High School Completion Structured Classes - DIAL

DELTA INDIVIDUALIZED ADULT LEARNING (DIAL) The DIAL program provides adult students with the opportunity to progress through one of several BC Ministry of Education approved courses available while having access to teacher instruction and guidance in a supportive and friendly classroom atmosphere. Although most courses contain an online/computer-assisted component, the DIAL program differs from distributed learning ( Delta Access) in that classes are conducted onsite; students are expected to attend regularly; a teacher supports and assesses student progress and courses must be completed in one semester.

Students who do not complete a course within the allotted time (one semester) will be considered to have “not successfully completed the course” and may re-register in the DIAL program the following semester and take the entire course again.

Individuals progress at different rates and so some students may complete a course before the end of the semester. English 10 or English Foundations 6/7 is required to register for a DIAL course.

• You would like to upgrade a course that you have previously failed or taken and want a higher mark

• You have a conflict in your timetable. • You have a different learning style. • You want to experience an online

DELTA ADULT STUDY HALL (DASH)

DASH sessions run Monday and Wednesday 9:00 - 12:00 noon, 12:30-4:00 or 6:30-9:30PM, at Delta Community College, pending available space. These sessions are tuition free.

If you are an adult on-line learner or a mature senior student (grade 11 or 12) taking an on-line course and you are finding it difficult to stay motivated or to get beyond a particular section of a course, how about a change of scenery?Try our scheduled work sessions with a teacher present for support and encouragement. DASH sessions run concurrently with our DIAL (Delta Individualized Adult Learning) classes. They provide the opportunity for on-line students to develop a regular school work schedule, to have access to a quiet place to work twice a week, to have access to a computer (or bring your own lap-top), as well as a teacher to provide support and encouragement to keep moving forward. Attending these sessions also allows on-line students to be part of a cohort group working toward the same goal.

Students are responsible for bringing their own texts and materials, doing their own work and for staying in contact with their on-line teacher regarding curriculum, instruction, and assessment. DASH is free of charge. Register early as space is limited.

This provides the opportunity to refine their career goals and also start a career up to 3 years early. Students and parents are connected to Career Programs through Career Education K-12 curriculum, Co-op and Work Experience Teachers, Career & Post-Secondary Advisors, Career Facilitators, and Counselors. Please visit www.deltasd.bc.ca under Career Programs for application packages, brochures, further info, and the latest offerings. The community becomes the classroom where students gain experience in the workplace and are able to embrace or revise their career goals. Students receive feedback from employers about their employability and technical skills related to specific occupations. There are also career specific Work Experience or Co-op programs at some schools.

CTC CADD - Career Technical Centre allows students to apply for the CADD (Computer Drafting & Design) courses at Kwantlen Polytechnic University part-time in the evenings for dual-credit. Youth TRAIN in Trades (was ACE IT) is the opportunity to apply for the technical training of an adult level industry apprenticeship path. It is the first year of the 20% classroom /shop component of becoming a journeyperson (work based training on the job is the other 80%). While most suitable for grade 12’s, grade 11’s and Grad’s to age 19 may apply. Students can earn credits for ‘level one’ of technical training, secondary graduation, and even Post-Secondary credits. That means they will have a significant head start - as well as gaining practical and in-demand skills. ‘Train in Trades’ programs are offered as partnerships between school districts and training providers, as well as our own Designated Trainer facilities. The District generally pays for the tuition costs with students being responsible for all other costs such as PPE, textbooks, and transportation. Students must follow an application process (due before spring break) and have the needed essential skills to be considered for a District Youth Train in Trades program. Application does not guarantee acceptance as seats may be limited and competitive.

Youth WORK in Trades (was SSA) Earn while you learn! Youth apprenticeships allow students age 15 to 19 the opportunity to begin any of the 100+ apprenticeships up to 3 yrs early, earning hours towards their trade as well as graduation credits. It is the beginning of training on the job which is typically 80% of becoming a journeyperson (classroom/shop training is the other 20%). Students must be hired (paid) and working under the direction of a Journey Person and the employer must agree to sponsor them with the ITA. Up to four grade 11/12 courses and a $1000 award are possible. This is a great start or continuation to Train in Trades (ACE IT) technical training.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME INFORMATION

SEAQUAM SECONDARY

In September 2011, Seaquam Secondary introduced the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme as an alternative to Advanced Placement courses in grades 11 and 12. The IB Diploma is a prestigious international pre-university qualification and is recognized by universities and governments throughout the world.

All IB Diploma students take six subjects across the disciplines in a manner that assures both breadth and depth of study. The deliberate combination of breadth and depth in both academic and personal areas equips students with the skills and attitudes they require for higher education or employment, and engender international understanding and responsible citizenship.

HOMESTAY HOST FAMILY OPPORTUNITIES

The Delta School District International Student Program is seeking families in the Ladner, North Delta, and Tsawwassen areas who are interested in providing homestays for its international students. The District offers students from Asia, Europe, Mexico and South America the opportunity to study in its schools for periods of one month up to a full year. Students range from grades 5 to 12. Visiting teachers occasionally arrive for monthly study programs as well.

Delta residents interested in this opportunity must be committed to providing a safe, emotionally supportive environment for the student and be willing to take an active part in assisting the student to integrate into the community and school life. Host families will provide a private bedroom, all bedding and linens, three meals each day, a study table and lamp, and make arrangements for transportation to and from school, if required. Most students will also require computer access.

Families must complete an application package and undergo a screening and interview process. Students are placed with families who best match the students’ own interests and who will best meet their needs. Completion of a criminal records search is also required.
