Special exposed polymeric membrane stripsare provided on both sides for positive membrane-to-membrane adhesion in the overlap area. The membranestrips are protected by a pull-off release strip. All compo-nents of the MEL-ROL waterproofing system work to-gether to provide a cost-effective, positive waterproofingsystem that’s quick and easy to apply. The roll size of MEL-ROL is 38.5” (.98 m) wide x 60’ (18.29 m) long.

MEL-ROL LMMEL-ROL LM is a single-component, polymer-mod-ified, cold-applied,water-base, liquid water-proofing membrane idealfor below-grade verticalseamless waterproofing ap-plications. We have taken the same high quality rubberpolymers found in MEADOWS’ successful MEL-ROL “peeland stick” membrane, and converted them into a heavy-bodied, high solids, quick drying liquid membrane.

With MEL-ROL LM, installation time is reduced, utilizing ei-ther a spray or roller application. A variety of differentprotection courses, insulation boards or drainage boardscan be imbedded into the membrane to create a superiorwaterproofing system. PREMOULDED MEM-BRANE® VAPOR SEALWITH PLASMATIC®CORE (PMPC)PREMOULDED MEMBRANEVAPOR SEAL with PLAS-MATIC CORE (PMPC) is aseven-ply, weather-coated,permanently bonded, semi-flexible bituminous coreboard. PERMINATOR® PERMINATOR underslabvapor barrier is a new gen-eration of polyolefin-basedresin/chemical technology.PERMINATOR provides thevapor barrier industry witha highly effective, economi-

cal choice for helping to reduce the penetration of mois-ture and water vapor through the slab into the structure,thereby helping to reduce fungus, mildew and moldgrowth. PERMINATOR also helps reduce radon gas fromentering the structure.

PERMINATOR is tough enough to withstand normal con-struction jobsite conditions and traffic. It will not crack,puncture, snag, split, or tear easily.

of the roll and firmly press exposed area to the wall. Re-move the release paper from the rolls in a downward di-rection, pressing MEL-ROL into place on the wall.

Use DETAIL STRIP for impaction sheet coverage. First, foldstrips lengthwise and then cut at the fold. Material is thenready to install as 4 ½” (114.3 mm) strips on either side ofthe rebar. Any excess can be turned down on the face ofthe footing. Next, fill the voids around rebar in the keywaywith CATALYTIC BONDING ASPHALT. Pour the walls. InstallDETAIL STRIP horizontally along the wall where it meetsthe footing, placing half the material up the wall and theother half onto the footing. Extend the material 4 ½”(114.3 mm) beyond outside corners. Slit extended portionof DETAIL STRIP lengthwise. Place the horizontal flap outonto the footing and bend the vertical flap around thewall. (See Diagram A.) Repeat this procedure in the oppo-site direction as shown in Diagram B.

MEL-ROL can be applied to concrete, masonry surfaces,wood, insulated wall systems and metal. All substratesmust be clean, dry and free of all surface irregularities.

HORIZONTAL APPLICATION ... Remove release paper onedge, then position the MEL-ROL membrane. Pull balanceof release paper off, running the roll from low to highpoints, so all laps will shed water. Stagger end laps andoverlap all seams at least 2 ½” (63.5 mm). Apply a double-thickness of the MEL-ROL membrane over construction,control and expansion joints and over cracks greater than1/16” (1.59 mm) wide.

VERTICAL WALL APPLICATION ... Masonry walls may re-quire the application of a cementitious parge-coat. Allowthe parge-coat to dry before priming and applying MEL-

MEL-ROL MEL-ROL waterproofing system provides a cost-effectiveanswer to properly waterproof foundations, vertical wallsand below-grade floors in residential and commercial con-struction. It is equally effective for use as between-the-slab waterproofing on plaza decks, parking decks andstructural slabs. Use it as a waterproofing membrane toisolate mechanical and electronic rooms, laboratories,kitchens and bathrooms. MEL-ROL offers positive protec-tion when “wrapped around” major rapid transit, vehicular,utility and pedestrian tunnel projects.

Concrete should be cured at least 72 hours, be clean, dry,smooth and free of voids. Repair spalled areas; fill all voidsand remove all sharp protrusions.

