MUFY STUDENTS SWEEP CLEAN MONASH ARTS SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST

Open to pre-university students, the Monash Arts Scholarship contest invited students to put together their knowledge, creativity, formulation of cogent arguments and communication skills to win themselves a 50% scholarship at Monash University Malaysia and cash prizes worth RM6,000. Involving three rounds of competition in The Pic and Snap, Malaysian Film Pitch and Trivia Bowl within a 6-hour time frame, this contest attracted a total of 33 students from various colleges.

With teamwork and individual effort required in the various stages of the competition, Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) students Fung Su En, Chen Kai Yuan and Nicole Chek Shao Min swept all the prizes at 2017’s Monash Arts Scholarship contest. The Pic and Snap in Round 1 required teams to create a montage from 6 different frames detailing their Monash experience using Instagram. Given a prop, a genre and a dialogue to be included, participating teams for Round 2 Malaysian Film Pitch had to develop and pitch the next big film in less than 5 minutes.

Winner of both Round 1 and Round 2, MUFY student Fung Su En used her love for Instagram and her experience in taking photos to discuss with her team mates their direction and focus in the competition. For the Malaysian Film Pitch, Su En’s team chose to address racial stereotypes by putting together a story of how 1 Chinese, 1 Malay and 1 Indian worked together to retrieve their money from a mysterious con-man.

Su En felt the third round was the most challenging as Round 3 Trivia Bowl had the students working individually to address question on Global Studies, Communications, Writings, Psychology, Gender Studies, Screen Studies and Journalism which are majors and minors in the Bachelor of Arts programme. Relying on her MUFY globalisation teacher, Ms Uma Devi K Sabanayagam for the additional general knowledge and encouragement, Su En came in fourth in the Trivia Bowl. Crowned the first prize winner of the Monash Arts Scholarship contest, Su En took home a cash prize of RM3,000 and a 50% scholarship to the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University Malaysia.

Second prize winner Chen Kai Yuan took home the cash prize of RM2,000 and a 50% scholarship to the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. Third prize winner, Nicole Chek Shao Min took home the cash prize of RM1,000 and a 50% scholarship to the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. Discovering teamwork to be challenging and interesting, Nicole learnt to keep an open mind, recognised the need for effective communications and the importance of cooperation amongst team mates.

TUAN YUAN FUN WELCOMES YEAR OF THE DOGThe tastes, sounds and traditions of Chinese New Year came alive in the Year of the Dog on the Sunway campus one bright afternoon in 2018. Organised by Sunway University’s Chinese Independent School Alumni Club (CISA), “Tuan Yuan Fun” brought together students from all walks of life to experience the annual Chinese New Year celebrations.

With almost 500 members in CISA, this eight-year old club with humble beginnings in 2010 aims to provide a platform for Chinese Independent School students to promote Chinese culture. Vice-President of CISA and one of the four event leaders for “Tuan Yuan Fun”, Amanda Chan Siew Yi shared the hope the festive celebration will help the public gain a better understanding of Chinese culture and traditions.

A lion dance performance by CISA followed by a dragon dance performance from Chung Hwa High School Klang students kicked off the “Tuan Yuan Fun”. To bring home the important message of family members gathering for the reunion, a play was enacted to showcase the story of three siblings who moved away from home after an argument with their mother. Incorporating 24 Festive Drums and a Chinese Orchestra into the storyline, all the characters came home to celebrate the Chinese New Year with loved ones.

Other performances for this day-long celebration also included Diabolo, a magic show, a dance showcase by Witz and a performance by ASTRO All Stars Geraldine Gan and William Tan. Chinese culture and traditions were very much in evidence this day as the five game and eight exhibition booths demonstrated the origins of family names, paper cutting, calligraphy and knots.

Commending the various CISA committees and helpers for their unwavering commitment in making the Year of the Dog festive celebration bigger and better, Club advisor Eileen Kor Pei Ling is looking forward to more CISA activities that give back to society and establish stronger alumni bonds.

