What is RFID?

RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology that allows automatic

identification of objects, animals or people.

RFID is not just a better bar code

Capabilities

More data, greater accuracy, automated delivery

Line of sight not required

Reads 1000’s of items simultaneously

Benefits

Improved accuracy, visibility, operational efficiency and security

Opportunities to quantify processes and map improvements

Opportunities for exception based management

RFID Components

Tag : It is a transponder that is made up of an integrated antenna and an electronic circuit. The information can be written and rewritten on a tag. The ID written on the tag is known as the EPC (Electronic Product Code).

Reader : An RFID reader is a device that is used to interrogate an RFID tag. The reader has an antenna that emits radio waves; the tag responds by sending back its data

Host Computer : It reads/writes data from/to the tags through the reader. It stores and evaluates obtained data and links the transceiver to applications.

- To provide daily in-out report of containers and Carriers location wise along with stay duration.- To have a visual / sound signal which informs the guards whether the number of entry assigned to a particular vehicle / container is over.- To have highly secured, tamper evident tags which cannot be copied.- To support recording all weighing measurements online without need of manual intervention in secure way.- To have system which will be cheat proof and assures the compliance to company policies.- To generate automated Container entry / exit receipts on paper without human intervention, for record purpose.- To support ERP in data collection, validation and for MIS purpose.- To have minimum hurdles in adaptation of the technology without creating any additional points of activities or unnecessary actions dependency from any one new to process.

System’s Requirement:

PlantCurrently 1 Yard under consideration namely Chennai.

RFID stickers issuance• RFID Stickers to be issued to all Carriers and Containers.• Tags will be pasted on every vehicle’s windscreen contains the information

Vehicle like Reg. number, Insurance No. etc.

Yard Activity recording and control• Verification of vehicle vs. Container on the basis of RFID Tag.• Automated validation & Yard entry process as per schedule of entry.• Data recording at various Weighting Bridge stations and recording of the

same in RFID Tags associated with the vehicle in accordance to theprocedure.

• Data storage at the database level and parallel marking on RFID Tag to keep itin independent mode or IT Setup for non interrupted functioning of system.

RFID Procedure

Tag Issuance

Supervisor at Sea Port will issue / re-assignee an tag of carrier against the

Container tags on Loading activity using HHT. Tag Number will be stored in the same truckentry.

RFID Readers at Yard EntryTo Read the Truck Presence with respective details andprint receipt for container entry

WeighbridgeEnsuring error -free weighing operationsWeight of the truck will be stored in database against RFID tag of carrier.

Cross ChecksAt Weighbridge level all trucks has to cross the predefined crossing of weightingand recording, where data has to be stored in the Database and UHF tag willalso contain the information related to the crossing of predefined process.

Issue of Container Tag

Tag ID will be read by HHT or Fixed Readers Attached to the Crain which are connected to Central Application server thru Wi-Fi or GPRS connectivity and the data would fed in the system online at real time.

Alternate of Fixed RFID reader will be RFID Hand Held Reader which has to be operated by Crain Operator orGround Staff.

Page 17: Container managment solution

Tagging of Container:

1. Each container will be tagged with a smart

Container Tag that contains a unique ID. The

container description will be entered into a

database along with its tracking number.

2. The tag can be assigned certain parameters

like Owner, Consigner, Consignee,

Destination location , permitted movement

etc.

3. Over the time the database can build up an

audit trail of the handling and workflow

history of each container.

Page 18: Container managment solution

Container Entry in to Yard:

1. Entry gate will be assigned with RFID Reader

where reader will be connected to GPRS unit

/ WiFi unit and communicate with Central

Application on GPRS connectivity or Wi-Fi

connectivity.

2. At the time of container and Carrier entry

RFID gate reader / HHT will read the

Container Tag ID and after initial validation

data will be passed on to the central

Application.

3. Application logic checks and print an entry

pass for all vehicle and containers.

UHF RFID Reader and Antenna is put on thegate. The software is deployed on a PC &HHT.

RFID tags are provided to the approved Vehicles & applied on windscreen of the carriers.

RFID Cards ensures the identification of the trucks at each entry / exit points and compliance of trip in accordance to policies.

At the time of successful trip closer, vehicle exit recorded within the system and RFID tags from container removed at exit point.

Generic View of The Yard

The Cargo Arrangement of a Container Yard forms a 3D

Construct of:

Layers - Counting the Container

Heights from the ground To

upwards.

Bays - Counting the Container

Lengths from the ground

to the End of Yard.

Rows - Counting the Container

Widths from Centre Line

of Yard.

* Bays / Rows coordinates will be captured using GPS at start or S/W logic
