The intention is to have a nice selection of merchandise, incluing travel mugs, license plates holders, tervis tumblers, name tags, and sportswear, available to order by the March outing at Camp Honey Creek. Pam also gave us some information that led to our club becoming a member of the Columbia Pro Team for discounted purchasing. I applied to the company, provided our mission statement and our 501C3 status documentaion, and we were accepted. It seems as if we can order from Columbia through the TWFF account at approximately 50% off retail price (probably wholesale price) for our members!!

Beverly Gordon is working together with me this year to identify and contact past donors to thank them for their support and to ask for additional support for our club for the current year. Beverly and I have asked Kay Jackson if we can hold a swap meet at the Brazos River outing in May. We will bring all the past auction items that never received bids and give them away to any member at the outing who wants to take them. We want to encourage members to bring any items they no longer use to that outing and offer to give them away to someone who may use them. You know, clear your space at home, what is no longer of use to you may be treasure to someone else! We don’t mean for this to be a fundraiser, only members’ items to be exchanged with each other. We will hold our final fundraising auction at the Broken Bow outing towards the end of the year. Plenty of time to plan for that one. If any member finds items that would be of value to our club members for auction, please feel free to ask for or make donations. If you visit fly shops while you travel, don’t be shy about requesting donations for our club. Our 501C3 documentation is on the web site, twff.net, on the “About Us” link, and can be downloaded and emailed in pdf format for any retailer. I am looking forward to a successful year of fundraising to help sustain our club’s financial needs.

First Vice President of Membership submitted Karen Gebhardt Membership Report The bottom line lady anglers is we have 56 official members so far this year. And if we break that down we have 19 brand spanking new members. However this is the cool info on those 19. 9 are “Casting for Recovery” participants from last year and 5 are ” Project Healing Waters” participants from last year. That is a WIN WIN. Our TWFF members promote our organization through their dedicated volunteer interests and those blessings come back to us in the form of delightful new members.

Treasurer Report submitted by Marilyn Young

We met all of our income budget goals for 2014 and the new year is starting out well with lots of new memberships and existing members paying their dues for 2015. We have a new budget for 2015 and are looking forward to another great year. Our silent auction at our March outing at Honey Creek should be very successful.

Message from the President By Joyce Davis

That byline doesn’t look right. It seems like Pat’s name should still be there. But there have been changes and I’m replacing an awesome leader. This will be challenging, but with the Carlson’s behind me and a terrific group of leaders on the Executive Board, we will get the job done. Let’s get right to the business. To use Chris Johnson’s words, “The ladies put a hurt on the fish” in the Guadalupe at our outing in Sattler in January. Be sure to read the post outing report on that chilly experience. The plans for the Honey Creek will benefit everyone, beginners and advanced fly fishers. It is packed with activities -- TWFF’s first SPRING FLING! Get your RSVP to the Outing Coordinator so she can plan your stay and meals. Let her know the number of nights you will attend, where you will stay and the number of meals you want to order. Be aware of the cancellation date for the meal reservation. Check out that report; silent auction and new logo merchandise will round out the weekend. Boating shows are going on, TroutFest, Fly Fish TX and Expos – all there for you to investigate in the next couple of months. And did you see that there is a change for the May outing? It will be in a central location so we expect to have a high attendance. Be sure to check out the Pre-Outing report. Shortly after the May outing, TX Council will be putting on the 2nd Annual Expo. You will get more information about that great event in the future. Our fish out at South Fork, CO, in July to BEAT the HEAT will be during high season. Your outing coordinators suggest that if you want to book a float trip, you do so shortly after you get this info. The South Fork Outing Report will be out in April. See you all soon at Camp Honey Creek.