Apply in dry, fair weather when the air and surface temper-atures are above 40° F (4° C). Do not apply to frozen con-crete. A low temperature version of MEL-ROL is availablefor applications with temperatures as low as 20° F (-7° C).

Prior to application, prime all surfaces to be covered inone working day with applicable MEL-PRIME primer. Un-covered, primed surfaces must be re-primed the next day.Follow all instructions and precautions shown on primercontainers.

A thorough inspection should be made before coveringand all necessary repairs made immediately. Tears and in-adequate overlaps should be covered with MEL-ROL ... slitfish-mouths and patch. Seal edges of all patches withPOINTING MASTIC. Where applicable, horizontal applica-tions can be flood-tested for 24 hours. All leaks should bemarked and repaired when membrane dries.

Protect the membrane on all vertical and horizontal instal-lations with the immediate application of PROTECTIONCOURSE if no drainage system is used, or MEL-DRAIN. Tosecure PROTECTION COURSE, use POINTING MASTIC as anadhesive, and/or physically attach at the top edge usingTERMINATION BAR. Backfilling should be done immedi-ately, using care and caution to avoid damaging the wa-terproofing application.

MEL-ROL LM MEL-ROL LM can be used on new and remedial water-proofing applications on concrete or masonry block sub-strates. Since the formula is water-based, MEL-ROL LM canalso be used on both ICFs and “green concrete” applica-tions.

All surfaces must be clean (free of coatings), free of frost,relatively smooth and structurally sound. Patch any bugholes, tie holes, large gaps or cracks with MEADOW-PATCH5 or MEADOW-PATCH 20 from W. R. MEADOWS. All looselaitance on the substrates, such as dirt, dust, loose stonesand debris, should be either swept or blown clean.

All shrinkage cracks less than 1/16” should be pre-treatedwith a 60-mil coat of MEL-ROL LM 6” (15 cm) wide. Allcracks greater then 1/16” should be pre-treated with DE-

ROL. When applied, the parge-coat will produce asmooth, uniform and well-bonded surface. Remove re-lease paper, then apply vertically in lengths approximately8’ (2.44 m) long over the top of the horizontal DETAILSTRIP at the footing. Overlap seams at least 2 ½” (63.5mm). Tightly butt edges of membrane and apply POINT-ING MASTIC in corner applications. (See Diagram C).

To the top terminations, apply POINTING MASTIC at least1/8” (3.18 mm) thick and 1” (25.4 mm) wide. As an option,TERMINATION BAR may be used to mechanically fastenthe membrane.

Once positioned, immediately hand-rub the MEL-ROLmembrane firmly to the surface, removing any bubbles orwrinkles, then pressure roll the complete surface to assurepositive adhesion.

Before MEL-ROL is applied, place a vertical DETAIL STRIPon inside corners extending the material 4 ½” (114.3 mm)beyond each side of the corner. (See Diagram D.) Termi-nate at the footing and finish the corner with POINTINGMASTIC.

Bend DETAIL STRIP vertically over the outside corner andextend 4 ½” (114.3 mm) beyond each side of the corner.Terminate the material at the footing. Finish the cornerwith POINTING MASTIC.

All protrusions should be sealed with two layers of mem-brane applied at least 6” (152.4 mm) in all directions. Sealall terminations with POINTING MASTIC. Around drains,apply two layers of MEL-ROL and put a bead of POINTINGMASTIC between the membrane and clamping rings andat all terminations, drains and protrusions. See ASTM D5898.

Apply the second coat after the first coat has dried (ap-proximately one to two hours).

HORIZONTAL APPLICATION … Contact your local W. R.MEADOWS sales office for specific recommendations.

Frequently inspect surface area with a wet mil gauge toensure desired consistent thickness is achieved. Poroussubstrates or masonry block walls may require additionalcoats to obtain desired thickness.

MEL-ROL LM is most effectively applied by using the GracoHydraMax 350 or the Graco GH833 Big Rig.

The Graco heavy-duty texture gun is recommended foruse with the following tips. For best results, use the 0.051”(Graco GHD551) heavy-duty switch tip. For spraying ofprimer coat, a smaller orifice tip such as the 0.035” (GracoGHD635) can be used. Tips should be reversible types foreasy clean out.

