Child sexual exploitation happens when a child has been persuaded that

sexual activity is a ‘normal’ part of adult life.

Adolescence is a time of experimentation and can be a particularly chal-lenging period for parents and their children. Most parents understand

the value of young people learning about themselves through new ex-

periences, but also want to protect their child from harm.

There could be cause for concern if your child is exhibiting three or

more of the following warning signs:

He or she becomes especially secretive and stops engaging with their

usual friends. They may be particularly prone to sharp mood swings; many parents come to Pace reporting that their child seems to have acquired an entirely different personality. Whilst mood

swings are common to all adolescents, it is the severity of behaviour

change that is most indicative.

They may be associating with, or develop a sexual relationship with older men and/or women (although bear in mind that the perpetra-tors could approach the child through a peer from school who is

already being exploited, or through the youngest member of the

grooming network).

They may be in possession of new, expensive items which they couldn’t

normally afford, such as mobile phones, iPods or jewellery

They may go missing from home – and be defensive

about their location and activities, often returning home late or staying out all night (again, perpetrators know that parents will immediately suspect some-

thing is wrong if their child stays out all night, so they may initially drop the child off at the home ad-

dress and before their curfew. They may even pick

them up outside the school gates).

They may receive odd calls and messages on their mo-

biles or social media pages from unknown, possibly much older associates from outside their normal so-

cial network

Your child may also:

Exhibit a sudden change in dressing patterns or musi-

cal taste

Look tired and/or unwell, and sleep at unusual hours

Have marks or scars on their body which they try to

conceal

Adopt new ‘street language’ or respond to a new

street name

CSE perpetrators are both skilled and strategic; they aim

to drive a wedge between you and your child, closing down the normal channels of communication and emo-

tional bond between you.

What Apps Is Your Teenager using?… Gone are the days of Facebook as a one-stop shop for all social-networking needs. While it may seem more complicated to post photos on Instagram, share casual moments on Snapchat, text on WhatsApp, and check your Twitter feed throughout

the day, teens love the variety. You don't need to know the ins and outs of all the apps, sites, and terms that are "hot" right now (and frankly, if you did, they wouldn't be trendy anymore). But knowing the basics -- what they are, can make the difference between a positive

and a negative experience for your child. Below, we've laid out some of the most popular types of apps and websites for teens: texting, micro-blogging, self-destructing/secret, and chatting/meeting/dating. The more you know about each, the better you'll be able to communicate

with your teen about safe choices. Please remember that technology is changing all the time and what might be “in” this week could be replaced by some-thing completely different next. We hope that from this newsletter it will open up conversation on apps with your child

and keep it open for them to let you know what is “hot” right now.

Sexting ….The Law ! The way that we use our mobile phones evolves every day and at Thomas Clarkson Academy we believe it is paramount to keep every student safe and make them aware of the dangers of Sexting. Many professionals consider Sexting to be “sending or posting sexually suggestive images, including nude or semi-nude pho-tographs via mobiles or over the internet. Young people however when asked what sexting means to them, they responded with ‘writing and sharing explicit messages with people they know’. Here are some facts: In 2016 the NSPCC found that 1 in 10 boys and 1 in 4 girls had taken a topless photograph of themselves and 3% had taken fully naked pictures. Of those boys and girls who had taken explicit photos of themselves, 55% of them had shared that photo with someone and 31% had shared that photo with someone they did NOT know. The law states that making, possessing and distributing any indecent imagery (photos or videos) of someone under 18 years old is Illegal.

This includes images of your-self if you are under the age of 18.
