Artist’s Presentation

Jef Aerosol:

Born in Nantes in 1957, Jef Aérosol is a stencil artist, one of the pioneers of what everyone has today agreed to call "street art" or "urban art" (although he prefers the term "contextual art"). He affixed his mark for the first time in 1982 in the city of Tours: rock-pop-punk imagery highlighted by his signature, a mysterious red arrow. Since then, the spray dandy has left its mark on the walls of multiple cities around the world : stealth stencils or large murals.

His black and white characters, illustrious or anonymous, often life-size painted, testify for the artist's attachment to deep humanist values.

Jef's work is also visible in many events and exhibitions both in France and abroad.

Hiro Ando

Japanese multidisciplinary artist born in 1973, he's known for his sculptures inspired by traditional Japanese culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different forms such as the Samurai or the sumo wrestler. The artist reworks these themes with a very modern touch. The bright and smooth materials, the bright colors, the brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando's sculptures take us into the world of manga in which the artist's generation grew up. Hiro Ando's art is the meeting

Banksy

Banksy is a famous street artist, whose private life is unknown, he never revealed his face. His name is a pseudonym, and all that surrounds his identity is only suppositions.

His first creations appeared in Bristol, where he first worked as a graffiti artist. Banksy brings through his paintings an anti-system message, pushing his audience to think.

He used for example the famous image of the little Vietnamese kid burned with napalm, adding around her Mickey and Donald holding his hand.

Banksy has also collaborated with others artists : he made the cover of the group Blur for the album "Think Tank", worked on the highly anticipated The Sons of Man by Alfonso Cuarón, In 2010, he directed a documentary called Faites le mur!, broadcasted at the Sundance Film Festival, in which a merchant obsessed with Banksy became an urban artist.

Remy Bond

Remy was born in 1983 in Paris, France. As a child, Remy dreamed of becoming an astronaut: he fantasized about soaring through the black vacuum of space, travelling to distant stars, bounding across the lunar soil, and contemplating the beauty of planet Earth in complete stillness. Today Remy’s dream-life has grown into a massive body of creative Artworks, which can be seen at his arts invites us into the hallucinatory universe animated by Paintings and sculptures of a rare beauty, which strike us with their essential and pure esthetic quality. The goal is to transport us to a place where time is simply suspended and conventional modes of perception are disrupted. Remy’s lunar work makes use of Pop Art codes while questioning the seemingly universal idioms of advertising and pop culture. Commonplace images and objects of our consumerist society are reconfigured in the search for a poetic meaning. Remy appropriates and radically transforms these symbols, propelling us into a dimension of experience beyond that of our everyday routines, Remy’s artworks shuttles us into a new lunar universe. At the project’s core is a series of gigantic portraits of pop culture icons, celebrities, appear dressed in NASA space suits, surrounded by cosmic landscapes, whether imaginary or monochromatic. Through these lysergic displacements of imagery, Remy pays discreet homage to these giants of the public imagination, while at the same time questioning their status and influence in our society. By inviting us into a sort of surreal Embassy of the imaginary lunar world on a trajectory envisioned by the poet Charles Baudelaire, «Beyond the sun, beyond the ethers, beyond the confines of the starry spheres. «Through his art and creativity, Remy encourages us to fulfill our own childhood dreams.

Mr. Brainwash

Very quickly his works acquired such recognition that Madonna invites him to create the cover of her Album "Best of Celebration" and then the covers of her singles, DVDs and vinyl’s.

Déborah Bruni

Always on the lookout for what makes the news, she never fails to create, enlight, reinvent history from a fantastic feminine point of view. She draws her inspiration from the world around her, from what sublimates it, and sometimes destroys it too. Cinema, music, politics ... are not the themes of her art, but the pretexts. Creativity has no space for it, between heaven and earth; it comes from everything, from everyone, from everywhere. she creates what is true because it is right. Her paintings are born of an inheritance left by his great heroes, with the POP ART surge, like James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselman or Andy Warhol.

