MESSAGE FROM CONFERENCE PRESIDENT KAY ROACH In early September, the president of the Florida Conference, United
Methodist Women – Kay Roach, informed the leadership of the East Central
District of the resignation of its president, Melba Swagler. The resignation
was effective as of August 30, and while losing a district president leaves a
gap in leadership, Kay had good news as well. “Linda Gustafson has agreed
to be your interim district president for the remainder of the year. With the
help of our conference V.P., Judith Pierre Okerson . . . I have faith that this
will all come together and make your last two events for the year a success.”
The Committee on Nominations for the East Central District will be working
towards presenting candidates for all empty positions. We strongly
encourage our members to submit the names of possible nominees so that
we will have a full slate of district officers to begin 2019.
The 13th Annual East Central District meeting is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 20.
This will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Oviedo, 263 King Street, Oviedo, FL 32765.
The theme of this year’s meeting is “The Sisterhood of Grace,” and keynote speaker will be Kay
Roach, President, Florida Conference of United Methodist Women.
Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the meeting is scheduled from 9:30
a.m.-12:30 p.m.. Cost: $12.00, includes lunch and annual book; $2.00 for
book only. Deadline for registration is October 14.

A special program on the Sacred Space of Prayers
was held on July 28, 2018. It was organized and
sponsored by the United Methodist Women at Faith
United Methodist Church in Orlando.
What is prayer? We
ought to know!
Prayer is the sacred
space where we connect
with God, talk with God,
and express our deepest
needs for hope –
listening by being very
still. Prayer provides us with a sacred space to
encounter God for personal formation. It is in such
moments with God that transformation can happen,
that God's guidance is given, requests are made
and commitments are solidified.
One member of the unit, Rebecca Raspberry,
experienced a sacred moment with God. She said,
"I remember when we found out my husband had
cancer. The first night we spent in the hospital I did
not sleep at all. I prayed for my husband, as I was
being ministered to by angels throughout the night.
I felt God's presence in the room. I felt such peace
in the midst of the storm as I'd never felt before."
We were honored to have as our speaker, Rev.
Dianne E. Davis, the pastor of Conway United
Methodist Church in Orlando. Rev. Dianne believes
that the church's mission is to be present in the
world and to minister in diverse ways to the poor,
the oppressed, the outcast and the downtrodden.
While working for the Department of Social
Services for 20
years, she
pursued a
Bachelor of
Science
Degree in
Behavioral
Science. She
then matriculated from Wesley Theological
Seminary with a Master of Divinity. In 2010, she
graduated from the United Theological Seminary
with a Doctorate in Ministry. Pastor Dianne held
membership in Peninsular-Delaware Annual
Conference before relocating to Central Florida.
In her presentation, Rev. Davis emphasized the
power of prayer, and followed with a Q&A session.
It was an inspirational experience for all who
attended, including Pastor Matt Findley.
But you, my friends, keep on building yourselves up on your most sacred faith.
Pray in the power of the Holy Spirit (Jude 1:20)

Sunday, August 26 was a special day for United
Methodist Women at First United Methodist Church
in Oviedo. All of the unit’s Circles participated with
servant hearts at all three services.
The congregation viewed videos at each service,
informing them about international and local
missions sponsored by United Methodist Women.
The unit members presided over the lighting of the
candles, served as ushers and greeters,
participated in the 9:30 a.m. praise team worship,
and sang in the 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. choirs.
Informational tri-folds
illustrating each of the
eight Circles were set
up in the Fellowship
Hall for display. A
large collection of
lamps, brought from the homes of United Methodist
Women homes, was the backdrop for an
inspirational sermon by Pastor Patina Ripkey, as
she spoke on “Living With Your Lights On.” All were
blessed who attended this year’s United Methodist
Women Sunday services!
❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖
The United Methodist Women at First United Methodist Church Oviedo hosts a Women’s Night of Fellowship
four times each year. This event allows the members of the eight Circles, and their guests, to enjoy dinner and
fellowship with one another. The next event will be held on Tuesday, November 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the
Fellowship Hall, and will be hosted by both the Friendship and Mary Martha Circles.
Everyone will enjoy a delicious meal along with a special program, the election and installation of new officers,
presentation of the 2019 Budget, Reading Program Certificates, Special Recognition Award, Memorial
Recognitions, 2019 missions, and the collection of the World Thank Offering. Everyone is invited to come and
encouraged to bring a guest. If you are interested in attending, please contact President Denise Clonts by
email at [email protected] or by phone at (407) 257-0925.

On behalf of Clermont United Methodist Women, Blanche Jean Gibson and Evelyn
Rose presented a check to Linda Krupski, the found of LovExtension. United
Methodist Women of Clermont believe in, and are very supportive of, the mission
of this organization. This group assists the elderly and disabled in South Lake
County with food, social visits and many other needs. The clients of the program
are sometimes homebound and dependent on someone to come by with food to
help stretch their limited budgets or to provide valuable information about social
services that may be available to them.

