Utilization of Effective Microorganism and Michoriza on Growth andProduction Quality of Cats Whiskers(Orthosiphon stamineus)

By Norfaizah Mohd Yunus1/ and H.M. Edi Armanto2/1/Faculty of Agrotechnology and Food Science, UMTMalaysia2/Faculty of Agrotechnology and Food Science, UMTMalaysia

    1) The Research ProblemCats Whiskers is well-known herb for Asian countries for its benefit to our health. It can

treat diabetes, gout and hypertension, etc. the leaves contain many active substances that cancure the illness in our body. Therefore, in order to improve Cats Whiskersbranchs and leaves

production, we apply Effective Microorganism and Michoriza to soils in order to improve soilfertility. If the soils become fertile, at the same time the soils can increase their capacity toimprove the Cats Whiskersproduction of branchs and the leaves.

    2) The Research ObjectivesThe objective of this research was to determine the best dose of the addition of Effective

Microorganism and Michoriza to improve the availability of nutrients N, P and K which affects theproduction of Cats Whiskersof branch and the leaves.

    3) The Research HypothesisThere are two Hypotheses which were proved in this research. The first hypothesis isconcerned with nutrient availability in the soils and the second hypothesis is to prove the best

interaction Effective Microorganism and Michoriza for Cats Whiskers production of branch andthe leaves.

    a) It was predicted (estimated or presumed) that with the application (giving) of EffectiveMicroorganism and Michoriza to the soils, it can improve nutrient availability in the soils andincrease the production of Cats Whiskersof branch and leaves.

    b) It was predicted (estimated or presumed) that the best interaction dose of EffectiveMicroorganism and Michoriza for improving nutrient availability in the soils and forincreasing the production of Cats Whiskersis the Treatment of A2B1.

    4) Explanations of Treatments, Blocks and InteractionsThe researcher will carry out the research in the fields. The Factorial Experiment in RCBD

which consists of two factors (Effective Microorganism and Michoriza)was conducted in thisresearch. The symbol and the doses of treatments are presented in Table 1 and the TreatmentCombinations of the 4x3 Factorial Experiments in RCBD are given in Table 2. In order toinvestigate the effects of Effective Microorganism and Michoriza on growth and production ofCats Whiskers of branch and the leaves, the Effective Microorganism and Michoriza wereanalyzed in the laboratory for knowing their chemical contents and the laboratory results arepresented in Table 3 and table 4.

    5) Field Layout of Experimental DesignsThe field layout of factorial Experiment in RCBD was clearly given in Figure 1. There are

three blocks and in each block the experimental units are replicated two times or one time. Allexperimental units are randomly assigned in each block.

    6) The Research Methods and ProceduresPlace and Time of the Research: This study would be conducted at the Greenhouse of

Agrotechnology Department, University Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia. The research was heldin September to Disember 2013. Chemical laboratory analysis of soil and Cats Whiskers wasconducted in the Agrotechnology Laboratory of Agrotechnology Department Faculty of

Agrotechnology and Food Science, University Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia.Tools and Materials of the Research: The tools used in this research were follows: 1)

polybag, 2) the tools to take soils in the fields, 3) ruler, 4) weight, 5) sprayer, 6) writing tools, 7)equipment for laboratory analysis of soil. The research materials used in this study were follows:1) soils, 2) Cats Whiskersbranchs, 3) Effective Microorganism, and 4) Michoriza.

Preparation and Field Survey: The research activities included as follows: collectingliterature and studying the literature pertaining to this research, determines where the soil

sampling and Effective Microorganism as well as preparing the necessary tools and materials inthe field and laboratory. Field survey included activities of taking of Effective Microorganism andMichoriza from the MARDI.

Preparation of Soil Media and Treatment: The soils were weighed and inserted topolybag each 5 kg soils and the soils were mixed with treatment (Effective Microorganism andMichoriza) according to combination treatment and then soils were incubated with the treatmentsfor 14 days.

Planting Seeds:After 14 days incubation, Cats Whiskersbranchs were planted directly toplanting media in the polybags. Each polybag was planted with two branchs of Cats whiskers of15 cm to 20 cm in the depth of 7 cm in each polybag. After 3 days of planting, the selection of thebest Cats Whiskerswas done and only one Cats Whiskerswas in each polybag.

Maintenance and Harvest: The maintaining activities included as follows: i.e. do 2 timesof watering in the morning and evening, weeding the weeds etc. Harvesting is done after thebranch of Cats Whiskersmore than 30 cm after planting; the branchs that have reach 30 cm andabove can be harvest; 10 weeks after planting.

    7) The Measured Variables (10 Measured Variables Or Parameters)The measured variables are divided into three groups, as following: (1) before research

done, (2) during the field research process and (3) after the field research is done.

    A. Before ResearchThe soil sampling analyses and treatments analyses, i.e. Chemical Analyses of effective

microorganism and Chemical Analyses of Michoriza.

    B. During the field research process (Pre harvest)We will determine the effects of Effective Microorganism and Michoriza on the growth of the

    Cats Whiskersperformance due to treatments given.1) Soil pH2) N-total3) P-available4) K-available

    C. After the field research done (Post harvest)We will determine the effects of Effective Microorganism and Michoriza on the Production

Data AnalysesAll collected data would be analyzed by using Excel and SPSS program. The ANOVA andhypotheses Test would be used Post Hoc Test of Tukey at significance levels of 5 % (significant)and 1% (very significant). If the Sig test results indicate a star marked influence, it will be followedby Tukey test of 1% level.
