2. Conservation *Conservation is the wise use of naturalresources to prevent them from beingused up. *People must work to make naturalresources last longer. *People must also make sure the use ofnatural resources does not harmecosystem. 3. Composting *Composting- a method that recyclesfood waste into fertilizer for soil. *In a compost pile, bacteria break downplant material into fertile soil. This reduces the amount of solid wastetaken to landfills. 4. Reusing *Reusing items instead of throwing themaway saves resources. Examples: Old clothes used as rags or given away Empty bottles used as containers Cloth napkins instead of paper napkins Reusable lunch and drink containers insteadof throw away containers. 5. Recycling *Recycling- reprocessing a waste materialto be used again in a new product *Paper, glass, aluminum, plastics and ironare often recycled *It takes less energy to recycle a materialthan to create a product from brand newmaterials 6. Recycling Aluminum 7. Review Questions:1. How many times can aluminum berecycled?2. Why would a farmer benefit fromcomposting?3. What items do you regularly recycle? 8. Recycling Facts: We can recycle many things, fromaluminum cans to cell phones! Check out this website for more info: http://recyclingfacts.org/content/fun-recycling-facts 9. Soil Conservation *Contour farming is when crops areplanted along the slope of a hill. Thisprevents soil from being washed away. *Planting trees as wind breaks canprevent soil from being blown away. 10. Pollution *Air Pollution- burning fossil fuels canpollute the air Smog is air pollution Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gasproduced by cars, trucks, factories andcigarettes 11. Acid Rain *Acid Rain results when pollutants in theair combine with water. *Acid rain is harmful to living and nonlivingthings. 12. Acid Rain: Acid rain reducesthe amount ofcalcium in the soil. Snails need calciumfor their shells Birds eat snails Bird eggs are low incalcium Baby birds may nothatch. 13. Acid Rain *Acid Rain is harmful because most organismsneed a neutral environment to thrive. For Example: Fish need a water pH ranging from 6to 8. 14. *Acid Rain can destroybuildings and statues. 15. Water Pollution *Water pollution reduces the supply ofclean water and harms organisms living inthe water. *Chemicals from pesticides, fertilizers, factories, boats, cities, and homes arewashed into rivers and lakes Chemicals can also leak into thegroundwater. 16. Check your understanding1. What are two ways to conserve soil?2. How are acid rain and air pollutionrelated?3. What are three kinds of water pollutants?(see chart on page 383)