Cali

Cali's favorite tool is ordinary, a simple ballpoint pen, but her works are extraordinary! "Bic art" is a real technique, a drawing technique that leaves no room for error. Creating the unusual with the ordinary, developing a complex technique from simple materials, this is the challenge of this great artist. The characters she immortalizes are, for the most part, absolute icons: Mick Jagger, John Lennon or Marilyn cross Mandela, Kennedy or Gandhi.

With humor and distance, she accuses, provokes and denounces. Her compositions mix sulfurous and glamor, rebellion and emotion. From the ball of her pen, Cali draws the contours of a sick world, victim of his excessive consumption.

Annick b. Cuadrado, a French artist, born and working in Paris, introduces in her works of art the most famous products of our consumer life. She has convinced the owners of the most famous brands and logos in the world of her original and creative approach to such brands. A difficult task knowing the legal means of such owners to protect their brands. Annick b. Cuadrado enjoys interpreting and diverting, with elegance, vigor and humor, the well-known candies, soft drinks, washing powders. The image and memory of these products and brands is an actual appeal to our taste buds : Coca-Cola, Hollywood chewing-gum, Tagada strawberries, Marshmallows…

Acrylic painting on canvas or plexiglas, paintings, collages or forms : Annick b. Cuadrado re-discovers our weaknesses in big formats. The multiplication and repetition of the various themes interpreted by the artist echo our child’s remembrances.

Robert Combas

« My paint rocks », said Robert Combas about his work. This artist was born in Sète (South of France) in 1957. His work has been approved as soon as he finished his studies at les Beaux Arts de Montpellier. Then, he has quickly become the leader of the artistic movement “Figuration Libre”, alongside the likes of Ben, Rémi Blanchard, François Boisrond and Hervé di Rosa.

Quoting from this artist, the Figuration Libre « is to do the more, what we want the more personally, the more freely.”

This freedom appears in the numerous themes of his art. Each piece has its own world. Each piece tells a story about the daily life…stupidity, violence, love, hate. These paintings are a mix of lines, of colours, of patterns, of faces, of bodies.

There is an historical theme in Combas ‘work: fights. For Combas, fights are a metaphor of life: every day you have to fight to live. The majority of the “fights” has been painted in the eighties but we can find others in different periods.

Moreover, there are a lot of women in Combas work. They, most of the time, are anonymous but can be called Ketty, Maïté, Sophie and particularly Genevieve, his wife.

Combas, also, likes interpreting and playing with people’s works such as paintings, photographies, essays, music. For instance, he reworks academic drawings and makes the characters wilder.

Combas is not limited to one kind of painting. His work is always changing.

Erró

Erró is an Icelandic artist born in 1932 in Ólafsvík, in the northwest of Iceland. Admitted to the Reykjavik School of Fine Arts in September 1949, he graduated in 1951 to become an art teacher. In 1952, he traveled to Norway where he studied printmaking, mural painting at the academy in Oslo. His first solo exhibition took place in 1955 in Florence à la ‘Galleria Santa Trinita’. In 1958, he settled in Paris where his work is revealed in the context of the Narrative Figuration movement During his travels around the world, Erró collects images (advertisements, photos, cartoons, posters, political documents) that are his source of inspiration. He selects, assembles, and accumulates them to his own pleasure and always with humor, sometimes with anguish and violence, to form on the canvas a result that can be as read as viewed. In some of his compositions, he cleverly inserts characters from paintings by Ingres, Delacroix, Léger and Picasso, who would find themselves living

Page 22: Contemporary Art invades Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris › ... › 2018 › 05 › CP-ART-ATTACK-ENG.pdf · 2019-01-17 · Art Photo Expo Agathe Alezra-Cohen alezracohen@gmail.com

together with movie stars, politicians or revolutionaries and bloodthirsty comic hero. He often works in series: Chinese cycles, political, erotic. “I need efficient equipment and, during my travels, I search everywhere in discount and book stores. I accumulate a huge amount of material, and when I meet a lot of images relating to the same theme, it’s a sign to start a series.” The process is then to select images, and “marry” them together to create collages and paintings. Numerous exhibitions are devoted to his work both in France and abroad. He would always condemn the aberrations of our modern society: consumer-focused, mercantile erotism, revolutions, human rights denied, Americanization of our way of life.

