The Houses of the Toraja

The ethnic groups in the mountain regions of southwest and central Sulawesi (Celebes) are known by the name of Toraja, which has come to mean "those who live upstream" or "those who live in the mountains". Their name is in fact derived from the word Raja, which in Sanskrit means "king". The society is hierarchically structured: the noblemen are called rengnge, the ordinary people to makaka, and the slaves to kaunan; birth determines which rank a person will occupy.

The distinctive features of the traditional houses (tongkonan) of the Toraja are the "buffalo horns", the roof design and the rich decoration on the walls. The buffalo is a symbol of status, courage, strength and fighting spirit.

Designed as a representation on the universe, the tongkonan is constructed in three parts: the upper world (the roof), the world of humans (the middle of the building), and the underworld (the space under the floor). The highly distinctive roors constructed by the Toraja given rise to various ingenious interpretations. Certainly the roof is something of deep significance for the Toraja, and even today they build "modern" (in other words houses built with cement) houses with such roofs.

Corruption and Indonesian Culture

Thesis:Corruption has happened for many years and today it becomes a bad culture in Indonesia for three reasons.

Argument 1:Most adult Indonesian or foreigners have known and admitted that corruptions happen in many places. The daily newspapers, news programs on TV and radio have reported corruptions are done everywhere, almost in all departments or public services of this country. Corruptions happen in health, education departments and banks. When we manage to get somedocuments in public service offices, we usually need much money to pay. Manipulations happen everywhere.

Argument 2:The actions to eliminate corruption are weak. The ever stronger culture seems not to come to anend when the responsible institutions who have to reinforce the justice today commit

Page 41: Contoh Procedure Text How to Make

corruption. This is the worst. Corruptions happen in police department, courts where judges, public prosecutors, lawyers make deals to do corruption. All of us also heard in the end of 2004, Probosutejo reported that he had bribed the Supreme Court, or called Mahkamah Agung which becomes the highest level where the justice can be obtained. Perhaps you have to try to come to the local courts and see what happen there. You will see practices of bribery and other kinds of corruption. Therefore, we can say that corruptions becomes our culture. Do you like it?

Argument 3:The citizens have no goodwill to fight against the corruption. They create the situations in which people have opportunities to do corruptions. The citizens like to break the rules because they are not disciplined. For example, in the street when they drive a car or ride motorcycle, they do not have the driving license or necessary documents. Then, they are caught by the local policemen. To avoid more difficulties, they like to bribe the officer. The officer let them go then. In other words, the citizens and officers are the same, doing corruption together. If only the people were critical, disciplined, and obey the rules, and willing to report any wrong behaviors, this country will not be number one corrupting country in the world.

Reiteration/ conclusion:In conclusion, corruption is becoming a bad culture in Indonesia if it is not ended soon by all of us. It seems that there must be more severe penalty for the corruptors. Do we still care about the future of this country?

Learning English

Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure with learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English progress. Some underlying reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language learning.

Firstly, “the song stuck in my head” Phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long term memory.

Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition, which is just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes them many times more motivating than other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as any other literary sample.

Page 45: Contoh Procedure Text How to Make

Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop songs and probably many other types don’t have precise people, place or time reference.

In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within oneself and within one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture, religion, patriotism and yeas, even revolution.

Last but not least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as studying grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning vocabulary, spelling and culture.

From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music and songs, learning English can be enjoyable and fun.

The Girl and Her Bucket

Page 48: Contoh Procedure Text How to Make

A young girl was going to market with a bucket of milk on her head. "With the gold that I get from the sale of this milk, I'll buy a red hen," she said. "The hen will lay eggs, they'll hatch and then I'll have many chicks to be raised. I'll feed them well and when they're grown, they will lay eggs. And those eggs will hatch and I will have more hens that will lay more eggs that will hatch into chicks.

I'll be rich and I'll wear fine clothes with emeralds and rubies from my collar to my toes and one day perhaps I shall visit the Queen. I shall bring her rare gifts from China. I'll enter the court with my arms full of treasure. When I bow low to the queen, I shall say, "For your majesty's pleasure!"

Beans and bacon, cheese and bread, were all he had to offer, but he offered them freely. The Town Mouse said: "I cannot understand, Cousin, how you can put up with such poor food as this, but of course you cannot expect anything better in the country; come you with me and I will show you how to live. When you have been in town a week you will wonder how you could ever have stood a country life."

Being on time is a beautiful social ethic and one of great importance, as it creates efficiency in system and implies respect for one another. However, it is one the many values that is not easy for our students to learn.

Inner discipline, one that comes from an understanding of the set rules and regulation, is the highest form behavior. Most excellent school try to instill this with a loving environment. Why, even adults arrive late to meeting, work, etc. Here, we do not agree that late comers should be shut out. They can be given warnings, most of which are enough to make them try their best to reach the school on time latter .If this fails, invite the parent to school.

By Closing the gates, the school is behaving cruelly, to which we prefer not to expose our children. Every school has responsibility to implant good educational principle, but It should be in appropriate ways. Good schools create competitive students who can organize themselves effectively in society, so that everyone gets a quality life as a result of the ethics and values learned for as long as 12 years.

Contoh Teks Hortatory Exposition Students' Cheating 10:51 AM M Ahkam A No comments

Students’ Cheating

Students’ cheating is one of the biggest problems faced by teachers nowadays.

