From the PresidentBauma, Brexit and Business

A s President, I represent the CEA on the Steering Group of the Committee

for European Construction Equipment (CECE), our eyes and ears in Brussels. The Group met at this year’s BAUMA show in Munich and I was amongst the near 600,000 visitors to this most international of industry events. It was good to witness the BAUMA organisers and CECE sign an agreement to devise a common programme on the promotion of skills in our sector – something which very much aligns with our own ambitions for our Skills Initiative. The latest step forward in this is our involvement in seeking an approved Trailblazer standard for construction plant service engineers.

Industry colleagues at BAUMA were keen to hear how the UK market is faring and what is going to happen with the “Brexit vote”. My perception is that the UK is holding up better than a lot of international markets but it is hoped that BAUMA will have given business confidence on the Continent a valuable shot in the arm. To remove some of the guess work about market and related trends, and as part of our Vision 2020 strategy, our new CEA market analyst, Paul Lyons, will be launching our “market information portal” on the CEA web site later this year. Our first Brexit poll of member companies showed positive support for Europe

at over 60 percent but with plenty of no comments and undecideds.

Back home in the UK, our outreach to the wider construction industry is gaining pace with our Construction Productivity Forum programme. Our first Forum breakfast with John Pelton MBE (“Mr Innovation” for Crossrail) was outstanding in the insights provided – and the big follow up is our CPF conference on 8th June at the HQ of Inmarsat in London (see www.cpf16.co.uk). We have landed the top speaker in Lord Adonis, the chair of the National Infrastructure Commission, with a host of other experts focusing on the productivity and innovation agenda. Valued support from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) shows we are on the right track. The conference is also supported by PLANTWORX – which is already over 50 percent sold out more than a year ahead. This is a great vote of confidence by our industry.

On the same day, and directly before the conference starts, is our 2016 CEA AGM. Especially important this year as the Management Council will be proposing an updated structure for the Association to reflect its growth in membership, diversity and activities. So I would urge everyone to get Wednesday 8th June in their diaries – and I look forward to seeing you there. ■

MOBA UK and Highway Data Systems (HDS) have formed a joint venture to provide road builders with a unique service that combines MOBA’s sensing technology and HDS/MATest’s materials testing that, together, will ensure that highways are built to the very highest standards.

The partnership between MOBA and HDS marks the start of an on-going R&D programme that will deliver robust systems that will give greater oversight of the paving process. The considerable benefits to road builders means that comprehensive data can be automatically

gathered during paving operations which can then be incorporated into PMS and BIM systems. UKAS accredited reports can also be generated. The net result is that the client has a greater insight into the construction process whilst also significantly reducing the need for on-site quality control personnel.

MOBA’s hardware is used to capture data from a range of sensors on the paving machine which is then sent to a cloud server for integration with the client’s plant data by HDS to produce comprehensive reports in geospatial and spreadsheet formats. Compaction data is also captured from rollers using M2M technology to give a complete overview of the paving process from start to finish.

Through the process of automation, fewer on-site quality control staff will be required, providing the client with additional cost-saving opportunities. HDS then delivers post-paving quality control testing using its vehicle mounted systems which are able to measure surface regularity and macro texture at traffic speed, further reducing the need for site staff.

Kubota UK Scoops Global Service AccoladeA Kubota UK employee has scooped the top award at the global Kubota Skills Contest in Japan, an event that tests the technical expertise of its staff worldwide.

The two-day event was held at Kubota’s global headquarters in Japan and was attended by Kubota Service Engineers from America, Canada, Australia, France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the UK. The assessment criteria for the contest consisted of a 30-minute written assessment as well as a 90-minute practical challenge, with competitors tasked with diagnosing and fixing five faults on a Kubota M110GX-II tractor.

Steve Mead (pictured), Product Support Engineer for Kubota UK with over 20 years’ experience, was crowned the overall winner with the judges citing the methodology and processes used to remedy the faults set him apart from the other competitors.

Steve commented: “The global Kubota

Skills Contest brings together some of Kubota’s best service engineers, so to be judge as the overall best performer across both the written and practical assessments is something I’m very proud of,” Mead says. “The opportunity to travel to Japan has been a valuable experience. The approach and the

process to finding faults is very important and being able to gain insight into how others from the global Kubota community carry out their maintenance and service practices is something I will carry forward into the training I provide to dealers.”

Such was the success of the event that Kubota will be launching the National Dealer Skills Competition in 2016, a UK-specific event that will widen the entry to include service engineers working at dealerships across Kubota’s UK network.

“The Kubota Skills competition has long been an annual fixture in Japan and to be crowned the overall winner is a big achievement,” comments Kubota managing director Dave Roberts. “We are delighted that Steve has represented Kubota UK so well in this competition and this award win is a testament to his hard work and the meticulous nature he applies to his role as product support engineer.”

Hyundai Bullish Hyundai Heavy Industries Europe has reported that 2015 was the most successful year ever for the manufacturer. Sales numbers and turn-over reached an all-time high with more than 5,000 units sold and 8 percent growth in turnover for construction equipment and forklifts. Despite the unstable economic situation and the unfavourable exchange rate for the Euro, European Hyundai dealers managed an excellent performance in key markets including the UK and France.

Hyundai’s market share of mini excavators grew in Scandinavia, UK, Eastern Europe and France. The company made it a priority to increase its market share in the mini excavator market. Furthermore, the sales of battery trucks (forklifts) in the UK, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands have doubled. Another priority for Hyundai was to increase Parts sales and 2015 showed an increase of 9 percent in this area. Hyundai’s strategy of having more than 70,000 line items in stock, creating 96 percent availability, clearly has paid off.

Another major step forwards was the decision to begin the construction of a brand

new European headquarters. On 81,000 square metres of land, a new HQ office, a new warehouse, a training facility, an event hall and a showroom are now under construction.

In the short term the economic growth around the world is not expected to improve significantly. And even if growth returns, some markets are a long way from their previous levels. The HHI Group sets the full-year sales target for 2016 at $ 22,000 million.

For Hyundai Heavy Industries Europe, the year has already started favourably. Thanks to construction works - which began early this

year in Germany due to a mild winter – sales are already 50 percent up compared to the same period in the previous year. And there is even more room for growth with the German dealers “HBN” and “Wienäber” opening new outlets and “Engelhard” building new premises.

In 2016 Hyundai Heavy Industries Europe will once again focus on the mini excavator market, the heavy diesel forklift market and parts sales. In order to gain success in these focus areas, HHIE will further expand the dealer network, widen the product range and focus more on key customers.

Member NewsGoing DutchEngcon is continuing to expand in Europe, and as part of this the company is establishing its first office in the Netherlands. This is a strategically important milestone and is taking place during the first quarter of 2016.

Engcon, a leading manufacturer of tilt rotators, is increasing its presence in the Dutch market by starting up its own sales company. The company, engcon NL, will initially employ a sales manager, a salesperson and another person focusing on servicing and aftersales.

“The Netherlands is an extremely interesting market for us. This launch will be an important milestone for Engcon and will be the object of considerable focus in future,” says Krister Blomgren, CEO of parent company engcon Holding.

Blomgren explains that during the peak year of 2007, around 4,500 excavators were sold in the Netherlands, compared to around 2,200 excavators sold in Sweden in the same year. As a consequence of the financial crisis

in 2008, slightly fewer excavators are sold today, although Engcon believes that this will change.

“We are convinced that the Dutch market is slowly but surely approaching the levels

we saw around 2007. Quite simply we see considerable potential in the Netherlands, but this is also an important investment for increasing Engcon’s overall presence on the European market.

Engcon is continuing to expand in Europe with new operation in the Netherlands.

