We have been a reliablesupplier to our customersfor over 40 years. It isstill our aim to deliverhigh quality at sensibleprices. Our business isyour personal safety andwe are not prepared tocompromise.

Dear Business Colleagues,

Manfred Huck GmbH was founded as a one-man operation over 40 years ago. Since then, work on product development has been consistent and continuous. We are delighted to beable to pass these benefits on to you again in 2005.

We now supply an entire range of safety nets with a flame-retardant finish. These nets retaintheir flame-retardant properties, even when used outside.

New products include safety nets with additional overlay panels. This solution doubles thebenefit to you by protecting workers from dust and small falling objects as well as a fall.

Our nets for securing pallet racks show how diverse the applications of a safety net are. Theyprotect people using the aisles from falling objects. Or what about our Dralo® wire rope nets? They satisfy particularly high demands and offer an ideal combination of design and practicality.

The risk of a fall during highbuilding work is undisputed.Every year, the expertspublish alarming figures. Inview of these figures, youshould not compromise onmeasures to protect those atrisk. The argument aboutimmense pressure on costs isonly partially valid and thereis a fundamental differencebetween "cost-conscious”and "cheap”. If somethingactually happens, it will beexpensive - days lost as aresult of the accident, a poli-ce investigation of the causesand sequence of events as

well as closure of the buil-ding site, perhaps for severaldays, not to mention thedamage to your image.

A price-performance compa-rison is certainly worthwhile.HUCK nets always come outwell thanks to their impressi-vely high and consistent qua-lity. People who secure theirbuilding site responsibly willcertainly save the most in thelong run. Once the safety netis in place, all attention canbe focused on coordinatingindividual sections of thebuilding work. The net can

be used for all subsequentwork. Apart from the factthat a safety net allows wor-kers to move around freely, they feel safer, which ena-bles them to work morequickly and effectively.Contractors confirm this timeand again.

However tempting a cheapsafety net may be, we canonly advise against it.Quality has always paid off.

It’s your decision!

Don’t make false econo-mies. You could regret it.After all, apart from alot of money, the lives ofyour employees are atstake. Cheap safety netshave very little in reser-ve to compensate forageing and can be up to25% weaker than HUCKsafety nets. As one of the leading netmanufacturers in Europe,we set the standards forsafety and stability ofvalue.

Do you really want totake the risk?

All specifications of the energy absorption refer to the 3 x 3 m test net!

1.1 HUCK Safety Nets It is important for thoseinvolved in the construc-tion of buildings orbridges, installation workor other similar activitiesto secure the areas inwhich work is carried outin order to protect wor-kers in the event of a fall. One good way to providethis sort of protection is toinstall a personal safetynet, which can be used tocover large areas.

HUCK safety nets arecertified and bear theappropriate GS safetymark. Our ISO 9001quality managementsystem ensures thatproduction is continu-ous and meets theproduct standard.

The benefits of safety nets• Unlike PPE equipment,

they allow workers tomove freely.

• They provide collectiveprotection for all work andtransportation in the secu-red area.

• Should anyone fall, netprovides a softer landingthan rope because of itslarge plastic deformations.

Important standards, regula-tions and lawsThe UK legislation HSG33says thath “the preferredmethod of securing the lea-ding edge in industrial roo-fing is to use new technologysafety nets”. These nets aremanufactured and installedaccording to EN 1263-1,EN 1263-2 and the newWorking @ height regula-tions 2005. Only safety netsconforming to these stan-dards should be installed.

Type S safety nets confor-ming to EN 1263-1 Safety nets are horizontallyerected nets with rope threa-ded into the edges of themesh. Such rope-edged netsare called type S safety netsand conform to EN 1263-1.This category of net compri-ses 4 net types, which aredistinguished by their mini-mum breaking strength andmust meet the followingrequirements:a) Minimum strength of rope

edge: 30 kNb) Maximum mesh size:

60 mm or 100 mmc) Minimum energy absorp-

tion of a 3 x 3 m test net

There are 4 types of net:Net Type Minimum Safety Factor Ageing Maximum

Braking Strength Factor Mesh SizeA1 2.3 kJ 1.5 individual 60 mmA2 2.3 kJ 1.5 individual 100 mmB1 4.4 kJ 1.5 individual 60 mmB2 4.4 kJ 1.5 individual 100 mm

The minimum energy absorp-tion when new, which inclu-des the safety factor andindividual ageing factor, iscrucial** (see table andexample). A new safety netmust have an ageing reserveof at least one year.Meaning in our example fornet type A2: the minimumenergy absorption when newis at least 4.14 kJ.

