Secretary’s ReportI would like to present the Association’s Annual Report to all members of the Moore Park South East Cricket Association.

Unfortunately once again we had a small drop in team numbers for the 2011/2012 season, which restricted us to four grades. On a positive note this enabled us to have four very evenly matched grades where most teams were vying for semi-final positions right up to the final round.

In the main competition we had a total of 27 teams compete over four grades with the Premiership winners being 1st Grade – Souths Juniors; 2nd Grade – Botany United; 3rd Grade – Clovelly; 4th

Grade – University of NSW. The Club Championship was taken out by Clovelly who had teams entered in each of the four grades.

In the Twenty20 competition we had a total of 8 teams compete in a fairly even competition with Souths Juniors 1 coming out as deserved premiers. The highlight of the season was a trip to Bowral where we played three Twenty20 matches over the course of a day at the historic Bradman Oval. My thanks to Barry Casey (Doncaster) for his efforts in organising this day.

In a competition affected by rain our Martin Shield team qualified for the quarter-finals but unfortunately were beaten by Parramatta.

My thanks to our Patron Mr Harry Solomons and Kingsgrove Sports Centre, the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Football Club, Kookaburra, the Kensington War Memorial Club and the Doncaster Hotel for their ongoing support and sponsorship of the Association.

The Association’s financial position is sound, as detailed in the financial pages of this report and I would like to thank Paul Brien for his efforts as Acting Treasurer, taking the duties on top of his various duties as President of the Association.

Finally I would like to thank all fellow Board Members, club delegates, umpires, scorers, volunteers and players who make up the competition and make it a success.

Yours in cricket

David PowerSecretary

President’s ReportLadies and Gentlemen:

The 2011-2012 season marked the completion of 17 seasons since Moore Park, South Sydney and the Catholic Association joined to form the Moore Park South East Cricket Association.

The start of our season saw a drop in teams to just 27 despite intensive preseason marketing via websites and local press to local juniors and affiliated associations. The Board decided to run the competition for the season over four grades and graded nominations accordingly with what proved to be generally a very even competition.

The season finished with all Minor Premiers in all grades missing out on Grand Final berths and in fact two clubs, Botany United and UNSW winning from fourth position well done to those clubs. South’s Juniors triumphed in first grade winning the Premiership and at the same time notching up 23 consecutive grand final appearances. This is truly a remarkable feat and shows what a solid group of players they are with several of their current side featuring in many of those grand finals. This mighty club also took out the 20/20 competition for the second season in a row. My congratulations also to the Clovelly club who not only won the 3rd grade premiership but were Club Champions as well. I take this opportunity of also congratulating the many individuals whose achievements are recorded further in this report. The season did not enjoy the same success on the representative front as was the case in previous years. We did manage a victory over Northern Suburbs but our Martin Shield campaign was hampered with the weather although we managed to get to the quarter finals. Unfortunately the trip to Bathurst was postponed this year due to unforeseen circumstances, however the traditional Plank match will take place in 2012-2013 in Sydney.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those “behind the scenes” personnel involved in the rep season. Manager of our second team Bill Glacken , our scorers Gary & Maria Fulford whom without their expertise in scoring we simply wouldn’t know what the result was…..thank you both well done. A special thanks to Hippo who not only managed our Martin Shield but captained and organized selection trials etc as well as liaising with selectors , John Chalmers , Greg Leslie and Chair Dave Power, all of whom I thank as well.

Once again Dave “20/20” Power put together a 20/20 Sunday competition which is now in its sixth year. My thanks to Dave for his continued commitment to this competition which is growing every year.

Mid-season unfortunately also saw the passing of former Association Secretary Steven Silcock. “Silks” as he was known played many seasons for the Kingsford Apaches and was the first life member of that cricket club, a testament in itself to a man who not only loved playing the game but was very much an inspiration behind the scenes making sure the club carried forward from season to season. I had the privilege of working closely with Silks when he was Association Secretary, a role he filled admirably and only stepped aside due to the illness that would eventually claim his life. Our sincere sympathy goes to his wife Amanda and his family. I assure you all he never will be forgotten by our cricketing community. Rest in peace Silks….