Hill Engineering Bags Management Award

Newry-based Hill Engineering has been named as one of Ireland’s ‘Best Managed’ companies in the Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards Programme. The company, which demonstrated superior business performance for the second year running, was recognised at an awards gala dinner in Dublin in March.

The Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards Programme, in association with Barclays Bank Ireland, recognises indigenous Irish companies across Ireland which are operating at the highest levels of business performance. The network of 115 Best Managed Companies now employs over 47,000 people around the country and has a combined turnover of almost €10bn. Recognising the importance of overseas markets for Irish companies, the Best Managed Companies also recorded an average growth in export sales of 161 percent over the last three years.

Established in 1994, Multi-Award winning Hill Engineering is celebrating 22-years of designing and manufacturing pioneering excavator attachments. The company’s quick couplers are designed for excavators ranging from 3 to 120 tonnes.

“This award is further evidence of the advancements this company has made over the past six-years. We have grown our quick coupler market share to over 50% in the UK and we are well on our way to becoming market leader in North America. This is testimony to the contemporary management practices we have adopted as a business. The whole company has been instrumental in listening to our customers’ needs and requirements,” says Hill Engineering managing director Ian Hill. “We have undertaken research programmes to identify how we can offer our customers a competitive advantage over other suppliers. In turn this has enabled the business to tailor our innovative products to customer’s requirements and improve their productivity in the field by reducing downtime. 2015 was a very busy year for Hill Engineering – winning this award in 2016 has set new benchmark for the rest of the year.”

Sixteen companies from around Ireland were awarded Best Managed status for the first time this year, following a lengthy qualification and judging process in which the complete performance of a business is assessed, moving beyond finances to such areas as operational excellence, strategy, and human resource processes.

Tomorrow, the WorldLeicester-based Nylacast, an award-winning leader in engineering polymers, is to increase its global expansion programme and open a new production facility in China following a £12 million funding deal from Santander Corporate & Commercial.

Due to strong customer demand from automotive clients in China, a decision was made to set up a new factory in China to service local and regional customers. The funding from Santander will enable the business to open a new site in Changshu, which will go live in early 2016. This factory has already enabled Nylacast to secure new contracts and, with the Chinese passenger car market forecast to grow at 7 percent per annum and by 2020 will have a global market share of 25 percent, Nylacast will be well positioned to benefit from strong growth in the Chinese market. The factory will also enable the firm to expand into other sectors such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, construction and mining in the key Chinese market.

The new factory will create over 60 new jobs in the first year in China with further significant growth expected by 2020. In the UK, Nylacast expanded by 30 people in 2015, with another 30 jobs expected to be created in the firm’s domestic market as it increases its capabilities and expands into new sectors.

Parts to the ForeTerex Materials Processing has opened a new global parts facility in Dungannon, Northern Ireland.

With an investment of over $7.2 million, this further supports Terex Minerals Parts and Service hubs and dealer networks globally. The state of the art facility consists of a main office block of 10,300 sq ft, where a dedicated and knowledge team of parts experts are on hand to answer all parts technical and sales enquiries.

The facility has extensive warehouse capacity of 5,500 m2, with the addition of

an external canopy of 650 m2 providing additional overhead storage for larger product types. Three dock levellers provide easy access for deliveries and container

shipments of the large scale parts inventory.  With over 86,000 live inventory parts, the facility is supported by a fully automated Oracle Warehouse Management System.

JCB Product Marks MilestoneA JCB product that revolutionised the handling of loads on construction sites and farms around the world has passed a major milestone – the production of the 200,000th machine.

The JCB Loadall telescopic handler was first manufactured in 1977, transforming lifting and loading tasks on building sites which until then had been carried out by a small team of men. On farms too the purpose-built machine boosted productivity, stacking bales, loading muck and shovelling grain, replacing rudimentary tractor mounted hydraulic loaders.

The first JCB Loadall – the JCB 520 model – was produced at JCB’s World HQ in Rocester, Staffordshire, on October 3rd, 1977 and in the first full year of production less than 300 machines were made by just a handful of employees. Today thousands of Loadalls roll off the production line every year and the business producing them employs around 800 people.

“From very small beginnings, the JCB Loadall has become a very important machine for JCB and for the construction and agricultural industries. Revolutionary is often

a word that is over-used, but in the case of the Loadall it is a perfect description. The way loads are handled on building sites and farms has never been the same since we introduced the Loadall in 1977,” says JCB chairman Lord Bamford. “The JCB team involved in manufacturing and selling the Loadall is to be congratulated on reaching the production milestone of 200,000 machines.”

It took almost 30 years for JCB to sell the first 100,000 Loadalls but it has taken less

than 10 for the next 100,000 to be sold – testament to the growing importance of the product and JCB’s strength in this sector. Today JCB is world’s number one producer of telescopic handlers.

When the original 520 model was launched it offered users a rough terrain machine with reach and performance way beyond the capabilities of conventional rough terrain forklifts. Putting the JCB machine out in front was its unique telescopic boom which brought a new solution to the problem of handling materials.

As the machine evolved, its use widened to all areas of the construction sector and the concept quickly spread to agriculture where it is used for a vast variety of tasks from loading grain, stacking bales and towing trailers.

JCB today manufactures a total of 90 different Loadall models, 88 of which are manufactured at the World HQ for global markets and two of which are made in India for the domestic market.

Blackwood is currently expanding its site in Belgium to provide its European customers with more gloss painting and storage capacity. In 2015, the company also teamed up with a partner warehouse in the USA to support its American customers.

Sheffield based Webster Technologies has come a long way since its beginnings developing drilling and cutting machines in the 1960’s for the coalmining industry. When the pits closed in the 90’s the company diversified into tunneling machines and construction equipment. Since then they have gone from strength to strength increasing its range of rockwheel cutting attachments and continuing to design and develop new products.

Headed by Ian Webster this family business has now branched out into the world of fibre broadband network construction and is a much sought after contractor supplying microtrenching machines to build high speed fibre networks in the UK.

Belinda Naylor business development manager, Webster explained,

“Microtrenching involves cutting a slot in the pavement where the fibre is laid into. The fibre is connected to homes so people can enjoy access to high speed broadband. The machines are operated by our trained drivers and feature our in house designed blades. People love it because the technique is less disruptive and faster than traditional methods which has a positive impact on build costs.”

Angela Naylor, financial director, Webster commented on joining the CEA, “As we continue to develop our range of products and expand into new markets now is a great time for us to join the CEA. S pace for the UK’s largest working construction event went on general sale at the end of January this year. Since then, stands have been selling at a rate of knots with 131 exhibitors

confirmed to attend the show.Promoted by the CEA (Construction Equipment Association),

PLANTWORX 2017 is going to be a much bigger event with 20 percent more exhibition space compared to the 2015 show – the 2017 show will occupy 140,000 square metres.

Harnessing Innovation

Chaired by broadcaster and CEA regular Nick Higham, the forum is a one-day conference for senior industry managers from across the construction supply chain, from clients and major contactors to specialists and manufacturers.

It will focus on how construction can improve productivity – and boost profits – through innovations that are changing the way the industry does business, both on site and in the boardroom.

The forum has been created and is being delivered by PlantworX and the Construction Equipment Association, with the support of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, BuildUK and the Chartered Institute of Building.

Chancellor George Osborne announced the creation of the NIC in October last year. It will oversee spending of £100 billion on infrastructure projects of all sorts.

The conference will give delegates the chance to hear and question Lord Adonis talk about the NIC’s role.

The government has made no secret of its belief that the construction industry can be more productive – allowing more projects to go ahead and helping the industry to increase margins.

