A publication of the UMC Good Shepherd

As we engage the mission God has entrusted Church of the Good Shepherd with this fall, I thought I

would remind us of the exciting and meaningful trust God has put in us. The mission statement of Good

Shepherd centers us, focuses us, drives and attracts us to a commitment to:

It is our prayer to provide ministries to assist people in their journey as well as to encourage people to en-

counter Christ, be enlightened and encouraged in their growth and service as a disciple of Jesus, and to be

engaged in mission and ministry both within and outside the walls of the church as well as the community.

Help the leadership and ministry teams know how we may best serve you as you strive to discover the

depth and reach of your walk of faith.

• Connecting with persons to enable them to encounter and connect with Jesus Christ. Our

mission includes helping people find a living relationship with a living God. The revelation that

our faith is more than in an active religious system helps us personally make a loving and liv-

ing connection with God in a dynamic relationship but also strikes a passion in us the help

others discover God’s love, grace and power in their own lives.

• Connecting with broken and hurting people where they are, encouraging and empowering

them to discover the healing and grace of God and discern where God is leading them.

• Challenging persons to grow and celebrate their relationship with Jesus Christ by engaging

them in discipleship disciplines personally and corporately, enlightened by the Scriptures and

led by the Holy Spirit of God.

• Equipping persons and partnering with them to engage in God-powered ministry - inspired,

empowered, and engaged in ministry to whatever and where God is leading them.

Our Traditional Choir needs YOU!

We need a few more voices to sing at the Traditional Service this year. We have a few people from the contemporary service that join us and leave after we sing. That’s ok. We understand you have already been to a worship service . We schedule our Anthem about 15 minutes into the service.

Our rehearsals are on Wednesday evening at 7pm to 8:30pm in the choir room. We work hard but we laugh too! We have our Christmas Cantata already picked and will start on that later in October.

Our first rehearsal is September 11th at 7pm . We would love to see you!

We are offering a special PLACE Experience to encourage those who are interested in serving and to develop our Ministry Teams. We will be focusing on creating dynamic ministry teams. As we learn about our own gifts and callings, we will also be applying our new insights from PLACE

You can sign up for a one-day event on Saturday, Sept. 14, 8:30-3:00 OR sign up to attend a Sunday morning Series, running from Sept. 8- Oct. 6, 11:00-12:00. ing you and your team through a series of topics including: “Who Am I As a Leader?”, “From Doer to Equip-

per”, and “The Power of Story.” We would like to support our Ministry Team Leaders and Members by provid-

ing you with tools and knowledge to help you grow as a leader and to become more effective in your minis-

tries.

There will be no cost; we will accept donations to cover the meal on Saturday.

HELP in the Contemporary Worship Service

We are looking for some extra people who would like to be a part of some of the things that go on Sunday morning in our contemporary worship services.

We encourage any of you who play an instrument or enjoy singing to join us. We have rehearsals on Saturday mornings at 9AM and participate in both Sunday morning worship services at 8:30 AM and 9:45 AM. You don’t need to commit to every weekend and have the option to be a part of the team when you are able. Please see Andy Roberts (he is our piano player) if you have an interest.

Is your interest in building sets, painting scenery or setting up a visual each week? Every Wednesday (unless we need to set a different day for who is available to help) we take down the set from the previous Sunday then reset for the next week.

Do you like to prepare Power Point? Would you like to learn? How about run a camera, help with sound or lighting? We have many opportunities for anyone to help on a Sunday. You only sign up for when you are available.

If this is something you may want to explore, please see me and I will direct you to the right people to talk to. Please see Mary Smith or email her at [email protected] with any questions you may have or to sign up! Thanks!

The Annual Silent Auction, benefiting Church of the Good Shepherd, begins in ONE week! Bidding will begin

at 8:00am Sunday, September 8th and conclude at 12:00pm Sunday, September 22nd.