Cover vertical applications with PROTECTION COURSE,MEL-DRAIN or 10 mil PERMINATOR. On vertical surfaces,coverings can be imbedded into the membrane shortlyafter application.

If MEL-DRAIN is used with MEL-ROL LM, use plastic-backedMEL-DRAIN to prevent waterproofing membrane frombeing pushed into plastic core.

Allow 24 hours for complete cure of membrane prior tobackfilling.

MEL-ROL LM (ALL SEASON) MEL-ROL LM (ALL SEASON) can be used on new and reme-dial waterproofing applications on concrete or masonry

TAIL STRIP prior to application of the membrane. For spe-cific project recommendations, please contact W. R.MEADOWS technical services.

MEL-ROL LM is designed to be used from the pail or drumwith little or no mixing. However, if water appears on thesurface of the unit, thoroughly mix with a low speed me-chanical mixer prior to application.

To reduce blistering on concrete surfaces, a thin coat ofMEL-ROL LM diluted with water may be required. (Approx-imate dilution ratio of MEL-ROL LM to water is 4:1.)

Thoroughly mechanically mix primer. Prime the entireconcrete surface to be waterproofed by spraying or rollingon a single coat at a coverage rate of 100-150 sq. ft./gal.Allow primer to dry (approximately one hour, dependingon climatic conditions).

After surface preparations are complete, detailing shouldbe addressed. The desired thickness of membrane cover-age is 120 mils for inside/outside corners and non-movingand hairline cracks, as well as around drains and penetra-tions. All control and expansion joints should be tapedwith DETAIL STRIP before application of membrane.

MEL-ROL LM can be applied directly from the containerusing a ¾” nap roller. Apply in two coats, each 30 milsthick, allowing first coat to reach initial set prior to applica-tion of second coat.

MEL-ROL LM may be sprayed on vertical surfaces at theminimum coverage thickness of 60 mils wet (45 mils dry).A single coat may achieve desired coating thickness. How-ever, if material slumps due to temperature or substrateconditions, two coats (30 mils wet) may be necessary.

In low temperatures,MEL-ROL LM (ALL SEASON) must be kept warm using pailor drum heaters. The product should be heated to 60° F.

MEL-ROL LM (ALL SEASON) should be sprayed at a mini-mum thickness of 80 mils wet (45 mils dry). A single coatmay achieve desired coating thickness. However, if mate-rial slumps due to temperature or substrate conditions,two coats (40 mils wet) may be necessary.

If MEL-DRAIN is used with MEL-ROL LM (ALL SEASON), useplastic-backed MEL-DRAIN to prevent waterproofingmembrane from being pushed into plastic core.

Allow membrane to cure a minimum of 48 hours prior toapplication of a protection course. Membrane should becovered within 30 days after application. Cover with PRO-TECTION COURSE, MEL-DRAIN or 10 mil PERMINATOR. A

To reduce potential blistering on poured concrete founda-tions, a thin primer coat of the material may be required.

Prime the entire concrete surface to be waterproofed byspraying or rolling on a single coat of MEL-ROL LM (ALLSEASON) at a coverage rate of 100-150 sq. ft./gal. Allowprimer to dry approximately one hour prior to applicationof the coating.

PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL WITHPLASMATIC CORE (PMPC)PMPC, when properly applied, is designed to stop mois-ture migration (liquid or vapor) in footings, concrete floorslabs and structural slabs, which greatly reduces fungus,mildew and mold. It is especially useful under slabs over-laid with wood, tile, epoxy and urethane coatings, carpet-ing and resilient or seamless flooring systems, since ithelps prevent warping and buckling caused by moisturemigration. PMPC also greatly reduces radon gas from en-tering the structure.

When estimating the amount of PMPC required, figure theactual area plus 20% for overlap when using sheets. Forrolls, figure actual areas, plus 12% for overlap.

PMPC can be cut with a roofer’s or linoleum knife, using astraight edge.

Normally to facilitate bending at a change in plane, suchas at corners or footings, a 2” x 4” can be used to make thebend. In cold weather conditions, lightly heat the bendingarea and make the bend.

Pointing with POINTING MASTIC should be done whereveran edge is exposed to prevent water from traveling undera sheet.

