Vectran™’s advantage

Vectran™ is spun from Vectra liquid crystal polymer, which results in a thread that is thermoplastic and has multifi laments. This semicrystalline material is harder then aramid, has fi ve times higher tensile strength than steel and in addition, is also lighter than comparable nylon thread. Vectran™ maintains these attributes even in the most adverse weather conditions.

PolyX – built to resist!With the PolyX-Breaker, we are bringing our car expertise to the bicycle tyre sector. Polyester has been used successfully in car tyres for years and has proven itself over and over. The highly durable polyester thread is cross-stitched with a close mesh. As a result, very high fabric density is achieved, which not only makes the breaker more durable against foreign objects, but also particularly resistant to punctures.

Race sport – easy, quick and secure.Uncompromisingly designed for mountain bike XC and marathon racing. The race sport casings combines consistent lightweight design and exceptional puncture protection at the highest level. The design makes the difference – an especially fi ne, high quality nylon fabric with an intricate and universally protective rubber casing, together with the legendary BlackChili compound for the ultimate race day tyre.

ProTection – carefree epic ride.Better than ever before – our new ProTection carcass is ready for duty! The addition of a ProTection layer under the tread and in the sidewalls makes it particularly durable and resistant to injury/damage or penetration of foreign bodies. Universally applicable, they also inspire with BlackChili Compound, attractive design and low weight. In addition, they are easliy converted to tubeless as they now feature a tubless compatible bead.

BlackChili Compound

This unique tread rubber mixture which is only produced in our German factory has revolutionised bicycle tyres. The resultant compound showed a new relationship between grip and rolling resistance. This ‘Elevated level, as it was previously known, was given the name BlackChili’. Countless test wins that were shown in laboratory tests show a tangible benefi t. The latest polymers, nanoscale soot particles and optimized fi llers all guarantee a unique performance, from downhill MTB tyres to the time trial tyres of the ProTour, they are second to none in their respective areas. BlackChili Compound improves rolling resistance by 26 % and provides 30 % more grip than activated silica compounds. Tyres with BlackChili compound also impress with higher mileage and unlike many multi-compounds, provide a constant ride from the fi rst to the last kilometre.

Faster than the speed of sound!With the Grand Prix Supersonic your contact with the road can be tuned to minimum weight and minimum rolling resistance. Together with a “Race 28 Supersonic” inner tube, our quickest tyre weighs only 200 g! The slick rolling area made out of a carbon black mixture looks cool and is of course made using our BlackChili recipie. But be cautious! The Grand Prix Supersonic is a very apt weapon in fi ghting for a personal best time, although for this extra speed, the tyre does not feature any additional puncture protection and has limited mileage use. With this in mind, the Grand Prix Supersonic is not a tyre for training!

Technology from hell!Thanks to its DuraSkin™ anti-tear fabric, the Grand Prix 4-Season holds up under extreme conditions. In the Paris – Roubaix race, the “Hell of the North”, cyclists equipped with DuraSkin™ enhanced tyres have the fewest tyre related problems during the race. Incorporating our special wear resistant carbon compound, the tyre is characterized by very good mileage performance as well as excellent adhesion on wet roads and at low temperatures. With the 23 mm, 25 mm and 28 mm versions, the Grand Prix 4-Season makes it possible to select the right tyre for various road qualities and comfort requirements. GatorSkin The long distance runner.A durable carbon black mixture, a well regarded puncture protection system and the DuraSkin™-anti-cut fabric turn the GatorSkin, formely known as Ultra GatorSkin, into a real long distance runner. Conservative road professional or high-tech athlete?

It is the most reliable of all the tyres in the professional peloton and has proven itself time and time again on the world race circuit, often accompanying prominent cyclists on their way to victory. We are proud of our Competition, that’s why we always try to keep him on the road to victory. The Competition was the fi rst tyre to feature BlackChili Compound and the Vectran™Breaker. Now also available in a 25 mm width.

The time machine.TT stands for time trial. Entire tours are decided in the fi ght against the clock, just look at Cadel Evans’s victory on Conti Podium TT’s in the 2011 Tour de France. This is reason enough to offer particularly fast tyres. While it was conceived as a time trial tyre, the Podium TT is also very popular with professionals for normal races. The reason for this is its construction. Thanks to the latest BlackChili Compound, this chrono specialist, available in 19 mm and 22 mm width, is not only super fast, but its Vectran™Breaker offers excellent puncture prevention. In addition, the 22 mm width version of the Podium is lightweight at only 205 g. A low weight means low rotation energy. The thickness of the tread was reduced to 0.7 mm, which is still enough for a few tough race days. The ultrafast slick tread shows how fast it really is even when it’s not moving.

The attributes of carbon and aluminium.

