A) General rules

Foreign citizens travelling to Brazil as researchers, visiting professors and members of cultural or

scientific missions must have a ‘Cultural Visa’. Depending on the type of research (field research,

for example), or cultural activity, an approval from Brazil may be required, which can take

approximately three weeks.

. Applicants must have lived in the UK for at least one year prior to this visa application.

. Applicants must lodge their application in person.

· Nationals of Argentina, Austria, Chile, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, the

Netherlands, Paraguay, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and

the United Kingdom are exempted from this type of visa, provided that their stay in Brazil does not

exceed 90 days and that they do not receive any payment in the country.

· Prior Approval: An approval from the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations is required, prior to

the issuing of a visa, to nationals of the following countries:

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Central African republic, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea,

Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Malawi,

Mali, Mauritania, Nepal, Nigeria, North Korea, Palau, Palestine (Authority), Pakistan, Senegal,

Somalia, Syria, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Yemen, . Holders of Travel

Documents/Certificate of Identity (as opposed to an ordinary passport) issued by any country,

including the UK, also require prior approval. The reply from Brazil takes approximately two weeks

(the passport does not have to be kept at the Consulate for this period).

· Nationals of Kosovo and Taiwan: Visas are to be issued on a Brazilian “Laissez-Passer”.

On a reciprocity basis, first entry into Brazil must be no later than 90 days after the visa

has been issued for passport holders of the following countries:

Angola, Bahrain, Cambodia, Cape Verde, China, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Greece,

Honduras, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Laos, Libya, Myanmar, Nigeria,

Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay, Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, Sao Tome and Principe, Saudi Arabia, South

Korea, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, and Tunisia.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure the application is lodged accordingly.

Within 30 days of arrival in Brazil, bearers of these types of visas must register with the Brazilian

Immigration authorities (DPMAF) and submit a copy of the visa application form, provided to them

by this Consulate upon collection of the visa. The form will be stapled to a page of the passport to

avoid it being misplaced.

An Embarkation/Disembarkation card, provided to all foreign nationals entering the country by the

Brazilian Immigration authorities (DPMAF), must be filled in and signed appropriately and submitted

to immigration upon arrival.