It is never too early to
start shopping and
getting ready for the
holidays! The women
at Clermont United
Methodist Church
have been working all
summer, creating beautiful items to be sold or
raffled at their Holiday Bazaar. The bazaar will
feature a unique boutique, a Holiday Shoppe, a
general store, a “Made with Love” Shoppe, North
Pole and opportunity drawings. A few of the items
sold at these shops include homemade jelly and
jam, knitted hats, floral arrangements, jewelry and
handbags. At the North Pole you can have your
picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
The opportunity drawing quilt was designed and
quilted by Clermont United Methodist women, Jan
Becherer and Patti Hackenberg, and bound by
Rosemary Yoder. It is 78” x 90,” so it fits a queen
bed. The pattern is Sunny Lanes, and it is very
beautiful. Raffle tickets are on sale now or can be
purchased at the
bazaar, $1 for one or
6 for $5
The Holiday Bazaar
is one of the big
fundraisers the
Clermont United
Methodist Women have each year to raise money
to help support local missions. So besides
purchasing a beautiful item, your money will go
towards helping others in the community.
Come and shop on Saturday, November 10, 2018,
from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at First United
Methodist Church of Clermont, 950 Seventh Street,
Clermont, FL 34711. See you there!

If you’ve never been boating on the St. Johns, you missed out on a really lovely
experience! The ladies of Deltona United Methodist Women had the opportunity to
experience Florida’s flora and fauna in a completely natural environment on
August 21, 2018. The two-hour St. Johns River Eco Tour was on a comfortable,
covered pontoon boat, with easy views to both sides of the river. Lunch was
afterwards at “The Swamp House” – perched overlooking the St. Johns at the
DeBary Marina. The food was delicious, the views were truly beautiful, and the
fellowship was fabulous!
This is the third year that the Deltona unit has gathered its members together for
selected fellowship events during the summer hiatus. We just can’t seem to wait
until September each year, and even though we may be without some of our
“snow bird” members, attendance for this unique boat tour was excellent. It is truly a unique way to learn about,
and appreciate, the glorious beauty of Florida.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT ECONOMIC INEQUALITY?
Be a part of the “Living wage for all campaign: Farm Worker Postcard Action.” Let us join with the National Farm Worker Ministry and women leaders of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) to call on Wendy’s, the last of the five major fast food companies, to sign the Fair Food Agreement.
Fair food agreements improve wages and working conditions of farm workers and guarantee the right of independent monitoring of compliance with those agreements. Sign postcards provided at the East
Central District (ECD) Annual Meeting on October 20, or go to unitedmethodistwomen.org to download your own card to petition Wendy’s to sign the Fair Food Agreement.
Proclaim “Time’s Up” on low wages, poor working conditions and sexual violence in the fields. Take some postcards home with you for other members to sign.
Provide contact information on the “Economic Inequality Interest Sign Up Sheet” if interested in learning more about United Methodist Women’s economic justice work.
Count all signed postcards and fill out “What We Did” reporting form.
Mail by October 30th to United Methodist Women National Office Living Wage for All Postcard Campaign/Carol Barton, 475 Riverside Dr.,15th floor, New York, NY 10115.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
WITH SOCIAL ACTION?
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
FOUR QUADRENNIAL (2016-2020) PRIORITY ISSUES:
Climate Justice – reduce carbon footprint emissions of corporations and individuals
Criminalization of Communities of Color and Mass Incarceration – interrupt the
school-to-prison pipeline
Economic Inequality – a living wage for all.
Maternal & Child Health – decrease maternal mortality; develop and network of
women’s health advocates for access to health care and education

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT ECONOMIC INEQUALITY? (continued from page 6)
If you picked up postcards at the Mission Sampler last month, bring the signed cards from your unit, with your “Economic Inequality Interest Sign Up Sheet,” to the ECD Annual Meeting at Oviedo, First United Methodist Church on October 20th and turn into Pam Anders, ECD Social Action Coordinator, who will mail them to the National Office.
OR
If no one from your unit is attending the ECD Annual Meeting, mail all your postcards and “Economic Inequality Interest Sign Up Sheet” to Pam Anders, First United Methodist Church, 950 Seventh St., Clermont, FL. 34711 by October 22, where she will mail all ECD postcards to the United Methodist Women National Office. The National Office will ask for a meeting of Wendy’s management to personally deliver the cards and raise our concerns with them.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO ELECT CANDIDATES COMMITTED TO
TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF WOMEN, GIRLS & FAMILIES?
Through our vote, we can change the policies that negatively affect the well-being and status of women and
girls across the globe. While 2018 is not a presidential election year, there are many other races coming up at
the federal, state and local level, including:
All 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives
One-Third of all United States Senators
Thirty-six state governors and three United States Territory governors
328 city mayors
Go to unitedmethodistwomen.org and click on the “2018 Candidate Checklist: A Questionnaire for Candidates
Seeking Election” to gauge whether the candidate is committed to attaining equality, justice and fairness for
those in society who are often left at a disadvantage. Pose a question to the candidate in a way that reflects
what matters most to you and your state. Take the time to VOTE in November! Some sample questions from
the questionnaire:
What is your plan to invest in schools in marginalized communities made up primarily of people of color,
so that the outcomes of the students in those school are the same as in wealthier, predominantly white
neighborhoods?
What do you consider core elements of an affordable housing and homelessness reduction strategy?
What kind of initiatives will you support to protect our air, water, and land and ensure that the
responsible agencies have the resources they need to enforce environmental protections?
Do you support or oppose tax reform that requires those making over $1 million per year, as well as
corporations, to pay their fair share, in addition to closing loopholes that enable companies to keep their
earnings offshore and avoid paying taxes.
Do you support or oppose protecting immigrant families from fear of separation and deportation?

For almost 150 years, United Methodist Women have been involved
in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading
Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The
purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women
members to:
Expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission.
Increase sensitivity to all human beings—their needs, interests and concerns.
Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today.
Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life.
Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge.
Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.