New CECE ReportThe Committee for European Construction Equipment (CECE) is the voice of the construction equipment industry in Brussels. CECE’s Activities Report 2016 is now available. This new publication provides CECE members and other interested parties with an overview of the main activities of CECE in the previous and the current year. It gives factual information on the workings of the European trade association – and shows how the strong involvement and co-operation of many CECE member associations and companies gets results. It also lists the many partnerships and activities CECE is engaged in both at European and at international level. For further information see www.cece.eu.

Brexit BarometerIn the March survey of CEA members, 63 percent of those expressing a view supported the Brexit “Remain” camp – and 11 percent sided with the “Leave” option. However, over a quarter (26 percent) recorded an “Undecided” on their corporate position.

The survey results are similar to a poll of its members by the EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, in which 61 percent were pro-EU membership, 5 percent against and 24 percent undecided or with no corporate position. The CEA will conduct further surveys as the EU referendum vote gets closer.

Tipping Point for TTIP Negotiations?The European Commission hosted the European engineering and manufacturing industry associations, including CECE, for a de-briefing of the last negotiation round. The focus was on the feasibility of a tangible mechanical engineering chapter in the TTIP negotiations towards a free trade agreement between the EU and the US. Industry has asked for this to be included and has provided numerous examples of issues the chapter should address, but EU and US negotiators are slow in defining its content and objectives. Their verdict is now expected around mid-year. Industry has also highlighted that, as a consequence of TTIP, regulators on both sides of the Atlantic should establish a platform to discuss future regulations as much as the convergence of existing ones.

Micro CESAR Targets Tool TheftDatatag ID Limited, the power behind the official CESAR Scheme, has launched a new anti-theft system for small tools and equipment.

New Security Products Group teams up with CITSThe Construction Equipment Association plans to form a security products interest group which will complement the work of the Combined Industries Theft Solutions (CITS) organisation. CEA Chief Executive and CITS board member, Rob Oliver, explains the reasons for the move.

T he CEA has taken a keen interest in the problems associated with theft in the construction industry. Since 2007 we have been promoters of the CESAR anti plant theft registration

scheme which today protects over 250,000 construction and agricultural items of kit. During that time the nature of criminality has changed. Non CESAR protected plant is seven times more likely to be stolen but the overall proportion of machines stolen has dropped.

This is thanks to CESAR, advances in tracking technology, more active policing, other theft deterrent products and more general awareness of risk. Today CITS is putting the spotlight on the fraudulent acquisition of machines via “dummy hires” where the

thieves pose as bona fide hirers and are literally given the machines to make off with.

The CEA’s new Security Products Interest Group will work alongside, and help resource, CITS. The members will set their own agenda around product standards and accreditations, the showcasing of their latest innovations and regulatory compliance issues. Membership benefits will include discounts at PLANTWORX events, free participation at CEA conferences and gatherings and their own dedicated forum to develop policy. To register for the initial pathfinder meetings for the Group, manufacturers or suppliers of security related products and services should contact the CEA offices. ■

L eading insurers, manufacturers and industry bodies have raised the issue of small tool theft and Micro CESAR is the response from the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), who initiated

CESAR, and Datatag.The Micro CESAR identity system, with Datatag technology including

a unique RFID tag and a warning/registration label with an integrated QR code, will have the same effect that the CESAR Scheme has in deterring theft and assisting in recovery. CESAR, launched in 2007, has contributed to a 70+ percent reduction in the theft of large construction

equipment since launched. Micro-CESAR is poised to make a similar impact protecting small construction and landscaping equipment such as power tools, cut-off saws, hand-held hydraulic breakers and compaction plates.

As an added bonus to many companies the technology in the Micro-CESAR system can also be used as a stock management tool helping companies track tools in and out of jobs and allowing users to easily access on line health and safety advice and user manuals through the unique QR code and mobile enabled Micro CESAR website. ■

leadership and customer needs. That is the feeling of Bernd Holz, CECE President and sales director of Amman Europe (North). “We are determined to serve our customers well in the midst of multiple trends facing our industry. Being at the technical forefront is critical for us.”

Holz was speaking at a large industry conference organised by CECE and McKinsey & Company during the Bauma 2016 exhibition in Munich. The conference served to launch McKinsey’s new report on the sector, providing the most comprehensive perspective on the sector available to date. CECE supported the report through a survey of member companies. During the conference, a panel of industry executives and experts discussed the findings and took questions from the floor.

The report’s main findings are that the European construction equipment manufacturers are on the brink of profound transformation, driven by external factors such as rising competition from emerging markets, tightening regulatory requirements, the gradual growth of rental as primary customer segment for several machine types, weak economic recovery and the advancements of telematics and data-driven solutions. These trends are converging and collectively hitting the industry at once, with the potential to change the competitive landscape. The sector, concludes McKinsey, is about to shift priority from being operations focussed to becoming customer centric.

“As an industry, we are embracing the transformation McKinsey describes”, said Holz. “We’ve used the past years to make our production leaner and sustain our strength to compete globally. Now, we are shifting from selling just steel and hydraulics to an offering of more all-integrated services to support customers in executing their work. The key for OEMs will be how quick they can shift and implement the foreseen future in their strategy, and to ready ourselves for the era of digitisation. Of critical importance is our technology leadership. Many of us are planning to increase our spending on R&D as part of our shift to greater customer orientation. Technology is our heart and soul.” Holz called on the European

legislator to set the framework conditions to make sure the engineering champions of Europe, such as the construction equipment industry, can reap their potential.

The two most important technology trends for the sector in the next five years as emerging from the survey are the advancement of telematics and emissions technology. Telematics and remote-monitoring are closely linked with better understanding as well as serving customers. Emissions reduction technology is closely related to regulation and has been a focus for manufacturers for several years.

Increasing environmental aspirations and requirements ranked fourth in the top-10 of major trends expected to impact the industry, with specific product segments ranking this trend first or in the top-3. “We feel the heavy impact of the high volume of European regulations in our operations every day,” continued Holz. “We’ve come far in cleaner emissions technology and there will indeed be room now to divert resources to other technologies. But the latest stage in exhaust emissions law still has to be implemented on our production lines, and will continue to strain our budgets. Given the huge variety in our product offering, the complexity we’re facing should not be underestimated.”

The report characterises the construction equipment industry as a “low-volume – high complexity” sector, producing over 100 machine types and with numerous OEMs active, from large multi-national players to global niche players and local manufacturers. With over 350 corporate machinery groups in Europe, operating under more than 500 brands, the sector collectively turns over 35 to 40 billion euro in their European businesses.

The sector’s strength and diversity is shown by the fact that almost 75 percent of OEMs turn over less than 100 million euro a year, however competing successfully with their multi-billion peers in both local and niche markets. A true export powerhouse, 2.5 to 3 times more construction machines are exported than imported, whereas on average exports in the machinery sector only outweighs imports by 10 to 15 percent. Over 85 percent of all construction equipment production capacity is located in Europe, with over half of OEMs producing only in Europe. In all, the sector employs over 150.000 people directly, and two to three times more indirectly. ■

ConstructionWorx JCB Hydradig Launch

Construction WorX was among the first to see JCB’s revolutionary new Hydradig wheeled excavator. Mark Anthony reports.

R esearch and development budgets redirected to satisfy the legislators rather than the customers. But with Tier 4 largely in the can and

Tier 5 far enough away to be a problem for tomorrow, manufacturers are – at long last – getting back to what they do best.

Regardless, I approached the launch of JCB’s much-lauded Hydradig concept with a degree of trepidation. The company is no slouch in the marketing department; and its slow-burn lead up to the launch of what it has described as a revolutionary machine had hogged social media headlines for more than a month. But that was always going to be a bold claim in a mature industry in which variations on a proven theme is the usual order of the day.

