New York, Sep 11In season's final GrandSlam, the US Open, newly-crowned world number oneAngel ique Kerber ofGermany beat KarolinaPliskova of Czech Republicto lift the Women's Singlestitle. In the summit clashplayed this morning, Kerbertrumped Pliskova in a threeset match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 towin her maiden US Opentitle. This is Kerber's secondMajor title. She won theAustralian Open this year.

Angelique Kerber wins US Open title

Pliskova, the runner up, had earlier defeated the likes of Venus Williams in quarter-finals andSerena Williams in semi-finals.In the Men's Doubles final, Brit Jamie Murray and his Brazilian partner Bruno Soares defeated theunseeded Spanish pair of Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-2, 6-3 to win thetitle.

Mumbai, Sept 11 The below-par Test record ofRohit Sharma is expected to bethe focus of discussion whenthe selection committee, headedby Sandeep Patil, picks theIndian cricket squad for thehome Test series against NewZealand, here tomorrow.Despite Rohit's poor form in theTests, he has the confidence ofcaptain Virat Kohli, who feelsthat the ODI specialist shouldbe given a longer run to provehimself in the Test format. The star Mumbai batsman, whoholds the world record for thehighest score in ODIs, couldnever settle down in the longestformat during his delayed 18-Test career that began with abang -- with back-to-back tonsagainst the West Indies in 2013

Focus on Rohit Sharma as selectors meetto choose Test squad against New Zealand

in India.Considered to be a batsmanwith a wide range of strokes,Rohit has been in and out ofthe playing XI since then withconsistency not his forte inTests. In the recent series against theWest Indies in the Caribbean,he got a chance to play in twoout of four games, one of whichwas washed out, and hemustered 9 and 41 in the twoinnings in the third Test at GrosIslet. How much patience will theselectors continue to have onthe talented but under-performing 29-year-oldbatsman at the Test level is amatter of conjecture.Rohit also did not do well in thefirst innings of the ongoing

Duleep Trophy final in GreaterNoida after being specificallyincluded in one of the teams --India Blue -- following his returnfrom the West Indies and theUSA.He made just 30 runsyesterday before throwing hiswicket away. With quite a few talentedyoungsters like Shreyas Iyer,Manish Pandey and KarunNair waiting in the wings, theselectors will have a tough taskat hands. Another top-orderbatsman who has come underthe scanner is CheteshwarPujara. He was dropped for thefinal Test against the WestIndies, along with successfulopener in past Test rubbers --Murali Vijay --, by the tourmanagement.

Dubai, Sept 11Following knocks of anunbeaten 145 off 65 balls and66 in 29 balls in the two-matchTwenty20 International (T20I)series against Sri Lanka, GlennMaxwell, the Australian all-rounder, has moved up to thetop position in the InternationalCricket Council (ICC) T20Irankings for all-rounders,while also reaching a career-best third spot for batsmen.Maxwell rose to the top of theall-rounders chart after thefirst T20I against Sri Lanka, leapf rogging Pakis tan 'sShahid Afr idi andBangladesh 's Shakib AlHasan. He managed toconsolidate his No. 1 rankingfol lowing Austral ia's 2-0series w in on Friday(September 9).Maxwell, who gained 16 pointswith his spectacular

performance in the twomatches, took his tally to 763points, only eight shy of thesecond-placed Aaron Finch inthe list of top T20I batsmen.Virat Kohli, the India Testskipper, still tops the battingcharts with 820 points.Tillakaratne Dilshan, whoplayed his last internationalgame at Pallekele, ended hiscareer as the 19th-rankedbatsman, while finishing at the15th spot in the rankings for all-rounders.In the rankings for bowlers,Australia's left-arm all-rounderJames Faulkner, with a career-best rating of 672 points, reached the fifth position afterpicking up four wickets in theSri Lanka series, including athree-wicket haul in the secondT20I. Mitchell Starc, who alsobagged four scalps against SriLanka, re-entered the top-20.