Invader born in 1969, also known as Space Invader, is an Urban artist originally based in Paris. He affixes mosaic images of characters from the 1970s video game “Space Invaders" in cities around the world. Once a work is completed, Invader records it as an "invasion" and creates accompanying maps and reference books to indicate the location of each piece. Invader began these urban, outdoor installations in Paris in 1998, and continued to "invade" 31 other cities in France, followed by an additional 22 cities across Europe. Currently, cities in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Australia are also home to examples of Invader's work.  The mosaics are made using weather-resistant tiles, which represent the pixels used for graphics in early video and computer games. The installation process typically takes at least one week, including scouting, recording, and mapping locations. One of the most conspicuous locations to feature works by Invader is the landmark Hollywood Sign in California; the first mosaic work was mounted on the "D," on December 31, 1999. In addition to mosaics, Invader creates similarly pixelated works using Rubik’s Cubes. Since 2000, Invader's works have been featured in galleries around the world, and he gained even greater popularity and renown after he was featured in the 2010 documentary film about Street Art, Exit Through the Gift Shop.

JonOne

John Andrew Perello born in Harlem, NY, aka JonOne, Jonone or Jon156, is an American artist, most famous for his Graffiti-influenced art.

JonOne is well-known for his abstract expressionist graffiti. The artist

self-taught develops his abstract colorful style composed of dynamic brushstrokes,

drops of paintings and patterns he creates on the buildings and infrastructure of the

city. In an innovative style that surpasses the laws dictated by graffiti (street art, urban

culture), his pieces approach his "freestyle" (freedom he advocates above all), his motto

which does not impose any limit on him. In his paintings, the space is entirely used, the empty space white does not exist. The color appears as the vital load of John, his palette is rich and lively, tonalities and contrasts reveal subtle nuances of play, where in a

harmonious composition that seems as spontaneous as it is measured, shapes are formed and untie, undulate or make themselves straight. There is symmetry and asymmetry, repetition and unification, the trait is mastered with precision and flexibility. Each of his paintings is a abstract improvisation, whose brilliance conveys a “joie de vivre”.

Kokian

Kokian ,born in Paris in 1971. After having spent his early childhood in Burma (2 years) and Morocco (4 years), Kokian and his family moved back to France and settled in the Paris region. The cultural shock was quite violent for Kokian due to the contrast between the Burmese and Moroccan cultures he had grown up with, and this new Western

Page 26: Contemporary Art invades Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris › ... › 2018 › 05 › CP-ART-ATTACK-ENG.pdf · 2019-01-17 · Art Photo Expo Agathe Alezra-Cohen alezracohen@gmail.com

European culture. Already as a child, Kokian was a solitary child, with the habit of expressing himself exclusively though painting. His artistic expression migrated to the streets, as he discovered tagging and graffiti in the streets of Paris. His first small pieces had as a focus the denunciation of contemporary injustices. His work and life in the streets of Paris for those few months was a crucial point in the life of Kokian - In his eyes, society forgot and rejected him, leading him to extreme solitude and the decadence that followed. In 1995, Kokian left Paris to find refuge in New York, where he will be reborn artistically. As he meets people and exchanges thoughts and opinions in the streets of New York, Kokian forges his identity and art, and learns to express the strong messages of his time. It is at this time that he starts to glue drawings with small messages in the streets, starting what would become a recognizable feature and trademark of his. Up until 1997, Kokian participated in numerous informal expositions around the world. Due to his provocative style, the medias started to pay more attention to him, dedicating more and more airtime to portraying him. In order to be financially independent of his painting- and to continue to paint without any financial pollution or corruption -. His works are now renown worldwide, and can be found in numerous collections