This year’s auction will feature handmade and craft items donated by members of Church of the Good

Shepherd. We think you will be amazed by the creativity and talent our congregation possesses! Thank you

to those who have donated items; to those who think you missed your opportunity to donate … it’s not too

late. Donations will be accepted today, as well as, Tuesday and Wednesday evening (Sept 3rd and 4th)

from 6:00pm and 8:00pm. If the above dates and times don’t work for your schedule, or if you need

assistance getting your item to church, please contact Melissa (Missy) Maillet at [email protected]

or 717-269-8049.

Thank you in advance for your generous support of the Silent Auction. As a reminder, all money

raised will directly benefit programs at Church of the Good Shepherd!

DID YOU KNOW ????? Goats were the first animal to be used by humans for milk. People all around the world eat and drink milk products from goats more than any other animal.

Goats are often shaved for their hair which can be turned into carpets, scarves, winter hats, suits, sweaters, coats, socks and home furnishing!

In some places in the world goats are used to pull carts and carry heavy loads.

Be sure to attend the LIVING GIFT MARKET on Saturday, Dec. 7th. You will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with several goats. Mark your calendars now!

We welcome all youth from 6th grade through 12th grade to join us for a fun evening of food, fellowship, music, a lesson taught by one of our volunteers and a small group experience. Small groups allow students to share their life struggles and understand that God loves them through it all.

Hope to see you Wednesday nights at 6:30 for a light dinner. Our program starts at 7:00 and ends at 9:00. We meet in Larry Berger Hall at Church of the Good Shepherd, 1500 Quentin Road, Lebanon PA 17042.

Children and Family Ministry September 2019

What will the school year 2019-2020 look like for our Church of Good Shepherd families? My prayer is that they will look back fondly at the moments that were challenging and caused growth but also at the mo-

ments that brought pure joy. Our theme this year is the “Year of Ser-vice” where we will hopefully serve our church family and community in ways that grow our faith and bring opportunities for connections. Our first service project of the year was awesome! Our “Blessing of a Back Pack” was a huge success in that 72 book bags and supplies were do-nated! 27 of those back packs went to Cornwall-Lebanon and the re-maining 46 went to Lebanon School District elementary buildings. Our Move Up day and our morning were our students and their backpacks were blessed was a huge success. 133 kids and their backpacks were in attendance!

We look forward to what the fall brings and how our faith will grow here at Church of the Good Shepherd. Praying that everyone takes time among the busy school schedules, sports schedules, music lessons to be quiet, still and spend time with God. Check out the new Parent Resource Library beside the Children and Family Ministries table. Feel free to borrow a book, just be sure to sign it out and return it when you are finished. There are some really good resources there for your families and/or yourself.

Blessings,

Abbie Burton

National Family Ministry Leader coming to COGS on September 29th!

Did you know that, despite the effort of many churches to be more creative

and welcoming in and reaching the next generation, over 85% of children

stop going to church once they graduate from high school? In addition, many

of our students grow up in the church but don't necessarily grow in their faith.

Great discipleship practice by parents is among the best solutions. If you

want your kids to walk with God in a way that makes them world-changers,

come learn about a critical strategy that might surprise you.

On September 29th, Jeffrey Reed will be sharing the message at all 3 services and then will

come back to COGS from 4-5:30pm to present his Family Flight Plan workshop. Childcare will

be provided. Sign ups are on the CFM table or use the online signup that is on the website. We are

asking that all registrations are completed by 9/22 so we can secure enough childcare and appetiz-

ers. Please share the word with others as we are opening up this wonderful opportunity to grow

with our community as well. Grab a postcard and give to a friend.

Jeffrey Reed serves as a family ministry specialist for Life Way Christian Resources, in Nashville,

TN. He works with churches across the country and speaks and leads often at parenting and family

conferences. He started in music in the 1980s and 90s and wrote music for the 1996 Olympics be-

fore being called into full-time ministry that same year. He has served as kids pastor, student pastor,

worship pastor, senior pastor, and executive pastor. He lives South of Nashville with his wife and

four children and serves as the family pastor at The Church at Spring Hill.