MORE THAN NUMBERS

In her speech, valedictorian Tasia Khoo Pei Sze spoke of being more than numbers, the percentages written on the corner of rubric papers, the price of lunches and the cost of a CIMP education. Made of the good times spent together, the late nights filled with laughter and secrets, Tasia asked her peers to cherish the CIMP moments experienced.

Citing her father as her inspiration, Jasmine shared her father taught her the importance of giving back to society and she plans to volunteer in Borneo or India before continuing her degree in university.

This graduating cohort successfully raised funds for various NGOs. One fundraising project had 85 Business Leadership students raising a total of RM19,000 in 2 days for the Rumah Hope Children’s House, and another project by People to People International (PTPI) helped raised over RM1,300 for Manna House. Senior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group and Sunway University Dr Elizabeth Lee commended the cohort’s achievements and contributions in her speech.

TO BE A BLESSING

Citing these as life skills for the present and the future, Jared believes Sunway has been and still is a wonderful avenue for him to grow. With the FIA lecturers passionate about their teachings and going the extra mile to impart life values to the students, Jared advises future FIA students to be consistent with their studies and assignments, practice wise time management and to have a resilient and curious attitude - ask the lecturers what could be done to improve; to do better. Jared’s motivation to experience more in the future has prepared him to exercise self-initiative in his BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance degree in Sunway University.

Excited about stepping out from his FIA comfort zone, Jared is looking forward to the learning experiences and the challenges ahead. Making a difference to the community around him, graduating university, travelling the world, being out there in the real world are some of the items on Jared’s ‘look forward list’. With his tuition fees at Sunway University covered by his scholarship, Jared is happy with where he is now and is enjoying the challenge of university life.

Aspiring to be a blessing to the people around him, 19-year old Jared Chong Tze Meng from the Foundation In Arts (FIA) believes the programme structure of FIA has helped to prepare him for his BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance degree in Sunway University, especially in time management.

Having served as the president of the Sunway Foundation Programme during his time in FIA and a regular attendee at Sunway’s Christian Fellowship Club, Jared chose FIA based on his parents’ recommendations and his own discovery that FIA gave him a clear pathway into the accounting programme in Sunway University. Having received the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance scholarship after SPM, the opportunity to live away from home presented an exciting new phase of life for Jared that he very much wanted to venture into.

Life in FIA was full of colour as there were many different, unique individuals with whom he interacted socially with in Sunway College. His time serving as President of the Sunway Foundation Programme challenged Jared to better his time management. Managing his studies, his responsibilities and his social life beyond FIA helped him to sharpen his leadership skills and build teams when it came to organising a camp for Sunway’s Christian Fellowship.

COMMUNITY GAINS THROUGH AUSMAZING RACE AND I-CARE DAY

The annual AUSMAZING Race is a hit with Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) students as the AUSMAT Student Council and lecturers work together to create an obstacle race on the Sunway campus that presents challenges and obstacles for the participants. Working in teams, the participants need to figure out the clues and complete all the challenges on the pre-determined routes. Three years into the AUSMAZING Race, the most recent race had 28 teams with the participants being bombarded by puzzles, singing of songs and engaging in physically strenuous activities.

An activity incorporated into the AUSMAT I-Care Day which raises funds for the less fortunate, the AUSMAZING Race last year proved to be a wonderful stress buster for the students who were in the midst of prepping for their examinations. Funds raised from the AUSMAZING Race were channelled to Pertubuhan Tindakan Wanita Islam (PERTIWI) Soup Kitchen. Providing humanitarian food-aid services to the homeless and hard-core poor irrespective of race or religion, the collection of RM700 was presented to Datuk Munirah Abdul Hamid, vice president and head of PERTIWI Soup Kitchen.

To commemorate the 30-year presence of AUSMAT in Sunway College, the annual I-Care Day included a 5-kilometre run around Sunway City. The run and bazaar helped raise a total of RM9,000 for Yayasan Generasi Gemilang, a foundation which aims to improve the lives of under-served children and families through quality education. Riana Yam, Partnerships Lead and Vick Liew, Programme Lead of Yayasan Generasi Gemilang were presented with the mock cheque of RM9,000.

