Considerations

1. Download data from Digimap (zip file)

2. Process the data

3. Import data to

software

4. Analyse data / Create

map

•e.g. ArcGIS,

MapInfo,

CAD,

OpenSource

software•Your data

will NOT look

as it does in

Digimap

I. Unzip the

data file

II. Convert the

data to a

format

compatible

with your

software - if

necessary

Unzipping standard Digimap data.zip files

Use the standard Windows unzip facility:

1. Data.zip 2. Unzip data.zip:

Contents.txt,Conditions.txt,

Data files

Page 5: Considerations: –Unzip data –Data in Digimap – what data formats? –Data conversion –Applying a style to the data Desktop sharing – Working with OS MasterMap.

Unzipping Digimap GML data files

2. Unzip data.zip with a standard Windows unzip

utility:

• Contents.txt• Conditions.txt• GZip file

1. Data.zip

3. Unzip GZip file with a

suitable tool:

GML data file

GZip files

• Windows standard unzip will not work with GZip files – try:– Gzip, 7Zip, WinZip

• NOTE: May not be necessary to unzip the GZip file, depending on conversion requirements.

Data in Digimap – what formats?

• Not every product is available in every format:– for example, raster data products are only available in

TIFF format

Page 14: Considerations: –Unzip data –Data in Digimap – what data formats? –Data conversion –Applying a style to the data Desktop sharing – Working with OS MasterMap.

Data in Digimap – what formats?

• Some products are available in more than one format, e.g. Strategi is available in NTF, DXF, SHP and MID/MIF:

What are all these different formats?

NTF (National Transfer Format)NTF is a format designed specifically for the transfer of spatial information. NTF originally stood for National Transfer Format, and was a de facto standard created in 1985 by a working group within the geographic industry. In 1992, it was revised to Version 2.0 and adopted as a de jure standard. It is now officially called BS 7567 "Electronic transfer of geographic information (NTF)".

GML (Geography Mark-up Language)GML is an international standard for storing and transporting geographical information developed by the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC). This is an open standard, based on XML, compatible with a host of web-based technologies and encourages interoperability.

TIFFA common public domain image file format that is supported by many graphic applications. TIF files can also represent raster and image datasets that can be imported into ArcGIS, MapInfo and several other geographical information systems.

Page 19: Considerations: –Unzip data –Data in Digimap – what data formats? –Data conversion –Applying a style to the data Desktop sharing – Working with OS MasterMap.

DXFAutoCAD DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk for enabling data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs.

SHP (ArcView Shapefile) A geographic data format created by ESRI (ArcGIS is an ESRI product), which consists of three different files: SHP, SHX, DBF.

MIF/MID (MapInfo export format) The MapInfo® MIF/MID format is an ASCII format, using two files. The MapInfo® MIF file contains the layer structure, map projection and the graphics. The corresponding MapInfo® MID file contains the attribute values in a comma separated format.

TAB (MapInfo TAB format)The MapInfo TAB format is a popular geospatial vector data format for geographic information systems software. It is developed and regulated by MapInfo as a proprietary format.

What are all these different formats?

• For more details on formats, see the EDINA guide ‘OS Collection data formats and conversion guidance’:– http://edina.ac.uk/digimap/support/training/

TIFF format

• Digimap raster data are supplied as TIFF files - most GIS or CAD software will accept TIFF image files, with no need for conversion.

• TFW files also supplied – TIFF World files - contain the location, scale, and rotation of a map that is stored as a TIFF image.

• Remember to keep the supplied TIFF files and the TFW files in the same folder! Otherwise your GIS software cannot locate the TIFF geographically.

Page 22: Considerations: –Unzip data –Data in Digimap – what data formats? –Data conversion –Applying a style to the data Desktop sharing – Working with OS MasterMap.

Shape files (SHP)

• Shape files do not require any conversion prior to use in ArcGIS.

• Remember to keep all constituent parts together - SHP, DBF, SHX:

Converting data from Digimap for use in ArcGIS

• Some data formats are incompatible with ArcGIS software:– NTF: OS Land-Form Profile, OS Meridian 2, OS

Strategi, OS Land-Form Panorama, OS Code-Point, OS Boundary Line

– GML: OS MasterMap, OS VectorMap Local– DXF: OS Land-Form Profile, OS Meridian 2, OS

Strategi, Os Land-Form Panorama, GB National Boundaries, GB National Grids
