Hire Specialist or Expert for Sports Turf Care and Maintenance
A well maintained sports turf is the basic requirement for excellent sporting events. Even
sportspersons of very high caliber cannot showcase their skills in a badly maintained turf
whether it is football, golf, athletics or any other sport. The job of sports turf care and
maintenance is a specialized one.
Sports turf care and maintenance
Weed grass
Weed grass is one of the commonest factors afflicting golf courses as well as other sports turfs.
These weeds inhibit favorable playing conditions, especially in golf, and also pose drainage
problems. Once drainage is restricted and water starts accumulating, these weeds get favorable
conditions and start multiplying. Once these get entrenched it becomes difficult to remove them
completely without harming the turf grass. So you need to continuously monitor the turf for any
sign of these weeds.
Excessive use
Excessive use of sports turf is also harmful for the turf grasses. The grass wears and renders
playing conditions below par. The grass needs to be given optimum time to recuperate from
abuse that takes place during a sporting event. If adequate time is not given the grass will not be
able to come out of the stress and bring down the quality of the turf. Thus, the grass needs to be
monitored for signs of wear and remedial steps taken. Moreover, only superior quality and high
wear tolerant grass should be used.
White grubs and their predators
Grasses suffer from insect infestation and the most dominant insect in turf grasses are the white
grubs as well as their predators. These insects feed upon the root of turf grasses and render them
lifeless. In spring when the soil starts turning warm, these insects get a boost to their biological
activities and start multiplying. Lured by these insects their predators also crowd on the turf and
render playing conditions very much unfavorable. On infestation the turf grass turns bluish and
ultimately dies. You need to monitor the turf continuously, especially during this time of the
year, to see that there is no white grub infestation.
Brown patch
Too much of moisture for too long can result in growth of brown patch virus on the turf grass.
Once the fungus gets favorable conditions such as 100% humidity and warm environment they
start growing at a fast rate. The grass leaves develop brown patches and leads to inferior playing
conditions. These need to be killed with suitable chemicals as soon as they are detected. Sports
turf care and maintenance professionals continuously look for brown spots on the turf grasses.
Summer patch
Here, the turf develops circular brown spots owing to the activity of a class of fungus which form
colonies on the roots of grasses.
Heat or draught stress
Owing to increasing heat during summer and global warming, this problem has assumed acute
proportions. Owing to heat stress the roots of grasses become so weak that they become
susceptible to wear and stress and ultimate die. Sports turf care and maintenance professionals
are very much worried about this problem.
To keep sports turf in prime condition you need to monitor them regularly and take remedial
steps. For such a specialized and full time job you need specialists, and there are many of them.