The aluminium rim cement for tubulars is completely different from the carbon aluminium cement for tubulars. This is particularly true for the connection between the tyre and the rim. The crucial factor here is the different surface structure and primarily the different heat conductivities of the materials. It is thus important to use different types of cement for the different attributes of the materials.

Aluminium rim cement for tubulars.

The aluminium rim cement for tubulars, in the typical continentalyellow packaging, has proven itself for decades. Generations of racing cyclists and mechanics rely on this cement. Maximum safety is achieved with high adhesive strength and good processability, the most important aspect of cemented tyres. The classic bead guarantees a perfect fi t and the application is conventional. However, processing differs entirely from that of the carbon cement, so please always pay attention to the application information.

Carbon rim cement for tubulars.

Carbon rim cement for tubulars, in a black packaging, was specifi cally designed for increased thermal strain and the particular properties of the surface of carbon. The unfavourable heat dissipation of carbon softens conventional cement, particularly during long descents, which means that the tyre may become detached from the rim. The carbon cement, which has been especially developed for carbon rims, remains hard even at high temperatures. Note: It is essential to pay attention to the application instructions!

Note: Carbon tubular cement for carbon rims must be handled differently to conventional tubular cement for aluminum rims. Always observe the processing information on the packaging.

Universal System Tubeless.

Tubeless Tyres by Continental work with both UST and Rigida/Nagesti rims and wheels. Tyre and rim form an airtight chamber. A tube is not necessary and pinchfl ats not possible anymore. In comparison to the conventional system, the tyre pressure can be lowered. The comfort of the ride increases. At a lower tyre pressure the tyre defl ects more. The contact patch of the tyre increases and the tread adapts to the ground better. Tubeless tyres allow decreased air pressure and therefore deliver more traction.

The sidewalls of freeride and downhill tyres are subjected to extraordinarily high loads. A rubber profi le between the carcass layers ensures stability. The Apex sits on the tyre bead and reinforces the sidewalls of the tyre. The tyre does not impact on the rim during rough rides over rocky ground. The tyre stays more upright when cornering. The tyre is designed for XC and trail use with speed as the main priority. ECO – the energy saving tyres.The tyres with the Continental ECO logo benefi t from over 100 years of experience in the development of mopeds and motorcycle tyres. Optimized and recommended for e-bikes at speeds of up to 25 km/h, they guarantee low roll resistance and good puncture protection with their extra high quality construction. The durability has been studied on e-bikes to prevent early wear and tear due to the additional drive forces. Some models, such as the TopContact II, also have the ECE-R 75 test label which authorizes use on fast e-bikes up to 50 km/h.

TWI (Tread Wear Indicators) – Safety comes fi rst.The wear condition on a treaded tyre is easily recognisable whereas profi le free tyres or slicks are much harder to determine. For that reason Continental began introducing wear indicators on profi le-free race tyres for the fi rst time at the Grand Prix 4000 in 2004. The TWIs (Tread Wear Indicators) are now being used on almost all Continental race tyres. If both small circular depressions at the centre of the tread are no longer visible, that means it’s time to change the part, an important aspect for your safety. Wear indicators are also used for in-town trekking and on e-bike tyres. The TopContact II has small bars in the profi le base which indicate a minimum profi le depth of 1.6 mm. You can identify Continental cycle tyres with TWIs from the appropriate marking on the sidewall.

The user-friendly tube system is suitable for any size, length, design, type of valve and perfect for any tyre dimension and riding occasion. Varying tube types can affect your tyres’ handling characteristics with little effort: the Standard tube, available in all dimensions, offers the best compromise for everyday cycling, weight demands, while the Light and Supersonic tube accommodates weight and rolling resistance for a noticeable custom ride. Since their lower wall strength of up to 0.45 mm enhances the risk of punctures, it is essential to infl ate lighter tubes more often.We recommend an all-round worry-free product, the Hermetic Plus tube. Small component = large impact. A poorly constructed or unsuitable tyre rim tape is the cause of many punctures. It is especially important with hollow section rims to use a pressure-resistant rim band which covers the entire rim. The fabric-reinforced Continental Easy Tape rim protector was especially developed for usage under high air pressure conditions. The various widths enable a perfect fi t for all standard rims. The high pressure design for racing cyclists contains as much as 220 PSI, without becoming deformed. The fl at construction type also signifi cantly eases the job of tyre fi tting.

Conti RevoSealant – the end of the spare tyre. (11) For years Continental tyre sealants have been replacing the spare tyre in many vehicles. This technology has now been further enhanced specially to meet requirements and for use in bicycles and tubes. The ammonium- and protein-free RevoSealant provides reliable sealing for punctures and small cuts without chemically corroding the tyre or tube. The versatile RevoSealant is not only useful for repairs, but can also be used for preventive measures and helps protect against malfunctions in tubes, tubular tyres, and tubeless tyres. With suitable tyres RevoSealant can also be used as a sealant for the Tubeless Ready systems which are popular on the mountain bike. RevoSealant, which is specially optimized for use in Continental cycle tyres, can be used in temperatures up to –20 °Celsius. Please carefully follow the accompanying assembly instructions.

