of Temple Attendance
The Power to Seal
Hearts turned to our fathers
Moroni mentioned Elijah
JS-H 1:38-39
38 And again, he quoted the fifth verse thus: Behold, I will
reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the
prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of
the Lord.
39 He also quoted the next verse differently: And he shall
plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the
fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their
fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly
wasted at his coming.
Elijah
Malachi 4:5-6
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the
coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children,
and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come
and smite the earth with a curse.
Who is Elijah?
Lived 800 years before Christ
Prophesied of drought to King Ahab
And Ahab did more to provoke the LORD
God of Israel to anger than all the kings of
Israel that were before him. 1 Kings 16:33
Elijah fed by ravens for 3 years
Who is Elijah?Told by God to go to a widow in the town of Zarapath
10 When he came to the gate of the city, the widow woman [was] there
gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a
little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
11 And as she was going to fetch [it], he called to her, and said, Bring me,
I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
12 And she said, [As] the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an
handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I [am]
gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that
we may eat it, and die.
13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go [and] do as thou hast said: but
make me thereof a little cake first, and bring [it] unto me, and after make
for thee and for thy son.
14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not
waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day [that] the LORD
sendeth rain upon the earth.
15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and
he, and her house, did eat [many] days.
16 [And] the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail,
according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah. 1 Kgs

Who is Elijah?
The Lord tells Elijah to confront
Ahab and his 450 corrupt priests
He calls fire down from heaven
Places the mantel on Elisha, who
becomes prophet
Taken to heaven in a Chariot of Fire
Who is Elijah?
Appeared on the Mount of
Transfiguration to Jesus, while
Peter, James and John watched on.
Gave the keys to Peter, James and
John
Bible Dictionary - Moses:
"As was the case with many of the ancient prophets, Moses' ministry extended beyond the limits of his own mortal lifetime. In
company with Elijah, he came to the Mount of Transfiguration and bestowed keys of the priesthood upon Peter, James, and John. From
this event, which occurred before the resurrection of Jesus, we understand that Moses was a translated being and had not died as
reported in Deuteronomy 34). It was necessary that he be translated, in order to have a body of flesh and bones at the time of the
transfiguration, since the resurrection had not yet taken place. Had he been a spirit only, he could not have performed the work on the
mount of giving the keys to the mortal Peter, James, and John."
Who is Elijah?
Interestingly, the Qur’an mentions Elijah as well
The Qur’an mentions Elijah as well
Peace be upon Elias! This is how We reward those who do good.He is truly among our believing Servants.—Qur'an, chapter 37 (As-Saaffat), verse 129-132
He is praised alongside three other prophets of God:
And Zachariah and John and Jesus and Elias, they were all from among the righteous—Qur'an, chapter 6 (Al-An'am), verse 85
The Quran also suggests his coming in the latter days.
"So also was Elias among those sent and we left this blessing for him among generations to come in later times: Peace and salutation to such as Elias.“
Moroni mentioned Elijah in 1823
The visitation of Elijah would be
fulfilled soon
Who is Elijah? 11 …the heavens were again opened unto us;
and Moses appeared before us, and
committed unto us the keys of the gathering
of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and
the leading of the ten tribes from the land of
the north.
13 After this vision had closed, another great
and glorious vision burst upon us; for Elijah
the prophet, who was taken to heaven
without tasting death, stood before us, and
said:
14 Behold, the time has fully come, which
was spoken of by the mouth of Malachi—
testifying that he [Elijah] should be sent,
before the great and dreadful day of the Lord
come—
15 To turn the hearts of the fathers to the
children, and the children to the fathers, lest
the whole earth be smitten with a curse—
16 Therefore, the keys of this dispensation are
committed into your hands…
D&C 110:11-16
Elijah appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery
in the Kirtland Temple in 1836
Because of Elijah’s visit, families can be
sealed together for eternity
President Gordon B. Hinckley said: “Was there ever a man who truly
loved a woman, or a woman who truly loved a man, who did not
pray that their relationship might continue beyond the grave? Has a
child ever been buried by parents who did not long for the assurance
that their loved one would again be theirs in a world to come?
Can anyone believing in eternal life doubt that the God of heaven
would grant his sons and daughters that most precious attribute of
life, the love that finds its most meaningful expression in family
relationships?
No, reason demands that the family relationship shall continue after
death. The human heart longs for it, and the God of heaven has
revealed a way whereby it may be secured. The sacred ordinances of
the house of the Lord provide for it”
“Why These Temples?” Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [1988].
Because of Elijah’s visit, we can help to
redeem those who have died
The Savior atoned for our sins. He suffered for us. His
sacrifice was vicarious (a substitute). He did for us something
we could not do for ourselves.
We can join the Savior and do something for others that they
cannot do.
In the temple, we do
vicarious ordinances
for those who have
died. We become
Saviors on Mount Zion.
Lives Centered on the Temple
President Howard W. Hunter said:
“I . . . invite the members of the Church to establish the temple of the Lord as the great symbol of their membership and the supernal setting for their most sacred covenants. It would be the deepest desire of my heart to have every member of the Church be temple worthy" (Ensign, July 1994, p. 5).
What are some things we can do to center our lives on the temple?
Ideas for making the temple the
symbol of our membership
Go to the temple as often as possible
Study and ponder on the temple experience regularly
Ponder on the ceremonies
Reflect and study more on our covenants
Do family history work
Stay worthy and prepared
“The temple ceremony will not be fully understood on your first
experience. It will be only be partly understood. Return again and again and
again. Return to learn. Things that have troubled you or things that have
been puzzling or things that have been mysterious will become known to
you. …
“In the temple . . . ponder the deeper meaning of what you see
demonstrated before you. And in the days following your visit keep these
things on your mind; quietly and prayerfully review them and you will find
that your knowledge will increase.
“One of the great values of the temple experience is that it presents the
broad, sweeping panorama of God’s purposes relating to this earth. Once we
have been through the temple (and we can return and refresh our memories)
the events of life fit into the scheme of things. We can see in perspective
where we are, and we can quickly see when we are off course.”
