CHAIRPERSON’S LETTERDear Participants,
Following the success of prior WATEC events, it is my honor and pleasure in inviting you to participate at WATEC Israel 2013.
Due to its continued necessity supported by entrepreneurial culture, Israel has become a Water Solution hub.
One of the most significant challenges in the global arena is to lower the pressure on natural water resources, among other resources, due to the rapid growth of population. It is clear today that technologies can serve as a key to a much more efficient exploitation of natural resources (Water, Soil, Energy & Materials). New technologies and smart solutions are estimated to contribute almost two-thirds of the additional quantities of water needed in the next 30 years.
Bringing together Israeli & international business executives, political decisions makers and leading researchers, WATEC 2013 is a showcase for the most advanced technologies and solutions globally.
I am confident that you will benefit from the exciting range of topics as well as the technological & business solutions that are presented in this event. Sincerely,
Shimon Tal Chairman, WATEC Israel 2013

Mini-Seminar “Applying Water Technology to the Energy Sector”Embassy of the kingdom of the Netherlands
Goal: the mini-seminar aims at stimulating Dutch-Israeli business relations and joint R&D activities in the area of water technology. The mini-seminar is a prologue to the Dutch-Israeli Cooperation Forum taking place on 8-9 December 2013 in Israel. As part of this Forum, the Dutch Prime Minister and several other Ministers will visit Israel together with several B2B missions. Preceding this Forum, the mini-seminar will:
1. Enable participants to extend their network and identify potential partners;
2. Provide input for the B2B water mission of the Dutch-Israeli Cooperation Forum
3. Promote the Dutch water sector in Israel.
Topic: the mini-seminar focuses on applying Dutch-Israeli innovative water technologies to energy-related problems. Dutch Ambassador Veldkamp and Mr. Menno Holterman (CEO Nijhuis, board member of the Wittenburg Council) will address the audience in light of the upcoming Cooperation Forum and opportunities for Dutch- Israeli cooperation in water. How water technology can be applied to energy-related issues will be illustrated from both an academic and business perspective. Prof. Luuk Rietveld (Technical University Delft) will speak about either “connecting desalination with renewable energy” or “valorizing waste water for water supply in industry and agriculture by re-exploiting raw materials and energy”. Mr. Geert van der Wouw (Shell Technology Ventures) will deliver a speech on “challenges and needs around water from the perspective of a major energy company” (to be confirmed).
Target group: Israeli start-ups, water companies, government- and research institutions
Size: 50-100 people
Venue: the Israel Trade Fairs and Convention Center Tel Aviv, event hall 5
Time: from 15:30 until 18:00, October 22th (during Watec 2013)
Organisation: the mini-seminar is organized by the Netherlands Embassy in Tel Aviv (Paul Jansen and Jan-Peter Eveleens) in cooperation with the Israel Export Institute (Niv Morag) and the Economic Department of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Eli Lev).
Press: we will bring photographer, invite journalists and publish a review of the mini-seminar on the Embassy website.
Invitations: sending save the date ASAP but 14 October at the latest.

Relevance of this mini-seminar
Water technology is a priority sector for the Dutch government because Dutch businesses and knowledge institutions have an international competitive advantage in this sector. The government aims to bring together business, knowledge institutions and government organizations to stimulate and focus innovation in water technology.
The international market demands local and integrated water technology solutions. The Dutch competitive advantage with regards to water is knowledge. Hence, the water sector’s strategy is to tap into knowledge residing abroad and to integrate this foreign knowledge with Dutch expertise. Israel is internationally renowned for its water technology and can horizontally complement Dutch expertise, for example when it comes to fundamental research, valorization, startups, incubators, policy and companies. In addition to water technology, Israeli water companies are known for their ability to enter new markets.
Opportunities for Israeli-Dutch cooperation in water
In the field of water technology innovation, Israel offers significant opportunities to Dutch businesses, and vice versa. By joining forces, Israel and the Netherlands can be more successful in international tenders. Both countries complement each other in a number of ways:
1. Israel and the Netherlands are equally strong in water technology and are complementary in some parts. Joint R&D activities will enhance the knowledge base in both countries.
2. Both Israel and the Netherlands seek to export their water technology. By jointly operating in third countries, companies will have a greater chance of winning tenders. Dutch and Israeli businesses indicate that particularly in Africa opportunities exist.
The Israel Fairs Trade and Convention Center Tel Aviv, Israel, October 22-24, 2013
16
The 7th International Exhibition & the 4th International Conference on Water Technologies, Renewable Energy & Environmental Control
3. Israeli and Dutch providers are often unable to offer the full range of demanded products. However, the whole spectrum can be covered when cooperating with an Israeli counterpart. Moreover, preference for either ‘Made in Holland’ or ‘Made in Israel’ fluctuates. The focus of cooperation is on product-market combinations: the process of understanding the market in order to develop specific products for it.
Relation to other events Surrounding the mini-seminar and Watec, two other water technology events will take place:
1. From 5 to 8 November, the Aquatech fair will be hosted in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In design, content and audience, Aquatech is similar to Watec. Mekorot will be present with a delegation of 40 staff members, among other Israeli participants.
2. From 8 to 9 December, the Dutch-Israeli bilateral Cooperation Forum will take place. As stated above, the Dutch Prime Minister and several Ministers as well as their Israeli counterparts will attend this Forum. Water technology is the topic of one of two economic missions that will take place during the Forum.
