Myanmar crowned with successin Merdeka Tournament

The final of the 38th Merdeka

Tournament 2006 was held in Malaysia on

29 August and the Myanmar emerged

champions by beating Indonesia 2-1.

In retrospect, we can find that

Myanmar athletes and football team won

successive victories in soccer and track and

field in Southeast Asia. The Myanmar football

team had often been crowned with success in

the Asian soccer.

Throughout the history of the Merdeka

Cup, Myanmar became champions in 1964,

1967 and 1971, stood second in 1966, 1968

and 1970 and third in 1965, 1969, 1973 and

1975. In 2005 also, the Myanmar youth

football teams (U-17 and U-20) emerged

champions in ASEAN Youth Soccer

Tournaments.

Winning victories at international level

is something Myanmar people have to be

proud of and reflects high soccer standard of

the nation.

In an effort to improve the sports

standard, the government has provided

assistance to sports sector and entire people

have supported sports teams to be crowned

with success in every competition.

Myanmar team played with

tremendous spirit, unity and strength and

won the trophy of the 38th Merdeka

Tournament 2006 after it had been away

from the trophy for over 30 years. Hence, we

would like to urge the Myanmar athletes to

continue to step up their efforts so that the

latest victory could bring similar success to

other sports events in future.

TEHERAN, 29 Aug—Iran said on Monday a US threatto form an independent coalition to impose sanctions ifthe UN Security Council failed to act over Teheran’snuclear programme was an insult to the Council’s work.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday thatthe US Ambassador to the United Nations, John Bol-ton, had indicated Washington was prepared to actindependently with allies to freeze Iranian assets andrestrict trade if the Council did not.

The United States has called for a swift response ifIran does not heed the Security Council’s on Thursdaydeadline to halt uranium enrichment.

Analysts say divisions, particularly opposition fromveto-wielding powers Russia and China, could delayany moves. “These remarks (by Bolton) are an obviousinsult to the Security Council,” Iranian GovernmentGholamhossein Elham told a weekly news conference.

“These remarks are just bullying and baseless re-marks and show that they are not competent to be amember of the Security Council,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR, 29 Aug— Muslim countries shouldstep up efforts to fight corruption or risk scaring awayforeign investors, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawisaid yesterday. The Prime Minister said the absence ofinvestors would mean continuing down the path ofpoverty. He was deeply saddened that Muslim countriesas a group ranked low in Transparency International’sCorruption Perception Index, occupying more thanhalf of the bottom 10 places.

The best record for a Muslim country was 29thplace. “Although the CPI is merely a survey ofperceptions, it has become a widely used referencepoint for potential investors. Therefore, it is vital forMuslim nations to focus their attention on improvingtheir position in the CPI,” he said in his keynoteaddress at the Organisation of the Islamic Conference’sfirst Anti-Corruption and Enhancing Integrity Forumyesterday.

He said even if the findings in the CPI weredebatable, there was no arguing that the ranking had aneffect on countries’ economic and political interests.

He felt the imperative to fight corruption andenhance integrity went beyond the need to merelyperform better in surveys and indices, as the Muslimworld’s problems of poverty, poor governance andlimited education opportunities were exacerbated bycorruption.—Internet

LONDON, 29 Aug — Afurther four satellitegalaxies of the Milky Wayhave been discovered, bringing the amountknown to around 20, NewScientist magazine re-ported on Monday.

The discoveries weremade by a team led byVasily Belokurov of theUniversity of Cambridge,Britain.

ANTALYA (Turkey), 29Aug — A bomb blast killedthree people and woundeddozens in the coastal cityAntalya on Monday in asecond day of attacks onTurkish resorts apparentlydesigned to scare off touristsand hit the economy.

Bombs on Sunday inTurkey’s largest cityIstanbul and the coastalresort of Marmariswounded 27 people, and aKurdish guerilla grouplinked to the outlawedKurdistan Workers Party(PKK) said on Monday itcarried out those attacks.

There was noimmediate claim ofresponsibility for Mondayevening’s attack inAntalya, a Mediterraneantourist hub.

Four more way satellitegalaxies discovered

The satellites arenamed after theconstellations in whichthey were found — ComaBerenices, Canes VenaticiII, Hercules, and Leo IV.

Astronomers usednew observing techniquesand detailed sky mapsincluding the Sloan DigitalSky Survey (SDSS) tolook for the galaxies.

The largest andsmallest galaxies areHercules and ComaBerenices, which areabout 1,000 and 200 lightyears across, respectively.

Like most of the otherdwarfs discovered bySDSS, the finds are muchsmaller and fainter thanthe dwarfs that wereknown previously, according to Belokurov, who was quoted as saying,

“They should not reallybe called dwarfs — theyare more like hobbits.”

The dwarf galaxies arethought to be the buildingblocks of large galaxies, such as our own MilkyWay, which is about100,000 light years wide.

The pace of dis-coveries suggests thatmany more such satellitesremain unknown, whichwould present a seriouschallenge to models ofdark matter as “warm”,fast-moving particles.

Based on the numberof dwarf galaxies SDSShas found so far, theresearchers estimate thatthere may be somethingin the region of 50 smallsatellites around the MilkyWay.