Upcoming Outings

March 20–22: Honey Creek

May 15–17: Brazos River

July 19–24: South Fork, CO

September 18-20 Port Aransas

November 6–8: Broken Bow, OK

Friday was another day of fishing and the mullet mixer which was very well attended. In fact more members were there for the MM than at the dinner on Saturday night; must have been chatter about the entertaining presentation by Jimbo that preceded the outing. Saturday many of us met in the meeting room at 8:00 AM to buddy up with GRTU members and use the GRTU lease access sites to catch some great fish. Chris Johnson from Living Waters Fly Shop organized the day of fishing. It was cold but very productive. Those that chose not to fish camped out in the meeting room with hot chocolate, hot soup, chili, and lots of snacks while they tied flies. Kay Jackson was so pleased that as a fairly new tier she can now use the whip finish tool. Yeah Kay! Others decided to go out a bit later and the GRTU members were such troopers they went out again as well. Our many thanks to Chris and Emily Johnson, Mark Dillow, Raphael Torres, and Rob Freeman our GRTU friends present. There were many of our TWFF members who also are GRTU members who came out to help and fish. Pat and her leadership team: Sheila Anderson, Karen Gebhardt, Joyce Davis, Marilyn Young, Vickie Andrews, Rozlynn Orr, and Ellen Mathews passed over the 2015 leadership to Joyce Davis and her Executive Board of Sheila Anderson, Karen Gebhardt, Tammy Notley, Marilyn Young, Ellen Mathews, Lori McElroy, and Keira Quam. We certainly appreciate each of these wonderful ladies and give them our full support. Joyce presented our behind the scenes guy, Don Carlson with a really cool belt with trout all over it….Don we thank you. Joyce presented Pat with the cutest serving bowl shaped like a fish with big red lips! Pat quickly kissed the red lips and was already thinking about what she would make to fill that big bowl. Pat, we thank you for all the love, care, and great leadership you have given us for the last two years. So Pat, “pat yourself on the back” for a job well done. This wonderful experience was shared by the following folks: Kate Allen, Amanda Allen & Nate Nelson (new members), Vickie Andrews, Sheila Anderson, Janet & Emery Baca, Peggy Carl, Pat & Don Carlson, Beverly & Roger Casey, Joyce Davis, Marilyn Evans, Cheryl Farrell, Susan Gaetz, Karen Gebhardt, Gretchen Gettelman, Beverly Gordon, Britta Hebert, Mary Hulett Jorgen Hog, Kay & Les Jackson, Stormi Johnson, Mary Kain, Mary & Amber Liebermann, Linda Love, Judy Lunn, Lori McElroy, and Cindy Organ. Upcoming Camp Honey Creek Outing by Vickie Andrews

Camp Honey Creek

Hunt, TX March 20-22, 2015

Honey Creek is a prestigious private girls’ camp just west of Kerrville in the beautiful Hill Country. It is complete with cabins and a mess hall. Lodging will be dormitory style in the cabins. Unfortunately there are NO facilities for couples or families at camp, but there are other possible accommodations listed below. We do have a cabin for the men attending Camp. For those of you who have not attended this outing before, it’s a great place to be! If the weather is nasty, the dining hall is huge and will provide ample room for all of us. There is a great deal of waterfront on the campus. You can walk to the creek and easily cast from shore. Wading is not recommended since the banks are steep and there are deep holes in the water. There is also great fishing in the Upper Guadalupe, which is just around the corner. There are several places on the North and South Fork that are accessible at river crossings and can be waded. If you choose to bring your kayak, it can be put in at camp or on the Guad. Most places on the Guadalupe can be paddled in a round trip fashion no need for shuttling . The rate for the week-end will be $105 per person which includes lodging Friday and Saturday nights, breakfast Saturday and Sunday and dinner Saturday night. Not bad, eh!

What to bring: Mullet Mixer dish to share, sleeping bag or bed roll and pillow, towels, waders and boots -optional, 4-5 wt rods with either floating or sink line, wooly buggers, crawfish imitations, briminators, and spider flies. The bunk mats are slippery so bring an old towel to put between your sleeping bag and the mat. BRING YOUR CHECKBOOKS! We will be fishing for sunfish, bass, Rio Grande Cichlids and carp. It should be the start of the bass spawning season…oh, the monsters we could find!

Other Accommodations: • Hunter  House  Inn  and  Suites  in  Ingram,  TX      • 830.367.2377  • Best  Western    in  Kerrville  830.896.1313  • La  Quinta  in  Kerrville    830.896.9200

But wait there is more: TWFF is putting on a SPRING FLING! We will have a speaker after the Friday night Mullet Mixer, Saturday morning, member Shannon Drawe will teach us how to photograph fish and give an introduction to the Go Pro Camera. Later in the morning member Sharon

TWFF.NET February 2015 • 7

Leissner will teach beginning fly casting and tune up casting. And Gary Davison from Houston will teach an intro to Spey Casting to the advanced casters. Casting will go on as long we have interested members. After lunch (we can eat left-overs from the Mullet Mixer and make cold cut sandwiches) we will give beginning fly tying instruction and fly tying tips along with knots , matching tippet with flies and more. Wait, we aren’t finished yet. Deposit those tax refunds quickly. Bring your checkbooks! We will have a silent auction for new merchandise donated to the club. It’s a great opportunity to find a bargain. And it will be an opportunity to purchase new TWFF logo merchandise. We will also be selling raffle tickets for a quilt drawing for Reel Recovery. Reel Recovery is an opportunity for men coping with all forms of cancer to attend a free retreat.

