On this fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time the second reading is

from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians which begins,

“Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.” In context

Paul is not only asking the faithful at Corinth to reflect upon

their particular calling but also the circumstances of that

calling and the call of all Christians to be Disciples of Christ

and doers of the word. Each of us has multiple callings in

life; husband or wife, mother, child, firefighter, attorney,

teacher or truck driver. St. Paul suggests that the various

and diverse callings are not distractions or diversions. They

are in fact particular ways of following our baptismal call

which is a call to holiness and a conversion of heart.

We can fall into an easy trap of divorcing our work and other

life obligations from our life of faith. St. Paul reminds us

though that the whole of our life is our path to holiness. Con-

sider your own calling(s). What are the ways that your vari-

ous callings can become a deeper expression of your faith?

The ways you interact with others, your personal standards

and the example you set are some of the ways our individual

callings can be deepened. As we do these things our con-

sciousness of God’s presence grows and deepens.

We are called but it is not a one size fits all calling. It is per-

sonal and it is in that personal consideration of that calling

that we give room for the spirit to deepen our own devotion

and holiness. -Fr. Moore

The Way

The Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time January 29, 2017 Page 5

The Gospel Reading for today is what is popularly

called the Sermon on the Mount. Many think it is the

absolute epitome of Jesus’ teachings. To be sure it

tells us how we are to live our lives, the attitudes we

are to have. We must remember that those who were

waiting and hoping for the Messiah expected a military

leader, one who would lead them in battle against their

oppressors.

In His Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives a more accu-

rate perspective of Who He is. He begins what we call

the Beatitudes (the word means “blessings”) with

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the king-

dom of heaven.” In a sense we are all “poor in spirit.”

Without the guidance and strength provided us by the

Lord there is no way we can escape this poverty of spir-

it, of spirituality, if you will.

That is why we often say that living God-centered lives

is at the very core of stewardship. Being a disciple of

Christ translates into being a steward of our many gifts

and blessings. Some scholars believe that Jesus may

have given this sermon often during His ministry.

Those who followed Jesus and became the earliest

Christians, the first members of the Church, were fond

of quoting and referring to what the Lord said on this

occasion. As stated Jesus provides us with the secret

of living a good life. If we rely on Him and follow Him,

we will be blessed.

NUMBER OF U.S. ABORTIONS

DROP DRAMATICALLY

WELL DONE, PRO-LIFERS!

“In 2014, an estimated 926,200 abortions were per-

formed in the United States, 12% fewer than in 2011; the

2014 abortion rate was 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women

aged 15–44, representing a 14% decline over this period.

The number of clinics providing abortions declined 6% be-

tween 2011 and 2014, and declines were steepest in the

Midwest (22%) and the South (13%). Early medication abor-

tions accounted for 31% of nonhospital abortions, up from

24% in 2011.” https://www.guttmacher.org/journals/

psrh/2017/01/abortion-incidence-and-service-availability-

united-states-2014

“The abortion rate reached its zenith at 29.3 [ per

1,000 women of child bearing age] in 1980 and ’81, and

the total number of abortions peaked at more than 1.6 mil-

lion in 1990, according to Guttmacher.” [Tom Strode, Bap-

tist Press http://bpnews.net/48188/report--abortion-rate-

hits-alltime-low]

…The authors of the Guttmacher report, Rachel Jones

and Jenna Jerman, were honest enough to concede that

their favorite explanation for any decrease in abortion–an

increase in contraception–doesn’t explain it all. They tell us

“State efforts to restrict abortion have maintained their

momentum, and states have enacted hundreds of new re-

strictions pertaining to abortion since 2011.”

Legislation requires pro-life legislators. Education, sup-

port for women, passage of pro-life laws, and political activi-

ty together explain why abortions dropped under the million

figure in 2013 for the first time since 1975….

Looking ahead Jones and Jerman make a keen obser-

vation:

“When it comes to restricting abortion, Congress and

the Trump administration have ready-made options that

have either already been attempted at the federal level in

recent years or were pioneered in the states.”

Just to mention three: the Pain-Capable Unborn Child

Protection Act, the law in16 states; the Unborn Child Protec-

tion from Dismemberment Abortion Act, on the books in six

states; and defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they

continue to perform abortions.

