In many ways, 2019 was a banner year for our organization. We reached and exceeded goals that have resulted in our ability to serve as many kids as possible in the best ways possible. Throughout the pages of this report, you’ll see the incredible impact and results your support made possible for children who are most vulnerable. You’ll learn about the innovative programs our staff have developed to help kids individually and you’ll understand the importance we place on being good stewards of the resources the community has entrusted to us.

We are grateful for your partnership in transforming the lives of youth. There is still more to do. The needs are still great and now is not a time to slowdown the pace of the positive impact we have on kids. Childhood does not stand still waiting for opportunity, childhood is perishable and we must provide enriching experiences in a safe environment right now – every day.

At Boys & Girls Clubs we know there is no simple answer to success. It takes an army of people, a safe environment, high-quality programs and unique experiences to ensure kids have a great future. Since 1952, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston has relentlessly provided young people with the guidance to be innovative, brave and confident. We are boys & girls & tech & tutoring & fitness & STEM & arts & music & fun and so much more. At Boys & Girls Clubs we never take a single approach when it comes to kids. We do whatever it takes to build great futures.

Thank you for your partnership in helping build great futures for youth!

With thanks,

Bill Goetz Kevin R. HatteryBoard Chair President & CEO

Santa Fe Programming

Summer Programming

In response to the tragic shooting event in Santa Fe, Texas in 2018, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston collaborated with the City of Santa Fe Resiliency Center and other community partners to provide a safe place for local kids to go during the summer. While at the Club, kids and teens enjoyed activities and experiences that included a focus on Social and Emotional Learning to help them connect and cope with other teens recovering from the tragedy. Because the need for out-of-school time programming was vital, Boys & Girls Clubs provided this five-week program at no cost.

Our PartnersHolocaust Museum of Houston AstroCamp w/ NASAFun at Bat Summer Brain Gain

The Need Summer Learning Loss is the loss of academic skills by students over the summer, particularly by students from low- income communities. In these communities, children and teens lose an average of 2.6 months of grade equivalency in math achievement and a 2-month loss in reading achievement.

24 high-quality summer learning programs implemented (including Santa Fe satellite location)

Over 20 strategically aligned partners

Over 100 field trips and experiential learning activities

Goal StatementClubs will not only prevent summer learning loss, but will provide enrichment experiences each summer.

-- CAMERON, AGE 16

“...Wow ...I used to want to be an astronaut when I was a kid, and

I had forgot - Astro Camp, coming to NASA, just has me really thinking about things,

like my eyes were opened...”

Our Impact

What We Do Youth participated in fun, educational programming during the summer. Programming was designed to collaboratively engage youth in project based learning with an added emphasis on literacy and STEM. Summer learning experiences increased youth academic and social emotional skills.

5th graders increased their monthly rate of learning from .67 to 1.30 – almost 2x rate of learning increase while using the program!

Increased ability to identify emotional triggers and apply coping strategies to self regulate.

Members where physically active for 60 minutes or more on days they attended Club.

Teens learned safe driving skills and practiced on a driving simulator – 100 % course graduation rate.

Great Futures Dinner

2019 Dinner HighlightsOn September 19th, Tropical Storm Imelda forced the cancellation of the annual Great Futures Dinner, and prevented Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston from being able to not only honor the Houston Rockets, but also showcase the many talents of our club members. While we were disappointed that we were not able to hold the event, we are grateful to all of our individual and corporate partners who supported the event. Thanks to a generous donation from our Board Member and champion, Sean Wheeler, we were able to reach our $1,000,000 goal. The success of the Great Futures Dinner would also not have been possible without the support of our strong leaders. For the second year in a row, Melinda and Jeremy Thigpen chaired the Great Futures Dinner.

While we were not able to come together in September, the Houston Rockets hosted us at a game in November in their Sky Box suite. During the game, we were able to thank our sponsors, as well as recognize the Houston Rockets for their work with our Clubs and their investment in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston mission. Tad Brown, CEO of the Houston Rockets, accepted the award during

the game on behalf of the Houston Rockets organization, and some of our youth were able to be on court for the National Anthem. Thank you to Tilman Fertitta, Tad Brown, Sarah Joseph, and everyone at the Houston Rockets for being a champion for our youth!

Funding from the Great Futures Dinner directly benefits the nearly 26,000 youth we serve at our 23 Club locations, and allows us to offer essential programming after school and during the summer, distribute healthy meals daily, develop relationships with at-risk youth and keep membership affordable for all families at just $5 per school year.

BGCGH Board Chair-Elect, Julius Young and President & CEO, Kevin Hattery present Houston Rockets CEO, Tad Brown

with an appreciation award in recognition of the partnership with the Houston Rockets.

Boys & Girls Club members enjoy a special night on the court with the Houston Rockets for the pre-game activities..

Champions of Service

In 2019, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston relied on many community-minded corporations to provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences for our Club members. They partnered with us to provide tutoring, mentors, job shadowing, and many more fun and creative experiences for the nearly 26,000 youth we serve.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR PARTNERS who volunteered their time at one of our 23 Club locations and provided these incredible learning opportunities to our kids and teens. While the list below only includes our Champions of Service, we are thankful for all of the companies and individuals who took time out of their day to support BGCGH through volunteer service. Thank you for doing whatever it takes to create great futures!

Champions of Caring

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston depends on generous individual gifts, foundation grants, and corporate contributions and government support each year to help us reach nearly 26,000 Houston-area youth. Although membership during the school-year is only $5.00, it takes much more to provide a safe place where kids can learn about academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and citizenship, and workforce readiness.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR DONORS whose investments ensure our youth are provided dedicated facilities, trained youth-development professionals and results-oriented programming! While this listing only includes our Champions of Caring (donors who gave $100,000 or more) because of space limitations, we are grateful for each

and every one of our donors for their generous support.

What is the 1952 Legacy Society?

The 1952 Legacy Society is a giving society that was created to recognize planned gifts to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. The Legacy Society will provide donors the opportunity to make a lasting gift to the Clubs through their estate. These gifts ensure that the future needs of youth and teens in the Greater Houston area are met and might be included in a will, a charitable gift annuity, a trust or an insurance policy.

Why Should I Become a Member?

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston provides a safe, affordable place for kids and teens during critical out-of-school time in 23 Clubs across the Greater Houston area. While we have seen tremendous growth and success, there is still more work to be done as we continue to increase the number of youth we serve. We have a bold plan to close the opportunity gap by scaling our life-changing impact, preparing our kids and teens to be the problem solvers, innovators and leaders who shape our world. Your support through a planned gift ensures that future generations will have the opportunity to live successful and productive lives in a safe, positive and caring environment.