Tyre levers Continental tyre levers made with fi bre-reinforced plastic make changing tyres easy as can be, without damaging the rim. Casing construction & tpi – the makeup of the basic tyre structure.The carcass is the basic structure for all tyres. The construction of the carcass, the material and the thickness of the thread depends on the demands that are placed on the tyre. Continental always works with high-quality carcasses made from nylon strings that are fi rst woven and then rubberised. Nylon can be easily combined with rubber and is durable in all types of weather. The thickness of the thread gives the tyre its specifi c attributes. Thread thickness is recorded in tpi (threads per inch) and describes the number of threads per 2.54 cm (1 inch). Fabrics used have 22 tpi, 28 tpi, 60 tpi and 110 tpi. Very fi ne material makes the tyre smoother and protects the carcass from punctures. Coarse fabric is more cut-resistant and makes the tyre more robust. The choice of fabric correlates to the purpose of use. The standard is a three-ply basic carcass. Additional breakers can be put under the tread in order to reinforce the tyre even more and to increase puncture protection. There are different types of breaker builds and materials for different uses whether they are highly elastic specialty rubber, such as our Plus brand or fabric breakers, such as PolyX and Vectran™ in our race tyres. You can see how the tyre is constructed in the tyre specifi cation. Points listed are the number of layers, the sum of the tpi and the type of puncture protection. 3/180 + Vectran™ is equivalent to three layers of a 60 tpi fabric with an additional Vectran™Breaker.

BlackChili Compound – it’s all about how you mix it.In the research and development laboratories for Continental bicycle tyres in Korbach, Germany, the staff and engineers have been looking for the solution to one of the fundamental problems of tyre construction: The running properties of the rubber compound of a tyre are largely determined by three interacting factors: static friction (grip), rolling resistance and mileage. The dilemma is that you improve one of these factors, and in turn, worsen at least one other factor. A tyre with maximum grip wears out faster and rolls slower. If one makes the tyre faster or more durable, then this in turn reduces grip. With the then current highest standard of compound technology, the Activated Silica Compound having already reached a very high standard of compromise, our developers wanted to take compounding to an even higher level. This lead them to venture into new territory, exploring new ways so that in 2005 they made a breakthrough in mixing technology, the fi rst steps to what is now known as BlackChili. This revolutionary compound is based on the latest fi ndings on polymer and other raw material research. For Black Chilli we refi ne newly developed synthetic rubbers with natural rubber with the proven high-performance tread compound. We use these rubbers with special nanometric carbon soot particles, which are optimized in shape and surface properties for best uses for the intended tyre. BlackChili compound reaches an unprecedented of performance. Tyres with BlackChili compound reach an unprecedented level of performance. Compared to the previous best Activated Silica Compound, BlackChili tyres have 26 % less rolling resistance, a 30 % higher friction value (grip) and a 5 % increase in mileage. BlackChili technology never stands still as it is continuously developed and tailored to the individual applications of new Continental tyres as they continue to be produced out of the Korbach factory. Whether on the road or mountain bike, speed and grip advantages are very noticeable. The complex compound technology is so sensitive that tyres with BlackChili compound can only be produced exclusively in our German Korbach factory.

The innovation in puncture protection.

Vectran™ is a multifi bred thermoplastic yarn, made of melted Vectra™ Liquid Crystal Polymer. Vectran™ is the only LCP fi bre in the world, which is made using a spinning process. Reinforcing and matrix fi bres made of Vectran™, are lightweight, extremely durable, have reliable longevity and are fi ve times stronger as steel. With a layer (breaker) of Vectran™ under the tread, the tyre is protected from breakdowns more effi ciently than with a Nylon Double Breaker. This is because a single Vectran™ layer is lighter, more fl exible and stronger than the two nylon layers.

Airtight

The new processing techniques have succeeded in complimenting our existing puncture protection system to result in the new PolyX-Breaker. For the fi rst time we have used polyester as Breaker material and rely on our experience in car tyres, where we have used polyester successfully for many years. The advantage of our new PolyX fabric however lies in the detail. The fi bers are often crossed in the manufacturing process. This gives us a dense fabric with a minimum of space between the individual threads. Result: Whether sharp thorns or large shards, PolyX is failsafe and is very resistant to any kind of foreign body without reducing the rolling resistance.