Jeff Koons

Jeff Koons is an American artist, born in Pennsylvania in 1955, atypical realizing works of art contemporary in a specific way. Initially, he leads a peaceful life, without extravagances or snags, exercising the trade of a stockbroker on the Wall Street Stock Exchange where he specialized in commodities. It was in 1980 that he presented his first exhibition, entitled "The New", presented in New Museum of Contemporary Art of New York. But his first major work will be exposed in 1986, it is his "Inflatable Rabbit", a giant sculpture of rabbit, made of stainless steel. Regular exhibitions of this atypical artist take place regularly. Jeff Koons is sculptor and engraver, but presents the paradox of not realizing his works directly. Its creative process is to bring together a large number of assistants, with skills in sculpture, engraving ... to make them apply his ideas. Jeff Koons is a great visionary, who likes to have his works realized starting from objects of everyday life: his "Balloons dogs" are the representation of these dogs made in balloons at fairs. He is an initiator of pop culture, put forward by Andy Warhol, inspiring and personifying everyday objects and situations. Her sulphurous life (he was married to the Cicciolina, an actress of pornographic films) has also contributed to his image and notoriety. Highly prized collectors, he acquired the most expensive artist status in the world in 2013; at an auction, his "Balloon dog "broke off at $ 58 million.

Jeff Koons has received numerous awards and honors in recognition of his cultural achievements.

Luke Newton

“Have you ever paid attention to the little things in daily life? They are wonderful if you spend some time to appreciate them… ” Luke Newton, the young British artist graduated from Saint Martin’s School, is sharing his views of contemporary society through his artworks inspired by the small things in daily life. Like a flash and without apparent correlation, his art works, encourage the imagination to zap fast from one image to another.

Transforming iPods into defensive weapons, hiding iconic images in QR codes and aligning symbolic red stickers on canvas, Luke Newton accumulates the most mundane things of

Page 29: Contemporary Art invades Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris › ... › 2018 › 05 › CP-ART-ATTACK-ENG.pdf · 2019-01-17 · Art Photo Expo Agathe Alezra-Cohen alezracohen@gmail.com

his daily life, and interprets it subversively. His artworks are a reflection of a society in which he believes everyone tries to renew and create within the confines of routine. The interpretation of Luke Newton is harsh and always with British humor. His artworks are able to stimulate the imagination of the public bringing them into a dimension of derision and gravity.

He has cooperated with many artists and in his own right Luke Newton is a multi-form artist transposing between sculpture, painting, drawing and collage. In his artwork the traditional disciplines are questioned, and rather than tools become the subject of communication for artist.

ODN

ODN is a French artist born in 1971 in Paris. He started graffiti in 1987 in Paris,

on the wasteland of Stalingrad, "cradle of Hip-Hop culture" where he practices, beyond

from a simple signature to a new style of lettering and graphic expression on walls

and trains. It restores the world of Graffiti, Tag and Street Art he wants

show creative strength and impact on your life. The universe of ODN is in charge of

artistic references which he claims the various influences he uses in his own way while

having fun to foil the codes. ODN has a clean style, made of clearly defined shapes

by a thick line and treated in solid colors and without shadows. His works

singularize by the saturation of the colored surfaces. He is at the origin of the movement

TAGARTISTIK "in which he claims the aesthetics of the tag. The work of ODN is a

concentrated energy, which we love to discover and dig. She surprises us and charm us,

both in substance and in form, with a rage to paint as a guideline.

Tempo Nok, its name comes from the shortcut of the term "temporality". Using a mark of

poorly covering paint and for domestic use, Tempo Nok plays diluted colors for

realize what was his first work in part transparent. Voluptuous in forms and

in the lines, the soap bubble and this transparency in general, have become over

of time the graphic signature, light and delicate, through which he tries to

transmit strong emotions. His favorite subject, the Memento Mori (remember

that you are going to die), is a pictorial genre that pays tribute to the life and not to the idolatry of the

death. The artist tries to capture the beauty of a moment so short it is on the scale of the universe.

To mark achievements in space and time, he integrates the surrounding landscape to

through plays of reflection.