…Guttmacher and the Abortion Industry for which it

fronts laments the decline. Everyone else knows this is good

for unborn babies, their mothers, and the nation. [Dave An-

drusko http://www.nationalrighttolifenews.org/

Welcome Neighbors… Please help us on the RAIS (Refugee Assistance and Immi-

are many universal items that are used by all. There will be

shop. Just place your donations in the bin and I will take

them out to the RAIS office on Mondays or Wednes-

The Bible and the Virgin Mary is a dynamic twelve-

part video series that beautifully explains the

Catholic truths about Our Lady, showing how she

has been a part of God’s plan to bring salvation to

the world since the beginning of time. In addition

to explanation of dogmas, answers to common

objections, and demonstration of Mary’s presence

in the Old and New Testaments, this study

discusses Church-approved Marian apparitions

that play an important role in Catholic Tradition.

It’s sure to help Catholics and non-Catholics alike

grow in an understanding and appreciation of the

Mother of God.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School is excited to invite everyone

to our School Open House, after the 11:30am Mass, from 1-

2pm. We would love to share our personal school story

where students experience faith-filled educational opportuni-

ties that enhance wonderful academic achievements. Faith,

Family, Excellence permeates throughout the school. Come

to the Open House and see for yourself!

Our school Open House is the beginning of Catholic Schools

Week. Each day of this next week, students, staff, and fami-

lies of St. Elizabeth, celebrate Catholic Schools within our

Parish, our Community, our Students, our Nation and our

Staff and Volunteers. We will be participating in a service

project to tie fleece blankets for Clare House, celebrate

Mass with other Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese, hold a

school Spelling Bee. Our Catholic future is our chil-

dren! Please keep us in your prayers while we celebrate our

Catholic Faith.

Kathy Gustafson, Principal

Kindergarten has been busy practicing two songs for our

Catholic School’s Week Assembly to thank our volunteers

and teachers! We have also been busy counting. Did you

know that we have been in school almost 100days? Kinder-

garteners are going to celebrate 100’s day with “hundreds”

of counting activities. Kindergarteners are 100 days smart-

er!!!

Sarah Afoa, Kindergarten

Second grade is dreaming of warner climates as we look

at temperatures throughout the United States. Students will

analysis temperatures and investigate different types of

storms.

Amanda Donato, Second Grade

The Third graders have been learning about the scientific

process. Each student chose an experiment and presented

it to their classmates. They collected data, made graphs and

worked hard to figure out why and how things work. The

class hosted an open house to present some of their infor-

mation. Here is what the students thought about this scien-

tific process;

Experiment day was fun. I really loved it. All the

experiments were really cool! – Malcolm

It was awesome and I’m glad I got to do it.

– Nicholas

I liked Experiment Day because everyone got to do

a fun experiment. – Makenzie

Experiment Day was cool and very fun. I wish I had

everything to do all the cool experiments. – Loyal

Carolyn Gustafson, Third Grade

After learning about nutrition, the 4th graders have decid-

ed they could make bags of trail mix to deliver to the Brother

Francis Shelter. They decided the ingredients to be put into

the mix, and each student brought in one ingredient. We will

deliver these bags to the Brother Francis Shelter on Monday

and take a tour of the facility.

Rachel Richardson, Fourth Grade

The students are working on their essays as to “Why they

love Catholic Schools.” This is to get prepared for Catholic

Schools Week next week.

In Math, the sixth grade class is working to understand

the Distributive Property and getting ready for a test over

Functions and Expression. In Language Arts, we are learning

about indefinite pronouns, both singular and possessive and

in Social Studies we have started studying Greece.

Eddie Ezell, Sixth Grade

Kindergarten, First and Second grades are working on 1st

and 2nd letter alphabetizing within the Library. Third grade is

working on 3rd letter alphabetizing.

Eight students from the 5th and 6th grade went to West High

school and competed in Battle of the Books. One team

came in 9th place out of 54 schools. Eight students in 3rd

and 4th grade will also compete on Wednesday at West High

school in the Battle of the Books. We wish them good luck.
