• My design follows Foster’s earlier work, in which he used modern materials in a spare and simple design

• I used a context-specific design and environmental principles where possible

• The site is located within an industrial estate. In order to follow Foster’s principle that design should follow the existing culture of place, I used a conventional steel portal frame construction clad in colourbond.

Example 2: Wall detailing (see next slide)

• Portal frames are traditionally constructed of steel or wood. However, the use of glass as a cladding reflects Foster’s utilisation of modern materials to improve design. In order to maximise the impact of this feature, I shifted the first floor away from the exterior cladding to create a glass veil.

Example 3: Roof cladding (see next slide)

• Foster conceals services such as wiring and plumbing in order to maintain the appearance of simplicity in design. I therefore used a double layer of colourbond cladding on the roof and walls to conceal services. In addition, I incorporated an insulation layer within this feature in order to improve heat conservation in line with environmental principles.
