Performing Arts Soirée
Students took to the stage this week in the first ever Wilmslow High School Performing Arts Soirée – an event that celebrated the talent, hard work and dedication of students within the performing arts. A request was made for any budding singers, dancers, actors and musicians who wanted to share their talent with an audience and showcase just some of the performance work taking place in school. The response was staggering and led to over 100 performers taking to the stage on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th February.

Year 9 Religious Studies Curriculum: The HolocaustAs part of the extended study on the Holocaust, Year 9 students will be exploring scenes from the film 'Schindler's List' in lessons, after half term. The film was given a 15 age rating certification, in 1993; you can find out more by following the link:http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/schindlers-list-1993
The film is a powerful representation of Holocaust suffering and heroism and shows many themes explored in lessons, which are often challenging to watch. If you have concerns over your child's participation in these lessons, you should contact Mr Mayhew [email protected]

Year 10 Parents and Students
Please return any outstanding Work Experience self placement forms to Mrs Stephens as soon as possible.
The task of matching students to placements is progressing well but there are still forms missing.
I think you will agree that is less stressful for students to know where they are being placed as soon as possible.
A further reminder that £10 is required from everyone, regardless of whether it is a self placement
or one found by school.
If household income makes this difficult, please contact Mrs Stephens either in writing, by phone or by email ([email protected])

NEWS
Sensory GardenAfter a number of months of student consultation and planning, work on the school’s new Sensory Garden will begin over the half term break.
The project is the result of a bid to Tesco’s Bags for Help scheme which has provided money for the area to be turned into a purposeful outdoor learning space. Head Boy, Joe McBride, and Sodexo school grounds employee Andy Henry (both pictured) have played an active part in the project, including supporting the writing of the bid, working on the designs and liaising with the contractors. Joe said, “To finally see all of the many months of planning being put into action is very exciting. I feel very proud to have been part of this project and hope that the new space will be a great addition to the many students who will benefit”.
Hallé Orchestra VisitOn Monday 5th February our Year 10 and 11 music GCSE classes went to see the Hallé Orchestra perform at the Bridgewater Hall. The programme included performances of set works for GCSE and A level courses, including a live analysis of Haydn's Clock Symphony which really helped the students to understand how different elements of the music work together. The programme tracked the development of the orchestra through the musical periods, and finished with an exciting performance of 'Star Wars' by John Williams.
It was a very informative and enjoyable afternoon which we will hope to attend again next year.

AthleticsThe athletics season is now underway with teams from Year 7 and 8 travelling to Poynton to compete in the county indoor athletics competition. Both Year 7 teams came 2nd with the girls narrowly missing out on first place by one point whilst both of the Year 8 teams came 5th overall.
A great introduction to athletics with all students having a brilliant time and Miss Jamison's ears still ringing from all the noise!

HockeyThe netball girls were in action on Wednesday, with the seniors posting a convincing win against Newcastle Under Lyme whilst the juniors entertained Falliroome at home. The senior girls played some great netball, eventually winning 34-17.
The junior results were equally as impressive and demonstrate just how strong the netball is here at Wilmslow. Results: U12B won 9-0 U13B won 14-10 U13C won 12-1
FootballOn Wednesday the U14 boys played the next round of their Cheshire Cup campaign at home to Cardinal Newman. After a slow start the boys found their rhythm, scoring six goals in a fairly one sided affair. Dan Rodrigues scored a brace and gave a man of the match performance in a convincing win. Result: Wilmslow High 6 – 1 Cardinal NewmanGoal scorers: Dan Rodrigues (2), Maxwell Roberts, Henry James, Jimmy Burling, Lewis Royle.
This win is even more impressive, considering that the boys also played on Tuesday night in a friendly fixture against touring side FC Meggen from Switzerland (photo right). The games were played on astro turf as the pitches were waterlogged which led to some great football being played. Around 28 boys took the field in all in two highly competitive matches. Results:U14A - Drew 1-1 - Goal scorer: Jimmy Burling. Man of the Match: Lewis Bostock.U14B - Drew 2-2 - Goal scorers: George Halfpenny, Jake Hawtin. Man of the Match: James Morten. Unfortunately, the U15 boys didn't have as much luck in their own Cheshire Cup quarter-final where they came up against a strong St Peter and Paul Catholic school. A Lilyan Samba goal had given our boys hope of clinching the win in normal time, but a serious injury to a player meant the game had to be abandoned five minutes early and go straight to penalties.
Unfortunately, the boys came agonisingly close but lost out 5-4 due to one missed penalty. James Davidson put in a great performance on his way to man of the match.