Sadly, for a cynic like me, when the screen rose in the JCB theatre to reveal the machine in all its glory, my trepidation was replaced by admiration.

Automotive CurvesUnlike the automotive industry in which aesthetic appeal is a key ingredient, construction equipment is very much a function over form sector where some of the best and most productive machines look like the back-end of a bus. That is not the case with the Hydradig. In fact, from the roof down through the cab and counterweight to the low-slung engine, the 11 tonne Hydradig has a stylish, almost automotive curve to it. In fact, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it was the original Audi TT which, in an age of wedge-shaped and cloned cars, burst onto the scene with the confident swagger of a well-dressed man.

Of course, some super-curvy lines does not a revolution make. But those curvy lines are merely the wrapper within which a revolution resides.

It all begins with the engine; a JCB Ecomax power pack delivering 81 kW, impressive levels of low rpm torque and which has no truck with diesel particulate filters (DPF). Nothing out of the ordinary there; the same engine powers a number of other JCB products. But part of the trick of the Hydradig is the location of the engine – Not packed behind the operator, obscuring his rearward vision but low-slung and side-mounted. This radical repositioning not only aids visibility – a great boost for site safety – it also lowers the Hydradig’s centre of gravity by 1.5 metres to aid stability. Indeed, JCB claim that the machine can lift 1,000 kg and slew through 360 degrees

without the need for stabilisers or the need to drop the dozer blade. And the benefits of the engine relocation do not end there. By

dropping the power pack, all key service points can be accessed from ground level. No more need for operators to climb onto the rear of the machine; no more need for “boxing ring” enclosures to stop them falling off either.

As if that were not enough, the engine drives through a hydrostatic powertrain that affords a step-less 0-40 km/hour speed range. It is unlikely that this will trouble the record-breaking JCB Dieselmax “streamliner” car but 40 km/hour makes the Hydradig supremely roadable whilst helping flatten out the inclines that have traditionally plagued wheeled excavators of a more traditional form factor.

No More NoddingNear 50-50 weight distribution between the axles and a longer wheelbase than competitive 10-tonne machines delivers improved stability, increasing confidence for the operator. A 2,650 mm wheelbase provides a superior ride with secure handling. The lack of forward and back ‘nodding’ when driving means that Hydradig operators can maintain higher travel speeds between job sites, improving productivity, with JCB’s SRS boom suspension system available as an option to further improve ride comfort.

The machine is equipped with three steering modes as standard. Two-wheel steering for security at road speeds, four-wheel and crab steering, providing maximum manoeuvrability on site. A front axle with +/- 8° of oscillation delivers excellent rough terrain traction and stability. An optional reverse steering button on the main console allows the operator to use all three steering modes while the cab is facing in either direction. Hydradig offers an incredibly tight turning circle of just 3,946 mm on single tyres, rising to 4,511 mm when equipped with a front-mounted dozer blade.

Boom ChoiceCustomers can choose between a monoboom or a triple-articulating TAB boom, with three dipper lengths of 1,650, 2,000 and 2,250mm to suit a range of applications. Over the side stability, when running tyres alone, is 3% better than any competitive machine. All dig-end pins are equipped with impregnated bushes, allowing 500-hour greasing intervals. The dipper nose geometry matches that of JCB’s 3CX backhoe loaders and the firm’s larger midi excavator models, permitting the use of a host of buckets and powered attachments.

Hydradig can be used with a variety of tilt-rotator models and can be equipped with mechanical and hydraulic quick hitches from the factory. A high flow auxiliary circuit is standard and the machine can be equipped with two low flow circuits, plus dedicated hydraulic circuits for quickhitch operation. Fully guarded hose burst check valves are available on the boom, dipper and bucket rams, for optimum lifting safety.

A hand-held tool circuit is available as an option, allowing operatives to work with a wide range of powered hand tools, including breakers, road saws and pumps, utilising the hydraulic power from the Hydradig.

Hydradig can also be ordered with single tyres, extra-wide flotation tyres or twin tyres on each axle. Customers can also choose between any combination of dozer blades and stabiliser legs at either end of the machine, providing a modular design that can be tailored to an individual operation. Both parallel lift and radial lift dozers are available. Hydradig can also be supplied with a choice of towing hitches,

connected to the chassis or through the dozer blade. Capable of pulling up to 3.5 tonnes, the hitch comes complete with 12V electrics.

JCB will offer a dedicated Hydradig trailer as an option, allowing a single machine to travel to site with a range of attachments. The machine’s reduced tailswing allows it to rotate and change attachments within a single road carriageway.

So does all of this constitute a revolution; after all, the Hydradig retains the boom, dipper and bucket combination and still has a wheel at each corner. The ultimate proof might well be JCB’s domestic market which has traditionally eschewed the wheeled excavator concept in favour of another JCB mainstay; the backhoe loader. T he Hillhead exhibition – now thankfully back on its biennial schedule after a brief recessionary blip – is always a high point on the construction and quarrying equipment calendar. But as the Hillhead 2016 show follows immediately after the triennial plant fest that is Bauma, this year’s exhibition will provide an ideal opportunity to see the very latest kit for all those that were not among the half a million buyers and enthusiasts that descended upon the Messe Munchen in April.

I ndeed, the show will afford a debut to an unprecedented array of new equipment not previously shown in public in the UK.

Although the all-new Hydradig wheeled excavator (see page 29) is likely to attract considerable interest, it will be the newly uprated wheel loaders that will be the primary focus for JCB at what is ostensibly a quarrying and recycling exhibition.

JCB’s new 411 and 417 wheeled loaders are powered by the company’s own EcoMax Tier 4 Final/Stage IV compliant diesel engines, delivering 81 kW in the 411 and a powerful 108 kW in the 417. The larger 427 and 437 loaders operate with a Tier 4 Final/Stage IV Cummins diesel engine, offering 133 kW and 136 kW respectively.

In line with JCB’s overall emissions policy, both of these engines meet the latest emissions standards without the use of a costly Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), reducing operating costs and complexity for the customer. All Tier 4 Final loaders now feature a single-piece engine hood that can be electrically or manually raised to provide improves service access to the engine and cooling pack. The machines drive through automatic powershift transmissions for maximum productivity and efficiency.

All four machines feature fine mesh bonnet grilles to trap larger particles before the air enters a cyclonic pre-filter. The engine cooling fan provides a cyclonic scavenge system to remove dust particles from the pre-cleaner, rather than using hotter exhaust gases to deliver the cyclonic action. Wide core cooling packs reduce dust accumulation, cutting the downtime required to blow out radiator cores. The single-piece bonnet also helps to provide a seal around the engine bay, cutting dust and dirt ingress. A reversible cooling fan is available as an option.

The new Command Plus cab fitted to the JCB wheel loaders is an industry benchmark

first seen last year on the larger 457. This totally new ROPS structure has B pillar’s that have been moved out to the same width as the rear of the cab, providing a larger interior with a panoramic front windscreen. The machines feature JCB’s Command Driving Position, with revised pedals, an adjustable steering column and seat-mounted hydraulic controls.

Switches and auxiliary controls have been repositioned on the right hand B pillar, providing the operator with a simplified interior and easy access to all machine controls. The loaders have full colour LCD screens that incorporate access to the loader’s operating menus and act as a monitor for a rear view camera.

JCB’s CommandPlus Control system allows the operator to adjust auxiliary flow rates on the main screen. It is also possible to use the monitor to adjust SRS boom suspension engagement speeds where fitted, and the timing of cooling fan reversal to clean out the cooling pack cores. The screen also offers an operator help system that lists switch functions if required.

