COMPETITION AIMThe aim of the competition is to foster engineering and team building in Grades 7 and 8(Middle School) students.
DESIGN STATEMENT
Prior to the Competition Day, students will construct and program a small autonomous
mobile robot using designated pieces from the Lego Robolab Team Challenge (BasicBuilding Set) either provided by the IEEE Ottawa Chapter or already available at the
schools. The robot must follow a sinusoidal black line; remove a can of soup out of a
designated area and then return. Teams will be judged on the Robot completing its tasks,
a Project Report and a Poster as well as Style and Innovation points will be assessed.
RULES
1. Robots must be smaller than 25cm x 25cm in size.
2. All participants shall use the LEGO Team Challenge Set provided by the
competition organizers or kits that are equivalent to the Lego Dacta 9790 or 9794kit. http://www.lego.com/dacta/products/productdetail.asp?number=9790
3. LEGO materials not included in the LEGO Lego Robolab Team Challenge (Basic
Building Set) will result in Team disqualification.
4. No glue or tape is allowed in the construction of Team Robots.
5. Participants shall use the Robolab v2.5 software provided with Lego TeamChallenge Set.
6. During the timed portion of the competition, time will start when the robot startsto move and ends at a designated locations.
7. The robots will start on the competition board in the position of A shown below
with forward edge of the robot (looking down) on the edge of the black line.
8. Robots must start moving within 10 seconds after the run button has been pushed. If they do not, they will receive no score for that portion of the competition.
9. Robots must finish the course from A to B within 10 minutes. If they do not, they
will receive a base score of 5 points unless the robot does not follow the black line(see next rule).
10. Robots must follow the black line to and from the A and B locations. Failure to
do so will result in no score awarded for that portion of the competition.
11. Robots must not leave the game board or stop for more than 15 seconds, otherwise the round will be stopped and points tallied.

12. Robots must stop when the round is completed either at the A location or at alocation designated in the Teams report but within the game board area.
13. Teams shall not contain more than 10 students.
14. Teachers can only act in an advisory role.
15. The game board consists of a 5/8 thick sheet of white melamine board (121.9 cm/ 48 x 203.2 cm / 80 ). The track that the robot must follow is constructed from
3/4 black electrical tape. For practice, the teams can purchase a 4 x 8 melamine
sheet from a local hardware store. The soup can is a full can of Cream ofMushroom soup with 6.8 cm diameter and weighing 340 grams.
16. The robot can come programmed on the day of the competition but it is expectedthat the algorithm and diagram of the program will be available in the report to be
reviewed by the judges. A computer will be available, or teams can bring theirown portable, in order to re-load their program before their actual turn. The teams
will be allocated some practice time in the morning in order to fine tune their
sensors. Please note that lighting conditions might affect your algorithm so it will
be necessary to determine on the day of the competition if you need to change thethreshold values.
17. The Team with the highest overall point score (see below) will be the winner.
Judging and Scoring
1. When a Teams number is called, proceed to the game arena. The Teams roundwill start their round when instructed by a judge to begin.
2. Judges will time and score your round. You may do two rounds and pick your
best score
3. Decisions of the judges are FINAL.
4. A robot will receive time points for completing the course (from A to B to A) asshown below.
5. A robot that leaves the game board will not receive any time points.
6. The following are the point scoring.

The game board is made from a 121.9 cm x 203.2 cm white melamine board. The circleC is 28 cm in diameter. The soup can is located 7 cm from point B towards the centre
of the circle. The centre of the circle C is 14 cm from the nearest edge. The tape track
is made with 1.9 cm black electrical tape and starts 25 cm away from short edge andcentred between the long edges. The track is a sinusoidal of maximum peak of 37 cm
from centre and length 134 cm.