For an association to be successful, it needs support. I would like to thank a number of people for their support in season 2011-2012-:

Noel Moig Agencies for the KOOKABURRA SPONSORSHIP. We are in the final year of a three year agreement with Kookaburra .This sponsorship is used directly to assist in the ever increasing ground fees set by the landlords of our grounds. I am pleased to report this year saw only minor fee increase due directly to the monies from this sponsorship. My thanks to both Noel Moig and Cameron Eves of Noel Moig Agencies and the team at Kookaburra for their ongoing support.

Mr. Harry Solomon’s, Managing Director Kingsgrove Sports. Harry is not only our Patron but a longtime supporter of park cricket in the South Sydney area having not only played many games in the former South Sydney Cricket Association but also represented that Association. Harry has a true understanding of Association cricket and what it takes to be a successful association and our success is helped by his support both at club and Association level. I thank Harry and the team at Kingsgrove Sports for their support and I urge all clubs to visit Kinsgrove Sports for all your teams and individual cricket requirements.

South Sydney Juniors Club. Not only do we get a great deal for our presentation evening but the club also financially contributes to ground costs each year. To the Board of Souths Juniors my thanks for your continued support and the Association looks forward to continuing our relationship for many years to come.

Kensington War Memorial RSL. Thank you to the Board for the use of the club for delegates and Board meetings. The club has become our base for meetings and we are truly grateful to be allowed the use of the various meeting rooms. Thank you also for the trophy cabinet that houses our perpetual trophies.

Centennial Park Trust, Botany Council, Randwick Council. Our thanks to these organisations and there staff who ensure our grounds are maintained each week.

Doncaster Hotel. The Doncaster Hotel is now in its fourth year as a sponsor of our representative sides. My thanks to Michael Paterson and the team at the Doncaster Hotel for their continued support. I would urge all members to try the bistro at the Donny…….the food is fabulous and don’t forget to try your hand at trivia on trivia night and of course TEXAS polka ………thanks again to the DONNY.

Umpires. My thanks to the umpires who each Saturday control our fixtures. Our numbers have fallen in the past few seasons, however John Chalmers is as always busy recruiting from other Associations. My thanks to John for his persistence in ensuring we have the necessary umpires each week. I would also encourage any person who wishes to be an umpire to contact John. Thanks again to our umpires.

MPSECA BOARD- The Board this year was smaller than previous years with the positions of Treasurer and Secretary not filled at the AGM and despite numerous requests at delegate meetings no person nominated throughout the season. I thank those who were on the Board for their support and untiring contribution as volunteers to make this Association the success it is.I would like to particularly thank our Vice President, Dave Power who again stepped up this year to not only fulfill his role as a Vice President but also the role of Secretary as well as run 20/20 etc…..well done Dave your efforts are appreciated.

Season 2011-2012 has concluded and as I reported earlier our numbers were down on previous seasons. It is absolutely imperative that we increase our numbers if we are to survive in future years. The Association will embark on a local advertising/editorial campaign in season 2012-2013. However individual Clubs need to look at their personnel as well and build around the current group with local juniors from schools in their area. I note both UNSW and Clovelly have a number of young players 16-18 years in their ranks and this has certainly helped them win Premierships this season with Clovelly also adding the Club Championship.

Unfortunately your Board member numbers are also getting smaller which makes it very difficult to market the Association regularly and continually. I am asked regularly how we can increase numbers etc, the answer really revolves around the need to get more volunteers to join the Board in order to spread the work load and attend to this area of need . We really need a minimum of three new Board members to join the Board in season 2012-2013. Again I ask all club members to give joining the Board some serious thought, it can be a rewarding experience particularly since meetings are minimised. I believe multiple teams particularly should have a voice on the Board, so please give some serious consideration as its time to start building the Association again which frankly cannot be done whilst current Board members are doing multiple roles due to insufficient Board numbers.

I look forward to seeing you all on the park in 2012-2013………….again my thanks for your continued support, I commend this report to the members.

Paul Brien President

Umpires reportOn behalf of the board, I would like to thank all the umpires for their dedication and assistance in making the 2011/2012 season a tremendous success.

I hope that all the umpires will be back raising the finger once again for the 2012/2013 season. Thanks once again for your help.

