COMPASS Department of Earth Sciences Royal Holloway University of London Egham, Surrey, TW20 0EX, UK Email: [email protected] COMPASS Continental Margin Process Analysis, Structures & Stratigraphy COMPASS conducts integrated multi- disciplinary analysis of geodynamic, lithospheric, tectonic and sedimentary processes that lead to formation of basins and petroleum systems on rifted continental margins. COMPASS explicitly links research across all scales, from tectonic plates via margins and basins, to stratal architectures and reservoirs. Research is focussed on interlocking multi-scale simulations through integration of plate kinematics, computational geodynamics, tectonic physical simulations, stratigraphic forward modeling, seismic interpretation and field studies. All these methods will be applied to case studies of sedimentary basins, specifically the South Atlantic conjugate margins. Who are the academic partners of COMPASSWe are a multi-disciplinary team of researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London investigating the geodynamics, syn- and post-rift evolution of continental margins with an existing focus on the Atlantic margins, from the Falkland Plateau to the Norwegian Sea. The group is ideally balanced to undertake integrative studies of continental rift processes and basin evolution using analytical, numerical, and physical simulations, regional geological analyses, and case studies.

The academic members have extensive experience in petroleum geosciences research in collaboration with industry partners. The COMPASS consortium is fully integrated in the internationally

established Petroleum Geoscience research group and MSc petroleum geosciences teaching programmes of the Earth Sciences Department.

The unique integrated multi-disciplinary research of COMPASS will work towards:

n Understanding the dynamics and interactions of complex lithospheric deformation, asthenosphere flow, and tectono-sedimentary processes in rift basins and conjugate margins;

n System analysis of fundamental lithospheric, tectonic and sedimentary processes controlling the evolution of sedimentary basins and petroleum systems on continental margins across a range of scales, from basins, stratal architectures to reservoirs;

n Integrating analyses and dynamic simulations of tectonic and depositional processes during continental rifting and passive margin evolution from plate-tectonic to reservoir scales;

n Explicitly characterizing the evolution of margin-scale petroleum systems within such simulations.