Planned and executed by the students themselves, Vanitha Satchithanadan, Director of AUSMAT commented that I-Care Day is a good platform for instilling a positive team culture and in helping the students to hone their communication skills, time management and make fast decisive actions during events like these. An opportunity for AUSMAT students to explore the various business models and marketing techniques learned in the classroom, I-Care Day aims to heighten social awareness amongst the students and provide them with a platform to give back to the community and society.

BALANCING STUDY AND LIFE

A-Level but her favourite lecturer is Ms Leong Lai Wan who teaches Chemistry and gave a lot of helpful advice. To create a balance between her academics and life in A-Level, Brina got involved in ALSTAR (A-Level Student Ambassador) and the Sunway Christian Fellowship. Reminding future A-Level students to never give up on their dreams, to set goals and be willing to work hard to achieve them, Brina has just recently completed one semester at the National University of Singapore.

Having achieved Top in the World for Physics and Top in Malaysia for Chemistry with 4A* in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for her A-Level, Brina moved south to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Brina hopes to learn how engineers apply scientific theories and fundamental principles to design products and structures, as she is passionate about mechanical engineering.

Discovering university life to be fun yet stressful, Brina has embraced a study life balance in NUS which includes being on the committee of Student Life Fair 2018 and Project Novus (Overseas Community Involvement Programme). Her greatest take-away from her days in Sunway College for Brina has been, “You reap what you sow so put your heart into everything you do.”

Her research into pre-university programmes at education fairs informed 20-year old Brina Shong Wey-Thynn about the wide recognition of the A-Level programme. Finding this programme to be a ticket to many prestigious universities across the world, this KPM (Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia) scholar opted for Sunway College. When a high school classmate strongly recommended the programme, she was doubly reassured she had made the right choice as she was unsure of her likes after graduating high school. Opting for the amazing Sunway College campus with highly-qualified lecturers, Brina formerly of Convent Bukit Nanas in Kuala Lumpur likes the many open areas that are available on campus as she feels they are conducive to studying.

Initially, college life proved to be a bit of a struggle for Brina in spite of the vibrant and friendly study environment. Some bits of the course syllabus were quite difficult to understand and some concepts hard to grasp but thanks to the caring, helpful teachers and friends she had, Brina learnt to persevere during the tough and challenging times in A-Level.

Learning became fun as Brina’s lecturers were all very experienced and dedicated teachers who made sure the students fully understood the course materials. Physics was her favourite subject in

THE IMPOSSIBLE BECOMES POSSIBLE

In her address to the graduating cohort of 2017 comprising 638 students, Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) valedictorian Lidia Kamilia spoke of the wholesome package of learning experiences within the programme and how they all learnt to push beyond their personal boundaries. With MUFY, the impossible became possible.

Currently in its eighteenth year of delivery at Sunway College, MUFY has welcomed students from over 30 countries including USA, Japan, Solomon Islands and Indonesia. A truly international programme, MUFY in Sunway College has over 1,200 students enrolled and to date, over 12,000 students have chosen MUFY as their academic bridge to a prestigious university education.

Proving itself as the most established MUFY provider in Australia, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the MUFY programme at Sunway College Kuala Lumpur has successfully engaged effectively with today’s learners. In congratulating the graduating cohort of 2017, Lee Thye Cheong, Director of MUFY first spoke of the academic achievements attained by the graduating cohort with the dedicated help of the MUFY teaching staff. Proud of the academic achievements of the 281 students who achieved an overall High Distinction score; their year of hard work, commitment and perseverance has made them eligible for Monash University (Malaysia or Australia) scholarships.

GIVING 100% TO EVERYTHING

17-year old Swarna Laxmi Selvaraja, a Maple Leaf award winner for Community Service advises future Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) students to always give 100% to everything you do in class as each teacher will know how much effort you have put in and reward you accordingly. Headed off to pursue Chemical Engineering in Australia, Swarna intends to help people and the environment one day as she believes a sustainable environment for the future lies in her finding work with a renewable energies company.