Representative Season Report

As everyone in this association knows, I love the competition of Representative cricket, especially Martin Shield. When the question was raised on who we were going to ask and pick as the manager of the team, I immediately asked for the job. I wanted the job because I know the professionalism and organisation required, which I had learnt from Barry Casey from the previous years that he was at the helm. At this point I want to thank Barry for all the hard work he put into the previous years that have formed the foundation for this and future teams to compete in the Martin Shield. Also I want to give a big thanks to Marie and Gary Fulford firstly for keeping score at all our Representative games but also for their support, professionalism, catering and for the laughs. They will be truly missed as they are having a bit of a break from cricket for a while.

This year saw a number of seasoned and experienced rep players leave our team for personal, family and work reasons, so there were a few holes to fill in this season’s team. After putting the word out and speaking to teams we came up with a strong squad to choose from. For the rep team we want talented players from all grades, so it was great to see a couple of 3 rd graders and a few 2nd

graders in the squad, however most positions were filled by 1st Graders, that’s understandable. Thanks to all players involved and a big thank you to Coogee Bay Hotel CC and Coogee Palace CC for their strong involvement.

Game 1: vs Georges River/St. George at Bexley Oval, Bexley

MPSECA 4/107 def Georges River/St. George 104

Georges River/St.George won the toss and elected to bat, as you do in Martin Shield with hopes of on a high total and then putting the pressure on in the next innings, but that was not to be for Georges River/St.George. They stumbled their way to 104 with only one of their bats hitting over 20. Cam McCormack (1/17 off 6) and Beau Mulraney (2/14 off 10) opened up the bowling with tight spells, supported by Trent Bornstein (1/6 off 2), Matt Plant (1/33 off 5) and Jeremy Ruz being the standout with (5/30 off 12).

Although we were chasing a low score, we all know that you can’t be complacent, especially in Martin Shield. An unfortunate start saw our captain Matt Donovan dismissed early, but Mick Ekhart batted very well for a solid 41 off 61 balls. There were 2 more quick dismissals before Anthony Sinclair not out 6 off 36 balls and Scott Obrien 34 off 36 balls joined each other for a patient partnership of 45 runs. However with only 10 runs to hit for victory the weather began to change with the rain clouds threatening our game. So Anthony decided to hit 6 of those 10 runs to help Scott out and get us to victory as it began to pour.

Game 2: vs Sutherland at Marrickville Oval, Marrickville

WASHED OUT – DRAW

12

Page 13: Contents - Cricket Web viewAfter putting the word out and speaking to teams we came up with a strong squad to choose from. ... Bhushan Rele also scored well with 233 @ 46

Game 3: vs Camden at Memorial Oval, Ingleburn

MPSECA 106 lost to Camden 8/107

Camden won the toss and sent us in to bat on a pitch that resembled the curves of a kid’s slippery slide on one half side of the pitch. It had rained the night before and there may have been holes in the covers in certain spots. This was going to be a tricky pitch for both sides to bat on, especially for the first batting side. All our bats were very cautious from the get go so that didn’t help us get any sort of start with only Tim Scullard getting into his 20’s off 49 balls.

Only defending 106 runs, was always going to be difficult, but we were all very confident with our bowlers and the way the pitch was playing. Matt Wood (2/34 off 12) and Beau Mulraney (1/26 off 5) opened the bowling with both capturing the openers early for 10 runs each. Supporting them were Jeremy Ruz (1/17 off 4) and Cam McCormack (4/24 off 10) a great bowling spell which almost got us the match. Camden’s 3 and 4 were settling in and looked quite comfortable before Cam dismissed both of them with some great catches from the field. Like the GEORGES RIVER/ST.GEORGE game, storm clouds started to loom and we were quietly hoping for rain because it seemed a loss was on the cards. The rain stayed away for us to finish the game, Cam got us back into the while the last 2 bats were looking shaky and it was nail biting stuff we thought we were going to roll them with 8 runs to get. It was not to be. Overall it was a great game on a not so great pitch. This loss places us 5th place overall all in the Martin Shield competition and qualifies us for the finals.