The cab benefits from increased internal space, as the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system has been repositioned outside the main cab structure. This provides additional storage for the operator, both behind the seat and in pockets in the front and side consoles. The new cab, in combination with on-demand cooling fans and the Tier 4 Final engines contribute to a cut in noise and vibration, reducing operator fatigue and boosting productivity.

The 411 and 417 loaders come as standard with HT loader arms for easy load handling and improved tool-carrier performance. The loader arms are available in parallel and non-parallel lift for ultimate shovel handling characteristics. Bucket capacity is 1.4 m3 for the 411 and 1.7 m3 for the 417. The larger models can be ordered with a choice of HT or power ZX loader arms, in a range of lengths to suit every industry

application. The 427 operates with a 2.4 m3 bucket while the 437 is equipped with a larger 2.7 m3 shovel.

Volvo Group UK Ltd will be exhibiting an impressive array of their latest hard and soft products – some of which are being exhibited for the first time in Great Britain.

With all of its GPE (General Purpose Equipment) now fully compliant with Tier IV emission regulations, visitors to the Volvo Group stand will be able to view the latest offerings with regards to excavators, wheel loaders, paving equipment and articulated haulers. There will also be representative models from the compact excavator range on show.

Elsewhere on the stand, the company’s display will feature representative models from Volvo Trucks including the world-class FH16, and two models from the FMX range of trucks.

Volvo Penta will once again have a very strong presence at Hillhead with several examples of their latest industrial engines and applications on view and as, one would expect, the Volvo stand will be completely powered by a Volvo Penta generator.

Hillhead 2016 is also the venue for the Volvo Operators Club heats where hopeful contestants can compete in three disciplines to win a place at the European finals taking place in Austria later in the year.

Once again Volvo will have a fully stocked merchandise shop where visitors to the stand can purchase clothing, scale models and novelty items from the company’s merchandise range.

impressive display yet again.

Miller UK will be showcasing its latest product innovations and welcoming visitors to its stand (W21) throughout the three days of the show. The company will also be treating delegates to live product demos of both its new hydraulic breaker – which has been shortlisted for an award at this year’s Construction News Awards – as well as its new PowerLatch Tilt coupler.

Visitors will be able to see the power of Miller’s hydraulic breaker in action at the quarry face during the show. A finalist in the Commercial Innovation of the Year category at this year’s Construction News Awards, Miller’s new enhanced hydraulic breaker incorporates three key features that set it apart from anything else on the market last year – an innovative top bracket designed to fit multi OEM machines and sizes, a tracker device to prevent loss or theft and an automated lubrication system. Since its launch last summer, it has already had a dramatic impact on efficiency, safety and security at construction sites across the UK.

Miller’s new PowerLatch Tilt coupler, which provides 180° tilt

functionality, boasts a compact design and unique side-mounted arms reducing the overall height and weight – leading to an increase in productivity. It builds on the proven Miller TwinLock design, with mechanical front and rear locks, and its self-lubricating actuator and low maintenance design saves valuable time on site.

Sticking with couplers, the TEFRA Tilt coupler from Hill Engineering was shown at Hillhead 2014 in prototype format. But the product is now in full production and will be taking centre stage on the company’s stand W18.

The TEFRA Tilt Coupler takes all the advantages of the award-winning TEFRA coupler but provides the added benefit of increased productivity and versatility in multiple applications. The attachment is available for machines sizes ranging from 3 to 20 tonnes and, like the TEFRA coupler, has been specifically designed to be almost maintenance free. This tilt system allows operators greater flexibility in the way they use their machines and turns each and every attachment into one that can be used at up to 180 degrees.

The heavy-duty motor is self-lubricating and there is no requirement to grease the tilt mechanism. In addition, Hill have reduced potential wear items so users have peace of mind regarding any wear on pins or bushes.

The new TEFRA Tilt coupler boasts advance technology from German manufacturers HKS. The magic behind Hill’s new attachment is said to be the XtraTilt power actuator to achieve the 180-degree tilt function.

The robust design of the individual components of the XtraTilt, made from high-strength, surface-hardened materials, allows rotation almost without play, even after prolonged operation.

=“We see this market growing significantly in the coming months and years as operators’ demand more from their machines potentially enter into new markets,” says Hill Engineering sales and marketing manager Oliver Phelan. “The quality associated with the Hill and TEFRA brands, coupled with the unrivalled back up services for our clients, means the TEFRA tilt should be an essential tool in any operators’ kit bag.”Also angling for a slice of the coupler pie is Geith which will present a wide range of products including its couplers and tilting couplers that are suitable for machines in the 2.5 – 85 tonne operating weight range. Visitors will also see Geith’s vast range of buckets, Heavy Duty Digging, Grading and Tilting buckets and the New Extreme Rock Duty Bucket.

The Geith Tilting Coupler, powered by PowerTilt©, suitable for excavators from 6 to 25 tonne will increase productivity by using the best of both world technologies: the PowerTilt from Helac and the Geith Quick Coupler. This unit is operated entirely from the cab and is capable of tilting any bucket or attachment by up to 180 degrees. For optimum safety, the system utilises a proven front and rear safety lock and safe release curl to open.

Komatsu will take the opportunity to highlight its position at the very cutting edge of hybrid excavator technology by displaying the new HB365LC-3, a high technology and environmentally sustainable 36 tonnes hydraulic hybrid excavator that made its debut at Bauma.

Compared to a standard PC360LC-11 excavator, the new Komatsu Hybrid excavator was designed to provide 20 percent fuel savings to customers. Today, KOMTRAX™ data from HB365LC-3 machines working in Japan since February 2016 show that Komatsu has reached this target.

Since 2008, when Komatsu commercialized the first hybrid construction equipment in the history of the industry, a total of 10,000,000 hours of operation have been registered by excavators benefiting from Komatsu‘s proven hybrid technology, which is today at work on over 3,500 units worldwide.

The new HB365LC-3 hybrid excavator features an EU Stage IV engine and ultra-low noise levels, and it further reinforces Komatsu’s strong commitment towards a substantial reduction of the environmental impact of earthmoving machines.

With an advanced electronic control system that manages the airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters and aftertreatment functions, the Komatsu EU Stage IV engine optimises performance, reduces emissions and provides advanced diagnostic capability. Customers benefit from lower fuel consumption with no loss of performance. Komatsu continues to use a Komatsu Variable Geometry Turbocharger (KVGT) and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve for precise temperature and air management control and for longer component life.

The HB365LC-3 cab provides a comfortable and quiet work environment that helps operators maximize productivity. The proportional control joysticks, which are standard, allow precise operation of attachments with comfort and ease. With its optimised engine control and fun-clutch system, HB365LC-3 achieves ultra-low noise levels (100dB external / 68dB internal), lower even than on the HB215LC-2.

The ROPS certified cab, specifically designed for hydraulic excavators, gains strength from a reinforced box structure framework. The cab is mounted on viscous isolation dampers for low vibration levels. A standard heated high back air-suspension seat comes with newly designed fully adjustable armrests for improved comfort. In addition to the standard radio, external devices can play music through the cab speakers thanks to an auxiliary input. The cab also has the benefit of two 12–volt power ports for the operator’s convenience.

A high-resolution 7” LCD widescreen colour monitor features enhanced capabilities and displays information in 26 languages for global support. The operator can easily select up to six working modes to match machine performance to the application. The new monitor panel provides information on AdBlue® fluid level, Eco guidance, operational records, fuel consumption history and utilisation information. For improved safety, a standard rear-view camera gives the operator a wide landscape view of the area directly behind the machine and is now incorporated, along with the gauges, as the operating default screen. An optional second camera is available.

