Dear Friends,

Summer is here and we hope that you are able to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us – with beautiful trees and flowers in bloom; pleasant, long days; Edmonton Food Trucks and Festivals to enjoy. This is our Edmonton and this is our community.

This newsletter will provide you with some highlights of our work, update you on our services, and share information on upcoming events and other ways to support Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Sadly, hunger remains a real issue facing too many in our community. 2016 proved to be the most challenging year that I have ever experienced at the Food Bank. Although challenging, and at times pushing us closer to our limits, our friends and partners rose to the challenge to assist us in our mission and our services.

Unfortunately, with Edmonton’s economic climate slow to recover, our client numbers continue to rise and have even surpassed 2016’s records. While these are not the records we like to break, we remain hopeful thanks to the continued outpouring of support from the community.

Timing is everything when you live paycheque to paycheque. Harvey knows this all too well. Facing the end of the month and still waiting for his assistance cheque, which was mailed to the wrong address, Harvey found himself having to decide between making his cell phone payment; purchasing a July bus pass, so he can get to his part-time job; or buying groceries.

In 2013, Harvey experienced a cardiac incident that left him medically unfit to work. This health challenge upended his life causing a downward spiral of job, food, and housing security issues. Thanks to our donors and volunteers, Harvey had a safe and respectful place to turn to access food in his time of need – Edmonton’s Food Bank.

In Addition, thanks to one of our partner agencies, Homeward Trust, Harvey now has a place to call home. Hopefully, now with a roof over his head, food in his fridge, and a lost cheque finally cashed, Harvey can tackle an underlying fear – to undergo cardiac surgery to get the necessary clearance to work full time.

Ted Flower – Canadian Pride Edmonton’s Food Bank is honoured to be the recipient of Canadian Pride. This amazing piece by talented artist Ted Flower took five-and-a-half years to complete (3,712 hours), using 115 ballpoint pens. Canadian Pride has been proudly hanging in the International Arrivals area at the Edmonton International Airport since its

unveiling on May 3, 2017. This display is thanks to the generous support of the Edmonton International Airport, Purolator, ATB, and the Edmonton Eskimos who have covered all costs associated with the display, including mounting and rent monies.

On July 20, 2017, Canadian Pride will arrive at the Calgary International Airport where it will be on display for about two-and-a-half months before ending its tour sometime in September at the Ottawa International Airport. Rent monies for the piece will support food banks in Calgary and Ottawa, respectively. The original piece, along with reprints, is available for purchase with proceeds going to support the work of Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Ted Flower’s Canadian Pride will become a lasting legacy for its role in celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday.

Some of what is planted in our garden include staples such as tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, carrots, and potatoes; in addition to peppers, three varieties of onions, garlic, leeks, leafy greens, and specialty herbs. The following agencies have been maintaining some of the garden beds for their programs and collective kitchens: Bissell Centre’s Hope Terrace, Edmonton Native Healing Centre, Thrive Family Church Outreach, and Winnifred Stewart.