Despite the fact that teachers advise their students not to do dishonest acts during tests, some students still do cheating. There are many kinds of cheating that students do during the test or examination, such as looking other students’ work, put some notes under their clothes, write notes or formulas on their desks make hand signals or go to rest rooms to get the answers from their friends.

In my view, students who do cheating are committing a crime. It is a sort of taking something illegally. This crime causes negative results to the students. Students who always cheat deteriorate their mental capacity. Cheating acts also create dependence. They weaken their self confidence. Instead of preparing for the coming test, they are busy to organize notes on a piece of paper. If this awful habit continues, the students will lose their opportunity to develop their intellectual and mind.

Therefore, school should consider cheating as a very serious problem. School board and administration should go hand to overcome this matter. Honesty must be put in school’s vision. Harsh punishment must be applied to students who commit this crime.

Contoh Teks Hortatory Exposition Boarding School Education 4:10 AM M Ahkam A No comments

There are many arguments in favor of a boarding school education. Nevertheless, the boarding school is not always the best education institution for everyone.

At an early age interacting and communicating with people is very important for a child’s personal life and can be especially helpful for his/her future. In a boarding school, shy children can take advantage of interaction through communal activities. The boarding school also offers a great variety of activities such as arts, sports, and music that allow children to demonstrate and develop

Page 62: Contoh Procedure Text How to Make

specialized skills in their free time.

Furthermore, the structured way of life and strict rules at the boarding school may help students to get used to a well ordered way of life. The manners and social skills will help them to become more responsible and confident, and to develop their talents in leadership. Professionally trained teachers and educators in the boarding school can offer excellent education without the parents’ constant supervision.

In spite of these good points, it is not advisable to send a child to a boarding school if he/she is a dependent learner. A boarding school usually demands that students learn independently. In addition, the boarding school should not be seen as a measure to solve inappropriate behavior or unsatisfactory study performance. Instead of improving, problematic children may close off their relationship with their peers and teachers.

In conclusion although a boarding school may provide good education to many children, it is not recommended for those who are strongly attached to their families. They may become frustrated and socially isolated.

(Soal UN SMA/MA IPA 2011/2012)

3. From the text, we can conclude that…a. The boarding school can be very expensiveb. There are good and bad boarding schoolsc. The boarding school is the solution to our educational problemsd. It’s not necessary to send children to a boarding school because the students can live independentlye. Not everyone thinks that the boarding school is the best educational institution for children

Dear Editor,

We are writing to complain about ads on TV. There are so many ads, especially during our favourite

programmes. We think they should be stopped for a number of reasons.

Page 63: Contoh Procedure Text How to Make

First, ads are nuisance. They go on for a long time and there are so many. Sometimes there seems to

be more ads than programmes.

Second, ads are bad influence on people. They try to encourage people to buy unhealthy food like

beer, soft drink, candy and chips. And they make people want things they do not really need and can

not.

Finally, the people who make ads have too much say in what programmes people watch. That is

because they want to put all their ads on popular programs that a lot of people watch. Some

programmes which are not so popular get stopped because they do not attract enough ads, even

though those programmes may be someone’s favourite.

For those reasons, we think TV station should stop showing ads. They interrupt programmes. They

are bad influences on people, and they are sometimes put a stop to people’s favourite shows. We

are sick of ads, and now we mostly watch other channels.

My wonderful experience at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha

In December 2006, I went to Doha to participate in the 2006 Asian Games taking part in the Bach Volley Ball Championship. We prepared for a long time, training hard and fighting for approval of our participation. Nothing was easy. My partner, clear, my coach, King, and I were aiming to get into the top 8 at the Asian Games.

Unfortunately, I sprained my ankle one week before departure, which frustrated me beyond belief. I had physiotherapy every day following the injury, and tried to recover as quickly as possible. Of course, the ankle could not heal completely in a few days, so I had no choice but to just try my best and have my ankle taped when I played in matches.

We played against a team from Thailand, Mongolia, and Malaysia. The most difficult and important match was that against the Malaysian Team. We played well for the match and tried our very best. SOAL UN SMA 2012

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator, and ornament manufacturer. He was the inventor of dynamite. He also owned Bofors, which he had redirected from its previous role as primarily an iron and steel producer to a major manufacturer of cannons and other ornaments. He held 355 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. In his last will, he used his enormous fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. He was the third son of Immanuel Nobel and Andriette Ahlsell Nobel. Born in Stckholm on 21 October 1833, he went with my family to Saint Petersburg in 1842, where his father invented modern plywood. He studied chemistry with Professor Nikolay Nickolaevich Zinin. When he was 18, he went to the United States to study chemistry for four years and worked for a short period under John Ericsson, who designed the American Civil War ironclad USS Monitor.

Returning to Sweden, with his father after bankruptcy of his family business, he then devoted himself to the study of explosives, and especially to the save manufacture and use of nitroglycerine (discovered in 1847 by Acanio Sobrero, one of his fellow students under Theophile-Jules Pelouze at the University of Turin). A big explosion occurred on 2 September 1864 at his factory in Heleneborg in Stockholm, killing five people. Among them was his younger brother, Emil.

The foundations of the Nobel Prize were laid in 1895 when Alfred Nobel wrote his last will, leaving much of his wealth for its establishment. Since 1901, the prize has honoured men and women for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and for work in peace.
