description

Container gardens are the most popular form of gardening, and it’s easy to see why — they’re simple to plant, quick-growing, and perfect for small spaces. It’s no wonder containers have become a must-have outdoor décor element from suburban porches to the rooftops of modern high-rise buildings. But too often, containers peak during just one season and are then left to wither for the remaining months of the year. In Continuous Container Gardens, garden designers Sara Begg Townsend and Roanne Robbins have teamed up to offer an innovative system for creating stylish containers that change with the seasons. Using an unusual array of plants, Townsend and Robbins begin with a main-stage plant — a woody plant, a garden ornament, or an eye-catching perennial. Then they add a secondary player for texture and variety. As the seasons change, they show how easy it is to swap in and out a supporting cast of plants for a dynamic year-round display. This simple approach yields endless variations, seasonal bursts of color, and varied textures that echo the ever-changing beauty of nature. The book features twelve designer containers, each with a unique plan for swapping plants in every season . . . for a total of 48 looks in all. Each design is supported with stunning photographs of the authors’ unique plant palette and the fully realized container garden. Users will learn to develop their own design eye and style alongside their gardening skills. The authors’ writing style is fresh, friendly, and encouraging and is sure to appeal to a new generation of homeowners and gardeners. With Continuous Container Gardens, gardeners of every level, in every setting, will be able to create a container scene for every season. The Authors:Roanne Robbins is a garden and floral designer and the owner of Nature Contained, a company that offers creative container plantings, small-space gardens, and floral designs for events, holidays, and home décor. COLORFUL STICKS

SpRInGTo us, a New England spring

is pillowy patches of moss

growing along icy woodland

streams, clusters of fl owering

bulbs in front of stone walls, and

swaths of branch tips turning

a mahogany tone and swelling

up in preparation for bloom.

We tried to capture that feel-

ing here—to bring a little piece

of spring to the setting. We

emphasized the yellowness of

the sticks by massing daff odils

around the base and gave the

planting a more ornamental

feel by adding the pansies and a

medley of herbs.

6COLORFUL STICKS

SUmMeRIn summer, the yellowtwig

dogwood is fully leafed out.

Its beautiful yellow sticks

are somewhat concealed at

this point, and without an

underplanting, the com-

position would feel visually

top-heavy. To off set this, we

planted a vibrant underplant-

ing, full of color, motion, and

gusto, starring the diva Abelia

‘Kaleidoscope’. This shrub

packs a punch, off ering not

only intense color but wonder-

ful movement and weight.

We fi nd that it’s sometimes

best to let one plant dictate

the seasonal color story — in

this case, we found our palette

by extracting tones from the

foliage of ‘Kaleidoscope’. Plum-

purple, yellow, chartreuse,

orange . . . they’re all here, and

when artfully arranged, they

keep your eyes moving around

the composition.