The Hyundai Heavy Industries Europe stand at the Hillhead 2016 event will feature eleven machines including models from the new HX range of excavators and the new HL range of wheeled loaders. Hyundai is also planning live demonstrations in the quarry face demo area of the 52 tonne HX520L crawler excavator and the new 31 tonne HL980 wheeled loader, which made its debut at this year’s Bauma exhibition.

One of the most important innovations on the new HX series is the new and larger 8 inch touchscreen monitor – the cluster monitor displays information which mirrors what you would see on your smart phone and is 30% larger than previous models. It’s also easy to read and the main view of the screen can be adjusted according to the preferences of the driver. It can be controlled via touch control and/or new haptic controller. Connecting to a mobile phone is easier than ever with the bluetooth connection to the machine’s radio.

The new HX range is fitted with an ECO Gauge which enables the economic operation of the machines. The gauge level and colour displays engine torque and fuel efficiency level on the touchscreen monitor. In addition, the gauge indicates the status of fuel consumption such as average rate and the total amount of fuel consumed. The range can offer a reduction in fuel consumption from 6 to 12 percent – depending on the type of operation – in comparison to Hyundai’s 9A series of machines.

The HX series of excavators have a function that turns the machine off when it enters an ‘idling’ state which also minimises unnecessary fuel consumption and emissions. Operators can select operating mode and ‘idling’ time depending on work environments which improves its efficiency even further.

environments. Its mode can be selected and released on the monitor – on the excavation mode – pump flow can be more cleverly controlled, reducing fuel consumption.

The new machines can offer up to 10 breaker and 10 crusher settings. The boom can float freely by connecting to the cylinder head and/or the rod directly to the tank. A power boost button is available to over-ride floating boom.

The excavator display on the Hyundai stand will be complemented by a representative array of wheel loaders from the company’s new HL Series.

In addition to being more fuel-efficient – the new HL Series of machines have many other environmentally friendly features. Automatic shutdown of engine prevents unnecessary fuel consumption and emissions. The HL Series turns off the engine when it enters into an ‘idling’ state. Operators can select operating mode and ‘idling’ time depending on work environments which improves its efficiency even further.

The Eco Pedal gives feedback (increased pedal pressure) to the operator to stay in the engine’s economical operating range. The electro-hydraulic fingertip control, available on select models, provides additional precision and reduces operator fatigue. The colour-changing Eco Gauge provides the operator with a visual reference of fuel efficiency, total fuel consumption and average fuel data. Machines are equipped with five-speed automatic transmission with a lockup clutch (HL955-HL980) which improves efficiency and minimises heat.

The HL Series also feature a ‘travel speed limit control’ where the operator can limit the maximum travelling speed within a range of 20

to km/h to suit diverse working conditions which improves operational effectiveness. Silent, safe and comfortable, the 10 percent larger ROPS/FOG/FOPS new cabin with fully adjustable seat provides an ergonomic working environment that offers the ultimate in comfort for the operator.

As the company approaches its 50th anniversary in the UK compaction equipment market, Bomag will exhibit a range of equipment from across its milling, paving and compaction portfolio.

Bomag’s market leading range of self-propelled single drum rollers has been considerably strengthened with the arrival of the Stage 4 final equipped ‘Dash-5’ range. Bomag will show BW 177, BW 213 and BW 219 models in higher performance, twin-pump’ DH guise with one model equipped with Bomag’s VARIOCONTROL system that automatically adjusts compaction direction and amplitude to optimize compaction productivity and deliver unrivalled assurance.

Doosan Bobcat EMEA will be showing a wide range of new generation products from the company’s Doosan Heavy, Doosan Portable Power and Bobcat ranges for the first time at the Hillhead 2016 exhibition.

This includes the first showing of the flagship DX530LC-5 52 tonne Stage IV compliant excavator, where the phenomenal stability and very wide digging platform are combined with the best in class lifting capacities over both the front and side, with the lifting capacity over the side being increased by an impressive 12 percent.

Doosan will also show the new DX255LC-5 25 tonne crawler excavator for the first time at Hillhead. While overall dimensions are very similar to the previous DX255LC-3 model, the DX255LC-5 Stage IV excavator combines greater power with a 500 kg increase in operating weight, resulting in increases of up to 17% in lifting capacities over both the front and side and a 1 dBA reduction in sound levels.

The top-of-the-range DL550-5 wheel loader will be demonstrated for the first time in the UK. Like the DX530LC-5, it is powered by the Scania DC13 engine, which provides generous torque at low rpm, up to a 10 percent reduction in fuel consumption, excellent response and meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter.

The same engine powers the new Stage IV DL420-5 wheel loader on the stand, which like the DL550-5 is intended to meet a wide range of material-handling needs from loading and transporting granular material (such as sand and gravel) to industrial, mining and quarrying applications.

Hillhead 2016 will provide a platform for the market-leading ranges of portable compressors, generators and mobile lighting systems from Doosan Portable Power. Alongside the 7/41G Tough Top generator-compressor and the Stage IIIA compliant G100-IIIA generator, the company will be showing the new 12/254 portable compressor for the first time at Hillhead.

The 12/254 is part of a new platform of five large Doosan Stage IV compliant portable compressors, which also includes the 9/274, 9/304, 17/244 and 21/224 models, offering free air deliveries from 21.5 to 30.0 m3/min at operating pressures from 8.6 to 21.0 bar. The new Stage IV compressors build on the high standards established by the Stage IIIB models, again combining compact size and easy serviceability to ensure a fantastic return on investment.

The product display on Stand W10 will also include the latest from the market-leading Bobcat ranges of micro- and mini-excavators, skid-steer loaders, compact tracked loaders and attachments.

Among the products on show are the T450 and T590 compact tracked loaders and the E10 and E26 excavators. LOADMASTER α50, the enhanced colour touchscreen replacement for the LOADMASTER 8kiX is an on-board weighing system for larger loaders which will be making its world début at Hillhead 2016. The LOADMASTER α50 is designed to help increase loading efficiency, cut vehicle movements on site and ensure lorries are correctly loaded first time.

LOADEX 100 is a retrofittable scale installed on both tracked and wheeled 360 degree excavators and material handling machines to weigh the amount of material in the bucket, grab or clamshell.

LOADMASTER α100 is an on-board weighing scale for wheeled loaders. A CAN based system combining cutting edge sensor technology and signal processing techniques, the LOADMASTER α100 is designed to provide precise and consistent bucket weight information and to emphasise the gains in productivity and profitability that can be achieved with such technology.

LOADMASTER α100 is designed to operate within the fastest loading environments and toughest of conditions, to reduce cycle times and maximise tons per hour performance.

iSOSYNC enables control of the loadout operation and inventory, productivity & traceability management. The software can be used with either LOADMASTER α100 or LOADEX 100 and allows the rapid transfer of job information from a central computer to the loader or excavator and the resultant load information is sent back to the PC upon completion.

Sandvik Construction says exhibiting at Hillhead is a continuation of their key strategy of focusing on more locally orientated activities, bringing them closer to meeting the local needs of their customers wherever they operate in the world.

The company will be using the opportunity presented by an exhibition of such importance to the quarrying, construction and recycling industries to emphasize areas of expertise and service that transcend the traditional supplier-customer dynamic. Multi-Purpose Minefield

In April 2013 the European Commission published a Decision in the Official Journal of the EU Community (OJEU) stating that Denmark had been correct in taking enforcement action against such a product which could perform more than one function.

The basic charge was that the multi-purpose machine had been supplied without a FOPS (falling object protection) as its intended use did not require one to be fitted. However, they believed that it was foreseeable that, at some point, an owner might fit an attachment which brought with it a risk from falling objects and that therefore a FOPS should have been supplied as standard.

The Decision, requiring no further placing on the market of the product without a FOPS, and requiring corrective action for machines already placed on the market, applies throughout the EU.