TirePositioningSystem™The last little bit of what is technically feasible is achieved with the Continental TirePositioning-System. Motorcyclists have already known for ages that a front tyre is subject to different demands than its rear counterpart. The smaller front tyre results in reduced aerodynamic resistance and improved steering. A grip-optimised tread compound provides the necessary traction, particularly for riding through wet corners. The wider rear tyres have more grip and at the same time offer more comfort with their larger contact area. Thanks to a rolling resistance- optimised compound and a larger contact area of the rear tyre, there is less abrasion. Deutsche Technik in detail

PlusBreakerPuncture protection from highly elastic specialty rubber is used between the tread and the carcass. Nearly impenetrable, this puncture protection fends off all types of foreign objects. Even tacks cannot get through. The carcass is effectively protected from damage. Tyres with PlusBreaker can now be found in almost every segment: Be it racing bikes, cyclocross or city/trekking bikes, PlusBreaker guarantees maximum safety, without negatively impacting the riding properties of the tyre. The consistency of the breaker was adjusted so that the tyres do not feel wobbly when taking curves. PlusBreaker is puncture protection through and through. Note: please check the recommended tyre pressure weekly using a manometer. Plus tyres are built very rigidly, making it hard to feel tyre pressure. Tyres used with too little tyre pressure have higher rolling resistance and also wear faster.

Continental Tubeless Tyres for the

Universal System Tubeless.

Tubeless Tyres by Continental work with both UST and Rigida/Nagesti rims and wheels. Tyre and rim form an airtight chamber. A tube is not necessary and pinchfl ats not possible anymore. In comparison to the conventional system, the tyre pressure can be lowered. The comfort of the ride increases.At a lower tyre pressure the tyre defl ects more. The contact patch of the tyre increases and the tread adapts to the ground better. Tubeless tyres allow decreased air pressure and therefore deliver more traction.

DuraSkin

Tyres with DuraSkin sidewall protection have to roll with the punches. These tyres are used in the harshest conditions. On messenger bikes, the tyres skid along curbs, on travel bikes, they cross continents without wearing through and in professional cycling they have to endure tough tests such as Paris-Roubaix. The high-quality polyamide fabric reliably protects the casing of the tyre and protects the tyre from the worst conditions. These tyres stand out with their brown sidewalls.

Continental SafetySystem –

the system of Puncture Protection.

The SafetySystem Puncture Protection is made of a strong and tight Nylon fabric. This fabric is additionally reinforced with Kevlar. The result is a tyre construction that is highly resistant against pinches and cuts. The SafetySystem protects the tyre against debris, thorns and broken glass. The SafetySystem keeps the tyre lightweight and fl exible. It adapts to the rolling motion and keeps the rolling resistance low. The SafetySystem is built in between the tread and the casing. Here it protects the casing fabric and contributes to a long lifespan of the tyre.

Note on weight.

Building light tyres is a stated goal of our developers and employees in production. Occasionally however, there may be some slight variance from the weight stated in the catalogue. This variance results from the tolerances in the width of the tread and fabric rubber lining that cannot be avoided in the manufacturing process of production. The weight listed in the catalogue is based on target weights that were established from previous series and are checked again and again during ongoing production. Deviations of up to 10 % from the target weights thus are possible depending on the model.

Information on tyre pressures.

A tyres air pressure has a great infl uence on the behaviour of the ride experience, the durability (wear) and the rolling resistance (speed). Only the proper operating pressure will render the tyre able to perform to its optimal performance level. Apart from the tyre volume and cyclist dependant load, the purpose of application plays an important role. Wide tyres need less pressure than small tyres, heavy cyclists have to infl ate higher pressures than lighter cyclists. For off road: less is more. On the road: more is usually more!. If tyre pressure is too low, then the wear rate of the tyre can increase. Low pressure can also cause instability issues possibly leading to ageing cracks in the tread and lower puncture resistance. Ageing cracks may occur if the pressure is too high, which may also cause insuffi cient grip and handling.All bicycle tyre systems continuously lose pressure. Check your tyre pressure at regular intervals. Touring bikes and mountain bike riders should check the air pressure at least once a month, racing cyclist once per week. When using light and supersonic tubes, the air pressure must be checked before each ride. Each Continental tyre has the maximum permissible tyre pressure imprinted on its sidewall. For cycling on fi rm ground: Even heavy cyclists should not surpass this, but may fi nd it helpful to ride at the maximum stated pressure. Lighter cyclists are normally well advised to apply two-thirds of the maximum pressure. Average weight cyclists should ride with approximately 80 % of the permissible maximum pressure, to be on the safe side.

Apex

The sidewalls of freeride and downhill tyres are subjected to extraordinarily high loads. A rubber profi le between the carcass layers ensures stability. The Apex sits on the tyre bead and reinforces the sidewalls of the tyre. The tyre does not impact on the rim during rough rides over rocky ground. The tyre stays more upright when cornering. It does not bend over the sides of the rim when subjected to transverse loads, and always stays true to the course.
