage conditions
ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
System is impervious to water,
extremely robust and can
withstand chemical or acid spills
Typical Application
The ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
System is ideally suited for areas
where cryogenic spill potential is
high- particularly for FLNG loading
and offloading areas.
Design Criteria
Cryogenic Spill Protection -
ContraFlame® CSP Tile/Modular
system has been tested for a
cryogenic spill of LNG at -164°C
for a duration of 2 hours 50
minutes, limiting the back face
temperature of the steel to -28°C
thereby making it eminently
suitable for use on FLNG Projects.
Thermal Insulation – Interior and
vertical panelling.
Prevents Corrosion under
Insulation (CUI) and has excellent
performance in the marine
environment in terms of physical
properties, creep and fatigue
performance. The micro cellular
structure of syntactic foam C50
is derived from light weight
additives rather than through
blowing agents. This imparts a
closed cell structure of the C50
making it unaffected by water
even when fully immersed.