The supplier took the matter to the European Court of Justice, basing their case on several arguments:1. That Denmark did not do a proper risk assessment2. That the Danish authorities and the Commission had wrongly

applied the Directive in that there was no risk from falling objects, and had incorrectly applied the concept of foreseeable misuse.

3. That the supplier had adequately covered any risk of future use of the machine in a different application by warning about this in the instructions.

4. That it was unfair to target this particular product when many other multi-purpose machines had not had action taken against them.

All their arguments were dismissed in July 2015 and costs were awarded against them.

Probably the most important element is that in point 3, above, the court ruled that it was not sufficient for a supplier to warn in the instructions that certain safety devices might need to be installed if the use of the machine was changed, as the hierarchy of measure requires that such risks are removed by design at the time of placing the machine on the market.

This judgment is being used by market surveillance authorities and applied to similar products, including in the UK.

Powersplit Finding FavourSince the introduction of the Exhaust Emissions Directive in 1999, the construction machinery industry has drastically reduced the emissions from its products. According to the German Engineering Federation, the VDMA, emissions of nitric oxide and diesel particulates have been reduced by more than 95 percent. Speaking at Bauma 2016, Joachim Schmid, managing director of the VDMA’s Construction Machinery and Building Materials Machinery Association, describes the status quo: “With the aim of optimising energy efficiency and obtaining the best possible work result, these days construction machines decide for themselves what is most economical in a particular work process: to transfer the power to the wheels mechanically or hydraulically. The drive chain delivers only as much power as is needed, energy is stored and delivered as required. And for years the eco mode has been standard in many types of machinery.”

Despite what has already been achieved, there is still scope for further improvements to transmission systems in construction machinery – especially when manufacturers and suppliers combine their expertise. This was the case in the TEAM project (development of technologies for energy-saving transmission systems in mobile machinery), which culminated in spring this year with the presentation of a “green wheeled loader”. For three years 18 machinery manufacturers and suppliers – among them Caterpillar, Danfoss, Deutz, Hydac, Liebherr and Rexroth Bosch – five university institutes and the VDMA worked on an innovative operating strategy for linking parts of the drive system.

A demonstration wheeled loader was presented which combines an optimized diesel engine, a powersplit transmission system, displacement – controlled working hydraulics and a hydrostatic hybrid system in a new drive chain. In comparison to a current series machine this new development is over ten percent more fuel-efficient in practical operation.

Special power-split transmissions are definitely gaining ground in wheeled loaders. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marcus Geimer, Chair in Mobile Machinery at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, comments: “In a wide variety of operations, these transmission systems deliver improved efficiency as compared to hydrostatic transmissions or switchable converter drives.” Geimer reports that corresponding prototypes and designs have already been presented at various specialist conferences.

Portal to a Sea of StatsThe Construction Equipment Association is developing a new information portal to provide members with greater access to market intelligence. CEA Market Information Manager Paul Lyons reports.

W ork has begun on development of a new Market Information Portal on the CEA website (thecea.org.uk), which will be dedicated to providing statistics and market information for

CEA members. Information will be available on both equipment markets and the construction market, with the initial focus for both being on the UK market. The intention is to provide a “single source” for members to access key market information and updates. CEA members will be sent alerts when market updates have been added to the new portal.

Equipment MarketsTo provide information on the UK equipment market, both existing data sources and new initiatives are being explored to help improve tracking of market demand and activity. Existing sources include the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as well as trade data on imports and exports of equipment and components. In addition to this, a number of new initiatives are being explored with other companies and trade associations to provide new information sources. This includes looking at sourcing an overview of data from CESAR machine registrations, and exploring possibilities for new surveys to assess market prospects.

Existing information sources includes monthly data from the ONS on Machinery and Equipment not elsewhere classified (NEC). This consists of company turnover from UK equipment and component manufacturers. The graph below shows the ONS data up to January 2016, with output in recent months showing signs of stabilising after a steady decline during 2015. January 2016 levels were at similar levels to December 2015, albeit this was still 6.5 percent below January 2015 levels. Output in 2015 overall showed a 13 percent decline on 2014 levels, with reduced exports a key contributor to reduced turnover during the year.

Analysis of the data from the ONS on an annual basis shows that industries included within the Machinery & Equipment NEC category that are relevant to the CEA account for c.60 percent of the total output reported. This includes construction, mining and lifting equipment and parts. The remainder of industries within this category includes agricultural equipment, office equipment and a number of other types of machinery.

Comparison of the ONS data on an annual basis with Off-Highway Research data on production of construction equipment shows similar year on year percent changes. As a result, monitoring of ONS monthly data is judged to be a useful indicator of “activity levels” for UK equipment and parts output.

In their latest update on the UK market, Off-Highway Research report that sales of construction equipment stabilised in 2015 at record high levels since the 2006 and 2007 “boom”, showing a 1 percent reduction on 2014 levels. The forecast for equipment sales for 2016 is to show some easing back by -8 percent on 2015, but remaining stable overall at high levels.

Updates on major European equipment markets are available from country trade associations such as the VDMA, UNACEA and CISMA, and the plan is to incorporate bulletins from these associations in the new CEA website portal. In addition, CECE produce quarterly economic bulletins for the European market including updates on the construction and mining

markets, as well as equipment markets. CECE recently published their annual report for 2015 showing a 2.5 percent decline in equipment sales in Europe. However, if the impact of a very weak Russian market is excluded from this, sales would have shown a 3.5 percent increase in 2015. This is a reasonably positive outcome within overall global equipment sales that showed an 11 percent decline in 2015. CECE’s forecast for the European market in 2016 is for modest single-digit growth in equipment sales.

McKinsey & Company have been working with CECE on a study of the European construction equipment industry, and have just released a report of their findings (Re-engineering construction equipment: from operations focused to customer centric). This report highlights changes and challenges within the industry to 2020. It anticipates growth reaching 5-6 percent p.a., and highlights two key opportunities from growing demand in markets outside of Europe, and the increasing importance of aftermarket business. This report is available to CEA members on the website.

Construction MarketsAn extensive range of published information is readily available on the UK construction market from a range of companies and websites. This includes updates on construction orders and output, as well as a range of surveys and forecasts. The main purpose of the new portal on the CEA website will be to provide members with a “single source” for these key market updates.

A significant part of the construction market information on the portal will consist of updates from industry experts Glenigan. In particular, this will include updates on the “Glenigan Index” which is considered a leading indicator for the industry, and provides monthly updates on new project starts. It will also include access to market surveys and regional analysis within the UK market. This should be a valuable new source of information for CEA members. ■

T he CEA and the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) have identified a need to be communally involved in the framing and submission of Trailblazer Apprenticeship standards

for construction plant maintenance and service engineers. These employees in our sectors are the backbone of construction plant owners and dealers and there is widespread recognition that steps must be taken to ensure they are provided with the right structured training programmes and recognisable career paths.

The need is driven by the Government’s intention to remove funding for existing ‘Framework’ apprenticeships by 2020 and also by pressure put on the supply chain by public sector and other clients. Moreover, the Government’s imposition of the apprenticeship levy at 0.5 percent of employers’ pay bills over £3 million will have a significant impact on larger companies. Therefore, for employers to derive best value for their spending of the training vouchers that will be issued as part of the levy scheme, it would make sense to have apprenticeship standards tailored specifically to our sectors.