Her research was pub-lished as biologicaljournal Cell’s cover storyin its 25 August issue.

Her discovery washailed as a breakthroughfor development of newdrugs to fight the Africansleeping sickness andother diseases.

Lee said discovered apreviously unknown wayof forming the fatty acidsthat form the outer layerof all animal cells after athree-year research.

The parasites namedtrypanosomes use anenzyme called elongasesto change their outerlayer, in a process shedubbed the elongasepathway, to hide itselffrom the human immunesystem.

The discovery couldopen the way to treatmentof other parasitic illnesses

as well as the sleepingsickness, Lee said.

“It’s highly likelyother organisms, es-pecially other trypanoso-matids such as thatcausing Chagas’ diseaseand leishmaniasis (Dum-Dum fever), may utilizethe elongase pathway forfatty acids synthesis.

Thus, the pathwaycould be a drug targetfor other diseases,” shesaid.

Sleeping sickness, which is the main targetof Lee’s research, istransmitted through thebite of the Tsetse fly.

Once the parasiteinvades the human nervesystem, the patients sufferconfusion, personalitychanges, sleep distur-bance and eventuallycoma and death.

Maung Maung KyawThe most appropriate means for a developing

The 30-year National Education PromotionPlan covers the task of carrying out the ten tasks of thebasic education sector and 21 tasks of the highereducation sector beginning 2001-2002 academic year.Enrollment of all school age children

The number of female teach-ers is much larger than their male counterparts.Extension of post-primary schools

Suitable primary schools have been upgradedto post-primary schools for ensuring greater access tomiddle school education. There were 5,545 post-primary schools in 2005-2006 academic year, upfrom 696 when the project started in 2001-2002. As a result of changes in teaching programmesof the higher education sector, diploma courses, MAresearch degree courses, and Ph.D degree coursesunprecedented in the past have been opened. In 1988,there were only 79 academic programmes. Now, thenumber has increased to 192 due to the fact that newfields compatible with the modern period have beenadded to the education sector.Cooperation with international community

Since 23 July 1997 when Myanmar joined theAssociation of South-East Asian Nations as member, the nation has participated in the regional educationnetwork. Myanmar has hosted many workshops andseminars on educational subjects. Simultaneously, many Myanmar scholars have represented the moth-erland at similar workshops and seminars held abroad.Rural education

The purpose of the Myanmar education pro-motion plan is not confined to producing literateand educated persons of the urban areas. With aview to broadening the scope of knowledge andintellectual power of people in rural areas wheremore than 70 per cent of the nation’s populationreside, rural self-reliant libraries have been openedextensively the length and breadth of the nation. Sofar, the number of rural libraries has reached 54,707.The knowledge and education of people can beenhanced all the more by installing radios, TV sets, video players and computers in all the libraries intownships.

With wider and active cooperation of the pub-lic in trying to realize the educational goals and workprogrammes designed to promote public knowledgeand education and vocational education of the peo-ple, national development plans will be more mean-ingful and successful in the international arena.

O'Neill, former head of the Australian RugbyUnion (ARU), has chosen not to stay on whenhis contract ends to consider other career op-portunities and for family reasons.

"It's been fantastic and I've had an absoluteball," O'Neill told a news conference on Tues-day. "We have achieved a lot and laid fantasticfoundations but the time is right for me to moveon to other things.

"On the one hand, my involvement withfootball has been an exhilarating ride andwhile we've achieved so much, the potential totake the game even further is enormous," headded.

"But with our rapid progress has come anincredibly intensive and demanding workloadand that creates a lot of pressure on personaltime and family life."

O'Neill, 55, joined the FFA after leaving thechief executive post at the ARU in 2003 and wasseen as key to the revival of soccer's fortunes inrugby-mad Australia.

LONDON, 30 Aug — Elderly patients in hospital are at risk of becoming malnourished because nursesdo not have enough time to help with feeding, Age Concern said on Tuesday.

develop complicationsduring surgery and have ahigher mortality rate.

“Hospitals are in dan-ger of becoming bad forthe health of older peo-ple,” said Age Concerndirector general GordonLishman.

“The majority ofolder patients are beingdenied some of the basiccare they need, leavinghundreds of thousands ofolder patients malnour-ished.

“It is shocking thatthe dignity of patients isbeing overlooked, and thatAge Concern has to run acampaign to fight for theimplementation of suchsimple measures.”

Age Concern saidnine out of 10 nurses didnot always have enoughtime to help patients whoneeded assistance withmeals and said, as a result, patients over 80 had a fivetimes higher prevalenceof malnutrition than those

under the age of 50. With its “Hungry to

be Heard” campaign, thecharity called on hospi-tals to introduce protectedmealtimes where nursesfocus just on feeding pa-tients.

Pauline Ford, a RoyalCollege of Nursing ad-viser for older people, toldthe BBC the survey un-derlined how most nursesneed more assistance andsupport.

“It is unacceptable ifpatients are not getting thehelp they need,” she said.“Nurses desperately wantto be able to give thestandards of care theywere trained to give, butneed the support and re-sources to do so. Mostimportantly they need tobe given the time to care.”