By installing PMPC on the ground prior to placing the con-crete floor, moisture will be prevented from comingthrough the floor slab.

In addition to the horizontal on or below-grade applica-tion, PMPC can be placed on the intermediate structuralslab, forming a “sandwich slab” installation. As a result,

prime coat of MEL-ROL LM (ALL SEASON) or beads ofPOINTING MASTIC can be used to secure the protection tothe wall.

Polystyrene insulation boards can be applied only if themembrane has thoroughly cured (72 hrs. minimum) andthere is no danger of residual solvent degrading theboards.

Allow 48 hours for complete cure of membrane prior tobackfilling.

MEL-DRAIN Used in conjunction with a total W. R. MEADOWS moistureprotection system, MEL-DRAIN is the ideal choice for en-hanced waterproofing protection of basement walls, plazadecks, earth-sheltered homes, commercial buildings, re-taining walls, underground parking, site drainage, etc.

For vertical, below-grade applications, unroll MEL-DRAINwith flat, core side against the wall or waterproofing mate-rial. POINTING MASTIC or MEL-PRIME primer are excellentadhesives compatible with this installation. The flat sidecore lip is overlapped to provide a continuous drainagelayer. Extra filter fabric is provided at the edges for over-lapping with the next sheet. MEL-DRAIN is easily cut withconstruction knives or scissors.

For horizontal applications, unroll and overlap so thatwater runs with overlap. Add appropriate ballast asneeded to hold down drainage board.

If MEL-DRAIN is used with MEL-ROL LM or MEL-ROL LM (ALLSEASON), use plastic-backed MEL-DRAIN to prevent water-proofing membrane from being pushed into plastic core.

Level, tamp or roll earth or granular material beneath theslab base as specified by supplied architectural drawings.Follow ASTM E-1643-94. (Standard practice and procedurefor installation of vapor retarder used in contact withearth or fill under concrete slabs.)

Horizontal Application …Unroll 200’ (61 m) PERMINATORover the area where the slab is to be poured. Cut to size ifnecessary. PERMINATOR should completely cover the pourarea. All joints/seams, both lateral and butt, should beoverlapped 6” and taped using 4” wide PERMINATOR TAPE.(Note: The PERMINATOR TAPE area of adhesion should befree from dust, dirt and moisture to allow maximum adhe-sion of the pressure-sensitive tape.)

The most efficient installation method includes placingPERMINATOR on top of the footing and against the verti-cal wall. This will sandwich PERMINATOR between thefooting, vertical wall and poured concrete floor. This willhelp protect the concrete slab from external moisturesources once the slab has been placed.

Before placing concrete slab, make sure all penetrations,block-outs and damaged areas are repaired/addressed.

Numerous municipal building codes do not allow theplacement of vapor barriers over the footing, due tobreaking of the bond between the wall and footing. Al-though this is not an optimal application method, W. R.MEADOWS approves this alternate method when requiredby building code.

moisture is prevented from filtering downward from me-chanical floors dedicated to heating and air conditioningequipment. This helps prevent damage to lower floor lev-els.

PMPC can be applied directly over tamped grade, becauseit does not require a gravel bed, a bed of sand and/or“crusher rock” prior to the installation of the floor slab, al-though these practices are acceptable. If PMPC is to beplaced over a large angular fill, see 4.1.4 of ACI 302.1R-96for recommendations. Material is placed in position by ei-ther the “Dutch Lap” method (Figure 1) with laps sealedwith CATALYIC BONDING ASPHALT, or by the “butt-joint”method (Figure 2) with joints sealed with PMPC TAPE poly-side up. These methods provide a permanent, monolithicvapor seal, without voids or open seams. If desired, onstructural floor slabs of multi-level buildings, sheets maybe placed in a bed of hot asphalt for continuous adhesion.Remove plastic film at joints prior to applying CATALYTICBONDING ASPHALT or PMPC TAPE.