Minimum- Safety- Energy absorption Ageing- Minimum energybraking strength factor without ageing factor absorption when new2.3 kJ x 1.5 = 3.45 kJ x 1.2 (e.g.) = 4.14 kJ

1.5 HUCK Safety Nets Overlay Panels And Overlay Nets

Overlay nets and panels areused in combination withsafety nets. They do notreplace personal protection.Suitable safety nets can befound on pages 1.2 – 1.4.

Overlay panels for safety nets

As well as providingpersonal protection, safety nets are oftenrequired to catch smallfalling objects. If this isthe case, we suggestusing an overlay panelor close-meshed overlaynet in combination withour safety nets (pages1.2 – 1.4).

1.8 HUCK Safety NetsSafety Net Installation Information

Applicable standards andregulationsPersonal safety nets mustmeet the technical safetyrequirements of EN 1263-1.When erecting or installingsafety nets, it is important tocomply with EN 1263-2 andBGR 179.HUCK safety nets complywith EN 1263-1.

UseSafety nets are used to pro-tect people who fall.Typically, they are used forbuilding work at greatheights, e.g. the constructionof indoor facilities (seephoto 1) and overheadcables or as a safety featureon scaffolding. They allowworkers to move around freely.

LabellingEvery safety net must belabelled clearly in accordan-ce with EN 1263-1 (seephoto 2). The label mustinclude the following infor-mation:

• Date of manufacture andname of manufacturer

• Net type in accordancewith DIN EN 1263-1

• Precise item designation(item number)

• Minimum energy absorp-tion capacity or minimumtensile load of test mesh inaccordance with ISO 1806

• Number of the inspectionauthority that certified thenet.

Annual inspectionOn every HUCK safety net, there are lead seals with thesame identity number on thesafety net label and testmesh (see photo 3). Thisensures that the safety netand test mesh belong together. No more than 1 year afterthe date of manufacture, thefirst test mesh must be sent toan authorised tester (e.g. themanufacturer). This testerverifies whether the net stillhas the necessary strength/energy absorption capacityand produces documentaryevidence of the results.

No. 9700: Inspection costper test mesh

If the test results are posi-tive, you will receive a newtest badge bearing the iden-tity number, which you thenattach to the relevant net (seephoto 4). The net can thenbe used for another year. Please also refer to the sec-tion on “when to discardnets”.

Installing and dismantlingpersonal safety netsNets may only be installedby workers who have beentrained by the contractor.Protection must be providedfor those undertaking installa-tion (safety harness, platformlift).

Anchoring strength requirementsSafety nets should be secu-red to constructions withappropriate load-bearingcapacity. Each suspensionpoint must be designed for acharacteristic load of at least6 kN.

The distance betweensuspension points must notexceed 2.50 m.

A): Double-strand suspensionrope Z (breaking strength ≤ 15 kN)

B): Single-strand suspension rope L (breaking strength ≤ 30 kN)

drope

D >= 3drope

l = width of safety net (shortest side)

SuspensionNets are suspended withropes, snap hooks, straps orclips. If single-strand suspen-sion ropes are used (photo5B), the breaking strength ofthe rope must be at least30 kN. If double-strandsuspension is used (photo5A), 15 kN ropes will suffice.Further safety information canbe found in BGR 179.

Dimensions/minimum sizeThe values given below assu-me a minimum size of35 m2, whereby the shortestside must be at least 5.00 mlong.

Height of fall/minimumnet widthSafety nets should be suspen-ded as close as possible tothe underside of the workingarea. The height of the fall(Hi2 = difference between the

height of the surface fromwhich the person falls andthe point of impact on thesafety net) must not exceed6 m. Up to 2 m from theedge of the net (Hi1), themaximum permissible heightof fall is 3 m.

Space underneath thesafety netSafety nets should be suspen-ded in such a way as to pre-vent those who fall from ban-ging into solid objects. Thesize of the deformationdepends on the length of theshortest edge of the net andthe height of the fall (seetable 7 and photo 7). Inaddition to the size of thedeformation, a safety zoneof S > 0 must be observedfor traffic, etc.

Connecting safety netsWhen connecting two ormore safety nets, joiningropes should be used in sucha way that the space bet-ween the join does notexceed 100 mm and thesafety nets cannot movemore than 100 mm awayfrom each other. Safety netscan also be overlapped butthe overlap must measure atleast 2.00 m.