Deborah Sportes

Coming from the generation of the seventies, a generation in complete revolution, Deborah Sportes, is a painter who has been offering us since 2001 the constantly renewed strength of her contemporary pictorial creations. Yet, her work could have remained forever hidden in the dungeon of her memory if a “good fairy”, a childhood friend, hadn’t found the decisive reasons to convince the extremely reserved and humble artist to share her art with us.She will have waited for ten years before daring showing her work. And about time too! She just couldn’t deprive us any longer of the opportunity to appreciate her many artistic qualities. Her beginning was a complete rush in the artistic world, exhibitions rapidly succeeded one another. Her extreme sensibility is the driving force behind her pictorial history. Life is the major source of inspiration that she depicts on the canvas in a delicate or passionate way. Her personal style is remarkable for the colors, the textures and writing which are blended, entwined, and spreading on her enchanted canvas. Her transition to black and white feeds an already extensive collection whose unconscious aim goes directly to the essence, refining for a while the various representations of her work. Especially receptive to contemporary art over classic art, this artist gently shares with us from the bottom of her heart her special vision of the world. Paris, New-York, Shanghai those are mythic places where, by definition the world of art crosses over the boundaries of conventional thinking, those are places where varied and lively work is appreciated. Always dynamic and active, aware of being so, Deborah Sportes communicates that energy in many paintings.

Bradley Theodore

In each generation, an artist emerges who has the potential to become iconic. New York lays claim to many of them – Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat. Now, Bradley Theodore has emerged as an artist with the potential to join this list of famous names.GQ Magazine describes his works as “chromatic thunderstorms – at once exhilarating, incontrovertibly powerful and ever so slightly chilling.”Theodore’s signature Dia de los Muertos style is instantly recognisable, and his energetic use of colour, bold paintbrush strokes and stripped-back skeletal figures has led his work to be compared to that of fellow New York street artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. In fact, Vogue’s International Editor Suzy Menkes refers to his work as “Banksy meets Basquiat.”Just like Basquiat, the value of Theodore’s art is steadily increasing, thanks to a growing number of high profile collectors and celebrity admirers.

Born in Turks & Caicos, an island group east of Cuba, Bradley Theodore now lives in New York City where he is an integrated part of the art scene. However, he is dedicated to making his art accessible for all to see around the world, producing murals on the streets of Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Oslo and Paris.Bradley Theodore is also enjoying commercial success, haven been chosen as the official artist for the 2016 US Open and virtual reality artist in residence for Google. As a result, many people are fascinated by his story. So much so in fact, “Becoming: Bradley Theodore,” a documentary on Theodore’s life and his journey to success in the art world, recently premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.

Robyn Ward

Robyn Ward is a contemporary Irish painter currently based between London and Los Angeles. A self-taught artist, he began his career as a teenager on the streets of Belfast in Northern Ireland, creating large-scale graffiti work on bridges and derelict buildings.

He now works in mixed media on canvas, combining acrylics, inks, watercolours, oils and spray paint. In his most recent series, iconic cartoon characters are hand-drawn onto backgrounds of graffiti, often painted over a coarsely textured surface. The initial impression of childhood nostalgia and innocence conveyed by the cartoon characters is subverted by their actions, nodding ironically to drug culture, politics, socio-economic issues and contemporary sexual mores.

Ward juxtaposes the cosy, domestic world of early youth with the gritty visuals of adolescent rebellion and a distinctly adult sensibility, to create work that is restlessly interrogative and darkly humorous.

Page 39: Contemporary Art invades Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris › ... › 2018 › 05 › CP-ART-ATTACK-ENG.pdf · 2019-01-17 · Art Photo Expo Agathe Alezra-Cohen alezracohen@gmail.com

Drawing diverse inspiration from Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock, pop artists like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, street artist Conor Harrington and the surreal imagination of Hieronymus Bosch, Ward’s multi-layered and multi-faceted paintings capture the lurid kaleidoscope of Western society in the 21st century.