PERMINATORPERMINATOR underslab vapor barrier is primarily de-signed for underslab construction, where the soil hasbeen tamped and leveled or compacted fill has been ap-plied. Vertical Wall Application …Install MEL-ROL waterproofingmembrane or MEL-ROL LM liquid waterproofing mem-brane according to installation instructions. While themembrane is still tacky, install PERMINATOR as a protec-tive course over the applied waterproofing membrane.Using TERMINATION BAR with concrete nails or PERMINA-TOR TAPE at the termination of the waterproofing mem-brane is advisable in some applications. Cut a slit around pipes, ductwork, rebar, and wire penetra-tions to place the initial layer of PERMINATOR. To furtherprotect the concrete slab from external moisture sources,use a piece of PERMINATOR and place a collar around thisas well.

1. Cut a piece of PERMINATOR a minimum width of 12”.The length should be 1 1/2 times the pipe circumference.With a roofer’s knife or scissors, cut “fingers” half the widthof the film.

2. Wrap around and tape the collar onto the pipe andcompletely tape fingers to the bottom layer of PERMINA-TOR.

Using POINTING MASTIC as the sealant around clusters ofpipe or conduit can be also be used.

In the event that PERMINATOR is damaged during or afterinstallation, repairs must be made. Cut a piece of PERMI-NATOR large enough to cover any damage by a minimumoverlap of 6” in all directions. Clean all adhesion areas ofdust, dirt and moisture. Tape down all edges using PERMI-NATOR TAPE.

NOTE: It is not necessary to overlay PERMINATOR withgravel or sand. PERMINATOR is tough enough to with-stand normal construction abuse and traffic. Most flooringcompanies recommend the placement of the concreteslab directly on the vapor barrier. We agree, since thiseliminates the potential for trapping moisture in a blotter-effect, causing it to resurface through the slab into theflooring systems. Consult local building codes and regula-tions, plus architectural and design firm guidelines, priorto application.

the pumps are able to create enough suction to allow ma-terial to be pulled from the top of a standing drum (ortote) of product. (An option available for the Graco GH833 Big Rig allows the pump to be placed directly over adrum for improved pumping of thicker materials in coolerweather.)

EQUIPMENTHose -We have used up to 100’ of hose with these prod-ucts. (Longer lengths may work; possibly up to 150’) Thehose must be rated for use up to 4000 psi for these units.

Spray Gun -The Graco heavy duty texture gun is required(part #241705). It does not contain a paint filter and workswell for these products. Other Graco guns have notworked, as they contain a diverter pin in the spray nozzlethat will constantly clog the gun.

Spray Tips -We have used the 0.051” (Graco 551,651) tipsuccessfully for spraying and this is our preferred tip sizefor the MEL-ROL LM/AIR-SHIELD LM products. For spray-ing of the AIR-SHIELD LMP, the 0.051” tip will work, butusing the 0.035” or 0.037” tip will yield a smoother finishon the wall. For spraying of a solvent-based ALL SEASONproduct, we recommend using the 0.035” (Graco 535, 635)tip. NOTE: Tips should be the “reversible” type for easyclean out.

APPLICATION - PRIMERPriming -Priming of poured concrete substrates is recom-mended to minimize the potential for blistering of themembrane after it is applied and when exposed to directsunlight. Once applied, the primer coat should be allowed

SPRAYER EQUIPMENT

Extensive field testing has shown that the Graco GH 833Big Rig or Hydra Max 350 (now obsolete) sprayers workbest for spraying of the water-based AIR-SHIELD LM, AIR-SHIELD LMP, MEL-ROL LM and MEADOW-PRUF SEAMLESSproducts. (These sprayers also work well for the sprayingof the solvent-based, ALL SEASON versions of these prod-ucts.) We are not aware of any other types of sprayersbeing used successfully with our products. Initially, wehad used the Gmax 7900 Roof Rig, but we have foundthat the pressures (4000 psi) attained by the Graco GH833 Big Rig and Hydra Max 350 units yield more consis-tent, trouble-free results. The Graco GH 833 Big Rig andHydra Max 350 units are capable of a 3.5 – 4.0 gal./min.output, compared to a 2.1 gal./min. for the Gmax 7900Roof Rig. The water-based emulsion products are ex-tremely shear sensitive and should NOT be appliedthrough gear-type pumps or pressurized follower platesystems. These systems will cause the emulsions to break,which will then clog the equipment. The ALL SEASON ver-sions of the products are not shear sensitive and will re-main stable when applied by most standard sprayequipment.

