Days 1 - 3

Migrating to Hyper-V from VMware

Pre-engagement Questionnaire

Inventory customer environment and assess migration benefits and readiness using the MAP Toolkit:

Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit

Install, configure and setup collection jobs. Allow jobs to run at least two full days to collect data on the environment. Run and analyse reports to determine capacity and readiness of target environment.

Note: the assessment of the customer’s environment can be done without the MAP tool if the partner has prior knowledge of the environment and an assessment report is included in the submitted Completion Template

5

Days 4 - 5

Migrating to Hyper-V from VMware

Create a step-by-step migration plan by analysing the assessment results and classifying complexity and difficulty of the source virtual machines.

If you are conducting a 5-day engagement, run a moderate production pilot by converting a sample of VMware virtual hard disk files to Hyper-V virtual hard disk files using the Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Demonstrate the benefits of the new environment and validate the migration plan.

If you are converting more that one VM, consider using the MVMC Automation Toolkit (MAT).

If you are conducting a 10-day engagement, proceed to the next slide.

Completion Report including Assessment Report, Prioritized Migration Plan, & Pilot Report

6

Days 6 - 10

Migrating to Hyper-V from VMware

Run a complex production pilot by converting several of VMware virtual hard disk files to Hyper-V virtual hard disk files using System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM). Demonstrate the benefits of the new environment validate the migration plan.

If you do not have access to VMM, consider using the MVMC Automation Toolkit (MAT) to accelerate the VM conversation with Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC)

The MVMC Automation Toolkit (MAT) is a collection of PowerShell scripts that will automate conversions using MVMC and it is back ended by a SQL instance. You can use it to convert several machines at once, on a single server – or scale it out and execute conversions on many servers at the same time.

MAT is composed of 3 phases: Collection List Management Conversion

Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) is a management solution for the virtualized datacenter, enabling you to configure and manage your virtualization host, networking, and storage resources in order to create and deploy virtual machines and services to private clouds that you have created

New enhancements in Virtual Machine Manager that may affect the infrastructure choices and design include the ability to:

Install a highly available VMM management server Create Run As accounts to provide the necessary

credentials for performing operations in VMM Use the VMM console to configure networking

resources (for example, logical networks, IP address pools, and load balancers) to be used to deploy virtual machines and services

Create a custom capability profile to limit the resources that are used by virtual machines that are created in a private cloud

Enable self-service users to use the VMM console instead of the VMM Self-Service Portal to perform tasks such as deploying virtual machines and services
