Tense-lax alternation: Vowel Shift
Vowel Shift environments:
- Trisyllabic Laxness: the stressed vowel is in (at least) the third syllable from the end, e.g., vain-vanity, provoke-provocative, etc.- Laxing by suffix (Laxing suffixes): e.g., final-finish, state-static, etc.- Pre-cluster Laxness: e.g., keep-kept, assume-assumption, etc.- Laxness by free U: the stressed vowel is followed by a letter <u> in free graphic position, e.g., state-statue, grade-gradual, etc.- CiV Laxness: the stressed vowel letter <i/y> is followed by the CiV configuration in spelling, e.g., decide-decision, revise-revision, Syria, etc.
Tenseness rules: (are stronger than laxness rules!)- CiV Tenseness: all stressed vowels other than <i/y> followed by the CiV configuration in spelling, e.g., nation, deletion, motion, fusion- Prevocalic Tenseness: vowels followed by another vowel, e.g., Leo, variety, hiatus, etc.
