Facility overview /

RDS workscope

Refurbishment of all Drilling Facilities which had been de-activated for 20 years. The work involved an extensive programme of destructing and rebuilding most of the drilling facilities modules.

Equipment layout was reconfigured and installed as each module was refurbished. Several systems, i.e., kill system, BOP activation etc., were redesigned from the original to take account of changes in legislation. The derrick was refurbished and reconfigured for the fitting of a topdrive. The drillfloor layout was extensively changed to accommodate additional pipe-handling equipment. Drilling control and monitoring systems were replaced and upgraded to enhance management of the drilling process.

The project was divided into 8 workscopes:

Derrick and components

Drilling equipment and systems

Bulk mud systems

Well control equipment and systems

Pipe handling

Lifting and transport equipment

Power generation and electrical systems

General steel repairs

Each workscope was divided into 3 sections:

Destruct

Re-build and refurbishment

Commissioning and certification

Value delivered by RDS Thistle Drilling Rig, a first generation North Sea drilling package had been idle for 20 years. Following a significant and safely executed Brownfield upgrade, this facility restarted drilling operations in January 2010 and is now capable of drilling well depths of 17,500 ft.

Issue(s) / Challenge(s) & RDS Solution(s)

As advanced corrosion had occurred in all the Thistle drilling modules, a comprehensive structural survey was undertaken at the beginning of the project. This survey determined that although secondary steelwork was in very poor condition, primary steelwork, i.e., module frame supports, deck under-framing and derrick were serviceable. A destruct plan was devised such that module equipment and corroded structure could be removed without further damage to the primary elements. Work processes had to be devised to take account of personnel safety.

On completion of the destruct phase, the re-build and refurbishment phase was designed such that modules and equipment were rebuilt from the ‘bottom up’. The ‘tie-in’ points for each module were carefully identified and kept to a minimum to alleviate any problems with alignment.

Comprehensive commissioning and certification procedures were developed such that as each module was finished, equipment and part-system pre-commissioning checks could be undertaken, significantly reducing the time required to commission the completed project

Extended Reach Drilling (ERD)

Owner / client Exxon Mobil

Type of contract Reimbursable (against agreed rates schedule)

Contract start / finish April 2006 to March 2007

RDS project no(s) GB 12 / 3013

Key RDS subcontractors NOV Varco (topdrive, ERD system & pipe handling equipment)

Facility overview /

RDS workscope

Major drilling facility upgrade of both Beryl Alpha rigs to enable extended reach drilling from the installation. The project involved upgrading and modifying the following equipment / systems:

Upgrade: Topdrive Electronic drilling system & auxiliary braking Pipe deck machinery including a pipe conveyor Hydraulic power unit

Modifications: HP mud system

Refurbishment: Mud process package

The work involved an extensive engineering programme to deliver a comprehensive destruct and construct schedule. Several systems i.e., HP mud system were redesigned from the original to take into account the expected ERD well returns. The derrick was reconfigured to enable a more powerful TDS to be installed thus enabling greater depth wells to be drilled.

The drill floor layout was improved to accommodate the new equipment i.e., EDS, conveyor, TDS. The pipe deck was modified to accommodate a PTC & PDM which reduced manual handling of DP to ensure operation carried out safely.

Drilling control and monitoring were replaced and upgraded to enhance management of drilling process.

Pipe handling equipment was installed to enable ‘tripping’ at extended reach to be achieved in a safe and timely manner. A new hydraulic power system was installed to run the pipe handling equipment.

As some of the envisaged wells to be drilled were to a greater depth than those drilled with the original equipment, the HP Mud system was upgraded from 7.5 kpi to 10 kpi. New shakers were installed to enhance mud flows from the well, back to storage tanks which were also increased in size.

Value delivered by RDS Enabled ExxonMobil / KCA Deutag operations to reach previously unachievable drilling / well targets. Currently deepest well drilled 24,000 ft.

Issue(s) / Challenge(s) & RDS Solution(s)

In consultation with ExxonMobil and KCA Deutag operational personnel, a detailed analysis was undertaken by RDS to determine the most suitable drilling facility requirements for the envisaged wells.

A conveyor system (PTC) was designed by NOV to fit between the pipe deck and drill floor. The PTC is a reliable and safe way to continuously feed tubulars on and off the rig floor. The PTC was a variable length conveyor that can be adjusted for varying transfer lengths during well slot skidding of the rig floor. To feed the conveyor from the pipe deck a pipe deck machine (PDM) was installed. This system handles tubulars on the pipe deck without physical intervention by rig crew. Moving horizontally along a deck mounted track, the PDM covers the entire pipe deck area to transfer tubulars to and from the pipe deck and conveyor.

There are well known problems associated with drilling extended reach wells . In close consultation with NOV Varco, an Electronic Drilling System was installed that constantly measures the drilling parameters to control weight on bit by constant adjustment of the drawworks brake. These systems are monitored and displayed to the driller in a reconfigured doghouse.