The Graco GH 833 Big Rig unit come equipped with 100’of hose, a texture spray gun, and several tips. NOTE: Thestandpipe on the sprayer MUST be opened and checkedfor the presence of a filter element and plastic sleeve.These MUST BOTH be removed prior to use, as they willcause clogging.

Both the Graco GH 833 Big Rig and Hydra Max 350 canbe used for five-gal. pails or 55-gal. drums. Extensions on

should be kept in a heated enclosure at the jobsite duringcold weather.

Roller-Material can be roller applied if a ¾” minimum naproller is used. Several coats will typically be required to ob-tain the desired thickness. Allow the first coat to dry thor-oughly before second coat is applied. Foam-type rollersor shorter naps should not be used, as they will simplyslide on the substrate. Rinse and store all rollers used forwater-based products in a container of water when not inuse. This is necessary, as the material will cure very quicklyon the rollers if allowed to “dry out.” If this does occur, therollers will need to be discarded or cleaned with solventand allowed to dry thoroughly prior to re-use.

EQUIPMENT CLEANUPWater-based products:

1) Solvents must NOT come in contact with the liquidemulsion MEL-ROL LM/AIR-SHIELD LM products while inthe sprayer, as they will immediately break the emulsionand plug up the entire sprayer system. 2) Before starting to spray, the sprayer MUST be flushed

with clean water. 3) When spraying is complete, material must NOT be left

in the pump, lines or gun as the MEL-ROL LM/AIR-SHIELDLM emulsions will quickly begin to break and cure in theequipment. When finished spraying, WATER ONLY shouldbe PROMPTLY flushed through the system until pumpand hose run clear. Do NOT add soap to the flush water, asit too will break the emulsion. “Simple Green” cleaner isthe only cleaner found that can be used successfully.

4) When spraying is complete, solvents, including xylene,toluene, mineral spirits, paint thinner, gasoline, etc., mustNOT be used for the INITIAL flushing of the system. These

Allowing the primer to be exposed to directsunlight prior to the membrane application will allow thesurface to “warm up” (due to the black color) and help “de-gas” the surface. This “de-gassing” releases the air/mois-ture vapors in the pores of the substrate, allowing them toexpand and dissipate prior to the membrane application.If the primer is not exposed to direct sunlight for a suffi-cient time interval prior to membrane application, thenblistering of the membrane may occur.

Primer Dilution/Application Rate - Dilute the water-basedLM products 4-5 parts product to one part water. Apply at100-150 ft.²/gal. and allow to dry approximately one hour.The solvent based ALL SEASON products do not need tobe diluted and should also be applied at 100-150 ft.²/gal.AIR-SHIELD LMP typically does not require a prime coat.

APPLICATION - MEMBRANESpray-Several coats may be required to obtain the recom-mended thickness without excessive running or slumpingof the wet membrane in hot weather. Allow the first coatto dry approximately one hour before application of thesecond coat.

NOTE: The MEL-ROL LM, AIR-SHIELD LM and MEADOW-PRUF SEAMLESS products can be sprayed easily when thematerial temperature is 40°F or above.

The material temperature of the AIR-SHIELD LMP and theALL SEASON products should be 60° F or above to be suc-cessfully sprayed. These products become quite thick andmore difficult to spray as temperatures fall below 60° F.The AIR-SHIELD LMP and ALL SEASON products should bestored at 60° F or above prior to use, and the containers

Solvent-based, ALL SEASON products:1) While the ALL SEASON products are stable in the

sprayer, once spraying is complete, solvents should beflushed through the system until pump and hose runclear. Aromatic solvents (xylene or toluene) work best, butmineral spirits, paint thinner, etc., can also be used. Sol-vents can be left in the sprayer for short periods of time,but should NOT be allowed to remain in the sprayer for ex-tended periods of time, as they may begin to degrade theseals and hose.

2) When switching from a solvent-based to a water-based product: After flushing with solvent, water MUSTbe flushed through the ENTIRE system until all traces ofsolvent have been removed. When beginning to spray awater-based emulsion product, if ANY solvent remains inthe sprayer, the pump, hose, gun, and spray tips WILLCLOG and need to be cleaned out.
