The Horwich Parish (consists of the whole of Horwich and part of Lostock) is divided into six wards: Vale,
Bridge, Lever park, Church, Claypool and Brazley with 14 elected representatives serving an electorate of
over 15,000.
Horwich will remember them The Town Mayor of Horwich, Councillor Steve Rock along with the Royal British Legion
and Members of the Town Council invites members from local groups and organisations
along with members of the public to join them for the Annual Parade and Service on
Sunday 12th November. The Parade assembles on Ramsbottom Road outside the RMI Club
at 11.30 am for departure at 11.40 am, taking a route along Ramsbottom Road, Victoria
Road, Church Street and Lee Lane. It then moves on to the Garden of Remembrance on
Lever Park Avenue for the Service of Remembrance at 12.15pm, returning via the direct
route along Chorley New Road for dismissal. The Parade will be covered by temporary
road closures and marshalled. The Town Mayor will lay a wreath at the Loco Works War
Memorial at 11.00am. At the request of the Royal British Legion, the Parade will not stop
at the Public Hall on Lee Lane as their representative will lay a wreath in the Council
Chamber following the two-minute silence at 11.00am on Armistice Day, Saturday 11th
November. Poppy wreaths may be ordered by contacting Mrs Barbara Ronson – 01204
695742.
The Town Mayor of Horwich, Councillor Steve Rock would like to extend an invitation to the residents of Horwich to join them and local Mayoralty for the Lighting of the Civic Christmas Tree & Lighting Displays at 6pm on Friday 1 December 2017 at the roundabout opposite the Crown Hotel, Horwich. This event traditionally marks the start of the festive season in Horwich and will as usual be followed by a short carol service accompanied by a local school band and choir. Father Christmas and the Rotary Club sleigh will be making an appearance again this year. Members of Horwich Carnival Royalty will also be there. So why not come along and bring the children so that they can join the Mayor in the big countdown to the lighting of the tree! Please note that the usual temporary traffic diversion will be in place at the Crown roundabout for the safety of those attending.
Festive light switch-on in Horwich Town
A proud Yorkshireman and lifelong Huddersfield Town supporter but with a strong affinity to Lancashire, I have lived in Horwich for the past 27 years, married to a local girl for over 40 years. My two children attended Rivington & Blackrod High School. After considering representing my local community, I was elected to Horwich Town Council in May 2017 representing Church Ward. I have had many years’ experience in various roles for Horwich
RMI Harriers and in the past as a trade union branch organiser. Although approaching retirement age I still work as an IT Apprentice Assessor, Standards Verifier and Maths tutor. I continue to represent Horwich RMI Harriers when possible but also participate in events organised by the Long Distance Walkers Association. In 2010 I did a solo walk of over 600 miles in the Pyrenees raising almost £2,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind and the British Heart Foundation. My main dislikes are people who abuse their power, intolerance, self-importance and excessive vanity. In my spare time I also enjoy cricket, rugby and table tennis. I have been passionate about music all my life especially soul music. In addition to sports programmes on TV, I enjoy watching Inspector Montalbano and quizzes such as 9 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and I appeared on Mastermind in 2013.
By sponsoring one of these large poppies for just £5 each, you will help 'bring to life' the route of the Annual Remembrance Day Procession through Horwich in the run up to Armistice Day (You can sponsor as many Lamp Post Poppies as you like). Once we have covered the route, we hope to extend the display along the main routes into Horwich.

The new signs are part of the Horwich Town Council’s initiative to raise Horwich’s profile
and recognise the importance of the Loco Works in the development of the town.
The new design features a representation of the iconic 1008
locomotive built at the Loco Works in 1889. The design also highlights the prominent local landmark Rivington
Pike and a greeting that reads ‘Welcome to Horwich – Historic Railway Town’. The
signs are at the following locations: Chorley Old Road opposite the Blundell Arms, Chorley
New Road opposite the Golf Club, Crown Lane past the motorway bridge, Mansell Way, Scholes Bank and a new sign on Lever Park Avenue just before Rivington and Blackrod High School. The Leader of Horwich Council, Councillor Joyce Kellett said, “Members of the Town Council’s Civic Awards and Civic Signs Sub-Committee have worked extremely hard on finalising the design of the boundary sign and hope that the new signs give a warm welcome to everybody coming into Horwich and that Horwich residents are justifiably proud of their town’ s unique heritage.”
The Town Council awards grant funding three times a year to local voluntary and community organisations located in and serving the residents of Horwich. Grants are usually in the region of £100 to £300 but larger awards are sometimes considered. Closing date is 30 September for consideration in October. Application forms are available from Horwich Community (formerly Resource) Centre & Horwich Library or by contacting the Town Clerk (details on the front of the newsletter). They can also be downloaded from the Council website www.horwich.gov.uk (Town Council/Your Council page).
Here at the Community Centre we have rooms to suit all your needs. From one-off bookings for a meeting room, the hall for a birthday party or for a class on a weekly basis, we have it all. Interested? Call 01204 668157