Game 4: (Qualifying Semi-Final) vs Parramatta at Ted Burge Sportsground, Wentworthville

MPSECA 143 lost to Parramatta 209

Unfortunately this was a rain affected match with buckets of rain falling the Saturday night. We were doubtful about getting any sort of play on the following Sunday. We weren’t contacted by Parramatta regarding the weather, so we still showed up because the weather had cleared. Originally we were supposed to play at Merrylands Oval, but when we arrived there we saw that half the field was under water so the Parramatta manager phoned around for other pitches we could try to play the game on. At this point I must inform you that Parramatta was higher on the ladder than us and could have decided to call it a rain affected draw and in doing so would technically win the match and move onto the Semi Final, however I must commend Parramatta’s manager firstly and then their players on showing great sportsmanship on trying their hardest to get some sort of game happening.

After some time he’d organised a couple of synthetic pitches at Ted Burge Sportsground Wentworthville. We all drove over to have a look at it and it too was soaked. After having a good look at the pitches the umpires decided that only one was safe enough to play on but we were going to have to wait for it to dry out a little. Our boys, with some gentle persuasion from me, got out to the pitch with a spade and started to scrape as much of the water off the pitch as they could, while Jeremy Ruz had a great idea and went down to a local hardware store and buy a squeegee or a broom to help get the water off. In the end we were delayed by 2 hours, which meant both teams would bowl 39 overs.

Winning the toss we sent Parramatta in to bat, because we thought the outfield would be slow and the ball would get soggy and be hard to hit runs with. That was not to be. Opening the bowling was Cam McCormack (3/49 off 8) and Stuart Kidd (2/52 off 11) supported by Tim Scullard (0/14 off 2), Jeremy Ruz (1/47 off 10) and Ash Azar (3/42 off 8). With the reduction of time Parramatta basically came out with guns blazing from the get go by hitting an average of 5 runs off every over, which made it hard for our bowlers but we persevered and eventually got them all out for 209.

13

Page 14: Contents - Cricket Web viewAfter putting the word out and speaking to teams we came up with a strong squad to choose from. ... Bhushan Rele also scored well with 233 @ 46

We started well with matching the 5 runs an over needed, however with the loss of some quick wickets it wasn’t long before the run rate slowed to just 3 per over, which wasn’t good, until our standout batsmen for this day Ash Azar (37 runs off 47 balls) and Scott Obrien (49 runs off 39 balls) came together with a great partnership and started to turn things around for us. All of us started to gain hope, but this was short lived by an absurd and dud decision by the umpire giving Ash out LBW, which was clearly not out and Scott out to a classic catch. That left us with another huge effort with 120 runs still to get and with the pressure of only having 5 wickets in hand and trying to get another dominating partnership going. Unfortunately it all went downhill from there but we gave it our best shot. Our Finals run came to an end, but there’s always next year.

Can I add that I learnt something this day and that was that sportsmanship is still alive within our game of cricket and although there is some testing and challenging times for all of us on the field I think it’s very, very important to remember that we have to remain sportsman and I know you all know what that means.

If I’ve missed anything or anyone I apologise.

Again, I thank all of the following people for their contributions towards making this Martin Shield campaign possible, Marie and Gary Fulford, Barry Casey, all the players involved, all the teams of the association that contributed and the MPSECA board.

I also want to make a special mention to the Doncaster Hotel for their continuing support and sponsorship of our cricket association and our representative teams.

Treasurer’s Report

The Association for season 2011-2012 has recorded a small overall loss on the previous year.

However one needs to remind members that this report includes expenses that were carried forward from the previous year, hence the deficit. Overall the Association is financially sound and achieved its goal of appropriate cost absorption whilst minimising increases in fees etc. and providing services to the members of the Association.

For season 2012-2013 the Association appears to be in a sound position however there will be a representative season that will include your Association hosting a side from Bathurst that will require substantial funding. Whilst there is subsidies for representative cricket along with sponsorships the incoming Board will need to be very diligent in their expenditure to ensure season 2012-2013 achieves a minimum break even financial result.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all Club Treasurers/ Secretaries for their support to me in my role as Treasurer, a position I have now held for two seasons and unfortunately am not in a position to carry on in season 2012-2013. I would ask all to consider and put forward suitable candidates for this vital role at our AGM.

I commend this financial report for adoption by the members.

Paul BrienActing Treasurer
