In today’s Gospel, Jesus said to his disci-
ples: “I have come to set the earth on fire,
and how I wish it were already blazing!
There is a baptism with which I must be
baptized, and how great is my anguish until
it be accomplished.” Your gift to the Society
to assist those suffering in poverty will help
set the earth on fire with God’s love.

EASY!
To all my sons and daughters in
Christ,
Another week has passed which
brings us even closer to the start of
worship in the new Saint Cecilia on
August 28.
Our parish has been blessed with extraordinary
workers and craftsmen, great weather and no
safety issues since the start of construction. For
this, we are very thankful!
A few questions have arose regarding the Dedica-
tion Mass. Below you will find the answers:
Doors to the church will open at 1:30 p.m.,
with Mass beginning promptly at 2:30 p.m.;
Seating is a first come, first serve basis;
Absolutely no saving of seats will be
allowed;
There is handicapped/wheelchair accessibil-
ity;
Absolutely no food or drink is allowed in
the church;
This Mass will count as your Sunday obli-
gation.
It is of utmost importance that attendees adhere to
these guidelines.
Please continue to pray for those who are volun-
teering their time to make this event unforgetta-
ble.
I love you all like Jesus!
Fr. Eric

Dear Saint Cecilia’s -
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my
Church for awarding me the Saint Cecilia Scholarship.
It is an honor to represent my Church. This scholar-
ship will help reduce any financial situations and al-
low me to focus on athletics and academics. I will be
attending McKendree University majoring in Criminal
Justice with the hope of joining the Federal Bureau of
Investigation in the future.
Thank you again for investing in my future. I will
make sure to do my best in achieving success in my
education and career goals. I look forward to be able
to give back to my community in the future.
Thank you.

CONFESSION BEFORE COMMUNION
by Paul Turner
“Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,” we
say. Then we go to communion anyway. How-
ever, some Catholics stay in the pew. Others
slink out of church when the communion pro-
cession forms. Some feel genuinely unworthy
to receive their Lord. In the not-too-distant
past, people went to confession before every
communion, and many received communion
only rarely. People will abstain from the
Eucharist if they judge their sins grave. Is con-
fession required before communion? No. In
fact, the only sins which should keep us from
communion and which we are obliged to con-
fess are called “serious.” Which one are those?
We don’t exactly have a list. It’s a judgment
call with the penitent and the confessor, so
you’ll hear many interpretations of serious sin
from priests and people alike. In previous cen-
turies, serious sin governed so many cases that
few people received communion regularly, but
that is not the case today. How do we interpret
the expression? Although confession is not re-
quired before every communion, it often pre-
cedes in church practice. Children preparing
for First Communion also prepare for First
Penance. Although the church does not oblige
us to confess lesser sins, those who use the sac-
rament will find their communion more fruit-
ful.