In essence, solutions are being sought for two main groups of employers, both of which require Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships for their employees:• Construction plant owners, represented by CPA; and• Construction plant dealers who represent the OEMs who are represented

in turn by CEAAt a recent meeting of CEA and CPA members with particular interests in this area, the respective sectors’ requirements were compared with the scope of the Trailblazer Standard for the agricultural ‘Landbased Engineering’ sector which was approved in December 2015 and they were found to be very similar. Changes to the Trailblazer guidelines

by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills have led to some re-writing of this approved standard being necessary. Therefore, with the BIS intention being to rationalise Trailblazer standards rather than proliferate the number of standards available, the opportunity was taken by CEA/CPA to approach agricultural equipment sector’s Landbased Engineering Training & Education Committee (LE-TEC) with a view to a collaboration in the incorporation of the construction equipment sector’s needs and this has been accepted. LE-TEC (which comprises the Agricultural Engineers’ Association, the British Agricultural & Garden Machinery Association and the Institution of Agricultural Engineers) had coordinated the development and submission of the approved Landbased Engineering Trailblazer Standard.

Moving forward, spring-time activity will involve construction plant owners and dealers working together through the joint CEA/CPA forum to agree requirements for some small-scale extension to the approved landbased standard. It is felt that any extension required may only amount to 5-10% of the existing standard’s content and that this reflects how similar the needs of the landbased equipment and construction plant sectors are.

Further, associated work will include the exploration, identification and preparation of alternative assessment plans and training pathways to the approved landbased standard, the development of any new optional units thought to be necessary, and the identification of employers who would be formal members of the consortium in whose name the submission would be made.

Once this preparatory work is done, the intention is for the CEA/CPA forum to work with the agricultural land-based equipment sector through LE-TEC to agree a revised and updated Trailblazer Standard that reflects the broader coverage for submission to BIS. ■

Promising Future A Myerscough College apprentice has been recognised as

among the best in the country for her outstanding work on a national level.

Construction Plant Apprentice Katie Long (pictured) was honoured at the 2016 Women in Construction Awards which took place in Manchester last month. Katie was named as Best Apprentice of the Year in the under 25’s category.

20-year-old Katie works for UK Forks in Exeter, which is part of Vp Plc and is studying for a three-year apprenticeship delivered by Myerscough College, based in Preston Lancashire, in partnership with CITB.

The programme that Katie is enrolled on involves periods of block release training at the College’s new £5.5 million Engineering Centre at the main campus in Bilsborrow, near Preston. Katie is initially studying at Level 2 and will then progress onto the Advanced Level 3 programme in the final year where she will complete her Apprenticeship in the summer of 2017.

Katie explains her reasons for choosing to apply for the apprenticeship: ‘’I completed a short engineering course whilst at school. For me an Apprenticeship is a fantastic way to earn, learn and pave a career path within the industry.

‘’In the future, after I qualify, I would like to gain permanent employment

and hopefully progress within the company. I would also like to look at higher education options and gain as much knowledge and experience as I can. I would recommend Apprenticeships to other young people as a fantastic way to enter the industry.’’

Myerscough College Principal, Ann Turner said: “Becoming the first woman to become Principal of the college, I know how tough it can be to succeed in traditionally male dominated sectors.

’The achievements of Katie and our other female apprentices should be celebrated and I’m sure they’ll go onto fantastic careers within their chosen fields. Myerscough College is proud of its reputation as a leading provider of training for the land based and specialist industries. I wish Katie every success for the future.’’ ■

T his is a major milestone for the company that was among the first to introduce the concept of mini-excavators into the UK in 1979. That year, the company sold just 41 machines; but the popularity

of mini-excavators has gone from strength-to-strength ever since.It took five years for Kubota to reach 1,000 machines in 1984. By

1988, yearly sales had increased to 1,000 per annum and by 1998, approximately 20 years since the concept was first introduced, Kubota had sold its 10,000th machine within the British and Irish market. This exponential trend continued into the new millennium, with 25,000 Kubota mini-excavators sold by 2006.

In the last 10 years, growth has been phenomenal, with Kubota reaching the 50,000 landmark following a stellar 2015 for the firm, setting new records in terms of volumes and market share for the 3rd consecutive year. Whilst the brand is widely known for its mini-excavators within the UK and Irish construction market, Kubota has also expanded its product offering in 2015, with the launch of new ranges of wheeled loaders and tracked carriers.

To commemorate the achievement internally, the business will be showcasing the 50,000th machine, identified as a Kubota’s K008-3 micro excavator, within the reception of its UK’s headquarters in Thame Oxfordshire, alongside a plaque honouring the feat. The sold model of the K008-3 has been delivered to Hawes Plant & Tool Hire Ltd via Kubota dealer Boss Plant, which is fitting as the plant hire firm has been one of Kubota’s longest standing construction customers.

Externally, a whole host of activity is planned throughout 2016 to celebrate the 50,000th sale. Firstly the business will be exhibiting its original Kubota KH10 model at the Hillhead show in June, where it will be positioned next to a ‘special edition’ gold painted KX-71

machine, considered to be a modern day equivalent in terms of size and power to the KH10. Kubota will then donate the ‘gold-digger’ to the Lighthouse Club, who will be auctioning it off at its prestigious summer ball, with all money donated going to the construction industry charity.

Innovation Matters

F or the construction industry as a whole, Crossrail’s significance goes way beyond the successful delivery of the project itself. The simple truth is that major programmes, such as Crossrail, have the capacity

to bring about industry-wide change.To start with some facts. Crossrail will provide 120 km of new

railway across London including 21 km of twin bore tunnel and 10 new stations. Its modern, air conditioned, wi-fi-enabled trains will provide a 10 percent increase in London’s rail transport capacity. It is on time and on budget.

Crossrail has seen a transformation in the employment of apprentices and the approach to sustainability, stakeholder engagement and innovation.

The latter has been a unique and game changing initiative in an industry that underinvests in innovation: typically 0.05 percent of revenue is invested in innovation compared with 5 percent or more in the manufacturing sector.

So, what can we do about it?Crossrail’s response has been to set up the first systematic programme approach to innovation on a major project. Innovate 18, the Crossrail Innovation Programme, is fundamentally based on sharing ideas.

Crossrail invited its Tier 1 firms to join and invest in the programme and, after three years, the innovation programme has borne out this early confidence by achieving, by conservative estimates, a benefit-to-cost ratio of around 7 to 1.

Run by a team of four staff drawn from Crossrail and its Programme Partner (Transcend, a JV between CH2M HILL, AECOM and Nichols), Innovate 18 has identified 140 or so innovation champions across Crossrail who in turn have identified and encouraged innovators.

At peak, it had around 1,000 people engaging with the programme and, importantly, it sent out a powerful message that Crossrail was open to innovation.

At around £800,000, the innovation budget is relatively small. But it has been enough to enable some excellent developments – such as applications to speed up approvals processes (e.g. the ‘lift and escalator app’); the use of the telescopic clam shell excavator; and the use of micro electro mechanical sensors such as the Utterberry.

What is more, Innovate 18 is not the only source of innovation on Crossrail. There has been innovation in the procurement process, the adoption of the NEC3 contract and from all the companies and organisations involved – for example, in the use of robotic bolt drilling machines.

So what happens now? In February, the Crossrail Learning Legacy was launched to capture the evidence and experience from Crossrail for the benefit of others. In addition, Innovate 18 is being migrated to the Infrastructure Industry Innovation Platform, I3P, which will provide a pan-industry

sharing mechanism between the innovation programmes of major projects and programmes.

Potentially, this may also lead to some form of national construction innovation centre, such as those for the aerospace and automotive industries now operating at the Manufacturing Technology Centre near Coventry.

There is also the UK Collaboratorium for Research and Innovation in Construction which is seeking to coordinate the wide range of activities being conducted by 14 of the UK’s leading universities.

All of this work amounts to a positive trend towards increased innovation, research and development and a greater level of sharing and mutual benefit for the whole of the infrastructure industry. ■