A previous recipient of the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship after her international GCSEs, Swarna came straight to Sunway College from Doha in Qatar where she had lived with her parents for the first 16 years of her life. Opting for CIMP with its 70% coursework and 30% exams, Swarna and her parents were impressed by the highly qualified international teachers. The unique environment and the large Sunway College campus were opportunities that Swarna embraced in her one-year in CIMP.

Keeping her CIMP schedule full of extracurricular activities, Swarna served as the CIMP Student Council treasurer in the first semester and as President in her second semester. A volunteer with the Sunway Student Volunteers, she participated in the Canada Education Fair and as a team member in the 24-Hour Race against Human Trafficking and Slavery. The team placed 24th out of the 110 participating teams in the event.

Calling CIMP an adventure of a lifetime in one year, Swarna found it challenging to maintain consistency in her grades and extra-curricular activities as her motivation and determination levels did fluctuate. However, Swarna persevered with the help of friends who pushed and supported her to try new things. Learning to be more independent, to think on her own and to rely less on her teachers’ guidance, Swarna began to rely on her own initiatives to complete her given tasks.

On top of her weekly Grade 7 violin lessons, Swarna still managed to contribute 176 hours to community service during CIMP. Giving back to the community and helping others in need enabled her to meet people from different faculties and programmes in Sunway and make new connections with fellow volunteers whilst contributing hours. Surprised to receive the Maple Leaf Award, Swarna is delighted the CIMP faculty saw her contributions as representative of the awards criteria and her winning the award remains one of the highlights of her time in CIMP.

LIFE CHANGING

handling daily administrative tasks as a Talent Admin Division Advisor and as a Learning and Development Intern under the Human Resource department. He remembers fondly the following highlights of his time in Sunway College. Staying late in college with friends to study and work on assignments coupled with a full library near exam time and empty in December along with the garlic chicken rice outside campus are some of the activities William participated in; as VU is his family and not just a place for learning.

Given the opportunity to participate in The Peking University – Sunway University Inaugural Student Exchange Programme after completing his VU Business Programme, William had two weeks to explore his options. The two-week long exchange programme to Peking University had him staying on campus at the Shao Yuan Student Dormitory. A life changing experience for William, his two weeks at Peking University were spent networking, expanding his knowledge on business opportunities in China, cycling around campus plus delving into the history of the Beijing 798 Art District and the Great Wall of China.

Enrolling into the 2-week advanced programme at the graduate level, William took 2 subjects and did 2 presentations. China and Asia-Pacific Regional Development gave him the opportunity to broaden his knowledge and views on China’s role in the South-East Asia Regional Development. A report on the chosen topic then contributed to William’s final grade for the subject.

Studying different kinds and aims of investors and angel investors, Entrepreneurial Finance had William reading a case study every day in order to participate in the class discussion. The best part were the visits to the China’s ‘Silicon Valley’ in Beijing and visits to Sinovation Ventures, Inno Way and Pay Egis where the students had the opportunity to meet and talk directly with the Chairman and founder of these companies.

The Victoria University (VU) Business Programme was more than just a place for acquiring knowledge as 22-year old Indonesian William Chang discovered when he chose to major in Financial Risk Management in Sunway College. Subjects within the programme like the Integrated Business Challenge, International Business Challenge and Applied Business Challenge helped William boost his self-confidence and communication skills.

Asides from the textbook learning, William was Vice-President for the Sunway Tennis Club. William also chose to gain more experience through his involvement in the Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter (SCSC) where he took on the role of Publication Director 2 and thereafter Vice-President.

In his role as Publication Director, he was placed in charge of the SCSC social media sites on Facebook, YouTube, BlogSpot and created the Club’s promotional video with the help of another member. As Vice-President of SCSC, his weekly meetings with the President Yen Lee and Vice-President Li Wen were to ensure no one felt left out as members’ welfare is a tradition of the SCSC.

