TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 11, 2016

My Dear Parish Family:

If ever there is doubt of God’s love for you, just open your Bible and read the gospels…the words of Jesus. This week, Luke’s Gospel of the lost sheep, the woman who lost her coin, and the return of the prodigal son, tell the stories of what could very well describe chapters in your lives or mine; the times we strayed and were caught up, even for a brief moment, in situations that caused us to sin. But, in his own words, Jesus gives us words of hope ….. hope in the mercy our Lord has for each and every one of us.

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in his letter, The Face of Mercy, says Jesus reveals the very nature of “God as a Father who never gives up until he has forgiven the wrong and overcome rejection with compassion and mercy.”

In today’s first reading from the Book of Exodus, the Israelites melted gold and made a golden calf that would become their god who brought them out of Egypt. God was angered and was going to punish them for returning to their pagan ways. Moses intervened on their behalf and God forgave them. Saint Augustine wrote, “It is easier for God to hold back anger than mercy. And so it is. God’s anger lasts but a moment, his mercy forever.”

In Saint Paul’s letter to Timothy, he chastises himself for his past sins….sins committed against Jesus and the very people who followed him. But, the purpose of his letter goes deeper. Paul wants it to be known that in truth his actions were due to his ignorance and pride and yet, he was shown mercy and forgiven for all he had done. Saint Paul is expressing to us all that there is no sinner who cannot and will not be forgiven if we only respond to the call of Jesus.

It seems that in our culture our first call is for justice for any offender. Pope Francis, in his letter on mercy, writes that we cannot devalue justice. He said that “anyone who makes a mistake must pay the price….. this is just the beginning of conversion, not its end.” Pope Francis tells us that it is in God’s justice that mercy is given to everyone and it emanates from the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He said that it is through the Cross of Christ that God places judgment on “us and the whole world, because through it he offers us the certitude of love and new life.” Like the lost sheep or coin, or the son that squandered his father’s inheritance and returned home, we, in some fashion, have experienced our own personal separation from God. Perhaps, like Saint Paul, we can now live our lives as the Shepherd searching for that one lost sheep in our family or among our friends, or the person who is lost and can’t seem to find his or her way back to God, or rejoice with open arms in that one child, brother or sister, grandchild, niece or nephew, who wants to begin again. Rejoice and welcome them home….welcome them as God has welcomed you and I, again and again…..

In Christ,

Anne DeMarcoPastoral Minister

The 19th Annual “A Taste of Little Italy” is Sunday, September 18th from 2:00-5:00 p.m. This premier event features Italian food and wine from more than 40 Cleveland area restaurants and wine distributors. The “Taste” supports the scholarship and programming needs for Cleveland Montessori. Tickets are $70.00 each if prepurchased ($75.00 at the door). In conjunction with the event, a customized trip to Italy for two OR Disney Trip for four (including airfare) is being raffled off for $10.00 per ticket. Tickets for the event and the raffle will be available for purchase online at www.tasteoflittleitalycleveland.com or by contacting the school at 216-421-0700.

Cleveland Montessori is appreciative for the use of the Holy Rosary Churchyard for this annual event which has become a Cleveland tradition. The tent for the event will be put up in the parking lot on Thursday, September 15th. Therefore, parking during this weekend is greatly affected. Parishioners will be directed to alternative parking on E. 119th Street or street parking for the Saturday and Sunday Masses during this weekend. Due to the setup for this event, coffee and donuts will not be available in the church hall on the 18th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are grateful to the parish for their continued support of this event.