RSVP NOW TO Vickie Andrews – [email protected] Let Vickie know the dates you will attend, where you will stay, RV Park, Hotel or reserve a bunk in Camp. Make your reservation for # of meals, too!

Please DO NOT contact camp for reservations! • Cost for the week-end - $105 (INCLUDES 3 meals at $12.00 …the food is great!) • If you do not want the meals, (allergies or ?) – cost is $93 • You may pay Vickie by cash or check (payable to Camp Honey Creek) at the camp . • MUST RSVP BY MAR 9. If you must cancel after Mar 9, you will still owe $36 to cover the food

purchased for your reservation.

Driving Directions to Camp Honey Creek Travel on I- 10 W to exit 505 (Harper Rd)

Go south (right) on Harper Rd to HWY 27 in Kerrville

(approx. 2.5 mi)

At Hwy 27 go west (right) to Ingram (approx. 4.5 mi)

As you enter “downtown” Ingram, stay in the left lane. At the light, Hwy 27 goes to the right (to Mtn Home)

TWFF and they will let you in. Follow the road around to the right and up the hill to

Camp Honey Creek grounds.

FYI: The last time we visit this spot, there was plenty of fish and plenty of big ones at that. So, be sure to view out outing details here http://www.twff.net/media/outings/Camp%20Honey%20Creek2015.pdf

Conservation Keep shopping at Walmart! In November, Walmart Acres for America donated a $525,000 Grant for the Powder Horn Ranch Acquisition on the coast. $50 million is needed for the project that will include a state park in the future. Nature Conservancy, TPWD and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation worked together in the acquisition. 34.5 million in the next 3 years will come from the BP oil spill funds. The remainder of the money has been raised from private donations and trusts. Go to Google and insert this in the search line youtu.be/3XXBU31OZ9U to view this awesome aerial footage of this beautiful coastal area and site of a future State Park and wildlife management area! Upcoming events and notices: Fly Fish Texas! 2015 - MARCH 14

Fly fishing clubs and anglers from across Texas come to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center to share fly fishing tips and techniques and teach them to others. Aimed at the novice fly fisher, this event is designed to teach you how to tie a fly, cast it and catch a fish with it, all in the same day.

Fly Fish Texas emphasizes hands-on learning and immediate application of newly aquired skills. Visitors can collect aquatic insects from the center's streams, tie a fly to imitate one of those insects under the supervision of a skilled tier, learn to cast it from a casting instructor certified by the Federation of Fly Fishers, then use it to catch a rainbow trout, catfish or sunfish from one of TFFC's stocked ponds or streams.

Throughout the day, experienced fly-tiers will be demonstrating and teaching fly-tying in the Anglers Pavilion on a one-on-one basis. In addition, group instruction in beginning fly-tying will be offered in the Hart-Morris Conservation Center classroom beginning at noon. Both are offered on a walk-up basis.

Beginning casting instruction will take place continuously in the Conservation Center parking lot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the Conservation Center Room B, attend fly-fishing 101 at 10 a.m. and learn about essential flies for Texas fresh water at 11 a.m.

TWFF.NET February 2015 • 10

Fly-fishing kayak style will be presented on the shore of the casting pond at 2 p.m.

Vendors will be displaying and selling fly-fishing gear, and seminars will brief visitors on where and how to fly-fish in fresh and salt waters for a variety of species. The program will include presentations on fly-fishing the Brazos River, 3 p.m. in the Conservation Center Room B, and the history of rainbow trout in North America, Anheuser-Busch Dive Theater at 3 p.m.

Other sessions will focus on caring for fly-fishing equipment, Anheuser-Busch Dive Theater at 10 a.m., choosing a fly line, Anheuser-Busch Dive Theater at 1 p.m., and fishing the slam of B.A.S.S. in southern rivers, Conservation Center Room B at 2 p.m.

Kayak use will be demonstrated on the casting pond. Do-it-yourself fly-fishing for rainbow trout, sunfish and catfish will be available all day in TFFC's ponds and streams.

Food service will be available onsite, or attendees may bring a picnic. TFFC's regularly scheduled dive shows will take place in the dive theater at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and will be followed by tram tours of the hatchery.

Fly Fish Texas takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free with regular paid admission.