Presently interning at an Indonesia-based property development company, PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk, William’s work includes

A proud member of the Rotaract Club of the Sunway University and recently installed as the Public Relations Director of the Club, Raphael is also part of Book Lovers United and member of the Sunway Catholic Society and Sunway Christian Fellowship. Meeting a lot of different new people and enjoying their stories, Raphael used his extra-curricular activities to get away from the hectic life of an FIA Student.

In each of the clubs Raphael participated in, he learnt much. Rotaract Club taught him the benefits of giving back to the community and Book Lovers United fueled his drive for knowledge. In Sunway Catholic Society and Christian Fellowship, he built his faith and asked for strength for the hardships faced.

Drawing from his personal experiences in FIA, Raphael discovered FIA is a programme which requires you to network and bond with the rest of your course mates. He would like to encourage future FIA students to stay humble, work well with others, and not put others down.

Well on his way to attain his BA (Hons) in Communication on a full Star Education Fund scholarship, Raphael looks forward to the challenges of university life. Believing this is an investment that has been paid in kind, Raphael thinks Communication is the perfect mixture of what he likes to do, and what he is good at doing.

18-year old Siah Ren Jun @ Raphael John C. Siah from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Sunway chose Foundation in Arts as his pre-university course as it leads directly to his goal of attaining a degree in Communication.

On a partial Jeffrey Cheah continuing scholarship which he had won as a prize in the iQuiz Competition, Raphael aspires to be a Public Relations Director or a journalist, working for Manchester City Football Club or even World Wrestling Entertainment. With dreams to be an MTV Host, radio DJ or an emcee one day, Raphael spent his one-year in FIA learning about trust. For Raphael, trust makes this world go round and is the fundamental basis on which every relationship is built on.

Helping to shape his maturity and mindset, FIA has given him a welcoming environment with the type of people who are able to enjoy their life and at the same time, set their priorities right for the projects and assignments in the programme. For him, the lecturers are the best bits about FIA. They brought joy and laughter to each and every lesson, to the point where he occasionally looked forward to waking up to college the next day.

FANTASTIC

E-WASTE DISPOSAL DRIVE FOR A CLEANER, GREENER ENVIRONMENTKicking off in January 2018, the E-Waste Disposal Campaign had a big e-Waste collection bin placed on the Sunway campus. For this e-Waste collection day, a collection truck and workers were on standby at the collection booth to collect a dizzying variety of electronic items that were no longer wanted, needed or in use. This included office e-Waste items from Information Technology Services (IT Services) and Facilities departments, items collected from the big and small e-Waste bins on campus, and other home e-Waste items brought in by staff and students.

Hoping to educate students and staff to be responsible citizens who do their bit for the benefit of the environment and future generations, Sunway Education Group e-Waste collection bins are placed in strategic locations around campus all year long.

The 2012 United Nations report has projected that global e-Waste will increase a further 33% from 49.7 million to 65.4 million tons per annum and is one of the fastest growing source of waste worldwide. Toxic materials like lead, mercury, cadmium, brominated (BFR), beryllium, PVC and arsenic are often found in the garbage which leads to both human health and the environment being placed at risk of exposure.

Collecting unwanted electronic devices, electrical home appliances, mobile phones, batteries, chargers, and electronic components, the E-Waste Disposal Campaign was initiated in 2012. According to Tony Lee, Director of IT Services, Sunway Education Group, this twice-yearly event has collected more than 22,000 kg of e-Waste.

Supported by Student LIFE, this joint effort by IT Services, Facilities, Safety and Health departments, together with the Sunway College Student Council (SCC) ensures the proper disposal of the collected e-Waste through Meriahtek, a certified vendor of Department of Environment (DOE).

Continuing on the quest for a cleaner and greener environment, the second e-Waste disposal collection day for 2018 is taking place in August. Let us all help build a more sustainable future for our e-Waste by properly disposing our electronic and electrical waste through e-Waste collection day.

Proper e-Waste disposal for a cleaner and greener environment