When to discard netsNets must be withdrawnfrom use in the following cir-cumstances:• Nets that have already

been used to break a fall• Nets that no longer meet

minimum breaking strengthrequirements (please alsorefer to the section on“annual inspections”)

• Faulty nets (= very worn nets,

defective mesh, damage tothe rope edge or clips)

StorageStore in a dry place, neverstore near a source of heatand avoid contact withaggressive substances suchas acids, bases, etc. Do notexpose to UV radiation.

2.7 HUCK Side Protection Netting

Example of a side safety securing point with sidesafety nets and side safety holders.

Side protection netting

In addition to fall protectioninwards (into the structure),when laying roof sheetingand in other roof construc-tion work in the steel frameconstruction field, the pro-blem of fall protection out-wards also arises.

There must always be asafety net if the height ofthe fall exceeds twometres. According toBGI 815 (a trade associ-ation publication relatingto the installation of pro-file sheets and porousconcrete slabs), ceilingsand roofs with a slope of ≤ 20° must have asafety net at the side oraround the edge.

Here we recommend oursystem for securing roofedges in combination withtype S safety nets confor-ming to EN 1263-1.

Our side protection holderslinked with side protectionnets EN 1263-1 type S maybe fixed to concrete supportsetc. when protecting flatroofs, so that protectionaround the edges is still pro-vided for subsequent roofwork after the trapezoidalsheeting is in place, sincethe brackets need to be dis-mantled for the exterior walllining.

Please let us have your detailed enquiry.

The ‘building industry infor-mation on the security ofbrick guardrails, side protec-tion etc…’

The outward inclinationof the side protection stan-chion must be 0° (vertical). Indeparture from this, the incli-nation may be up to 45°from the vertical for construc-tional reasons (see fig. 1).

The length of theside protection stanchionsshall be selected such that thedistance of the upper sur-round rope radially to theedge of the roof• in the area of the side pro-tection stanchion is ≥ 2.00 mand • in the middle of the inter-mediate space is ≥ 1.50 m(see fig. 1 and 2).

The maximum spacing allowed between the bracketswhen using textile surroundropes is 10 m.

There must be no gaps ofover 10 cm in the lower zonebetween the fall-off edge andthe netting.

If assembling equipmentyourself, you must follow theassembly instructions andinstructions for use providedwith each product.

ApplicationsGuardrail nets are used pri-marily for roof work. Otherareas of application includeworking on platforms, bridgebuilding, etc. They are usedto protect people who falland fitted to roof scaffoldingor at working height on faça-de scaffolding.

Applicable standards and netdesignsEN 1263-1, DIN 4420 andGerman Safety RegulationsBGR 179 and BGR 184apply to guardrail nets.Guardrail nets are type Usafety nets (a safety net forvertical use on load-bearingconstructions). The middlerail is not required whenusing guardrail nets. Themesh size must not exceed100 mm and rope is stitchedinto the nets all the wayaround the edge.

Assembly of guardrail netsGuardrail nets must be secu-red to the scaffold rail. Theymust be kept taut and notallowed to sag. There arevarious ways of attachingthem to the scaffold. Werecommend Isilink clips, which are already sewn intoyour guardrail net at inter-vals of no more than 75 cm(in line with regulations).

Storage• Store in a dry place• Never store near a source

of heat• Avoid contact with aggres-

sive substances such asacids, bases, etc.

• Do not expose to direct UVradiation

Faulty nets Faulty nets (damaged mesh, defective rope edging) ornets that have already beenused to break a fall must bewithdrawn until they havebeen tested by the manufac-turer or someone with appro-priate specialist knowledge.Repairs may only be underta-ken by such specialists.

LabellingEvery guardrail net must belabelled clearly in accordan-ce with EN regulations. Thelabel must include the follo-wing information:

• Date of manufacturer andname of manufacturer

• Net type in accordancewith DIN EN 1263-1

• Precise item designation(item number)

• Minimum energy absorp-tion capacity or minimumtensile load of test mesh inaccordance with ISO1806

• Number of the inspectionauthority that certified thenet

Annual inspectionOn every guardrail net, thereare lead seals with the sameidentity number on the safetynet label and test mesh (seephoto 3). This ensures thatthe safety net and test meshbelong together. No more than 1 year afterthe date of manufacture, thefirst test mesh must be sent toan authorised tester (e.g. themanufacturer). This testerverifies whether the net stillhas the necessarystrength/energy absorption

If square mesh nets are required it is technically impossible tosupply all net sizes without a seam. All nets are manufactured with diamond mesh to the greatestpossible width and then converted to square mesh. The resulting seams cannot be avoided for technical reasonsand do not reduce the quality of the net.
