Week 7 Journal

In this week’s tutorial, we went to visit a construction site near Victoria market.

The building is an apartment with 55 suites. The span of the building is 12 m.

The name of the construction company. The view from bottom of the apartment.

We can see the structure of the wall is running bond. It is commonly used for cavity

and veneer walls. Also, it’s composed of overlapping stretchers.

From the right picture, we can see many pipes on the ceiling. The white and thick is

the top is PVC pipe. It’s for sewage and storm water. Also, the steel ring on the PVC

pipe is for protection and fixed.

There are 3 different concrete be used in the building. The caulfield basswood also

be used.

The picture on the left is the unfinished ceiling. We can see the structure of the

ceiling. The steel blocks could bear the weight of the ceiling. The picture on the right

is the finished one. The steel blocks and the pipes are all hidden.

The thick pipe is for the kitchen. The ventilator could help to get the lampblack out

through the pipe. We saw many trusses on vertical top. Also the university beams.

Different protection is for the different section of pipe.

Different kind of basswood is used for wet area. Also, from the left picture, we can

see lower 30mm slabs.

We can see the frame of the big sliding door on the left picture. It is made by wood.

The right picture is taken on the roof of the building. It uses the reinforcement

skilinig and the roof truss is on the column connection.

About this part, it is panel to panel or slab to panel. The

hole is the connection. It holds the horizental things go

into the slabs. Also, concrete sits 30mm inside.

E-learning

Flat and sloping roofs. Waterproofing membranes are needed for very flat roofs.

Concrete roofs. The integrated beams with cantilevers – one with a parapet wall

and one with a tapered cantilever.

Steel trusses are another efficient roofing system which predate portal frames.

Open-web steel joists are an efficient joist design spanning between beams.

Two major propositions:

1. Architecture is mainly about enclosing space.

2. The main problem in building is spanning space.

How to span a space in stone construction?

The stone beam or slab

The arch, first used in brick, not stone.