Venue Change for May Outing The drought continues to hit various areas of Texas, and the northwest quadrant of our state is no exception. The lack of consistent fall rains has impacted the chain of ponds in the LBJ National Grasslands outside of Decatur, which has prompted us to move the May outing to central Texas. We’ve been monitoring the ponds for the past year, and the water levels are either good or bad—no in between. Even if we have good spring rains, we believe the erratic water levels have probably taken its toll on the fish. We were looking forward to hosting an outing in “that neck of the woods” to serve our TWFFers in Decatur, Wichita Falls and west. But this is not the year. So, we’re striking out for another new venue: The Brazos River near Aquilla, off I-35 between West and Hillsboro. It is centrally located and an easy drive from our major cities. Those of you with kayaks and canoes are going to love this! This is one of the prettiest sections of the Brazos with clear water, limestone cliffs, easy-to-wade gravel bottoms and bars, perfect for a day of paddling. For those who prefer to wade, there is good access points near our accommodation. Speaking of that, we’ll be staying at Latham Springs Baptist Camp and Retreat Center http://www.lathamsprings.com/ . We will reserve a dorm-style cabin with a meeting room, spots in the RV hookup area and a few rooms in the onsite motel. There is even a large lake on the camp property to fish from the banks, or to use a kayak, canoe or float tube. Jerry Hamon, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Angler Educator and member of Red River Fly Fishers will be our speaker to teach us how to fish from our kayaks more efficiently. We’ll have much more detailed information in March and future newsletters, but mark your calendar for May 15-17 for The Brazos River! Kay & Les Jackson, Linda Whiddon May Outing Chairs

Casting for Recovery Texas Going Strong Ten Years Later In 2015, the Texas Program of Casting for Recovery (CfR) enters its eleventh year of service to Texas women surviving breast cancer. Since its inception in 2005, the program has served more than 220 Texas women at one of the sixteen retreats held in Central and North Texas. Casting for Recovery’s innovative program focuses on breast cancer survivorship and improving quality of life through a unique program that combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. The retreats offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life and experience healing connections with other women and nature. CfR’s retreats are open to breast cancer survivors of all ages, in all stages of treatment and recovery, and are free to participants. The concept is unique. On a physical level, the gentle, rhythmic motion of fly casting can be good therapy for the upper body as a way to encourage increased mobility in the arm for women who have had surgery or radiation as part of their breast cancer treatment. On an emotional level, women are given the opportunity to experience a new activity in a safe environment amongst a supportive group of peers. The retreats provide resources to help address quality of life issues after a breast cancer diagnosis, and a new outlet – fly fishing – as a reprieve from the everyday stresses and challenges of cancer. Two Texas retreats are held each year, a spring retreat at Joshua Creek Ranch in Boerne (west of San Antonio) and a fall retreat at Still Water Lodge in Glen Rose (southwest of Fort Worth). Any woman who has received a breast cancer diagnosis and resides in Texas is eligible to apply for either retreat. Fourteen women are randomly selected to attend each retreat and all meals, lodging, counseling, instruction, and supplies are provided at no cost to participants. CfR was founded in 1996 by two women, a breast cancer reconstructive surgeon and a professional fly fisher. In 2015, CfR plans to hold 40 retreats in 35 states and serve close to 600 women! Find out more at: www.castingforrecovery.org The CfR Texas Program is locally funded, promoted, organized, and executed by an all-volunteer staff, and receives significant funding through the generosity of clubs and individuals in the Texas fly fishing community. For more information, please contact Susan Gaetz, Program Coordinator for CfR Texas, at (512) 940-0246 or [email protected].

Meet Your Board of Directors

Marilyn Young, Treasurer

I’ve lived in Georgetown, Texas for 33 years since graduating from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and moving to Austin to work for IBM Corporation. I am presently self-employed as a legal transcriptionist doing oil and gas hearings for the Texas Railroad Commission. My husband Harris and I have been married for almost 30 years. We have three grown children, two Aggies and a Longhorn. Our oldest son works for D.E. Harvey Builders and lives in Houston, our oldest daughter lives in LA and works for Warner Bros., and our youngest daughter is in grad school at Texas A&M. My husband Harris is an experienced fly fisher and even ties his own flies. We have enjoyed several fly-fishing vacations to Colorado and have fished the Arkansas and Conejos and Colorado Rivers there. We hope to fish the Gunnison River soon. I did not grow up fishing although I remember fishing with my granddad a few times with a cane pole on the banks of the creek by our house in rural Ohio. I joined TWFF in November of 2012 at the Honey Creek outing and have loved being a member of the club and the camaraderie of the women and I have truly fallen for the sport of fly-fishing. I have a lot to learn but the club is a great place to do that. The women are fantastic and the more experienced members are willing to share their knowledge through casting lessons and clinics and on-the-water coaching. I became the TWFF treasurer in January of 2014 and am truly honored to serve and to be a member of this great women’s group.
