Understanding What We Say and Do at Mass
(excerpts from “A Biblical Walk Through the
Mass” by Edward Sri
When Father says these words at Mass, “The Lord
Be With You,” this is no ordinary greeting, it is not a
‘hey, how are you?’ These words convey “the reality
of Jesus’ presence with the community of believers.”
Jesus said that “when two or more are gathered in
my name, there am I in their midst.”
It also expresses the profound reality of God’s life
dwelling within our souls by virtue of our Bap-
tism. With these words, the priest is praying that
the divine life we received may continue to grow
in us.
The greeting also recalls the words spoken to a
roster of heroes from the bible who were called by
God to a daunting mission - that stretched those
individuals beyond their “comfort zone.” Think of
Isaac and Jacob, Joshua, King David, Jeremiah,
the Blessed Virgin Mary and Moses. The Lord
tells Moses at the burning bush to go back to
Egypt and confront Pharaoh. God tells Moses, “I
will be with you.” Do you ever feel like Moses -
inadequate for the mission God has entrusted you
to, whether it be in your marriage, your family, in
your work?
“The Lord Be With You” reminds us of the high
calling we each have. As God’s children, we each
have a particular mission to fulfill the Father’s
plan. These words also assure us that we have ac-
cess to a higher power that can support us through
the trials and challenges of life and help us be
faithful in whatever God has entrusted to us.
We respond “and with your Spirit.”
By saying “and with your Spirit,” the people are
acknowledging the Holy Spirit’s unique activity
through the priest during the sacred liturgy by vir-
tue of his ordination.
St. Josemaria Escriva emphasized why such
prayers for priests are important especially in the
context of the Mass; “I ask Christians to pray ear-
nestly for us priests that we learn to perform the
holy sacrifice in a holy way. I ask you to show a
deep love for the Holy Mass. In this way you will
encourage us priests to celebrate it respectfully
with divine and human dignity; to keep clean the
vestments and other things used for worship, to act
devoutly, and to avoid rushing.”

“And, so here I am talking with you - I want you to find the poor here, right in your own home first. AND BEGIN LOVE THERE. Be that good news to your own people. And find out about your next-door neighbor - do you know who they are?” - Saint Mother Teresa, 1979 Nobel Lecture
